I honestly used to dislike rewatching this movie when I was younger for being a dark sequel, just like Temple of Doom. But now I enjoy it just as much as the first film.
To some extent, I can understand why people were upset with this movie: It definitely pushed the bar compared to the first movie. I think this movie is fairly solid.
I loved it when I saw it and always loved the score. I don't understand why people dislike it, it's awesome. But I get that the script that wasn't used was a detective story, with roots in The Maltese Falcon. Which they called a Hardy Boys mystery and refused to make. The one from Sam Hamm. The one where Catwoman is a cat burglar like her origins.
This film might've had a complete opposite problem of Disney Star Wars with it's dark tone. Wheras Disney was being safe and refuse to innovate, Batman Returns really leaned into morbid content and it was a bit too ambitious with its ideas. That doesn't make it a bad movie, just that it went overboard in areas and toning things down a bit might've led to it getting better reception. I still prefer Batman 89, but this movie is also worth watching.
Apparently, Tim Burton hated working with Jon Peters and booted him and Peter Guber from producers to executive producers and they both left their company PolyGram Filmed Entertainment afterwards which also had a hand in producing the Batman films. Peters would later be known for Superman Returns and the unproduced Superman lives, which ironically would’ve had Burton direct too.
Is Batman Returns the only Batman film with a single villain that is not Joker? Most Batman movies it is Joker or an assorted cast of villains. Pee Wee as Pengy's dad was amazing.
@@JosephGeorgeDeka She was definitely a villain in 1992, though I understand the "Arkham City" video game generation sees her just as a flirty colleague who says "sexy" things and then wiggles her butt. The Michelle version's villainy is ambiguous, true - but Catwoman always was. What makes her a villain is that she places her own desires over that of the law. You can say that's meaningless and maybe it is. But I would say blowing up Shreck's department store, siding with Penguin to frame Batman as a criminal, and kidnapping the Ice Princess (essentially becoming an accomplice to her murder, regardless of whether she wanted it or not) were villainous in the context of Batman media up until 1992.
@@JosephGeorgeDeka Ha! When I started reading ASM he definitely was, he was as much a Spidey villain as the Vulture or the Gibbon. Little did I know he would have his own solo series, action figures, video games, dart board sets, etc. Do you consider Catwoman's actions those of a vigilante in RETURNS? Or are they those of a villain?
My personal opinion about this film is that it's a decent sequel and carries the dark atmosphere that I expect from both a Batman and a Tim Burton Film. Plus, it makes me anxious to see you review and cringe at the Schumacher. Forever was somewhat decent (with the only other saving grace of it being Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" in the credits). So was Batman & Robin if your able to turn your brain off to the glairing errors like Barbara being Alfred's niece instead Commissioner Gordon's daughter and Bane being an idiot henchman. And personally, I wished that film was one of the first pieces of Batman media to establish that Nora was suffering from Huntington's instead of making up a condition like MacGregor's. Both sound bad, but I like the realism of Nora having a real-life disease vs a fictional one.
The dark tone and brutality of modern Batman doesn't work AT ALL, fanboy. If anything it just proves how bottomlessly stupid his fanbase is that they try to excuse him always showing mercy to his enemies while eagerly looking for any excuse to drop the hammer on people who are SUPPOSED to be his allies

I always liked it. The Dark Knight should make dark movies. Although the Adam West one was actually smarter than people give it credit for.
@@JosephGeorgeDeka There's a time and a place for both.
While not as good as the first Batman film, this is a pretty solid sequel.

0:33 Comics weren't for kids in the first place. That just became the norm.
This movie was great. Saw it opening night here in Los Angeles 1992.

I don’t care what people say about this film, I still enjoy it.
Then, no one will care about your opinion. 🫡

My favorite live-action Batman film, and my favorite Tim Burton film overall.

News flash: Catwoman is a villain.
@@DocBruceBanner In the movies she is more of a love interest, a workplace romance. Did she ever do anything really bad in this one?
