      I thought that as well. It wasn't a spell to kill someone - it was a spell to revert someone to their original form. The Fairy Godmother thought that if Shrek would go back to his original form and Fiona didn't, Fiona wouldn't love him anymore. Harold selflessly jumped in front because he thought it was a killing spell, but he probably would've done it anyway even if he knew so that his daughter would get a choice.

      xTwilightWolvesx That doesn’t add up. She would have transformed like normal if she didn’t kiss him before midnight. Therefore goving her no reason not to want to be with him, or at least because he’s a Ogre. She’s a evil, terrible, homophobic woman. However she’s not stupid. I don’t think that was her reasoning behind it. I think she just wanted a chance to ruin his happily ever after. She doesn’t understand the fact he likes his ogre life style. She thinks he wants for him and Fiona a human lifestyle. All she knows is her luxurious style she can’t comprehend any but it.

    Simple answer: True love by Fairy Tale Law breaks and/or reverses acts of malicious intent. So when Harold took the hit from Fairy Godmother it was out of True Love though he absorbed part of the spell the magic couldn't completely harm him, just the part of him that was given in malice by Fairy Godmother while she on the other hand was killed because she had malice in her heart

    • @marianaflores2964
      @marianaflores2964 4 года назад +34

      By the end of the movie Harold saw that Shrek and Fiona really did love each other and decided to save Shrek as an act of true love for his daughter which could be why the spell only partially affected him. The rest of the spell then reflected back to the malicious intent origin, the fairy godmother, and destroyed her.

    I know this is a very far fetched theory but I’ve had it on my mind since I’ve been a kid.
    I believe the magic that the Fairy Godmother used in this epic confrontation was a spell that creates the target’s biggest fear or undo their happily ever after. Throughout the film, Harold’s biggest fear was turning back into a frog which the fairy godmother kept using against him throughout movie. As revealed by the film, Harold’s happily ever after was being turned into a human so either one of the two explanations from this theory are valid. The fairy godmother’s final line before disappearing is “Ogres don’t live happily ever after!” insinuating that whatever the spell was would undo Shrek’s happily ever after. When the fairy godmother disintegrates into the air, we can theorize that the fairy godmother’s biggest fear was to disappear from the land because as Isaac explained in his video, the fairy godmother always found ways to put herself first and she would eliminate people that would be a threat to her. In a sense, her existence and successful life as the fairy godmother was her happily ever after. Shrek would most likely have not disappeared like the fairy godmother if the spell would have come into contact with him but as shown in the film, Shrek’s biggest fear was to lose Fiona forever. It would be understandable as well to say that Shrek’s happily ever after was to have met and marry his soul mate Fiona. Fairy godmother’s intentions weren’t necessarily to end Shrek’s life but instead to take away what he most cared about which is what both Harold and the fairy godmother lost by the spell.
    Thanks for reading this! Leave a like if you’ve made it this far! 😄

      That reminds me of one of my favorite parts of any Discworld book by Terry Pratchett. Masquerade. The witch Granny Weatherwax stops a steel sword swinging at her with her bare hand, when everyone KNOWS that witches cannot bewitch steel. She explains that she COULD, but to do so, would go against the laws of magic that everybody knows(believes) and that would make her a Black witch and evil. But it couldn't be helped, because she just didn't have time to bleed right then. Near the end of the book, she sets out a needle, thread and bandages, looks down at her hand and says, "Ok. I reckon I have time now." And she is described as having a heavy bandage on her hand after that. Really good book in an even greater series. I recommend them to everyone.

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 4 года назад +15

      I don't think that's quite it. Think about it for a minute: she was originally directing her magic at Shrek; if her intent was to use it to take away his "happily ever after", then she would've likely opted to try to get him to drink a potion or something instead. She's manipulative, and is mostly prone to putting her magic into potions to achieve the desired effect, and will break someone mentally if she's able to do so; but before she fires her magical blast, she is clearly quite enraged with Shrek, enough so that her prejudice towards ogres would cause her to want to erase him from existence. Having said that, she was unable to break their bond with her magic, and was furious about this, enough so to want Shrek dead; she's also clearly upset that Fiona was turned into an ogre (again, she's clearly prejudiced against their kind), and I don't think she was thinking clearly, being blinded by rage. This would cause her to become unhinged enough to want to kill Shrek; so when Harold took the blast instead, why did it bounce off his armor, leaving him as a frog? The answer is actually very simple: she's a fairy, and his breastplate is made of steel, of which fairy magic is ineffective against. Although he was still affected by the blast, his breastplate shielded him enough to survive the attack, even if he was reverted back to his original form afterwards.

      @@matthewkuscienko4616 I read somewhere in the comments that what she wanted to do with Shrek was return him back to his previous state, and by that means he becoming the mere ogre he was at the very beginning of the first movie, forgetting about Fiona, Donkey, everyone and everything he’s ever achieved when he stepped outside of his swamp, effectively putting him back to where he belongs to the story, as the ogre, and not the hero who rescued the princess.
      So the spell very much would revert everything and everyone it touches into its previous state of their stories in order to undo the Happily Ever Afters, so when it hit Harold, he reverted back into a talking frog (maybe keeping his memories because the armor softened the blow) and when she got hit, she may’ve ended up vanishing as she had nothing to go back to, or she became tears and bubbles as that may’ve counted as her “previous state” before she got her happy ending (if she had one at all really)

    I think Harold wasn’t killed by the magic blast was because his armor was IRON. It’s a common weakness for fairy creatures in folklore (Maleficent, the Leprechaun movie series, etc), and could be why her spell was reflected; Iron REPELS fairy magic. My theory on this; the spell turns the recepient into what they fear most. Herald feared his true identity being shown. Fairy godmother feared losing her power/ control, she feared being erased.
    When the spell was only used in a weaker form on Pinocchio it kind of just acted as though an on and off switch to his curse.
    Or my other theory is that it shows the truest form of one's beauty; Herald is most comfortable and most like himself when he is in his original form (when he felt true love for the strongest time in his life; for the fact that he was willing to change his physical form to be with the one he loved). Where as fairy godmother had no true inner beauty. This would explain how she dissipated into nothing, and how pinnochio was shown in his most purest form as a real boy.

      @pittland44 4 года назад +3

      Also it was a mirrored surface, in many mythologies including Greek, Chinese and Celtic mirrors have certain properties, including reflecting hostile magic. A great example is when Perseus kills medusa using a mirrored shield. The Scots-Irish practice of skrying (mirror magic) is another example. So if you have silver (very potent metal) possibly amalgamated with cinnabar or coredeorite to make it plate better (mercury ore) with iron (which is classically used against seally and unseally faerie folk) then you have a powerful antimagic device. Harold may well have known that and that's why he wore actual armor to what was essentially a royal ball. He might have been expecting trouble with the fairy godmother, particularly after we learn that he didn't give Fiona the tea with the love potion. He would have known that would cause trouble, even if nothing else did, and planned accordingly.

    I always remembered Fairy Godmother saying "Ogres don't live happily ever after!" before casting her final spell. I had a feeling her spell was intended to kill Shrek because that would take away Fiona's happily ever after so it would make sense why Harold turned into a frog since being a human was his. I never understood why the backfire had killed her instead but I think it erased the possibility of her living happily ever after with her business and having her son become the new king of Far, Far Away.

    *Theory*
    The spell makes the person go out of existence BUT the spell has to peel back the layers of other spells and potions.
    It only hit Harold for like half a second and that took the human spell off of him almost instantly. But then it got reflected back, so the spell couldn’t take full effect.
    Then when the spell hits fairy godmother it takes a second to work since the spell is weaker from when it Harold and since fairy godmother doesn’t have any spells on her self.
    So if the spell did hit Shrek it would turn him into a ogre then into bubble.

    If you ask me, I think there's a fine line between spells that are being cast and potions that are taken as the magic they both possess comes from two different sources.
    For potions like the HEA Shrek had taken the power that kept the spell in play even after FGM was beaten came from the ingredients that were used to make it as they held the magical properties and NOT the caster.
    Spells on the other hand are used by individuals skilled in magic like FGM and are held in place by their casters own power.
    It's also worth noting that across multiple forms of media like games, books and movies with stories that feature magic have often stated that powerful spells that are cast on an individual can only be lifted if either the caster removes it themselves or if they are killed.
    That means that when FGM's spell was reflected back at her by Harold's armor and was killed, Harold's HEA was undone because she never gave him a potion, she did it herself and Shrek's was still in play because he used the power of a potion that was MADE by FGM and not CASTED on him BY her own power.
    But these are my opinions on this theory based on what I've seen across other forms of fantasy media that have magic.

  • @pickleafraidofjars

    I think it’s more of a “undo magic” spell. Meaning, she was trying to take whatever magic is holding someone together. I.e. how it made Pinocchio into a real boy instead of a magical wooden puppet. Taking the magic out of shrek of both human form and ogre form since both require magic thus making him nothing. Instead, it took the magic out the King which turns him back into a frog, and taking all the magic out of herself which turns her into bubbles. At least that’s my guess.

    My assumption was that it was a magical disjunction spell. I.E. a spell that breaks magic. She would have clearly understand what Shrek did to become human, and seek to ruin his happily ever after by returning him to his ogre form. However when it hit Harold, it undid the transformation spell returning him to his original frog state, and for the fairy godmother, a creature made up of magic, the disruption of magic destroyed her very form.

    My answer for this, while sappy 😅, is the only thing that has constantly been the thing stronger than magic : true love. If the fairy godmother's spell was meant to kill Shrek then maybe it did momentarily work on king Harold but what if he was brought back by doing something as selfless as taking a hit out of love for his daughter. It might not be too far out there since true Love's kiss was enough to work in the 4th film after time had just run out for Shrek.

    Silver, the whole reason even part of spell was reflected was that the breast plate the king is wearing is made of or coated in silver. In royal events any armor worn by anyone other then guards is purely ceremonial, and thus traditionally made from or coated in silver and sometimes accented in gold. Silver, as far as magic and fairy tales go, is a magical conduit and if polished to a mirror shine it is capable of absorbing and redirecting spells back at the castor. Depending on the fairy tale, the person holding or in contact with the silver is still effected by the spell, though the effect is reduced as most the spell is absorbed then reflected back. This is different from cold iron (better known as cast iron), where magic is completely absorbed and absolutely nothing happens to anyone, ore pure gold where the magic is absorbed and then can be redirected by the wielder's will. It is evident that the creators of Shrek know the traditional magical properties of metals in fair tales, otherwise there would be nothing to stop a witch from just using magic to remove the shackles in the first movie when all the fairy tale creatures are rounded up, shackles are traditionally made by cast and not forged and tempered like swords and armor.

    Here's my interpretation.
    She said "I'm going to take away your happily ever after!" and shoots her magic at Shrek.
    The king Defects is and it hits her, killing her.
    Let's take a closer look at this.
    She wanted to take away Shrek's happily ever after, which was him marrying and living with Fiona, as seen in the last movie, but the king jumps in the way, so his happily ever after (him being turned into a human) was undone. The chestplate (which probably deflected the magic due to fairies being weak to iron) sends the magic back to fairy godmother, but she hadn't reached her happily ever after. She would have reached it if charming and Fiona had married, so the spell made sure she could never get her happily ever after, it killed her

    @Wotso_Videos Hearing your theory about Fairy Godmother, I think the spell she was using was nullify all enchantments/spells and revert them back to their original form. Harold was reverted back as a frog while Fairy Godmother may have suffer a much crueler fate. With that spell, it became her undoing and revert back to almost nothing. The breastplate was a conductor/mirror as it rebound back to Fairy Godmother. But as all sentient beings exist, they have both light and dark side. Just like a coin, it's a part of each other.

    I think she isn't immune to her powers which is why she has to manipulate others around her. She cant use her magic on herself, and we see why at the end. To everyone else, it either gives them a happily ever after or takes it away - and to the fairy godmother, it just kills her.

    I never really thought about this before but it did just hit me that Harold was based off the Princess and the Frog fairy tale. I think that Fairy Godmother was the one who granted the Frog the power to turn into a prince when kissed. I think she used a spell that undoes happily ever afters as when she had launched the spell she had said "I told you that Ogres dont live happily ever after" therefore when Harold got hit. It undid his own spell but when it bounced back and hit fairy godmother. I think the spell didnt know what to do and I think thats why Fairy Godmother was so confused on what was going to happen to her. Then the spell took affect when it realized her own life was her happiness and Poofed her or Her wand grants you your deepest wish or erases it. As we do see that Pinocio(cant spell) gets hit with it and becomes a real boy and then later gets hit again and becomes a puppet again. It might be just that.
    Harold's deepest desire was to be loved and human and the wand took away his human form again.
    The wand granted Pinnocio his deepest desire to become Human and it granted that and then it took it away.
    Fairy Godmother realized that Shrek's deepest desire was to be with Fiona and she tried to take that away from him but instead. Fairy Godmother's deepest desire was herself. She never even really seemed to care about Prince Charming through the entire movie. She seemed more interested in having the Kingdom to herself once Charming became king and thus when her wand magic hit her. It took away her deepest desire. Herself. And reduced her to nothing but bubbles.
    Granted the Wand can do more but that makes the most sense

      @GanonGhidorah 4 года назад +7

      Eh, Dulock ended up doing alright. In my head-canon, after Farquad got eaten, the Kingdom was now under the management of lord "Isspant". Under Isspant's rule, he decided to increase Dulock's lucrative worth and spending power, by buying-up various properties and housing them under the Dulock brand. It began with their acquisition of "Wonder" - a publishing company known for their long history of children's visual pamphlets involving larger than life, super-powered beings, acting as Heroes or Villains. Isspant parlayed that acquisition into a profit-machine by adapting those stories into a series of stage-plays, starring well-known actors in the Heroic Titular Roles and creating a kind of "universe" in which all the stories tied into each other...Their quality dipped after a while, but the grand finale involving a Purple-Colored Ogre wanting to destroy the universe with a magic glove was well-received.
      Dulock only became stronger under Isspant's rule, when he acquired another property, "Look-This Film" a play-production studio, founded by a retiring Lord Georg Lookthis - and with it, gained control of its popular property - a series of stories which involves magical sword-wielding wizards fighting against an evil empire in outer-space. They produced a new trilogy of plays to continue the initial story where Georg left-off...that so far have not been well-received.
      As for now, Dulock is still incredibly powerful despite their various setbacks, to the point where they will be soon attempting to corner the market on the entertainment industry and create a complete monopoly. Unfortunately for them, their monopoly will become so large, that the lack of competition will cause the industry itself to collapse upon itself.

    The armor was basically a bulletproof vest hence, when hit at it doesn’t puncture but the area where it was hit is still affected in a more minimalized way.

    In old fairytale lore, the fae creatures were weak to silver to the point it burns them. Harold’s breastplate looks to be silver. It’s entirely possible that if she was trying to revert Shrek’s appearance that by the spell touching the silver, it could alter it into an anti-fairy blast.
    Also, the real question is, why isn’t Charming fairy looking or anything? He’s still technically half fairy.

    I always thought Harold’s breastplate was silver since it seemed more decorative. Since sliver has a long associated history of repelling curses and the like.

    Tbh, we know the armor reflected the spell the spell, just turned Harold into a frog b/c that could have possibly been his origin.

    Ehy Wotso, can you do a video about how Shrek never borning led to the alternate reality we see in the fourth movie?
    I mean, it'd be interesting to find an explanation as to why Puss became fat or as to why the Muffin Man now organizes gladiator fights, as well as answering questions like where did characters like the Fairy Godmother and Lord Farquaad go?
    My personal theory is that it's not just the disappearance of Shrek that led to that future, but also the fact that Rumpelstiltskin retains his memories, inclining him to hate all the ogres or to ruin Shrek's old friends' lifes somehow. But I'd like to hear your ideas in a video too.

    I'm gonna offer my opinion...I use to think when the Fairy Godmother fired the spell it was to undo the happily ever after she did say "I told you Ogres don't live Happily ever after!", it could be possible that when she fired the spell she intended for the spell to undo whatever connection Fiona had with Shrek and when Harold got in the way, the connection for his happily ever after was undone, changing him back to a frog but when the spell fired back...what was there to work with? Nothing. So she was hit with raw energy, the energy looks like lightening, maybe if the spell had no effect it's raw power fried the fairy Godmother like a marshmallow and killed her or made her body disappear. Or maybe she had her happily ever after and all she needed to maintain it was her body...eliminate that, her happy ever after goes too. Maybe if the spell hit Shrek it would have changed his feelings for Fiona but the spell was directed at both Fiona and Shrek maybe it would have removed the love the two had for each other...thus no happy ever after and Harold well we saw what happened he needed his human body for his happy ever after but by that point Lillian knew him and loved him no matter his looks(Besides it's likely Lillian by this point in her life had her happily ever after so the spell didn't hit her thus no effect to stop her loving Harold)
    I'm probably wrong...I am about most things.

    All reflective surfaces still absorb some energy in the process it's a question of who absorbed more. The mirror polish or a redirected energy bolt

    Could still be magic being undone. Harold's happily ever after wasnt a potion, but wand magic. Fairy godmother used magical ingredients to recreate that spell in potion form later

    The chest plate if i know my mid evil garments, was most likely made of iron and that's why it deflected the magic as well as took the hit from it

    I always thought that she shot something like an anti magic blast, something to disrupt the magic of the target , that would’ve turn shrek back into an ogre, that’s why turned Harold back into a frog and that’s why destroyed the fairy godmother being herself made of pure magic...right?

    well in a way its like a mirror reflecting it which caused it to backfire. Plus as its wraped around than flat or used in a curved way to reflect it back can be a reason some of the magic touched him while the rest rebounded back at her as it hit the middle of the breastplate

    Harold's armor-plate was anti magic and therefor acted as a layer of protection from the spell, but only his torso was covered so he still got some of it. Fairy-godmother had no protection at all and got a full blast of it

    Fairy Godmother also turned Doris’ wish into a curse. In earlier airings, a picture of Doris as a handsome man and then as a beautiful woman can be seen in her factory. That said we also know she will turn wishes into curses if the other party fails to pay up, as she threatened to Harold. Given Doris’ current state, the voice, the behavior, etc, it seems this was indeed the case. We also see the other Ugly Stepsister actually appears far more feminine than Doris overall.
