    People really out here blaming victims of abusive relationships in the comments. Get outta here.

      People are so uneducated on abusive relationships and the victims of it, these people are put through mental hell by their abuser. There is a reason there is a sub-category of PTSD for victims of domestic violence!!! I truly think this is a subject that should be mandatory to teach in high-school like SexED.

      @michelleprieur1 6 лет назад +25

      I'm not unsympathetic towards her, as I'm a survivor of domestic abuse, but that doesn't absolve her responsibility. Women like her who continue to go back do a disservice to others who genuinely need help to get out. I'm a nurse and can't tell you how many times I've treated battered women repeatedly. I got help and got out. Fifty years ago I would be more sympathetic, but now there are plenty of resources to help. Also, it's been established that she had a serious drug problem. Again, I'm not unsympathetic, however, anyone who lives that kind of lifestyle is putting themselves in a dangerous situation. I'm sorry for her family and especially her child.

      michelleprieur1Your experience is not everyone's. Blaming her for probably being emotionally and physically abused/tormented is not helpful. Everyone deserves to get the proper help they need, no matter what. Even if she did have a drug problem, that doesn't matter in this case at all. She was still a victim, and did not deserve to be taken from her son.

    • @michelleprieur1
      @michelleprieur1 6 лет назад +22

      Dead Inside I will blame her for getting into his car 5 minutes after a court hearing claiming that he was abusive. I don't care if it's helpful or not. She got help; she chose not to use that help. She chose to take herself away from her son by being a drug addict. He wasn't even living with her before this happened because she was strung out and hanging around criminals. Her son didn't ask to have a drug addicted idiotic doormat for a parent and I will judge anyone who chooses to put their child through that. Now he's an orphan. No.

      Love that complete 180 you just did. I have a lot to say, but I will not. I understand your point of view, but a life may have been ended and now her son no longer gets to make the choice of whether or not he wants her around and she now has no chance of living her life for the better and earning forgiveness for things she may have possibly done. This discussion is over.

    According to Courtney's mother in a 2020 interview, they have the messages exchanged between Courtney and Phillip.
    They did agree to meet because he had some things that belonged to her. According to the messages exchanged He was supposed to pick her up, take her to his home to collect the stuff, and take her back home afterwards.
    He definitely picked her up and there is CCTV footage of them at a store moments later. After that, Courtney vanished and Phillip went on to have a backyard "bonfire" with 2 of his friends. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

    I’m in St. John’s, NL. Awesome of you to cover this. Ironically I was just out reading the new missing posters for her that are around my neighbourhood. Newfoundland has so much wilderness...when people go missing it can be like a needle in a haystack. I have to add as well, our mental health resources are terrible. It’s not surprising to me at all. Shared to Facebook 💜 & Btw, there are more of these cases here that would also deserve more attention. Some very old.

      Mental health issues are not properly adressed in Quebec either. They will maybe send you the hospital if you're a "heavy" case and then park you in a hallway for days or weeks until you get out or get sent to an actual mental health institute. Pills are given, though... But most psychopaths that are into domestic abuse won't take them... At least that's from my personal experience.

    In my opinion, she was there to meet him if you pay attention to the footage she goes in the car way to quick she didn't hesitate not even for a second so that means she was expecting that a car would be pulling there to pick her up because when a car pull close to you and you weren't expecting, you first walk back and ten try to recognize the person before you get in and it is clear that she knew the driver and she was expecting that person, I don't know how he convinced her to meet him after everything he did but he did convince her somehow.

      Life after 40 Exactly. If any of us were walking and a random car pulled up beside us we would take a moment to back away and scope them out first, which Cortney did not do. It’s clear to me it was a planned meeting.

    From Newfoundland, recently moved to St. John’s. I was living across the province when she went missing and immediately had a problem with her missing person posters, the photo was so heavily filtered that if I ever saw her in passing I wouldn’t have known it which I found odd and still do. Abuse cases are not uncommon on the island, and the mental health system is known for turning away people who are actively afraid of harming themselves or others. It’s a bad system. They should have taken her ex in but I am not at all surprised he was roaming the streets.
    Lately a lot of people have gone missing in town, one man, nicknamed “Pepsi” has been missing over a month and his posters have been vandalized and ripped apart downtown which has been upsetting to see. It is really easy to go missing in the province with so many bodies of water and all the forest.

      If you’re leaving st.Johns on the run you have to go west, really. Going south puts you through small communities with no where to branch off and lower speed limits, but west has two highways with a lot of off ramps in the CBS area and eventually would get you out to the ferry to get off the island if you really wanted to run. North is a small highway with no branches and east is into the atlantic ocean.

    Somehow guys like that are almost always able to draw you back in-even after you’ve sworn them off forever, pressed charges, etc. It just takes one moment of weakness to see them and think you can talk some sense into them, or that you can “help” them. You remember all the good times you had together (he’s not ALL bad) and you miss those times, you KNOW he secretly has a good heart and that the man you love is still there underneath all his anger and hurt, if you can just get through to him the good in him will come out and maybe things will be better this time....THAT’S the thinking that led her into that dude’s car that day ,but unfortunately, I think her making that one bad decision got her killed. So sad

      Aaaand I’m just getting to the end. I’m a huge mental health advocate but I’ve also been in an abusive relationship. We need to take into consideration mental illness in these situations but don’t forget that pattern that points toward an abusive relationship. Speaking from experience “getting in willingly” to a vehicle when you truly think someone may harm you is a totally different situation.

    I'm from Newfoundland, and was actually recommended this video by a co-worker of mine after I'd mentioned I'd begun watching your videos. This case still, over two years later, imprinting a deep scar on Newfoundland. Pretty much everywhere you go now, you see her pictures, you hear the pleas from the family. It's devastating, and Philip's actions were beyond cruel, and not a single person and not a single investigator on this case has any doubt that he had something to do with it. However, I'm inclined to add some information that I didn't see you cover in this video re: Jason. I worked in the Avalon Mall the same time that Jason did. He's not the proper guy he's been airing himself to be in the news, but that aside, he did exhibit some weird behavior around the same time as Cortney's disappearance. He was reportedly let go from his job due to theft, though I can't confirm that because charges were never laid, this was just word of mouth. Also, Jason has been seen on Facebook in several different forums mouthing off about Philip and saying how he wishes he could have done more, and whatever, but in one forum, reportedly, he talked about getting a text from Philip (how he had his number is a different story) before his suicide saying that he was sorry for what he did to Cortney. Now, Jason is a serial liar and very... I guess controversial in the eyes of the community given his whack ass statements but it frustrates me to no end that the RNC haven't looked more into him. I think he knows more than he's letting on. Especially if he, as he says, had Philip's number - enough to be able to identify it as Philip's number. It's just a sketchy situation, and I feel bad for Cortney above all. I see her face every time I go on a bus to go to work, and every day I wake up hoping that they'll say they've found her. Her father bought her a tombstone just this past July, I think, and my heart bleeds for this family. Especially her son, because I can only imagine what he's being told being raised by Jason, given his comments when she first disappeared.

    I’m from Newfoundland and I live like 5 mins away from where he was found harming himself in the beginning. I’ve been watching so many true crime videos and was thinking someone should cover this case, I’m so glad you did! Don’t know how I didn’t find it before now. It’s unfortunate so many people in the comments are blaming her for getting in the truck with him, he was obviously trying anything to see her and in an abusive relationship it’s hard, it’s really not uncommon to go see or continue to have a relationship with your abuser. He could have said anything to convince her to go with him, it’s not her fault. The way he pulled off in the truck gives me bad vibes.. and so does him getting gas the next day in rubber boots.
    It’s so cool that you’ve been following this case and decided to make a video on it! I hope for her family that they find her soon❤️ it was interesting to read the other comments from people who are from here, too!

    Yeah, I feel like this is a pretty clear cut case of dude being controlling, obsessive, and unable to accept losing a woman because he thinks of her as his item to own. I'm Canadian and there's a lot of hidden misogyny in the justice system - especially out east in Nova Scotia/ Newfoundland/ New Brunswick. Just in the last year there was some controversy about police out east not taking sexual assault and rape allegations seriously enough to the point that they're re-opening hundreds of cases. I am not at all surprised that this man's controlling and obsessive behaviour was not considered serious enough to warrant concern by the justice system.

    Break ups are hard, we all handle them in different way's, not justifying his behaviour whatsoever, it clearly became a mental circle for him, (circular thinking do to loss) he could not stop obsessing over her, he did deserve help if he could no longer or ever, follow rules that the court ordered, now we have two dead people more than likely one for sure. Very sad. I am glad the child has a sable loving relationship with his father and was able to see his mother in a positive light, I can't imagine being a mother and not seeing my child, let alone my dog so I am glad she was taking steps to resume her relationship. It sounds like a bunch of confused, not stable young people, who probably didn't have good examples of stability themselves. Heartbreaking for certain.

    I know this is completely irrelevant and off topic but she was so beautiful. When Danelle showed the first picture of her my immediate thought was how drop dead gorgeous she was. Aside from that though, I think it's amazing how much effort you put into your videos and how much you genuinely care about the cases you cover and want to keep them in the public eye as much as possible. Instead of just telling the story of the case you have real, genuine care for the case and for the families of the cases you cover, and I think that's why you're my favorite true crime youtuber, because you legitimately care.

    READ FOR SOME BACKSTORY: i swear i almost screamed when i seen this video because i’m from st. john’s newfoundland and have been requesting for so many crime channels to cover this and i’m so thankful that someone finally did!!! this case is very upsetting and i have some connection to it because just a month before she went missing me and my cousin were camping with some friends and seen a truck in the middle of a trail with no one around and we called the cops after someone complained the truck was in the way of them passing with their car to get to their cabin. anyways after hours of waiting the cops said it belonged to the man suspected in this video and he was admitted in the hospital for trying to commit suicide. (before the cops came my cousin went down to investigate with two males and they seen pictures scattered around with a boy and a girl) a month later courtney was put out as missing and my cousin recognized the truck shown and the girl from the picture was courtney.

    Thank you for doing this case. I live in the area and have been following since it hit the papers. Generally, the province is pretty low-crime, so cases like this stick out. Another case to look into is Jennifer Hillier-Penney, who went missing from St Anthony Newfoundland.

    I'm from this town and the searches are still going on to this day but my fear is she never will be found because this is a EXTREMELY rural province, everywhere is totally surrounded by trees and forest and ocean. You have to keep in mind this is a island and this all took place on the edge of it, literally any direction you drive in this area one way or another brings you back to the ocean. There are multiple places that are on top of incredibly high cliffs with complete 50' plus drops directly into the ocean. It's terribly sad to think about and I hope this isn't the case but it's also extremely possible.

    Being an abuse survivor myself this hits me so close to home. And it breaks my heart knowing how the justice system deals with these things. I went in front of a judge to get a restraining order from my abuser. I faced him and the judge basically made it seem like I was lying and that what happened to me didn’t matter. She wanted to give me a 3 month restraining order and set a later date for him to come back and testify against me because she didn’t want to “ruin his life”. I had to threaten the fact that I’d either press charges against him for another investigation that was going on at the time and for him to do real jail time, or they give me the restraining order I rightfully deserve. It’s said how these things truly are never taken seriously. And it’s one of those things that you will never full understand unless you went through it yourself. I hope this beautiful young women gets the proper burial she deserves. This is just honestly heartbreaking. This could’ve been me or anyone else that has gone through an abuse story. Her family and her young son will be in my thoughts and prayers. She deserves justice as does anyone going through abuse!

    Cases like this absolutely break my heart. The idea that her family may never be able to truly put her to rest and get the closure that they deserve, I can’t imagine how difficult it is for them. It makes me want to drain all the bodies of water and tear apart all the land looking for answers, I wish there was more we could do. Cortney is so strong for testifying in court and I hope that is how she is remembered - a strong voice shining a light in the darkest of times.

    Just came across your podcast and am both binge watching, and enjoying!
    I did want to clarify something you said Danelle, our Peace Bonds in Canada are along the same line as a restraining order, more than probation.
    They can be taken out against anyone that one may be fearful of, from a family member to a neighbor, and/or you are fearful of property damage by the defendant. That is likely why Cortney's mom was trying to serve one on Philip. It differs from a Restraining Order, in that an RO is strictly against a family member, and can involve custody issues.
    Keep Up The Good Work! 👍

    My ex was the same way, but luckily I had pictures of the abuse, and they had me dial a number so they could keep a record of the calls. It took at least a year, but he finally stopped stalking me ,and showing up at my house, against the order of protection. He used to sit at the end of my block, just out of the 50 foot range in his car, and watch my house. Guys like this don't get it, they think they own you, you are property and expected to do as they say. What hurt the most was the "friends" I lost some of whom are still in my neighborhood. I lost people I'd known for years and years but thankfully it showed me who was real and who wasn't.

    The fact that he pleaded guilty even tho he didn't believe he was, and he did it to "prove" he'd abide by the restrictions enforced even tho he'd broken them previously, shows he had no respect and no fear and no insight. She never had a chance. Fooled the cops, fooled the judge and fooled her. Master manipulator.
