    Do YOU remember Hugo?
    Does your country have any little-talked about gaming mascots of its own?

      We had our own Hugo shows in Germany, call-in challenges were featured in every show, the best known host was (voice) actress Julia Haacke, I enjoyed watching this back in the 90s. 😁👍🏻

      I think I may have played a Hugo game when I was young, or at least seeing something that had to do with Hugo. He was a thing in Sweden too.
      I do also know we had that "play it on TV via phone" here in Sweden too, we also had Rummel & Rabalder as well as the Woodii games.

    As an American whose never stepped foot outside of her corner of America, I've had a strange obsession with Hugo for years (not just because I had a crush on the villain lady at one point) because the franchise just seemed so... arbitrary? Like it existed for the sake of existing, and that was really weird to me growing up.

    • @fixedfunshow
      @fixedfunshow 9 месяцев назад +2

      As someone from Argentina we love Hugo too!

  • @goranisacson2502

    As I watched this with my sister, I paused, I kid you not, RIGHT before you had your VTuber realization about Hugo and said the exact same thing. She winced in pain when I said it, but look who's the caring and considerate brother- when you did it AND showed waifu Hugo, she wasn't in NEARLY as much pain as she could have been if that attack had caught her unprepared!
    Also WOW this is a massive blast from the past. As a gaming older 30's man myself you bet I remember Hugo from his heyday here in Sweden, and even some of the games he inspired over here. Jumping across the crystals always seemed the worst path, and learning the rope-pulls really were randomized... yeah. I get it, you couldn't have the little callers win ALL the time just because they managed to make it all the way through, but dear God hitting them with a lottery after their skill at taking the delayed inputs got them all the way there... my empathy for those of my generation / older who made it in just to stumble due to events that weren't even their own fault has skyrocketed. It also makes me think how these "call-in games" might have effected or molded people's view or expectations of video games, primarily the older generations who just saw their kids play... and put into perspective that once upon a time, our government-funded tv channels really did just put funds into making video games for kids to call in and play on prime time television. I wonder what lead them to go down this road, considering these experiments disappeared as the 90's went on.
    Nostalgia aside it was also cool to learn how wide-spread Hugo was throughout the world as I didn't even know he was Danish until WAY later in life, and and finding out in the comments that Morgenthaler had a cartoon(?) going on all the way back then was a trip when I only know him from Wulfmorgenthaler from comic magazines over here. You really never know what you'll learn from youtube, these days.

    Hugo was apparently super big in Spain but he was way before my time, although I did knew about him thanks to an old RUclips series that constantly brought him up. I'm surprised to see the TV games got faithful ports so early on, as I was convinced those never happened until the era of digital download games like Xbox Live and the like
    Also I'm super excited about the prospect of you covering the rest of the Hugo games from the 2000s. A while ago I remember trying out the DS game about him and it suuucked

    Growing up in the 90z in Sweden.
    Hugo was on every morning on Channel 4. It was a kids show and kids called in. Into the studio live and played.
    It was always the same. Moron kids who didnt understand anything and the host yelling LeFT! Right right ! And when the kid hit something you heard beep beep from the telephone 😂
    The delay was mercyless! Like full 2-3 seconds 😂.
    Recently it was discovered or admitted that LAG was delibirately added so the one calling in didnt hog all the time the show had 🎉🎉

    • @FictionAddiction
      @FictionAddiction  9 месяцев назад +1

      oof. I don't believe the lag was on purpose in the original danish show, but I can imagine that primitive technnology and variations in phone models caused quite a bit of it.

    Dude...I remember playing the first Hugo ps1 game and getting childhood scars from it...those were the times. Although, looking at this video, I'd love to see/maybe hear what you think about the Hugo Bandicoot games on ps1 (Those in particular being Hugo: Quest for the Sun Stones and Hugo: Black Diamond Fever). I played BDF for hours as a kid and loved the crap out of it. Love the vid, my dude, keep us Danes proud and loud...mostly loud, but still XD.
    Also, I know this is kind of off topic, considering this is a video about our favorite danish big-nose, but...Do you by any chance happen to have plans to cover Swat Kats at some point? I remember watching that tv show basically every morning when I was a kid, and it's honestly my favorite old-school cartoon. But for the life of me, I CANNOT Find any danish clips for it, no matter how hard I look! And it's driving me up every wall in my damn apartment! I'd pay good fucking money for just one episode in danish to appear somewhere!

    Hugo was a hit in Swedish television as well and the games were fun to.
    When it comes to a Swedish gaming mascot? Steve from Minecraft isn't exactly little-talked considering his inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate broke the internet, but he is the first one I could think of when it comes to Swedish gaming mascots. Most Swedish PC games in the 90s usually used characters from children books.

    Your videos about Danish--made content are always my favorites since just about all of it was never brought here, apart from a few animated films that got crappy English dubs. Even Benny's Bathtub only just released on home video here, and that is through a specialty distributor that primarily brings over European and Russian content. Thankfully, the HD transfer looks pretty great, but the subtitles could have been better, which sucks because their other blu rays do have better subtitles.
    I wouldn't mind seeing a video about the other Hugo games, but personally, I'd be more interested in videos about Danish comics and animated films. A video about the Valhalla series would be cool.
    Being American, all of our mascots have already been talked about to death, so channels and videos like these are more interesting to me since characters like Hugo never made it over here. Can't say I'm a fan of Hugo's voice, though. It sounds exactly like the kind of lazy, annoying type of voice a bunch of 80's-to-mid 90's cartoons had. I remember characters from Star Wars Droids, the Mega Man cartoon, and even Gurgi from Disney's Black Cauldron all sounding like that, and I dislike most of them.
    Also, I'm not that disturbed about the partner swapping joke. That's pretty typical adolescent humor. I'm more disturbed by the fact that you used the Pac-Man death sound effect, implying that Hugo banged Ms. Pac-Man to death and then told her that she's really good at this. You sick bastard.
