Omg, you're killing me . I laughed so hard when you were sewing your dress, which by the way, is GORGEOUS !!! I only wish you would have shown us step by step how you repurposed it, you know, like a tutorial or something. I love thrifting clothes but all I'm good for is minor things, you are like a ninja, cutting, slashing, remaking the entire piece. You did a fabulous job.

Agree 100% about needing to see it step by step. I'm new to upcycling and so many videos rush through the actual sewing - which is the part I need to learn!

You are JUST TOO CUTE! I also sew, I loved making my daughter clothes when she was little. It was enjoyable and loved putting them on her to wear. She’s now 40! I haven’t sewn in a while, I just mend things now. But watching you cut things up, I think OMG, I’m not that brave! You put them back together and they look ADORABLE on you! I love your outlook on going to the thrift store and buying garments due to the fabric, that’s awesome! You gave me a new outlook and I just might be taking out the ole Bernina sewing machine! Lol. Keep up the Great work and videos! I’m new to your channel and excited to see more!

Some great upcycles! I have been sewing since I was 5 and in high school thrifted a bit. Then years later I thrifted a lot. Somewhere the sewing and thrifting collided. I also thrift things because I love the fabric and will go from a few fixes to complete transformation. You have some great creative ideas. Do not feel you cannot add other non thrifted things to a remake......the goal is to make something you love. The dress with the godetts is awesome!

Love your upcycles and I feel like we would be besties, even though I could prolly be your grandma😌Anyway, the reason that the skirt was so rectangular is that it was an '1980s does 1920s" dress. Thus the oversized long collar, dropped waist and straight skirt. These were not very flattering on most girls unless they were stick thin, and even then...not so much. The reason that they were worst is because they added a lot of extra gathers and ruching that that 1920s dresses didn't have and it was just and over the top mess. You did a great job making it relevant and I was nervous about the sheer inserts but they work! bravo!

Hi, thanks some good ideas there. For info. the triangular fabric inserts you used are called godets (pr. godays) they really worked on the dress it looked and moved so much better. Thanks also for talking about the things that didn't work, that is so helpful. One problem I have had when reducing the length of shorts is that so many now have a small amount of lycra/elastane in the weave so the sewing is a little tricky to keep smooth.

I love doing that too: buying pieces from the thrift or used online (like depop) and then turning them into something else. Or fixing them so they fit me better. Except I am doing it by hand. Or do far I am anyway. I have successfully done a few bigger projects but I am still a novice really + still make mistakes. But I think we all do.

And I really love the finished dress, it's so beautiful. But it did did make me laugh because I had the same kind of problems and all I was doing was a satchel bag 🤣🤣🤣 I can't tell you how many times I unpicked it and added stuff to cover my stupid mistakes. But I was so happy once it was done and it was kinda cool in the end 👍😁

And if you also showed the dress as you worked on each section. It would also be interesting to see it pinned to your mannequin as you go. Good luck to you and I have subscribed as I’m in the process of doing this to my wardrobe of many many items. You have some terrific ideas for changing clothes into usable clothes.

The weirdly long shorts are walking shorts. Some people like them, some people don't. I do. Back in the day, they were called city shorts.
I'm with you on the uneven hem lengths, tho. They still seem to be popular at least on Amazon ads. Personally, the only uneven hems I think look good are floor length with trains. But maybe that's just me.

I’m glad I found you because I need to do more upcycling. Does your serger have 4 threads? That will work great with knits. When sewing knits on my sewing machine, I use a stretch zigzag stitch then finish the seams with a 3 thread serger. Also, don’t force your fabric thru the sewing machine. Let it do the work while guiding. A walking foot is also a fantastic tool to use with knits and lighter weight fabric.
