Great tips and video. I just got mine 2 days ago and the one thing I have a problem with is remotely powering on the PS5 console from the portal while the PS5 is in rest mode. It seems to work 50% of the time. Anyone else have this issue?
It's happened to be only a handful of times. I noticed it's distance from the PS5 when inside the house. Could be if something is interfering with the signal.

I had the same issue with the pulse headsets. I plugged the dongle into a usb extension cable and taped it up high and it works flawless for me now. Worth a shot!
Awesome video! Another hack that really helped with the lag was lowering the ps5 from 120hz to 60hz since the PS Portal doesn’t go higher than 60hz. It seems that since the PS5 was pushing out too many frames, it was causing the portal to continuously play catch up, resulting in frame drops. Also, make sure that you connect your ps5 to the router with an Ethernet cable to get the fastest connection possible. That completely fixed any frame drops that I had. I’m on a fiber -1GB Up and Down. So, if you followed these steps and you’re still getting frames drops, maybe consider upping your bandwidth. Good luck!
i have not had any issues with m ine over wifi or anything at all no jerking stutterring i have a eero 6 wifi mesh system in my house--you can sync one in one room then synce one in another room upstairs and the third on where ever else in house---my portal works flawlessly
The explores is what I use. I only use this at work on downtime or on my breaks..so the explores link directly the portal. Three good enough because i just play NHL or spiderman. I save COD for my home set up
I just bought one yesterday went to friends house to play and it took a good min before it connected mind you this is a 1000 mbps setup anybody else have those issue's?
Hmm, interesting. It could be so many variables that caused that and that's frustrating. I tried the same thing at a friends house not too long ago and mine worked great. But....when I tried to use my cellphone as a hotspot, it didn't work. Which I've seen other people do.
Thanks and glad you got value from it! I needed to get this out quick to help people enjoy their device. Stay tuned for the unboxing, impressions, and gameplay video coming next :)
The HDMI signal comes from the settings on your TV and PS5 turn off the automatic HDMI TV On settings for when your console is turned on TV will stay off.
My tips for people struggling Sony recommends a connection of at least 15mb for internet speed id recommended if you can to call your internet provider and upgrade to at least 25mb and you should be alright. If that not an option try plugging your PS5 into your internet modem wired and when streaming to the portal pause any game updates that may be downloading in the background on the console. If you are a person that like Bluetooth headsets there’s a work around I discovered kinda janky but it works for now. Connect your headsets to the console mute the portals audio and boom you’ll still get the audio from the console. Your range might be an issue but it should be okay. Lastly you must be connected with 5GHZ wifi don’t use 2.4GHZ. Also with the HDMI thing you can turn off either on the TV or on the console the control for HDMI option I don’t think many know this but with HDMI devices connected to a TV or Soundbar they can turn each other on and off. So if you turn that setting off the console won’t turn on your TV or Sounbar when it boots up.
Great tips! Let's hope sony sees the feedback and can make a lot of these automatic for us and even allow other companies to make their own version of the headphones. Their's aren't very cheap.
Good to know! I'll look into it right away. I think it was because I did that in my basement where I have a projector and it made it easier than turning on both individually.
I've sitting here since the features were announced saying that your wireless headsets will still work as long as you're close enough and have a dongle. Now if you're outside obviously it's not going to work but this isn't a hack because you're simply using remote play in your house. It would be a hack if you could do it across town.
Sadly, the headset trick only works inside your house or within range of your playstation. It would be cool if Sony let other companies make wireless headsets using their own tech that would be compatible.
@@sidney1234usc Thanks! I'll give it a shot, but not sure the software on the portal will recognize it. What's nice is that even if there is a frame stutter, the audio never cuts out like the wired one does.
@@Ideal-Setup yeah definitely try it and that is nice. I'm going to try it using the PS5. There are some headphones called the soundcore VR that use a USBC dongle to connect to the PS5 that may work on the portal. You can also use them on any other devices that have Bluetooth and not have to use the USBC dongle. Just know I haven't found anything yet that I couldn't hook them up to.
@@sidney1234usc Interesting. I see a bunch of them that look the same as the soundcore VR on amazon when you search it. The prices aren't bad either. Worth a shot.
I use my steel series headset on my ps5, the dongle is connected directly to the ps5. The audio and voice chat still work. I just mute my portal. And it works like normal.
Have you tried any games like call of duty of battlefield? Any "fast twitch" games that might require high precision? Curious if they'll be well-playable on the portable. Thanks!
Great question. With some tweaking it seems to work well. Especially if you have an ethernet cord connected to your PS5. But I wouldn't bet on it professionally.
@@Ideal-Setup I do have an ethernet cable hooked up, so I'm hoping that's enough. I get my for Christmas and can't wait! Hope you're enjoying yours! Thanks for the tips in the video.
That's a good question. For minecraft, I think you can do it split screen, but you would probably see the split screen on the portal too. Maybe companies will push out updates to allow that better in the future.
So curious, when we turn on the ps5 portal, it automatically turns on the ps5.. Question does it force the ps5 in to rest mode? Or will the ps5 be normally turned on just without the tv going to the ps5 screen instead of the tv programs if someone else is using the tv? Im personally not a fan of rest mode, and i have it disabled for my console
I believe you can change that in the console settings. They might even be turned on automatically, I had to turn some options off. As for rest mode, that is the only way it works. When you shut the portal off, it gives you the option to put it back in rest mode. I personally always used rest mode as it saves me time.
Curious if you put the dongle into a USB-C adapter into the Portal? I tend to play the on the PS Portal AWAY from my PS5 and the signal gets pretty bad if I keep the dongle on the console.
Also when they released new headsets how they will work? Because if the device doesn’t have bluetooth that means you need to connect with 3.5mm cable or same as Pulse headphones usb connection
Just use a 3.5 mm jack bluetooth transmitter small variant. fix it to the back with detachable tape and connect the device with your prefered bluetooth headphones. Now you have wireless sound on the go.😌 you're welcome
Thanks for sharing that tip! I was getting the sound cutting out on it every now and them, but probably due to some stuttering and not the receiver is my guess. Then you also gotta charge the receiver on it's own too, right?
Great question! I had mine off and it works fine for me. HDMI on the console is currently unplugged too for now. Although in the comments, people are saying you can just disable it in the settings too.
turn off haptic feed back and vibration to save more battery life too. They also need to relocate the charging port. hate where it is now. unfortunately u cant go to far from the ps5 to use the wireless headset. the point is so you can play anywhere in your home. I get 20 feet from my ps5, headset drops off do to loss signal strength
Good call! I'm also not happy where the charging port is. That ledge of the white backing makes it hard to plug in. Mine is working fine from the basement at a further distance, but could also be because the basement ceiling isn't as thick?
My portal has been running flawlessly for a week now. 8hr battery life or more. No noticeable latency or lag online. You wouldn't even know its a remote play device if i handed it to you, if you never knew anything about the portal. Its as close to a handheld PS5 as we're probably going to get.
That's awesome man! Glad it's running smooth for you. Seems like it's been different for everyone. I'm still running tests on mine and been enjoying playing Yakuza 0 on it.
what's your internet speed? I've got 75 Mbps and streaming into pc with chiaki isn't flawless. That's why i'm still contemplating on getting this thing.
Good question. Seems like only ps5 game streaming works for now. I personally don't stream my gameplay so haven't tested it out yet. Maybe someone else has that answer?
I have the skull and co audio stick dongle. I was looking for this kind of hack and thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can try it out as well when this portal launches in my country. Stream audio from ps5 like what I am doing now with my AirPods and then play remote play on the portal. Hopefully it’s doable.
I tried it, the only way it worked was via plugin it into the PS5 and staying within the distance. Plugging it into the portal doesn’t give it enough power.
I actually like them a lot. I got them recently as well because another headset I had died after a year. If you go into the ps5 settings and tweak them, they are great. Especially shooter mode for games like call of duty. My only gripe with them is they hurt after extended use. But that is based on head shape and ears more. So case by case.
Quick question. I will use my ps5 headset also like yours but does it getting signals from original ps5 or from the portal? Because usb will stay on my ps5 and if a go to another room usually I am loosing my headset connection. İf I will get the signals from portal that means there is no problem but if I am getting the signal from the device who has the usb there is no meaning to use a headset, I need to stay pretty close to my ps5 then.
Good question. Sadly just from the PS5, but some people have had luck using a bluetooth adapter on the portal and syncing their headphones to that. Even airpods.
i also use a Bluetooth audio Adapter and it works fine no issues. will say the sound quality is not awesome but im hoping the pulse exlplore buds are much better.
yeah that headphone thing works great if you're in your house, but you can still use those pulse 3d headsets by using the aux cord and running them wired to your portal. I know that defeats the purpose of being wireless, but at least you'll have some decent headphones to use

I don't understand what problem this device solves. Why would you use it inside your house, just play on the TV. Also, you can't take it out in public on a cellular hotspot, the service is spotty at best from what I've seen.
Good question. For a lot of busy people, it's just having the extra convenience of being able to play anywhere in your house and for short spurts of gaming, which is common for busy people. It works on other wifi's too though, so that;s nice. But yeah, very niche product that did sell out.

Haha, thanks! I agree that there are lots of ways to trouble shoot something like this, but that doesn't mean Sony couldn't have foreseen a lot of this before launch. Part of what makes a product successful is the ease of use and simplicity. Most people don't mess with their settings like this regularly. Plus, it could still use some updates to help make it run smoother without needing to do a lot of these hacks yourself.
Rather than unplugging the HDMI cable from your PS5 try disabling HDMI-CEC so that the PS5 stops sending HDMI control signals to your TV. At least for mine that keeps it from turning on my LG C2 TV.
@@Ideal-Setup Note I didn't do a before and after comparison to ensure the performance is the same either way. This product seems really cool. But it still seems like it's a useless product I don't know why Sony won't put out a true portable. I just don't feel like why this thing even exists when there's other things out there that can do portable gaming.
I know that's how a lot of people are feeling about it. It's tough, because they did sell out so it does have a market. I know I will probably use it a ton for various reasons. By the time you can get current gen graphics on something so small...they won't be current gen anymore. So I see Sony's train of thought. Even though I think it would do well. Remote play exists on other devices but I don't use them as much because I get notifications, controls, etc. I prefer the switch, this is close to that. Hope they can work out the kinks through patch updates.
What is the purpose of Portal? Maybe to let your kids watch cartoons or wives to watch her novelas? Why not come up with the idea of creating a mobile gaming console like the old PSP. I haven't seen the specs, but if it is using WiFi and sync from your main PS5 console, you won't be able to travel and play with it 🤔 in my humble opinion... thanks, but no thanks.
It's a very niche device for sure, but it does what it says it does. It's not for everyone and even still, it needs to have some updates made to make it a better product. Only time will tell. As for making a new portable actual console, I doubt they will make one soon. It's not a good financial decision at the moment. Maybe during the next console cycle they will come up with a way to do it.

Good luck!
Thanks! These are great tips you're sharing. Hopefully we get more patches soon to help reduce it entirely and it runs smoother.
i have not had any issues with m ine over wifi or anything at all no jerking stutterring
i have a eero 6 wifi mesh system in my house--you can sync one in one room then synce one in another room upstairs and the third on where ever else in house---my portal works flawlessly
Awesome and good to know! I'll have to look into that mesh system. Been hearing good things about it.
The explores is what I use. I only use this at work on downtime or on my breaks..so the explores link directly the portal. Three good enough because i just play NHL or spiderman. I save COD for my home set up
Nice! I'm thinking about getting the new pulse elite to compare it to the normal pulse.
That HDMI bug is wild and never encountered it.
I'm hoping sony does a few updates soon to make the experience smoother.

I’m glad my PlayStation 5 was directly connected from the beginning so I never had any problems with the portal
Nice! Enjoy it.
Their's aren't very cheap.
your ps5 is turning on your AV because of a setting that is turned on on the ps5. i forgot what its called (CEC?)
@@Ideal-Setup yeah but maybe try USB c to USB A adapter and plug the dongle straight into the PlayStation portal and see if that works

How far you can use the pulse 3d headset from ps5?
They work up to around 30 ft from the PS5. But depends on a lot of factors in your home.
Have you tried any games like call of duty of battlefield? Any "fast twitch" games that might require high precision? Curious if they'll be well-playable on the portable. Thanks!

Question, if I’m playing Minecraft on the PlayStation Portal, can my kids be on the PlayStation Consol on the TV and we all play together?
That's a good question. For minecraft, I think you can do it split screen, but you would probably see the split screen on the portal too.
Maybe companies will push out updates to allow that better in the future.
Can you use the wireless pulse headset while the PS5 is in rest mode?
It will work once the console is out of rest mode, which it will do anyways when you power on the portal and it connects.
Hey, I tried this and it did not work for me sadly.

turn off haptic feed back and vibration to save more battery life too. They also need to relocate the charging port. hate where it is now. unfortunately u cant go to far from the ps5 to use the wireless headset. the point is so you can play anywhere in your home. I actually like them a lot. I got them recently as well because another headset I had died after a year. If you go into the ps5 settings and tweak them, they are great. Especially shooter mode for games like call of duty.
