Thank you for explaining the WiFi frequency 20/40/80, I had it on that and had interference occasionally but since I downed it to 20/40 it’s been silky smooth with no dips! Much appreciated dude!!!
I bought a portal a few months back and had a ton of issues with lag and lost connections. I found your video and took the steps you outlined - honestly, the process pointed out just how bad my ISP-issued router was. It meant a (modest) upgrade, but my portal has had zero issues since. Moreover, my other devices are also much more reliably connected. Thanks for an amazing video! It really is the only one I needed to watch to fix my network issue.
That's great! Thanks for letting me know it worked for you. ISP routers are so hit and miss, I've seen some really good ones and some that were abysmal. So happy you're up and running though now, it makes such a huge difference to the enjoyment of the Portal when it's smooth sailing 😎
You fixed it for me mate!! Followed your advice. Got the serviced apartment to set up an ethernet hard line for me and activate my PSs mac address. I have had 0 interruptions in the last 24 hrs. Cant thank you enough. So glad i clicked on your video link. Keep up the good work!!
My ps5 has already connected via ethernet and the router is a decent one e.g tp-link ax73 with 5 GHz enable. Every download/upload speed test I've tried for the past couple of years showed me the results were optitmal with low latency. However, my ps portal streaming often stuttered even in close proximity with the router. After watching this (and another clip), I tested out wifi analyzer app and see the overlapping network freq with other houses, then fixed wifi channels (DFS as it's not occupied). It does the trick! No stuttering anymore. Thanks for showing the most comprehensive guide I've ever seen in while, subscribed :)
I’ve watched a few videos on how to help my portal. I have to say, YOU did an amazing job, I’m very terrible with technology, I’m far behind. You did a great job explaining things even to somebody like me, thank you!
BIG HELP. glad this issue brought me to your channel. based on how thorough, clear and succinct this video is (and I'm not wishing for a wellspring of other issues here..) its nice to have stumbled upon reliable assistance to come back in future. much appreciated :)
This was EXACTLY the guide I was looking for, im looking forward to watching the port forwarding video too, I have been wondering about all these things and youve demystified and covered it all! thanks a lot =)
This is a real pro Videos. Im a noob with wifi settings. I will use this video when ive finally got my portal. If its lagging then i will take ur tips. Thanks for this video dude
I was about to sell my playstation portal because I thought my internet connection was not capable of providing a decent gaming experience even when playing from home. It turns out that my 2.4 and 5 GHz network both had the same name and the Playstation 5 and the portal were both only connecting to the 2.4 option. I changed the name as suggested and connected only both devices to it. I just finished a 2 hour gaming session and didn't feel any stutter or lag! It's amazing!!!! These kind of instructions should come in the box or something. Anyways, I'm keeping my portal and I'm now subscribed to this channel. Thank you sooo much!!!
I absolutely 100% agree with you on that! Sony have done quite a poor job at supporting people with the Portal. But I'm so glad you stuck with it and got it to work :) happy gaming!
Great video! I actually had another problem for which I was banging my head against the wall for ages. By chance I logged onto my router and saw the LAN port was switching between 100Mbit/s and 1GBit/s, when it was on the lower speed it was unplayable. I checked all the cables and sure enough there was a damaged CAT5e cable in the chain which was reducing the speed. So make sure your cables are all at least CAT5e and are actually working! It only takes one broken wire of the 8 to fall back to 100Mbit/s. I know this speed should be more than enough but I think it was the instability more than the speed that caused the issue.
Thanks for the tip! It's a good place to start actually, ensuring that you cabling is solid, glad you managed to figure that out, must have been a head banger for sure!
My man I appreciate what you did on this video I followed every step couldn't connect at all no matter what I did I restarted my router PlayStation and the portal went in went from static IP to just automatic let it do its thing it connected every time I guess it's just my system
Unfortunately, all of the apps available on iOS are slightly hamstrung due to the restrictions that Apple puts in place. Do you have a specific error message on AirPort?
So.. my PS5 is connected via ethernet, my wifi is 5GHz, it's between -50dbm and -60dbm, and my download speed is above 250mbps, but remote play can't even run at 360p without stuttering and disconnecting. I don't understand what's going wrong
Did you manage to install the WiFiMan app on a mobile device? If so, have that running alongside your Portal (both being connected to the same 5GHz network) and run the latency graph. That needs to be as flat as possible with as low MS response time as possible). Check this quick Reddit comparison of WiFi performing well for the Portal and one not working well: www.reddit.com/r/PlaystationPortal/comments/1f9v6c3/the_importance_of_wifi_stability/
I congratulate you for your fantastic videos. I followed them from A to Z but without any result. I'm 100% sure everything is set up correctly, but it still sucks. remote play it’s crap. It's shameful and insulting to consumers that Sony has nothing else to offer for portable gaming.
@@TheGameFatherUK I got some info about CGNAT online.. it seams it’s about ISP blocking/interfere with port forwarding. I GOT ISSUES with the Portal on my own network!! Do i need port forwarding set up for playing at home by 2 meters from router?!?
CGNAT is a way for internet service providers to share IP addresses between customers. If you're only playing at home though (and not away from home) then it really doesn't matter. Port forwarding will not be of any benefit when playing in your own home. If you're still having issues, you really need to try a different router at home in order to rule that out. The vast vast majority of issues that people experience with lag are caused by a poorly performing network, and that can sometimes just be because the router isn't very good.
@@TheGameFatherUK My router is a ZTE H388XF (AGZHF_1.2.0) Can you tell me something about it? Online it sells for around €150! It's a latest generation router, I really don't know what better to buy
Great video! Btw, do we have a reference of what's the top performance Portal can get? I'm having a good performance with my eero mesh network, but still seeing color banding, eventual stuttering, and slight image compression. Nothing game breaking, but would be nice to know if I can extract more quality improving my network.
I don't think there is much in the way of top performance referencing, just opinions and anecdotes really due to the lack of benchmarking tools on the Portal. There are quite a large number of reports of frame drops and stuttering on the Portal even with the best network configs and conditions. Sony have released a couple of updates over the last few weeks but the problem still persists for those users.
On top of that people have to remember that when the steam deck first came out it had some issues with streaming as part of the reason why they their steam games are some are verified and some are not.. The portal might be dealing with similar issues. It took a rap three or four months for the steam deck to be fixed
The Portal does prefer 5GHz over 2.4, in my experience it will nearly always connect to that over 2.4GHz. If your router has a feature called Band Steering then you can enable that which should force the Portal onto the 5GHz network.
Great channel, any advice for the Sky Fiber new style router? Unfortunately if I change modem router then that breaches sky's terms. Loging in to the hub is extremely confusing.
We had Sky for a short while and it wasn't my favourite experience, they lock everything down so much! I'm pretty certain that the login credentials for Sky are on a little sticker on the router. Once you're logged in, check for the wireless settings section to check for wireless channel and such. They have a support article on how to do that here: helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband-Talk/How-to-change-your-Sky-wireless-channel/ba-p/2687733
It really depends on what the router is that the ISP provided. Some ISP's provide very cheap routers with very few features on that might help with network stability and priority. A 'gaming' router is just a feature rich router really. Lot of ISP provided routers are usually just fine, but there are so many other factors, like environment, that make a blanket statement like "gaming routers are better because..." a bit useless.
Thanks so much for this great guide. I was however hoping you might answer a quick question which everybody seems to ignore on their guides. So, if my kid is watching pepper pig on youtube, my wife is watching netflix, my older son is on his ps5, my other son is on his xbox s...and this is a factor I cannot regulate, in other words, this is the constant state of my network....will a PS Portal ever be an option in my house?
Thanks! I wish I could give you a solid answer but it really depends on the quality of the network equipment and the networks it creates (which can vary depending on environmental factors like construction materials, neighbours, appliances etc). Your best bet would be to use the free remote play app on a mobile/tablet device at those busy times to see how well it works for you. The performance of a Portal will be very close to that.
@@TheGameFatherUK Thanks for responding. I did download ps remote app on my android as you suggested. The result was Awful, stuttering sound, delay, frame and graphic drops. I the decided to use the same ps remote app on my Asus Rog Ally, damn...it was a fantastic experience, only down side is I need to use my PS5 controller attached with cable. However I deem it to risky to purchase the Portal based in the first experience
It 'might' help, especially if your current router is pretty old or one of the cheap and nasty ones that some internet service providers like to give out. However, if your problems are environmental (like WiFi congestion from neighbouring WiFi routers/devices) then you'd likely still need to adjust your WiFi channels etc.
Immediately after connecting to the PS portal, the wifi disconnects and doesn't recover until I restart the router. When I get the internet from my phone, I don't have this problem. The modem has 5GHz connection open and I connect the portal to it, and the PS5 is connected to the router via cable. Do you have any experience or solution for this issue? Thank you in advance
That's an odd problem. So, just so I'm clear, when you connect the Portal to your WiFi, it disconnects and won't reconnect until you restart the router? But your phone remains connected without issue even whilst the Portal won't reconnect? First thing to check would be which channel the WiFi is using, possibly try a different one. Also, does the Portal have the same issue connecting to other WiFi networks? Will it connect to any or is it just an issue with the one you're using at home?
I’m having this very weird issue. So I’m living in a student apartment where I connected my ps5 to my personal router with a LAN. So the apartment complex has a guest network and another for residents. For some reason when my portal is on the resident network it fails to connect, but when it’s on guest network it works. My gf lives in the same complex so when I’m over at her place I just carry my portal with me that is why I’m not connected to my personal router
There are quite a lot of variables there, we'd need to look a bit closer at how the guest and resident WiFi is configured. Easiest thing to check first is what the IP address of each are (on each WiFi). It might be that the addresses the Guest network are disturbing are on the same subnet as the one your console is on (is your router at home distributing IP addresses?) .
I can't even get my Portal to connect to my PS5 in my house when it's in rest mode or even when it's on and right next to it. I have a LAN cable plugged into it but it worked perfectly fine at my buddies house the other day.
Interesting problem. Can you check that both the portal and the PS5 have are on the same subnet? What I mean by that is, let's say your PS5 has an IP address of 192.168.1.10, your portal would also need to have an IP that starts with 192.168.1. The last number will be different, but the first 3 sets of numbers need to be the same.
I ordered mine and waiting. Any particular reason why u didn't mention the port forwarding u showed in another video. Is it still necessary. Does it improve experience?
Hope it comes soon! And yes, port forwarding is only applicable when you're connecting to your PS5 from outside your network (aka, away from home). This video is just about home WiFi where port forwarding is irrelevant :)
-40dBm, 20/40/80MHz, ping - 4ms, around 400mbps download and upload speeds, PS5 cable connected to the router (ASUS RT-AX58U), Portal connected via 5G Wifi, using alone channel 40 AND STILL there is LAG, minor but enough to ruin my FC24 and Gran Turismo 7 gameplay, because minor lag on these games = you cant play.... Ive done everything I mean everything and no success ... Also - beamforming enabled... aaand cat 8.1 high class cable and port forwarding - done (but this is in case im not in home) Oh one more thing - disconnected the HDMI cable from the PS5 (a lot of people say that this is a fix for them), set the PS5 to 1080p, VRR off, 120Hz off, BUT for me nothing helps and there is still this annoying little lag Funny thing is when i connect back the HDMI cable and connect the portal when a press some button there is ZERO lag when im looking to my TV (same like im using normal controller), but when i look on the portal screen there is this little lag....
It’s the av encode and decode time. Has to do with the cpus not your internet. When remote / streamed gaming gets big companies will invest more to improve the speeds but rn it’s too niche to justify but we’re getting there
Could it be that you're experiencing the widely reported stuttering on the Portal? Because those network conditions and stats are great. There are a few good videos on the PS Portal sub-Reddit that demonstrate the problem quite well, believed to be the portal switching refresh rates and changing bit rates. If so, there isn't anything you can do other than wait for Sony to fix it. They have released 2 updates since launch, but users that report suffering from that stutter haves stated that it hasn't helped still.
@@TheGameFatherUKFor the past few days I’ve read everything on Reddit and tested it… I’m waiting for an update from Sony to fix this nonsense, because after so many testing and trying I don’t think that the problem is in me.
Yeah I'd be inclined to agree with you there, you've literally done everything anyone could reasonably expect. I'd be very interested to know what they come back with if you don't mind?
@@TheGameFatherUK Will keep you updated if an upcoming update will fix this. Anyway - great video by the way and I'm too game dad (thats why I bought the portal - when my daughter is on the TV i can still play PS5 games, but.... not for now sadly....
Hey there, is that the exact error message you're getting? "Additional validation required?" If so, is that on the Portal itself? I've never seen that before.
Good video thanks. My portal is disconnecting from the PS5 on average every 30 mins. PS5 is hardwired and set to 5ghz, the portal is also on 5ghz. I play about 8 feet from the router. Any advice?
@@TheGameFatherUK thanks. No other devices drop only the portal. It works well until then. Ive tried switching the 5hgz channel and my ps5 is connected to WLAN
Apologies, your reply got lost in the list of comments I'm trying to keep up with. Have you been able to test the Portal on any other WiFi networks? Just to see if it remains connected or not? It would help to narrow down where the root of the problem is. If it's happening on other networks, it'd strongly point to an issue with the Portal. In which case I'd factory reset it and try again. But after that, if the problem remains, you may need to contact Sony 😫
@@TheGameFatherUK thanks so much for the reply, i havent tried anywhere else but that's a great idea, ill try and get over to a family members soon and see what happens.
I sometimes check on the Best Buy app once in a while and a few days ago I saw “add in cart” instead of “sold out/unavailable” I managed to get one and it arrived this past Friday xD
PS Portal is still a messed up job. I love it when it works but...I am using mesh (wifi router setting) wifi from TP-LINK and everything else is buttery smooth since I acquired these. PS Portal sometimes works without a hitch, on either 2.4 or 5Ghz (with no interference and priority channels and usage from PS5 to Portal) and sometimes its unplayable. Its definitely on SONY's part. Wifi6 on the portal would have gone a long way...but they went cheap...
WiFi 6 would have been better for sure, just for the multiple stream capabilities it offers over 5. However, the Portal does work just fine on WiFi 5 as it needs so little in terms of throughput, it only really needs stability. Unfortunately, stability isn't a simple thing to achieve since there are so many variables at play. It's not on Sony to fix that, it just isn't. They need to sort the refresh rate sync and i think it'd be an improvement to have a browser for public WiFi, but networking is networking. It's extremely rare for my Portal to drop in quality and when it does, there's usually a good explanation and I use a MESH system too.
Any particular reason why the resolution quality would be so much better on my Asus Rog Ally running Chiaki4Deck than my portal? My portal doesn’t have any disconnection problems but the image quality is more blurry and less clear than on Chiaki.
The portal does drop the quality when it thinks the network isn't up to scratch but other than that I couldn't really say with any degree of confidence. I've seen quite a few people though that generally prefer the quality on the likes of the steam deck and the Rog because of the difference in screen quality and refresh rate.
Hye.. i have problem my PS Portal can connect 5ghz wifi.. but for hotspot only 2.4ghz.. if i set 5ghz hotspot.. the portal wont connect it.. can you help me?
Are you able to try it with a different hotspot just to test against? If it was an issue with 5Ghz on the Portal, I'd expect it to be problematic on all 5Ghz networks. You need to rule out it being an issue specifically with the hotspot you're using.
So i am hoping to find an answer. My PlayStation portal is not recording any of my gameplay but as soon as i switch to my dualSense controller everything is fine.
Ok, so I initially had a problem where the record video button was greyed out, I couldn't press it. It didn't matter what the game was, all the settings looked fine too. I shut the PS5 down (not rest mode, fully off) and then started it back up again and now it will let me record video just fine on the Portal. Give that a try :)
Hello, my place doesn't support direct wired connection to the PS5. Can I use a mesh node to extend the WiFi coverage, then connect it to the PS5 using the LAN port? Would this enhance performance compared to just connecting the PS5 to WiFi? Or I just use the powerline internet instead 🤣 I greatly appreciate your guidance!
Hey there. I suppose it really depends how different the signal might be from where the node is to where the PS5 is. If it's in the same area of the room, I can't imagine it would make that much difference really since it'll just be the same signal strength going through an ethernet cable. Would any of the LAN over power plugs be an option? Some of the newer generation ones are pretty decent. Could one go next to the router and one next to the console? (make sure they are in the wall and not an extension)
@@TheGameFatherUK My PS5 and the main mesh node (which is also the main router) are in the same room. I plan to place the second node next to the PS5 and connect it to the PS5 with a LAN cable. Will this improve the connection compared to just connecting the PS5 to Wi-Fi? (I use mesh Wi-Fi 6)
Hi, after following your video on the port forwarding everything worked well for 2 weeks till recently, my PS Portal only turns on my PS5 remotely. I can see the light turning blue then white through my IP cam, but the portal throws an error "Can't connect to your PS5." Everything works well when I'm at home. Please I need your expertise.
That is really odd. Has anything at all changed on your network? Does the PS5 definitely still have the same static IP address you set for the port forwarding to work?
@@TheGameFatherUK I believe I may have identified the issue. My PS5 console was receiving NAT type 3 because my ISP assigned me a private IP address. According to my research, port forwarding doesn't function properly with private IPs. Consequently, I've reached out to my ISP to request a public static IP address. I'm hopeful that this will resolve my problem.
I assume it's CGNAT that your ISP is referring to? If so, that's still a bit odd simply because the command to wake the console up is still reaching it. My ISP also uses CGNAT, it costs me a few extra ££ per month for a public IP, well worth it in my opinion :)
My Router is too far away from PS5, it's another floor. I bought those wifi-mesh access points which have gigabit ports. Can I put a switch between ap and PS5?
There are so many variables it'd be difficult to say with any degree of certainty. Hardwire into the router will help for sure. The rest all are all environmental factors like what are the walls constructed with? How many other wireless devices are connected? How many wireless networks are close to yours? Hardwiring is a good first step. Try that first, if there is still lag, move onto the next steps :)
@@MikkelsenR Definitely worth checking that with your service provider. A lot of connections use that technology now (mine at home does too). If yours is, you should be able to request a static public IP address. My ISP charges something like £3 a month or something for it. It's almost impossible to get remote play to work on a CGNAT connection due to the nature of CGNAT.
Which kind of distance are you referring to? Distance from console to router via cable? Or distance from router to Portal via WiFi? Assuming the 2nd, it 'might' matter but it's very much dependant on your environment. For example, there's a room in my house where WiFi signal goes to die, but it's not far at all from the router. So distance can certainly be a factor, but it's one of many, which is why troubleshooting WiFi can be difficult.
Hi there.. nice video btw.. i just want to ask.. recently im having problem where my portal cant scan my 5ghz wifi and can only connect to 2.4ghz.. while the other gadget in the house were able to connect on my 5ghz wifi.. is there any setting that i have to look for? And fyi im able to connect my portal to 5ghz before but starting from today the portal suddenly can scan/connect to 2.4ghz instead of 5ghz.. the portal cant even scan for 5ghz wifi.. hope you can help me.. thanks!
Interesting problem! Is your portal able to see any 5 Ghz networks at all? Could you test it at another location where there is working 5 Ghz? If it won't see any 5 Ghz anywhere, it might need a support ticket sending into Sony for a potential wireless adapter issue. Testing it in multiple locations will help to rule out any strange compatibility issues with your router specifically.
@@muhaiminbakri7050changed what channel lower? I’m having a problem connecting to my mobile hotspot. Before the update it connected with no problem, now it won’t connect at all

160 Mhz will allow for faster network speed, but it also risks increasing the amount of interference. I'd start with 80 Mhz and see how you get on, drop it down to 40 Mhz if you're having issues with latency. If you live in a city or area with a lot of other wireless networks/devices, it might be worth starting on 40 Mhz. You want to prioritise stability over throughput/speed since the Portal doesn't really need lightning fast speeds.
@@TheGameFatherUK thanks alot dude. No im Living in a quiet area. Not so busy. I will try it without changing anything... maybe im a lucky one and have a good quality. My Main point will be if im in the bedroom. If its run good there then it would be perfect
Hi! You can't change the WiFi settings in the app, that will just show you where to 'aim'. You'll need to log into the router itself and change the settings in there.
I wonder how much data will playstation portal consume when i use home wifi if my home wifi has a cap. I read in reddit, people said that if i play on home wifi it will consume zero to little data since it s on local network, but if its on local network why it depends on internet speed?
Ok, when you say your home WiFi has a cap, I assume you mean a cap on the amount of data that is used on the internet, not your internal home network? The Portal only requires an initial 'handshake' using your Internet connection if you're playing on your home WiFi, after that it doesn't require any internet traffic at all. You can prove this by connecting the portal to your PS5 via your home WiFI, then unplugging your router from the modem/wall which will disconnect your connection to the Internet, but will still allow your home's internal network to function. You'll see that your Portal will carry on working just fine, even though the Internet is disconnected. Your internet speed is absolutely irrelevant when it comes to playing at home, on your WiFi. It just needs that initial connection/handshake when it first turns on :)
@@TheGameFatherUK oh i think i get it, so what sony means by minimum 5 mbps internet speed is what required if i play my portal outside the internal home network, is it correct? And for example, my ps 5 is connected to my main router, and my portal is connected to the network from my wifi extender that has different ssid from my main router, is it still in one internal home network?
@@chron23 Yes, the speed requirements that Sony mention are if you're connecting from outside your network via the internet. The SSID of the WiFi doesn't really matter, what matters is if they are on the same Subnet, so for example, if both PS5 and Portal have the same 192.168.1.X IP address then that's all that matters :)
@@TheGameFatherUK ok i get it, thanks👍, do you have recommendation if i want to maintain a good network in my house, is it good enough with wifi extender or should i upgrade to mesh wifi system which is more expensive? I have a small 2 floor house, i play my portal smoothly in my bedroom upstair near my ps5 and the router, but when i go downstair it begin to lag
Apologies, I just realised I missed your reply. Mesh is probably better than extenders BUT whatever you go with, they really should be hardwired in. Otherwise you're just 'boosting' a poor signal. I know it's a pain, but it really is worth it.
Hi there my ps portal turns my ps5 on from rest mode but it doesn’t actually get a connection like it shows that something went wrong and the only way it does work is from hotspot so I would appreciate if you could tell me how to make it work on my home wifi
Hey there, am I understanding this scenario correctly: you CAN play on the Portal when connected via a hotspot (so, over the internet), but not when you're playing at home on the WiFi?
@@TheGameFatherUK hotspot is cellular right and yes it works from hotspot but not on wifi but it’s connected to wifi and the PlayStation turns on from the portal
Ok, interesting. First thing to check is that both the Portal and the PS5 are on the same subnet or VLAN. So, can you just check to see what both of the device's IP addresses are? Both of them should have the same first 3 blocks of IP addresses, for example your PS5 might have an address of 192.168.1.5 and your Portal may have an address of 192.168.1.10. If one of them is different though, for example the Portal has 192.168.2.10 and not .1.10 then that's where your problem is. Let me know :)
@@oiler9350 On your PS5, go to Settings, then Network, then select "View Connection Status". You're looking for the IPv4 address. Then on the Portal, go to Settings, then System, then Device Information. Again, you're looking for the IPv4 address.
The LAN over Power ones I use at home are the TP-Link ones. Mine are getting on a bit these days, but the newer ones, the TL-PA717 starter kit are meant to be pretty great too (thats the wired only version, there is a WiFi and a WiFi+LAN version too iirc).
The Portal doesn't support WiFi 6, it'll still be connecting to either 2.4 or more likely 5Ghz. You'll likely need to select a less congested WiFi channel.
Distance and what's between the Portal to the router matters (especially if there are multiple walls in-between or multiple interference devices like microwaves and baby monitors). The quality of the router matters and so too does how much congestion there is in the local area too.
If the extender is hardwired into the router then it probably would help, especially if it was close to where you play the Portal in the same room. If it's an extender that just boosts the wireless like a wireless repeater, I've never found them to be much use at all.
@@TheGameFatherUK so how would you reduce ping? And is there any way to increase upload speed on your ps5? I got 1gig internet with 200mbps upload, but ps5 only shows 20 upload. It is plugged into Ethernet
Don't worry about the upload speed tests that the PS5 does, they heavily cap the upload test because it's really not important. wifiman.com or speedtest.net are both good tests for internet connectivity speeds. Does your router allow you to see what kind of ping you're getting between your Portal/remote play device and your router?
Stupid, you cant just use your home Wifi to use it, i thought about buying a good router wich would be only for PS5 - PS portal connection... but sadly, those ****** made it, you NEED a internet connection otherwise it wont work.. so i did not buy the portal, also a pretty stupid move, why was there no option to connect directly to the ps5, meaning no internet ect... required... i only need it in my home, like 5-10 meters away when i play in bed (currently using switch or steam deck), when in the toillet (currently using phone) ect.. :D Dunno why sony would limit you so much, they should give you as many options as possible to use it.. its a pretty limited device as it is already..
The internet connection required at home is only required for the initial handshake. Yes, it's annoying, but once that handshake has been done, you can completely disconnect the internet connection and it'll work fine (tested & confirmed). I don't think Sony imagined that where there is a WiFi connection, there wouldn't also be an internet connection, which I think is fair enough really.
@@TheGameFatherUK wait wait, so basically i can play on my local Wifi modem / router without the need of a good internet connection? I can put a router to the PS5, in the router goes the LAN from my modem provider wich is a pretty shitty 20mbps, 1 or 2 mbps upload but its just for the connection as you said and the portal will use the local wifi connection instead of the internet??? If thats true then i might think about getting one, i stricly need it for home play.
@@danielwolf6477 Sorry for the late reply Dan, but yes, your understanding is 100% correct :) If you really want to be sure, download the free app on an Android/iOS/PC/Mac and try it first. It's the same tech. Have your console hardwired in, then launch the remote play app on a WiFi device and see how it performs over your internal network :)

Your channel is so underrated. This is very helpful for the not so tech savvy consumer. It's easy to follow and understand. Thank you 👍🏼
I very much appreciate those words! Thank you very much!
Maaaaateeeeee! That's amazing news! So glad it's worked out for you! Enjoy all the gaming my friend!
I'm so glad the video has helped :) That's made my day! Enjoy the lag free remote play and happy gaming my friend!
I’ve watched a few videos on how to help my portal. I have to say, YOU did an amazing job, I’m very terrible with technology, I’m far behind. You did a great job explaining things even to somebody like me, thank you!
Thanks so much for your comment, I'm really glad the video was of some use :)
BIG HELP. glad this issue brought me to your channel. based on how thorough, clear and succinct this video is (and I'm not wishing for a wellspring of other issues here..) its nice to have stumbled upon reliable assistance to come back in future. much appreciated :)
Hey, thanks so much for that amazing comment, really appreciate it! So glad you found it useful :)
Thanks! Hopefully you won't need it when you get your hands on one!
You have got the voice of someone I can listen to. You should do teaching.
If your ps5 is in Standby it will go down to 100 mbit/s. If it is on , you get 1 Gbit/s.
Just check it out, with router info open.
@@flar2me240 you may be correct but in my case it was definitely a broken connection, verified with a cable tester
Thanks for the tip! It's a good place to start actually, ensuring that you cabling is solid, glad you managed to figure that out, must have been a head banger for sure!

Can’t get the WiFi app for Apple to work. It just says it can’t find an airport something

Upload speed
Did you manage to install the WiFiMan app on a mobile device? If so, have that running alongside your Portal (both being connected to the same 5GHz network) and run the latency graph. That needs to be as flat as possible with as low MS response time as possible).
Check this quick Reddit comparison of WiFi performing well for the Portal and one not working well:

I congratulate you for your fantastic videos.
I followed them from A to Z but without any result. I'm 100% sure everything is set up correctly, but it still sucks.
remote play it’s crap.
It's shameful and insulting to consumers that Sony has nothing else to offer for portable gaming.
Sorry you couldn't get it to work for you. Have you checked to see if your ISP uses CGNAT?
@@TheGameFatherUK My router is a ZTE H388XF (AGZHF_1.2.0)
Can you tell me something about it?
Top performance is 12mbps bitrate, but the portal averages around 7mbps.
Muchisimas gracias !!!!
Thia is the BEST
You are welcome! Glad it was helpful :)
I just wish there was a setting in the portal to only allow it to connect to 5 GHz like the PS5 can
The Portal does prefer 5GHz over 2.4, in my experience it will nearly always connect to that over 2.4GHz.
They have a support article on how to do that here:

What's the difference between a router from my ISP and a gaming router?
So, a new router would solve everything, or would settings in the new router need to be changed as well?
Easiest way connect ps5 with lan cable and put your wifi to 5hz
@@TheGameFatherUK Thank you. I ll be playing it alot out of the house. So port forwarding is very relevant to me
Great video but I'm no good at this sort of stuff my portal lags badly tried to log in to sort 5ghz issue but got confused 😢 any other tips welcome
Easiest and first thing is to have the PS5 hardwired into the router if possible. Have you managed to do that?
-40dBm, 20/40/80MHz, ping - 4ms, around 400mbps download and upload speeds, PS5 cable connected to the router (ASUS RT-AX58U), Portal connected via 5G Wifi, using alone channel 40 AND STILL there is LAG, minor but enough to ruin my FC24 and Gran Turismo 7 gameplay, because minor lag on these games = you cant play.... Ive done everything I mean everything and no success ... Also - beamforming enabled... aaand cat 8.1 high class cable and port forwarding - done (but this is in case im not in home)
Oh one more thing - disconnected the HDMI cable from the PS5 (a lot of people say that this is a fix for them), set the PS5 to 1080p, VRR off, 120Hz off, BUT for me nothing helps and there is still this annoying little lag
Funny thing is when i connect back the HDMI cable and connect the portal when a press some button there is ZERO lag when im looking to my TV (same like im using normal controller), but when i look on the portal screen there is this little lag....
Hi just had my sky router changed and now my ps portal will not connect keep getting something went wrong network additional validation required 🤦🏻♂️
Any advice?
Hmm, that's an odd problem. Do any other devices suffer the same issue? And does it work fine up until that moment where it disconnects?

I'm going to have a look at this tonight, I've not tried it myself. I'll come back to you :)
Or I just use the powerline internet instead 🤣
I greatly appreciate your guidance!
So you'd have the router and the extra mesh node in the same room?
I'm not entirely clear on your network setup, are the MESH access points hardwired in?
What if I use LAN Cable, and play with the Playstation portal 2 meters away to another room. Will I lag then?
There are so many variables it'd be difficult to say with any degree of certainty. Hardwire into the router will help for sure. The rest all are all environmental factors like what are the walls constructed with? How many other wireless devices are connected? How many wireless networks are close to yours?
Hardwiring is a good first step. Try that first, if there is still lag, move onto the next steps :)
Portal works great at home, but cant connect it when away from home, ps remote doesnt work either.
Have you tried to open the ports on your router? Or checked that your home Internet service provider doesn't use CGNAT?
@@TheGameFatherUKYeah the ports are open, havent verified that last thing though
If my console is hardwired does distance matter? And should I still change wifi settings?

I've never come across that before, does it work properly on a different device? I'm almost certain it'll be an issue with the phone.
I fixed it. Apparently I had my phone setting wrong lol
One question.... i have seen that ive got the option for 5ghz to set it on 160mhz. Now its on 80mhz....
Is it better to set it on 160mhz?
How can you set the wifi channel ? Can i do it through the wifiman app ?
I know it's a pain, but it really is worth it.
do i need to enable bridge mode on my isp router when i have a 3rd party router?
You don't have to, but it would certainly be advisable to avoid double NAT.
@@TheGameFatherUK where can I check?
@@oiler9350 On your PS5, go to Settings, then Network, then select "View Connection Status". You're looking for the IPv4 address. Then on the Portal, go to Settings, then System, then Device Information. Again, you're looking for the IPv4 address.
Google DNS! Set in router if possible
Why would adding a Google DNS entry in your router improve remote play on a LAN?
what are the ethernet wifi extenders called ?
The LAN over Power ones I use at home are the TP-Link ones. Mine are getting on a bit these days, but the newer ones, the TL-PA717 starter kit are meant to be pretty great too (thats the wired only version, there is a WiFi and a WiFi+LAN version too iirc).
@@TheGameFatherUK thank you
I upgraded to wifi 6 and now my portal runs worse
The Portal doesn't support WiFi 6, it'll still be connecting to either 2.4 or more likely 5Ghz. You'll likely need to select a less congested WiFi channel.
How do you lower latency
Distance and what's between the Portal to the router matters (especially if there are multiple walls in-between or multiple interference devices like microwaves and baby monitors). The quality of the router matters and so too does how much congestion there is in the local area too.
@@TheGameFatherUK so would awifi extender reduce latency? What about ping?
I have a cheap router
Are you saying rooster???😂😂😂😂😂😂

Stupid, you cant just use your home Wifi to use it, i thought about buying a good router wich would be only for PS5 - PS portal connection... but sadly, those ****** made it, you NEED a internet connection otherwise it wont work.. so i did not buy the portal, also a pretty stupid move, why was there no option to connect directly to the ps5, meaning no internet ect... required... i only need it in my home, like 5-10 meters away when i play in bed (currently using switch or steam deck), when in the toillet (currently using phone) ect.. :D
Dunno why sony would limit you so much, they should give you as many options as possible to use it.. its a pretty limited device as it is already..
@@TheGameFatherUK thx, gonna try that first then. :)
Rooooter........
😂
Can't believe how much shit I get for that 😂
@@TheGameFatherUK lol
Playstation sucks! PC Master Race and you know its true!
Been a PC gamer for the best part of 30 years, but you can't argue with the value of console gaming, especially when you look at the cost of GFX cards these days!
My one is there the 5GHz but when I use it it just doesn’t work
