I Played PS5 Games On Remote Play For A Week, Here's How It Went.

- Nowadays there's so many ways to buy and play games, you've got your digital downloads, subscriptions, cloud gaming, and remote play! Remote Play has always been a neat feature, allowing you to remotely access and play your console. Sony went all-in on this back in the day with PS3 and PSP, then PS4 and PS Vita, and now: PS5 with phones, tablets, or PC's. Personally I've never cared much for using this, but I figured let me give it a go for a week straight. So here's how it went! (Now I want a McRib, which if you've watched the above, might make more sense).

Mystics such a chill dude honestly, just wanna go down the pub and have a pint with him
This is exactly why I’m still subbed to him.
Me too. It's a shame I live in Europe
@@unicorntomboy9736 me too! That's why I said pub and pint 😅

I took my subscription away from reviewtechusa and gave it to Mystic. Never going back
I use remote play pretty much exclusively for Ace Attorney. I think it’s good for games that don’t require any sort of precise timing.
What else games do you recommend?
I’m into sports, simulations, & shooters
@@leojohnwayne1422 if it’s not a skill-heavy game it’s probably going to be fine, input feels responsive enough on everything but shooters and sports games if you’re playing competitively, but 100% is nowhere near the actual console experience
I’ve played a ton of South Park the fractured but whole through GeForce now recently while on breaks at work and honestly it’s been fantastic.
I’ve dabbled with it at home for fps games and through Ethernet on a fibre connection, it’s doable but less than ideal for sure. (A lot of my good fortune with GeForce now is due to the fact that I’m physically close to the Canadian east coast servers, Xbox cloud hasn’t been as kind to me unfortunately)
Honestly I used to be of the same opinion but , in anticipation of the portal, I tried playing via remote play on my Mac. I was pleasantly surprised and I was playing God of War Ragnarok too. I ended up beating a couple of bosses using it when all I really wanted was to finish a few sidequests. I still probably won't use it for twitchier games like COD multiplayer and rhythm games, but other games I would be completely fine playing through remote play.
Really dig these videos lately - the trophy hunting videos and this have been really entertaining. I do typically like videos which just bullet point the pros/cons of something like streaming but this, actually kinda brings us along for each experiment and gives a more practical view on how someone would be using this functionality. Additionally this sort of thing often doesn’t get talked about post-launch.
Mystic is so underrated. He has way better content than most other tech channels. It’s a shame not a lotta people know about him.
He has over half a million subscribers, which is not bad at all. That number will keep rising.
@@ArcadianGenesis I agree it’s not bad at all he just deserves more with the amount of effort he puts in his videos
@@quesocheckoGive him a minute. It takes time to grow. His numbers are rising.
@@ArcadianGenesis he’s been on the platform for about 10 years.
@@quesochecko Interesting. I only subscribed last year. I'm guessing he ramped up his production values in recent years though.
So far it seems like the Backbone is kinda worth having if you’re gonna be at home or somewhere with a stable connection. I’ve been looking into getting one for myself if I ever wanna lay back in bed and play something without actually using my tv screen. Love your reviews Ryan!
I've seen reviews on it saying it isn't the best because of the buttons, but i feel like thats a per person issue.
@@xerothehero1704 yeah which I can look passed that since I’m use to the buttons on my Switch anyways. I just wanna know if I buy this and play it at home or if I stay in a hotel at the beach, will it give me a good experience or not
@@brandoncrutchfield2258 at home definitely, at home is the best way to use remote play (which sounds counter intuitive but it’s the best experience) at a hotel it will most likely lag a lot to a point where you might just give up. I have a decent connection at home and trying to play outside of the house is dreadful
@@brandoncrutchfield2258 but the backbone isn’t going to make it better or worse in this case it’s all down to the app and connections
@@xerothehero1704 yeah I know, guess I need to try it with the remote play app first
The thing that always bothered me the most about remote play is the audio delay. I just despise it when the audio lags just a little bit behind.
I don't have any audio delay to be honest I really think it depends on the internet connection and type of phone you running it on
nah mine is frame delay when i play it on ps4
I love the dashes of humor and everyday tests along with tons of useful information! 🙏
I don't comment at all but wow the editing was great in this video I just wanted to point that out as it really deserves the recognition,Great job Mystic 👍
Upgrade my internet to fibre and now getting an upload speed of 70. It’s made such a difference for remote play and probably now one of my favourite features of the PS5. 👌 keep up the great content 😁
Awesome! Yup its such an awesome feature love using it to casual play a game while watching something else on the telly haha
I have been using remote play lately with MW2 and Ragnarok. My PS5 is in the bedroom and the wife doesn’t like it when I play into the wee hours at night when she’s trying to sleep.
So far, 10+ with the iPad Pro and a separate Dual Sense controller. I really can’t tell the difference between playing natively or remotely as long as I’m next to the router. I just installed Chiaki on my Steam Deck and I think it will be my go to setup going forward.
Love the content. Keep it going bro.
I did not expect this vlog style video for the experiment, this was refreshing from the usual settings 💯👌🏾
Man never stop making these outside the box videos. You make the best PlayStation videos.
Glad Ryan gets products sent to him.
Also, that kawakami pillow xD
It's perfect hahaha
Tyrell's gaming room looks awesome. Certainly wouldn't mind something similar one day.
loved the Tyrell mini house tour.
great video s always
Love creative videos like this one Mystic, thank you!!!
i been using it for years since the vita for ark survival evolved. i check on my base from work, feed babies, defend allies, whatever. if i was trying to fight a boss in elden ring or something, yea thats not happening, but it has its uses. Just surprised to see the only thing thats changed over the years was the ui, 60fps and 1080p update. The latency seems pretty consistent over the last 6 or so years.
Damn this would’ve been so useful when I used to play ark :( used my psvita to feed my Dinos.
Ashame that the vita doesn’t work with ps5 though.. 🥲
Funny for trying Elden ring too, torturing as it was to play it away from console I couldn’t progress but luckily managed a platinum. Since then I’ve deleted remote play as to better my patience levels and play in a suitable setting of home. Rates And latency are just not do-able on phone even though the cost of a phone at market stands over a ps5 or Xbox.
@@JReinhart721 It's doable from your home network at least. Let's say you are chillin on your deck or porch, great feature.
@@RowinSchmidt there's a homebrew app you can use for that
This was an insightful video. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have learned that I am as far away as possible from remote play.

I love physical games on disc . Not a fan of digital or playing games on phone .
Love my vita which I still play each day at work .
Ryan you are a legend and massive inspiration to us smaller creators 👍👍
Games on disk don't make sense anymore as you need to download 90% of the game anyways. It's a complete waste of plastic.
@@TheRealCatof Not really. But keep spouting nonsense.
@@zeroskaterz92 What do you mean "not really" please explain
@@zeroskaterz92 no no, it really is.
@@TheRealCatof this isn't true. if you turn off wifi and pop a disk in, your system will install the game fully. sure, maybe the game is broken and it needs patches to function decently, but you can still play a lot of games without ever needing wifi
Awesome experiment for a video. I did want to put my 2 cents in that while I don't use it much there have been times where using remote play on PC has been awesome. When the living room TV is being used or if I'm wanting to hang out in Discord it's been a playable experience. I've even streamed it to my friends in Discord and it went fairly smooth. It's not a solution that'll beat just directly playing without stream services but I'm thankful to have it if I ever need the option.
Recently found your channel and loving the PS content!
I'm a big skeptic on remote play, and even with AX Wi-Fi it's just not quick enough for me at home. Also, on a 1000/50 internet connection I still haven't had luck with streaming it out of the home with low enough latency to be playable.
But one good use I've found is with an Android TV box hooked up to the bedroom TV. It's all wired up with ethernet so I can stream my PS5 games to another room from the console. It works pretty well.
Really love your content, man. Keep it coming! Also, your friend has a badass gaming room. That Simpson’s arcade game is so much fun.
I love these videos. keep them coming Ryan
I used remote play in a practical scenario recently. I traveled to my parents place and played NFS Unbound on my iPad Mini 5. I was very surprised with the responsiveness, while there was a noticeable change in input lag, it was nowhere near enough to actually disrupt my experience or reaction time in a single-player environment, Though I feel a multiplayer game would struggle with this and possible have more input lag by default. Another thing is make sure nothing is downloading while playing remote play, in hindsight this is obvious, but as I was playing I started downloading Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Cyberpunk 2077. The decrease in quality and increase in input lag was IMMENSE, and as soon as I paused both downloads it returned to an extremely playable state.
Do you know what your home internet upload is? And you were using your parents wifi or going off cellular? Just curious to see more of that kind of data since mystics upload speed seems pretty low so streaming is affected by that I'm sure
@@brianp6859 I believe the upload of both my home and parents place is around 10-15mbps. I used the Wi-Fi, however my PS5 itself is connected thru ethernet. I've also found that if I use the PS4, I have more solid experience (which is also on ethernet cable). I've used remote play less often now over the school year. I ended up not buying the Portal tho, due to the price and what it offers.
If you have Verizon fios, they make sure your upload and download speeds are roughly the same. I have 300 down like Mystic but ALSO 300 up, and that makes everything way more stable, especially when on cellular connection
Nice video, man. Really useful before the holidays
Love the honesty in your reviews
The same thing but with a PC is a whole different story, I've been using apps like Parsec or Moonlight and I just can't stop playing my games like this. Sharing my same progress wherever I go just as my settings and info is brilliant. I've never experienced major connection issues outside it was all a smooth great experience and I wished more people actually where able to experience and appreciate remote gaming like I do to this very day!
I think the remote play is probably more intended for when you're home and don't have access to the TV. Or when you're traveling and have a good WIFI connection. I love when I'm into a game on my switch, and even if my wife wants to watch something on TV, I just switch to portable mode. I haven't done this yet for my PS5 games but seems like I could.
Which is why we need a new vita
@@SunnyExMusic Monkeypaw moment lol
My remote play works perfectly over 5g
This is exactly what I use it for and it’s perfect for that (so long as the game isn’t multiplayer because then I just get annoyed if I die and blame the milisecond lag haha) but yeah, I’ve said for weeks now that if my housemates wants to use the TV, even if I’m using it, that’s fine because I can just switch to my tablet and keep playing like a switch. Totes agree with you Keif

Great video! Thanks for sharing
Just ordered one today. I can’t wait to try it out! It’s an open box one for only $50, I couldn’t resist.
Using Remote play both on Xbox and PlaySation to stream to my PC (via Local Area Network) and play that way, i never had big issues. I even stream while playing through remote play. Great video as always.
"there's a lot going on, I want to go back home." This is me every time I leave the house.
My favorite time of the week is when Mystic uploads!!!!
Thanks for the great content as always!!
Remote Play, when it works, is great for slower paced games like turn based rpgs or visual novels. The problem starts to be when the latency even on local connections starts to impact the experience. It is almost unplayable outside the local network unless you are on amazing internet.
I’ve also had the connection be really poor even on a local connection where every 5 seconds the video would drop 10 or so frames but the sound kept going. Makes everything unplayable
This means you have to change your router since your router is your bottleneck here.
Slay the spire or other games similar are really good on remote play since they're turn based card games. You don't need any precise reaction or anything, you just pick the cards you want to play and wait
I’m a truck driver who misses their console gaming. Thank you for finally giving some kind of verdict if how it would most likely go for me with one of these if my console is in UT and I’m in TX.
Love ur boys gaming room/collection looks killer very nice
Remote Play was how I mostly played my PS4 games when I bought it (cause I didn't have a proper HDMI capable TV) and actually was pretty impressed by how I was able to ACTUALLY play all the first two Tomb Raider games.
remote play is pretty solid unless you’re playing online against ppl where you have to time moves
Yes I played on an iPad pro before in my house in another room and for the most part it worked fine...but latency really kicked in in key moments of the game that I was playing making it unfun. Remote Play is good in a pinch if bored but not something I would use regularly. Thanks for the video as always though
i was thinking of playing games off remote play and you made a video about it, thanks 🙏
Great vid Mystic!
I quite like remote play for traveling. I often drive to my parents or on weekend trips with my motorcycle and then obviously don't want to take the big baby with me, but I'll always take my laptop anyway and then I just need the controller to be able to play. It obviously depends on the connection speed (my home network is good, WLAN at my parents is sometimes dicey) and I wouldn't want to play any super fast paced games on it, but for a lot of other games, where the occassional short dip in framerate isn't a problem (puzzlers, sims, turn-based, etc) , it's a really solid way to play while away from home.
Loved this video. Have surprisingly found myself pretty hooked on the remote play feature recently.
It’s obviously not perfect but I wake up early and love getting play time in before work sometimes. It’s good cause I can just pause and come back to finish the level during my lunch break or down time 😂 Kinda cool and gimmicky but fun nonetheless. Where I play I have a strong 5G connection and pretty ideal conditions so as I said, It’s not perfect, but I’m excited to see where it goes in future, and even if it does completely crash and burn, I had the fun while it lasted!!
I love when Tyrell is involved in any way
Just watching this … and i just love Mystic hahaha you make my night .. when you said you want to come back home and make a face 😂😊😊😊 love you 🥰
I have used remote play at work and it works great for single player games. There is a bit of input delay and frame drops at times. But I do have att towers at my job so my signal is always strong.
You can see his "pain" playing remotely on the thumbnail
Just wanna say thank you for your honest review for someone like myself wanting to try remote play but not waste my time on trying to like it or make it comfortable
Love the content. Thank you.
I love my backbone. Though - due to some minor latency, I generally use my backbone for games that don’t require too much timing. So, I use it for visual novels, some action games (got the platinum on Cult of the lamb all on the backbone). Button inputs feel almost precise with my home network connection.
If I were to use my a Bluetooth controller, I notice a lot more latency, so I just use the backbone, since it’s direct Input as opposed to Bluetooth (so it helps with diminishing input lag with it already being streamed)
what visual novels do you play
Never had a problem with backbone One! you just need good reception or good wifi so you won’t have connection issues! It works perfect for taking my ps5 on the go
I appreciate the review on the remote play I might use this in break at work on there wifi sounds cool tk be able to do this you really helppped me out allottt so I appreciate your 7 day exspermant
Looks like your friend liked using the backbone. I like how it can support not just PS games, but steam as well. It’s between that and the portal for me and I’m leaning towards the backbone. Good vid, thanks!
Terrell's game room is awesome! Gorgeous collection and so well arranged. That's how you do it!
Having the possibility to play your favorite games when you’re not even at home is amazing
Gonna be real, as someone who ends up in the hospital a lot this has been a life saver for me.
I have a switch that I bring with me because hospital internet is sometimes a no go, but when I can my PlayStation on remote play is the best
P5 background music and Kawakami body pillow? Mystic's so cultured.
Cloud gaming and remote play both have a long way to go.
The best setup I would recommend is to get a Steam Deck with a dock. I have it and I can play so many games in both handheld mode or on my PC monitor or on my TV. Steam Deck is an amazing versatile tech.
You mean cloud gaming and remote play have come a long way
@@jimmyjay689 I mean sure but also no. It can not be used even with a amazing connection.
@@jimmyjay689 No I mean they still have a long way until they be at an acceptable level.
@@h.a.6060 it's already at an acceptable level is just the fact that the the internet infrastructure of the world isn't on the same level. I've been using remote play for years and unlike in this review I don't have many of these problems. 1gbps download 45 upload and my phone has 5G+. Also make sure you're using your own equipment for internet and not using the ISP provided equipment I suggest.
@@jimmyjay689 been using remote play since the PS3 days (2008), it really has come a long way but the internet of the world is still lagging behind in many places. I hate game streaming too, but recently I've been working a lot away from home and I've been remote playing my PS4 on my vita. And it works surprisingly well.
To make sure it's clear though Cloud streaming and streaming from your console aren't necessarily the same thing. And depending on your situation/location your console is more likely closer to you than a server running for cloud content.
@@mustang750r ya I agree, I will never ever try ps now or anything related game streaming. Strictly cloud gaming. Game streaming just seems stupid and a waste of money, also you need lightning internet for it to work well, which I don't have.
If it works good for u on the Vita, imagine newer devices...Vita only uses 2.5ghz wifi...most devices now use 5ghz+
Dope great review watched everything I'm patiently waiting to see what Sony is going to release as a new handheld!!!
Recognizing that McDonalds and knowing that was the La Galera plaza behind it gave me a jump scare, was not expecting to live in the same area as you haha!
Great video! I've found remote play inside my house very useful when people (my kid, gf, mother in law) are using the living room TV. I can just connect from my laptop or phone and let them watch their stuff. 😁
Did it a lot with my PS4 + Vita. It worked and keeps working amazing for me!
I have top speed internet at 1GBPS and it runs flawlessly away from home. Every once in a while it hiccups but I get around 60fps. I actually was surprised considering I just recently stumbled on it. I love the fact I can PS5 on my PS4 and Pro. Wish I found this feature sooner.
Me too my ps5 tests at 1gbps. And I absolutely love remote play.
The problem is I’ve noticed less and less titles are available for remote play. Which sucks.
I played through Inscryption on remote play in my bedroom. The turn based gameplay made it quite nice!
I’ve actually had a great experience with ps remote play from the ps5 with both Wi-Fi and data streaming, I live in south Florida using 5g it’s actually really great, better than I was expecting it to be.
Your upload speed to outside your network was certainly holding you back. Did you mention if your Playstation was connected via ethernet or wireless because wire would help with latency. You were likely getting well over 300 upload and download while inside your home network because your app and PlayStation were connected directly inside the network and using the routers rated network speed which is different then the network speed the ISP provides.
This video demonstrates that most people don't understand how their home network makes or breaks game streaming. He spent a week "testing" it with pretty limited understanding. I have fiber internet at home and my ps5 is wired. In home streaming is flawless and out of home is almost always really good. Currently playing ffxvi almost entirely remote either via steamdeck/chiaki or via my galaxy z fold 4 on ps remote play when away from home
Not gonna lie the Backbone is a very capable device
14:05 omg you looked so cute but sad 😂😭 great video though. It was interesting to see. I was interested in that backbone but I just can’t deal with streaming
God your intro always makes me so nostalgic I wish the ps5 had xmb and themes
I just bought the backbone for myself last month. I’m really enjoying it so far, but it’s certainly best for certain types of games more so than others. Maybe it’s just a matter of needing to get used to it more. I’ve been working on the 100% for god of war, and I find that it’s definitely harder to play with the backbone, but definitely not impossible. While I’m also playing final fantasy 7 remake, which has simpler controls and is much better suited for it. And then I’m also playing midnight suns which is perfect for the backbone since it’s not reliant on quick decisions.
Remote play best usage is for the more “slower” paced game, so when you are chasing a trophy such as Yugioh, turn based Final Fantasy etc
12:55 Terrell’s collection tho! My GOD!! 😍🙌🏾
11:27 always a surprise, but a highly welcomed one when we see Terrel in a video.
The boys are back in town! :)
I'm getting myself a Steam Deck pretty soon. I'm going to try Xbox Cloud Streaming on it. See if it is a good enough experience to play on a regular basis.
Steam Deck gameplay on Xbox Cloud Streaming is alright, if not a little slow depending on where you are connected to. When I played it at my university, the connection was pretty stable with some minor hiccups like the quality dropping. But it is still playable, depending on which genre of game you are playing.
I just think at this point in time where internet connection still is not reliable to play video games, it's more practical for Sony to make a mobile device like Steamdeck that can play PS4 and PS5 games directly (albeit at lower resolutions or frame rates perhaps) from installation. But Sony obviously doesn't care about that even though it can bring them opportunities to sell more digital games. Not a smart move in my opinion.
I love the backbone! I use it to play Dreamlight Valley and it works great👍🏼
Nice video and review 👌
Honestly, if your willing to pay a small fee, the PSPlay app is way better than the official app imo. It just works great and I can play on my Nvidia Shield too, so that's a plus.
I was just going to suggest the application. I have been playing on my breaks and lunchtime at work, and it's been working great. Best part, I had credit in my google opinions app, so I basically got the app for free.
@@AhmazinSKM Big this. Give Google Opinion Rewards a month or three (not that long), and you can get this virtually free. I love the button interface for PSPlay, it makes it really easy to play simple games like Uno and Minecraft Dungeons. Since I have a Samsung S10+, I like plugging my phone into a hotel room TV with an adapter and playing with my DS4. I've been able to play Black Ops Cold War and keep a positive K/D. Really nice, much better than the native PS Remote Play.
i have a question regarding the Backbone, what happens to the touch pad in this case? plenty of games use the touchpad as a button at the very least and as a touchpad proper at most
Have to touch the top of the screen that you are using. It’s so annoying.
Good Sir, nice pillow over there, teachers are always the best
Great video Ryan, i do use remote play from time to time on my ipad pro and it works well, you can use a steam deck as well for remote play on ps5 but i havent tried that yet with mine but that would be a cool video
I used to use PS4 remote play a lot a few years ago. While the experience isn’t great, I feel you just need to temper your expectations with it.
My partner was at university at the time in a different city and I’d travel down every weekend to see her. She also worked over the weekends so while she was at work I’d chill on remote play on her iMac.
While the experience wasn’t perfect, it was most certainly better than not having the option at all.
Remote play on a desktop/iMac is definitely going to be better than a phone or tablet
I wonder why was your cellular connection so poor. I tried playing Control on cellular connection in Europe and it was quite decent experience with good resolution and not much input lag.
My experience exactly
Thank you for this video... I've been contemplating about starting remote play on my phone and tablet. I've never done remote play before so this video was very helpful. Also I was wondering if I should get the backbone or just connect my DuelSense to my mobile devices... think I'll stick with the DuelSense for now!
Playing on my phone via gamesir x2 + psplay app on my job on lunch time via 4g connection every day, its great!
My tv broke a month ago and my wife won’t let us replace it because we are ‘saving money’.
Tried remote play with this exact ps5 dual sense phone clip and my IPhone 12. Shitty experience. I don’t look forward to weekends anymore. Very sad.
I did play through Inside when it launched on Ps Plus via the remote play tho. Enjoyed the game because it was short.
That's why I love the Wii U, you can play almost every game on the gamepad with no latency, rock solid 60fps and it's comfortable to hold.
Don't get married
Get a new wife.
The official app has problems this has been known and updates have been super slowwww there. On android try PS Play it’s $7 and it’s better than the official Sony remote play app. I was close to getting a backbone but then I decided against it. PS Play gives me rumble and dualsense features via OTG wired connection on android. Plus I can change the light of the dualsense to whatever I want. Also a bunch of 3rd party controllers are supported on PS Play and there’s aspect ratio, you can fill the entire screen and remove those black bars with no real loss to important screen info. I know using a paid 3rd party app may put off some but it’s worth it yo…PS Play on android get it.
Love the hypothetical scenarios satire pretty funny
Great video ❤❤
My Xbox and game pass in combination with a Kishi is such a stable experience for me personally on 5G. Reducing latency by having your controller connected through usb-c is such a huge factor compared to connecting through Bluetooth connection.
Soon gonna be a normal with the project q
Nice video! I wonder if Mystic would try this kind of an experiment with the upcoming ps portal?
Thanks for this. My plan is to use it with my iPad when my wife is using the TV, so I think it should work quite well for that.
I love remote gaming. My only issue with it is most controllers don't feel as good as stock controllers and stock controllers aren't convenient for portability
