  • We finally paid a visit to South Padre Island and Boca Chica State Park. South Padre Island is a thriving tourism based beach town that sits on the barrier island of the same name. Boca Chica State Park lies to the south and includes the mouth of the Rio Grande River and Elon Musk's Space X Launch Facility.

The beaches were closed right after due to high tide the tide came up over the road leading to Boca Chica Beach. Glad y’all had fun. My family and I exclusively go to Access 6. Set up a canopy and enjoy the day there. If y’all come down again let me know and I’ll get you to some good food spots!

I was thinking when we were there at Boca Chica that the high tide must really make that impassible. Thanks for the offer and thanks for watching! Very cool area!

was the Boca Chica beach drive-able with 2WD or is 4WD needed? Also can you physically (regardless legal or illegal) walk to Mexico across the Rio Grande? Was there border patrol there guarding the border when you were there?
As for Beach Access Road 6 at South Padre, is drive-able with 2WD up to the Mansfield Cut? I'm plan on going on this trip.

When we went to both places, it was all done in 2WD. It really depends on the beach conditions though. Rain can make 4WD necessary in a pinch. I personally wouldn't go as far as the Mansfield Cut without 4WD or if I had 2WD and the conditions were good, I'd probably want a buddy in another vehicle to tag along, just in case I'd need a tug. Other than that, on a good day, definitely 2WD. We saw people in Mustangs and Challengers on the beach at access road 6 that day. Boca Chica is narrow as you head south though. There were no border patrol at all. As far as I could tell, you could just walk right across, although there is a river channel there so it's deeper than it looks and I'm sure there's a current.

@@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy did u see anybody walking across rio grande? I can't believe no border patrol u saw there. In San Diego/Tijuana Pacific Ocean Border Field State Park I've been there before, there is a tall long fence with border patrol watching out 24/7

@@prandomable I did not see anyone crossing the Rio Grande. I guess crossings at this location aren't as frequent? Boca Chica State Park is a pretty isolated area though. There's only one road in and out of the park and there is a border patrol check point along that road. The geography of this area is completely different than the San Diego/Tijuana area which is highly urbanized and isn't separated by body of water.

@@prandomable Very true. I imagine it's been done before many times. Perhaps even in a small boat. But once they cross over to the US side, they are basically land-locked with only Highway 4 leading in or out and that's because of the Browsville Ship Channel is to the north and the Rio Grande to the south.

They did not ask for ID to enter the beach. Ellos no pidieron identificación para entrar a la playa.
