one of the best weeks of my life, spring break 1990 in South Padre Island, got a tattoo from a guy with a wooden leg and survived a drunken night in Matamoros!
You're very welcome. He was an iconic and friendly character that surfed longboard and charged big waves in Mex. Again, great to have some of his work, stoked ..
I was there a year ago in a business trip and yeah, I agree that SPI is amazing and that’s because it is so popular among many Mexicans, especially from Monterrey, it is basically our closest beach we have (4 hours away). And I will never forget that sunset I saw it with my eyes.
SPI definitely has the bluest water but it isn't the only beach with blue water on the Texas Coast. You can find blue water from Matagorda Island & Mustang Island all the way down to SPI.
Hey Nick, inspired by your channel I did a week long road trip across all of Arizona last week and it was amazing! The only place I went to that had bums was downtown Phoenix, the rest of the state was perfect. I went to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, all of Route 66, The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, Tucson, Saguaro NP, Bisbee, Tombstone, and Sierra Vista. Saguaro NP was the highlight of the trip as well as Seligman on Route 66!
My best friend and I, worked at different banks, and in 1988 there was a February holiday...in Monday. We both called in the previous Friday - and took a spur of the moment "road trip", I packed a giant ice chest , and we went to Pasre ! The most memorable things about the trip; my car a 1985 Chevy Cavalier.... the left headlight kept going out - kept unplugging itself, and we got stopped MANY times by State troopers and Highway patrol. The BEST thing, my friend had packed EVERYTHING - even an electric skillet, and after getting to Padre, the next morning - she was cooking breakfast on the balcony of the cheap motel ! Also, when driving back North toward home ---- the last day - I got off to get gas, she went to sleep - and I drove over 1 hour the WRONG way ! When she awoke, we weren't much closer to home ---- I didn't tell her until years later !
Years ago we drove from Marquette, Michigan to South Padre in an almost new 1964 Lincoln Continental. We got drunk as skunks, and then Bill got us stuck in the sand when we drove past the pavement onto the sand..I found two flattened metal trash cans we stuck under the tires to get us outta there..the good ole days!
Pretty nice place, especially during the summer and early fall. Sept and early October are great, after the big summer crowds and before the winter northern winds.
I was there in 1969 at 16 yrs. old. Didn't have all the buildings, we went deep sea fishing and to the beach where a girl with us got a bad sting by a jelly fish. You could walk with your girl friend for miles it seemed and not see any one else. I enjoyed it. The country was a lot nicer than it is today.
I have been out here. My uncle and I went out there and rented a boat and we saw pink dolphins and several cool birds in the bay. I also liked the elevated trails they have there.
Watching this from the other side of the world. I am serving overseas and your videos help keep me feeling connected to the U.S. Thanks, and best wishes to all for 2024.
Tx beaches arent so bad, the water color just varies day to day and from one time of yr to another. This day for example is actually a pretty bad day for South Padre. Usually from May through Oct its much prettier. North winds push browner brackish waters out of rivers and bays out into the gulf. South or easterly winds bring in blue clear warmer waters. Its just abt that simple. The waters are all pushed out and choppy in this video with a strong north wind. I can tell just by seeing it and being very familiar with the coast.
Love this place! My buddy moved to cc and we visited about 4 times in the past 2 years. Almost moved here. Had fun camping on the beach, which is the best part of this undeveloped coastline!
Nick the island has 3 tourist seasons. Spring break in March and April. Winter Texans in January and February, but also the rich Mexicans come from Monterey and Mexico city in July and August to escape the heat of the Mexican desert. They also own a lot of. The condos and Real estate on the much of the island to the surprise of many. Brownsville and Laguna Heights provide a lot of the maids, waiters, etc, that take care of the tourists needs. Sometimes it takes several hours to cross the only bridge to the island when concerts or other activities, Next time pay the ten dollars to enter Isla Blanca park at the south end and enjoy. You did a great job capturing sunrise on gulf.
@@dguard24 May is fairly low key time between tourist seasons but can be warm. This year with three LNG plants being built nearby and expansion at SpaceX the countryside is growing rapidly. An extra 20,000 people in the area making the island more popular. But the soothing gulf breeze and kind people are still abundant and will welcome your return.
In 1980 I married my first wife and her uncle owned a condo at south padre. The condo was next door to the lady who raised sea turtles. It was right on the beach and her turtles were huge! Anyway,... memories!

Hey, Hello again everybody, Greetings from Newcastle, England, UK. This is by a long shot my favourite RUclips channel and I get a little excited every time I see a new video has been posted.
Those old Arizona roads, reminds me of the time in 1977 when I went from Kingman Arizona 117°, to Juneau Alaska 67°. They both increased 2° that day late in the day. I never heard of it🤠
It’s actual Mexican food considering that Matamoros is just across the border so it’s as close as you’re gonna get to Northern style Mexican food any more north you go in Texas and the food is actually Tex Mex but you wouldn’t know that because I can see you’re from some other place where Taco Bell is Mexican food. Get it right🤷🏻
I was in Port Aransas on the northern part of the island two weeks ago, visiting a friend, just hanging out and partying. Very quaint, pleasant place. The lady you interviewed had a very pleasant voice.
Another great video, Nick. Just wanted to say thanks for showing me Parts of Texas I have yet never visited. South Padre Island looks nicer and cleaner than other parts of The Texas Coast. Definitely all about the seasonal tourist dollar. Nice to visit in winter and spring. But that's where it stops for me. Too humid and hot in South Texas to live year round. For each their own. I am enjoying this great Texas Adventure you are on, Nick. Thanks again.
In my teen/young adult years (1967-1977) we made many trips to S.Padre from the N. Dallas area. Back then the 'strip' was only 1/4 or less developed. Only ate at a fancy sea food restaurant there one time in all those years, and never stayed in a motel. We got ice, beer, and bait on arrival, then spent all our time camping out north island where there were almost no people.
Lived in South Texas for 20 years. Always went to Corpus Christi, Port A, South Padre, Mustang Island, etc. Of course we didn’t go during spring break lol It was always fun to run into snow birds lol
Always had a good time in spi they always had a laid back atmosphere except for spring break went to 3 motorcycle rallies there 1st week of oct but they stopped that but they have a great sandcastle contest good fishing and good restaurants but it's been 7yrs since I've been back.
Glad you got to enjoy the local beach I grew up with! I like it because it's a natural beach that's not full of artificial sand, has amenities but is not overly developed, & is a very peaceful place outside of the month of March. That said, locals don't go there or stay there during Spring Break; they leave in February & come back in April. The level of disrespect & litter is insane, so its probably for the best that we're not around.
Thanks for another great video Nick ❤ I always wanted to travel n still do. Being on SSI i cant afford to, so i love your videos ❤. Im still loving that Rodeo ❤🤠
This is the best SPI video I have seen. People should pay attention to the video. It"s not promoting or demoting the Island. Thanks for doing this video.

Corpus Christi is great fun for a ‘dirty weekend’ as the English say. I had one of my most memorable times there on a completely random spontaneous weekend.
When the water gets muddy it's due to heavy rainfall in the interior of Texas. Even Galveston has crystal clear water when there's not a lot of rain to the north.
LOVE SPI and Louie's is the best! Anytime except Spring Break is good time and they even have a big fireworks display every night in the summer months.
The biodiversity is huge in that area. I notice you didn't talk about the laguna madre, one of the very few hypersaline lagoons in the world. One of the main reasons development is limited is that the majority of the island is protected land. I hope it stays that way. The angling community hopes so as well. And barrier islands will typically have muddy sand, especially if you are near the tideline.
I agree ❤️❤️ always wanted to travel n still do but I'm on SSI n can't afford to. So I love that Nick travels n shows me all kinds of great places ❤ Im still loving that Rodeo ❤🤠

I was born in Port Aransas,TX a little town at the north end of Padre Island its way more commercialized than it used to be in the 80s and 90s I miss that place I live in Gulfport, Mississippi now
End of January 2024 a block of 65 lbs of cocaine washed up on the beach at Beach Access 3 in South Padre Island. We used to weekend at South Padre Island in the early 1980s to early 90s. It was before MTV made it a Spring Break destination. We would camp free on the beach, sometimes in a tent, sometimes in a small camper. It was quiet and lovely. We live near Harlingen now, about a 40 minute drive to SPI. It's not the same place anymore. Still we go there for the restaurants.

The water has gotten better, but the bad feed off of the Mississippi cursed most of the Gulf coast. Padre is an awesome place to go. In the early 80s the sunk a few ships to create a reef for Padre. Waves have gotten better , and tractors comb the beaches several times a week. They work hard for tourists. ❤❤
Hey Nick and Mappy! Loved the Sand Castle Architect, she is so mellow! For some reason i just don't think of beaches when i think of Texas though! 🤷♀️ Thanks for taking us along. 😊❤️
I'm also from a beachtown about 5 hrs north of Corpus (Galveston Island ,Tx) The reason most don't think of beaches when Texas comes to mind is prob due to Hollywood bs. Ive never seen cactus, desert, or heard the word "howdy" used in real life besides in the movies.
4:40 The island was never part of the Republic of Texas. The southern border was the origin of the US Mexican war in 1845 since Mexico claimed the Nueces river vs. the US claiming the Rio Grande. It was settled at the end of the war with the Guadalupe-Hidalgo treaty. BTW, the footage of Rd 100 in the 9:45 timemark seems to show the tract that is still under dispute with the state, due to the interpretation of that treaty and the land ownership rights of some descendants of the first Spaniards that settled in the area. 6:30 The island is at the same latitude as Palm Beach, FL and its Köppen climate zoning is humid subtropical like in Orlando, FL. 9:20 Drug smuggling may (or may not) take place along the beaches. However, it was documented the cotton smuggling during the Civil war since all the other ports of the confederacy were blocked by the union’s navy. They were labeled as “product of Mexico” and some people made fortunes with that (ask JPMorgan folks in NYC). 9:50 Texas allows any person the freedom of transit along the shore, but no right to erect any structure between the “green line” and the water even if it is your own property (I’d wish California learned from it). 24:20 Totally agree that property values went through the roof. A few years ago, I was considering retiring there (for other reasons I changed my mind). Nowadays, many fellows that work in the island actually live in nearby inland towns (Port Isabel, mainly). I liked the video; I think it captured how underrated it is outside TX. One thing that wasn’t mentioned, which is applicable to all the Gulf Coast is the incidence of hurricanes. It is a matter of time to go through one (I did 4 times). Say that insurance premiums are not as high as FL’s, but they will impact anyone on a fixed income.
Those SPI streets and houses around 11-12:00 look amazingly like SW FL beaches before Hurricane Ian-except the houses in Fla cost 2-3x more for what appears basically the same structure. Now, of course, they’re all gone-except for the construction where even bigger, and more expensive, houses are being built. All it takes is one big storm. But apparently there’s always somebody who’ll pony up.

sand near the water is called mud, move to the shore where its dry, and its sand. sand is just dry mud. sometimes.

Hey Nick and Mappy! Loved the Sand Castle Architect, she is so mellow!
For some reason i just don't think of beaches when i think of Texas though! 🤷♀️
Thanks for taking us along. 😊❤️
I'm also from a beachtown about 5 hrs north of Corpus (Galveston Island ,Tx)
The reason most don't think of beaches when Texas comes to mind is
prob due to Hollywood bs. Ive never seen cactus, desert, or heard the word "howdy"
used in real life besides in the movies.
Maybe you should look at a map more often. We have a very long coast line Texas.
@@scottangle574 It jusr isn't the first thing that comes to mind when i think of Texas.
Has little to do with a map, or the coastline.
@@JRTexx i agree 👍
Oh I talk about that a lot soon Don
You did it again Nick! Bloody beautiful!! ♥️♥️♥️
I'm a native Texan and last year was the first time I visited SPI. I loved it and will be going back again this year same time. ❤🤠
I ❤ your videos nick. Keep them coming 😊
Nice to see some of the good stuff in America!
That Sandcastle woman at the end seemed super sweet & wholesome
Being her Grandkids would be dope I imagine
Good afternoon sir 🎉! Reminds me of Virginia Beach ⛱! I grew up in Norfolk, but lived in Virginia Beach 17 years 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉!
