I really wouldn’t doubt if both Russia and the United States had an agreement before hand so both the top people get rich while using us as cannon fodder. You are correct. I moved to Houston area 5 years ago and I'm leaving asap. I've seen a shooting attempt, road rage and numerous drug deals. And homelessness brought on by our govt.

I’ve driven through a lot of states and Texas has the MOST aggressive drivers. I don’t get why everyone is in such a hurry just to go sit on their couch.

1. Don't walk in the tall grass.
2. If you're a woman, don't go to a gas station at night.
3. Don't honk at anyone unless you want a gun pointed at you.

I moved out of Houston in 2000. In the Harwin/Bissonett area. I haven't been back in a minute, just a couple times for work-related training around the George R. Brown. So I don't know what it's like now. But I adopted a few additional rules of my own when I was there. Those aren't specific to Houston, just good rules for any high crime city. I lived in small Texas towns between Waco and Weatherford since then and it's a whole different world.
- Don't carry cash, or if you do have any, don't tell anyone you have cash or give any to panhandlers.
-If you rely on public transportation (which I did), don't plan your route to have transfers, stops or layovers anywhere you wouldn't go on foot.
- Don't buy, carry or wear anything you can't afford to lose.
-Don't stop to talk to anybody, especially when it's "I like those shoes, lemee see those shoes (watch, chain, hat, etc). or anybody that wants to "talk to you for a minute."
Maybe it was just overly cautious; in seven years in Houston I only had my apartment burglarized twice, I only got propositioned by prostitutes (male and female) a couple of times but I never got robbed on the street, got into a fight, or had any kind of violent interactions. I don't know how much of that was because of any of those rules or because I never went to Acres Homes, Third Ward, Sunnyside, Fifth Ward etc. Maybe it's different now, I dunno. Maybe better but probably worse.

Story about the area at 13:50 (Dennis St, a few blocks from Scott St.) I got lost one night coming into town. I was supposed to go to U of H and Siri (who is actively trying to kill me) routed me through this area at about 10 PM.
The streets were so packed with dealers and buyers in a middle-of-the-street drug market that there was no way to turn around; a line of cars in front of me and people walking behind my car blocking me in. A couple of guys pressing drugs up against my window before I waved them off. Go to this same area after dark and you will catch a whole different kind of video. This place looks downright tranquil compared to what you'll find at 10PM.
I drove dump trucks in Katy 20 years . I was sent to 3 Ward one day and had the same thing happen except a car would stop and people would run to it to purchase. This was in the afternoon
I read light meters in Houston in '74 and '76. Even then the unemployed did not start stirring until 10-ish and most didn't get out until noon at the earliest. This was before crack when the terminally unemployed were all alcoholics.
I recall the area near U of H. Lots of shotgun shacks that were already old and rundown a half century ago. I had to read a meter that was behind the check in desk of a motel. Because of my sheltered, middle-class Leave It To Beaver/Mayberry upbringing I was flabbergasted to see this establishment rented rooms for 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes then whole hours after that. Some areas around the U of H have been scary for over a half century.
The drivers were so shocked by the dude actually picking up trash on the corner that they just ran right into each other! Even Nick couldn't believe it.

My guess is that the guy in the pickup was texting coz he blazed through the intersection several seconds after it turned red for him.
Longtime friend of mine was released from Huntsville 3 years ago. Third ward was home 35 years ago. Took him 1 year to move to San Antonio and put his hard earned a professional Doctorate and PHD to good use - ministering, outreach and assistance in helping released inmates get on their feet the right way. Self employed master leather craftsman and bootmaker too!
The lady whose car got hit yelled at the other driver that he ran a red light. I live here, and this is one of the most dangerous aspects of living here. Running red lights is OUT OF CONTROL. Recently five people were killed downtown when a man ran a red light at high speed. At every intersection people run the left turn light, sometimes 5-6 cars. You learn to wait and look left before you proceed through an intersection. I am so sick of it.
Poor UofH football players too!
In Houston and all surrounding areas is to wait a couple of seconds after a light turns green, look left and right, and try and keep a larger vehicle on your left. It's self defense for drivers because of the runners who plow through intersections.
You're absolutely right if you're talking about that one in downtown by the North freeway H-Town native also and yes Houston is probably one of the biggest cities in the country for murder

As a native Dallasinian, I have to tell you that the majority of bad drivers in Texas are not originally from Texas.
They are usually transplants.
From places like LA, Milwaukee, Chicago, Memphis, ect.
Here in Dallas, we have the worst drivers in the country.
I see that red light crap every day here.
As well as road rage.
One time, I was on my way to Acura of Dallas to get my car serviced.
A wreckless driver in a black Dodge Ram did not like that I was going the speed limit of 65 MPH.
Instead of simply speeding ahead of me, he did something absolutely barbaric.
He pulled out a large dirty blue tarp, and threw it behind at my windshield.
The dirty blue tarp completely covered nearly every inch of my windshield!
I tried to use my windshield wipers, which had caused the tarp to become stuck!
Within a few valuble seconds, I had to roll down my windshield and stick my head out like a dog and react rapidly.
Thank God that I had barely managed to carefully brake to roll my SUV into an empty feild full of tall grass and brush.
By the grace of God, a pile up during rush hour near DFW Airport did not happen.
It was too close for me not to confide in a higher power.
The bottom line is;
I am absolutely astonished by the amount of ludicrously that has migrated here in the past 5 years.
How low can we get as a city and as a society?

Always amazed by your bravery! The man you interviewed seemed like a decent guy. I really hope he stays safe and can get the help he needs. I admire how he admitted what the issue was there and then was humble enough to admit he succumbed to it also, but wanted to get off of the drugs.

I grew up in southwest Houston near W Bellfort and S Gessner. However, I was born a mile or two from 3rd ward and one thing I truly know is that the neighborhoods around it like Sunnyside and South Park have been consistently dubbed as the 10 most dangerous neighborhoods in the country by multiple sources. 3rd ward has been undergoing some gentrification over the past few years at the same time sparking controversy in how its pricing out longtime residents there.
5th ward is run down and it is, however it was worse decades ago.
5th ward ain't all that bad anymore. The east/southeast half is all Mexican families now and it's downright quiet. 3rd ward gets rough still but it's got nothing on Sunnyside, South Park, Cypress Station, Greenspoint, even parts of Alief/Bissonnet.
It used to be a lot more dangerous. I scored there in the 70's and you could get robbed or shot very easily.

It's seriously depressing to see the state of these areas, but we need to know about these forgotten people and places before anything can improve. Of course, the frustrating thing is wondering what in the world we can do to reverse the course toward ruin.

I saw it coming in the past few years of what Houston was to become prior to leaving. I left in 2018 after 22 years and moved many hours west of it. I missed Houston, it was a fun city. But many people I talk to tells me it has become far worse since I left. Once a fun and beautiful town is now ultra-violent.

The ACTUAL data/stats shows violence, or at least murders, was worse in the 80s/90s. Up until the pandemic, violence had been generally declining since around the late 90s/2000s I think. This is according to data. So whatever you "SAW" Houston was becoming BEFORE 2018, or whatever people are saying it is NOW ultra-violent have either a faulty PERCEPTION or are in their IMAGINATIONS, hahaha! It was WORSE decades ago around the time you were here 22 years ago.

I remember back in the day when they were promoting "killer bees" as a looming threat from South America/Mexico coming up through Texas or the southwest USA in general. Whatever happened to that? I recommend a person base their views on HARD or at least soft DATA... on something (not necessarily 100%) empirical, but even then people's interpretation of stats can be faulty.
houston was way worse in the 70s to early 90s. 700 murders in 1980. This year homicides actually decreased by 20 percent.

Yep. People have certain false narratives and perceptions they go by that are not based in reality. A lot of times these narratives are driven by those who want to manipulate people through fear for the purpose of political agendas, or it could just as well be for ratings, as sensationalism sells in media.
I left in '18 also. I'm in the rural Hill Country west of SA. I was born in Houston and grew up in Spring Branch, the poorest part north of I-10 and near the West Loop. I graduated in '74. It's unrecognizable now. English is a minority language. Gentrification really got into gear 15 years ago. C'est la vie. The last area I lived in was Champion Forest. Though most of the houses were built in the 70s they held their value well. Bc it was in the County rather than in Houston none of the woke crap occurred. The Constables weren't affected by $h¡thead politicians.

When they were filming the trilogy, crime was MUCH higher in the US than it is now. Like 2 or 3 times higher. So their predictions were actually wrong. It got a lot better since then. It's still terrible though.

A lot of the entrenched poverty you see is because Houston is actually still fairly affordable to live in compared to other major cities. That's why there's no where near as many homeless camps as in California

I've lived in Houston since 1957 and this didn't seem bad at all. I'm so used to driving through these areas it just felt like home.I'm on the Northside.
To be fair, we've been telling y'all about these conditions for at least 30 years now. Texas has a whole genre of hip hop that's highlighted the poverty specifically in 3rd Ward, 5th Ward, SouthPark, Mo City, Texas City, Galveston, Hershel Wood, and all other spots. I'm surprised by your surprise tbh.
I lived in the far east part of Quail Valley in MoCity from '92 to '09. I saw it deteriorate some but I would rate the Quail Valley area in general as safe as of '09.
Nick I grew up 20 minutes from downtown Houston. 30 years ago, we knew to stay out of these areas. I can't imagine what it's like now. "Thanks" for the update.
Advice from a Houston native
1. Crime and poverty gets worse as you get closer to the city center but is upscale in downtown.
2. Once you reach outside Beltway 8 in all directions communities get considerably nicer.
3. When you find yourself in the hood keep to yourself and respect those that approach you. You may walk out with your life.
Number 3 is correct, if you grew up in The South Bronx like I did.

#2 ain't necessarily true. Alief and Cypress Station are two of the worst hoods in Houston and they're both outside of the Beltway. Cypress Station ("Nawfside", generally) being the worst in the city, arguably.
What you said is mostly on point I was born and raised here grew up near S Gessner and W Bellfort and it’s not a good area to live as well. In the years I’ve lived here. I rarely have any problems and the main thing I did was avoid unnecessary talk with just about anybody because a disagreement of a conversation here can quickly escalate.
For sure. I grew up hoopin’ around town. You call a foul? Cool you can have it buddy I ain’t getting shot over this. If you keep to your business in Houston you’re MOSTLY okay. You can get unlucky and get in the wrong place at the wrong time but you can mostly stay out of trouble if you shut up and mind your own lol

As a Houston resident myself. The neighborhood that nick visited in fifth ward well the bad part of it that place is known for a bunch of shootings because I don't live far from except I live in the better part of fifth ward. Nick described the third and bad sides of the fifth ward accurately, thooo.
I had a good friend who lived in the nickel not far from a mortuary. A lot of the people are good people. Our federal govt allows this blight. If it would just serve it’s intended purpose - protect the country, things would be a lot better.

This video only highlighted some of the worst sections of Houston. There are still plenty of nice areas in and around town depending on what your lifestyle preference is. I'm in the far-southeast suburban area known as Clear Lake. Great housing options, restaurants, shopping, recreation, and access to Clear Lake and Galveston Bay if you like the coastal lifestyle. Come and visit!

As a houstonian from the SW area and went to college at TSU in 3rd Ward around 2005 3rd Ward just an extension of Midtown (an upscale area). UofH also in the 3rd Ward around the corner from TSU, 3rd and 5th Ward are becoming more gentrificated as the years go by. Oh, the road rage especially near downtown is CRAZY, but then again it's like that city wide. Post 2020 brought many out of towner's with their bad driving habits.

More than half the people I met in the Navy that were from Texas were from Houston. From the nice suburbs like The Woodlands to the wards. Believe it or not, I’ve never heard any of them say they hate Houston which is surprising!

Being from Finland I cannot believe inner cities are so bad in the USA. Here apartments near inner city are more expensive because the services and amenities are better plus work places are usually closer in the downtown area. USA is so different.

Some inner cities are good some are bad. This is just Houston, which is the worst of the largest cities in Texas (And he didn't really show Downtown where all this don't exist). Dallas' Downtown is very nice, Fort Worth is even nicer, and San Antonio's Downtown is real nice too.
Everything ain't black and white. Just like my Finnish friend tells me that Helsinki is very depressing both by look and feeling and most people there are very boring, introverted, "With little personality" making him feel very lonely and wanting to move here to meet different people.
I know that, that's just Helsinki, and Finland is a beautiful country with a lot to offer. You can't say all cities in the U.S. are bad 'cause of a handful.
All that ghetto is owned by investors. The land has great value it's adjacent to downtown and will be new pricey townhomes in next 10 years. Beltway8/59 in Southwest area is the real action. I lived in all the Htown hoods. Wilcrest Park on Spice Lane, Club Creek, S. Gessner at Gustine, Fondren/Beechnut and a decade at E. Tidwell and Mesa. Drugs and poverty were everywhere. If you ain't in the game you will be fine.

I believe that is what is happening across America. They purposely introduce drugs into areas, wait for the blight, then the investors pick it up for pennies & build $$ homes on it, netting $$$.

You are right about the third ward but it is slowly getting gentryfied around the western edges. But crime is rampant all over the city including the burbs. I have been here since the 70s and it has changed a lot.

I was a city bus driver in Waco areas and let me tell you I saw people making soap in kettles in the front of their shacks plus children had toys like a stick and some roap. I would wave at the poor kids as I drove by and they would just stare as I drove the bus. Sad really sad. Mules tied up in front yards and pigs lots of pig farms
I used to live in the Spring area before I fled the country in 2018. About 2-3 years later, my old roommate's grandson was in the bedroom next to the one I had rented when a car had gone by and shot him through the window, grazing his head. He is fine now. I'm glad I live in India. I'm an American. They'd have to throw me back every day. Disclaimer - I am here legally and follow all the immigration laws of my host country.
I guess you were in the part of the Third Ward that hasn’t been gentrified into $800,000 townhomes which you can see at 7:05. Not disputing it’s bad, but as a local I hear about more crime in the Sharpstown area and Sunnyside, west of Hobby Airport.
The bloody nickel looks way different now than when I went by in the early 2000’s. Thank God I got out of there alive.

The 70s was before crack occurred. I read light meters all over the Houston area in the mid-70s including all the wards Nick visited. All the terminally unemployed back then were just run-of-the-mill alcoholics. If there were any gangs I never encountered them.
Houston resident here! My gym is on the southside of humble (you referenced it as one of the worst towns in texas/country) and tbh, ive never had an issue, in fact everyone ive met is nicer in those areas to me than people in the woodlands/college park areas. Stayed in alief for a while too, never had problems as well, same story. Just comes down to treating everyone as a person tbh

I’m in a unique situation and that I’m a gangster thug, who is also a drug user/dealer. I am looking for a community in extreme decline where I can squat in a minimum four bedroom three bath home. I have three baby mamas and nine kids that live with me. The home must be near a ratty, overgrown park where I can ply my drug dealing trade. There also must be a liquor store very close by that I can occasionally rob, yet more often buy my 40oz. of mad dog. I would like a place with minimal police presence and a justice system that is very light on crime. What do you think? I’m anxious to move as I have many many warrants.

Massive gentrification in the Heights going back to the early '90s? I grew up in Spring Branch. I graduated from SBHS in' 74. As late as the very early 70s mom still shopped at Kaplan's Ben-Hur occasionally.

The crazy part is, the property values are so low, a single middle class person could go in there, buy up most of these derelict properties, kick everyone out and build as they see fit. I come from a small town that suffered from crime for years because of Katrina evacuees blighting the area, after about 5 years of non stop crime, outsiders(predatory serial gentrifiers) started attempting to buy up property and luckily locals started taking notice before they got a foot hold in and started buying up the cheap property themselves & maintaining it, in fact, the mayor was having town hall meetings literally begging people to buy properties for pennies on the dollar, long story short, it was largely a success, the only remnant of the out of towners was a coffee shop (as always) that never got off the ground. My best answer of why they came is because the town is next to a large body of water I’m sure they believed they could capitalize on. A lot of the property was repurposed into community gardens, a park, new football field, a pier and fishing area and a few local businesses are open, so it was as successful as a small town with limited funding can get. Parts of Houston & New Orleans are facing this same reality, and the locals aren’t even aware that most of them can afford to purchase a good majority of that derelict property. Yet they continue on a downward spiral. SMDH.

I know from when I was a home health nurse n the hood that not many are out til afternoon/ early evening lol glad u was ok n those areas n that u didn’t go back! Interesting interview! My how things change. When I was a kid way back in the 1940s and 50s the police were the law; now they're a joke. During the 1965s the CPD (Chicago Police Department) until the 1980s tried aggressively to recruit me. Each time I told them no for the simple reason my methods of keeping the peace went out with Wyatt Earp. Nick, I missed my century, damnit!

The new apartment building makes me remember when they took down Cabrini Green in Chitcity.. They replaced the Green with duplexes and a small number had to be used to house some of the prior Cabrini residents. The neighboring businesses and the like were calling the new people moving in “volunteer victims” 😳

Those were townhomes, not apartments. The west side of the Third Ward is near the Museum of Fine Arts and fancier neighborhoods. The new development is pushing east in search of affordable land.
I was born in my Grandmother's home in the 3rd Ward in 1951. The house is still standing and quite gentrified.
But even in my childhood days the 3rd and 4th Wards were rough. Lubbock Elementary, Deady, Milby and Austin High Schools.
I would love to go back and visit and see it. However NOT alone and only with a sidearm on my hip.
Thanks. All the new construction is probably subsidized housing. "Kids with machine guns running around" occurs in Houston as well as other cities. I was with a police ride-along as part of a course in my St. Louis suburb, and we stopped a car with his lights off at night. The Officer found an automatic weapon in the back seat, unloaded. The guy said he carries it in case he has a "beef" with anyone. Later, the policeman told me he was sweating, expecting something to happen.
Most of those new construction are for-sale "townhomes" or "patio homes" which is a very common occurrence within the inner-loop of Houston. These usually begin popping up in gentrifying areas, which has already begun in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th wards of Houston.

Bro Nick Johnson my son is there in Houston Texas for about 10 months working at the plant yeah he said it was pretty ghetto but you know the job was great but he only worked there for about 10 months and then left the people there are very nice people what he said have a great day and be safe❤❤❤
I live in Houston you might want to compare that area to the heights. where you struggle to get a house for 500k , pay 30k in property Taxes a year, and another 10 to 15 k for insurance.
