  • Port Isabel has one of the best beaches in Texas -- and it's not even on the coast! Dive into all the tropical fun you need for a coastal getaway in one of the oldest towns in South Texas.
At the center of the city, this lighthouse shines like a beacon to all those who travel to Port Isabel. And though it’s light stopped glowing in 1905, it’s still one of the best spots to get an incredible view of town.
In the historic general store is a museum with artifacts that prove that this town has been a summer resort destination since the 1800s. Next door at the Treasures of the Gulf museum, you can also wander through exhibits full of treasures from sunken Spanish Ships.
One of the most diverse habitats in Texas, this 98,000 acre wilderness is home to over 400 bird species and rare animals, like the endangered ocelot. Grab your binoculars and start exploring!
Sadly, since filming, Manuel’s has permanently closed after 37 years of business.
Eating seafood on the coast is a must, and there’s no better place than at a fish market like Los Tortugo’s where the seafood dishes are served as fresh as they come. While they will cook whatever you catch, I highly suggest ordering their famous ceviche that’s made with a recipe so secret, that only a chosen few are allowed to make it.
Since the water in the Port Isabel bay is saltier than the ocean, the bayfishing here is world-class. But to truly catch a whopper, you need Captain Curry to show you the sweet spots where you’ll find the biggest fish in the bay.

Unfortunately, Manuel's has closed its doors within the last year or so...😥 It was a great restaurant with amazing food and a wonderful owner & staff. Miss it! 💗

Although I am watching this after some of the details have changed, this is my beloved hometown that I have returned to after many years of living elsewhere. There is no place like home! Thank you for this episode.🙌🏼🥰🖖🏼

Fort Ringgold, located in Rio Grande City, Texas, was occupied by Union or Confederate forces when they fought each other over control of South Texas dating back to 1861. The historic, and now remodeled, home of Robert E. Lee was converted into a museum as well that is located inside Fort Ringgold.
Fort Ringgold has served many purposes after the Civil War era from military barracks to present-day school grounds. It is rich in history and is a must-see location if you're ever in the area!
I was raised in Rio Grande City. I attended Fort Ringgold 5th Grade Campus(1999-2000) and Fort Ringgold Middle School(2000-2003). Back when the Robert E. Lee home was dilapidated and basically sitting in ruin. It was amazing to watch them restore the home and turn it into a beautiful home and museum.

I was just down there for the Starship launch. I found it odd there was no mention of Starbase until I saw this was filmed in 2019.
Joe’s Seafood and Hopper Haus were my favorite places to eat.

I'm enjoying the love for Port Isabel, but bro, Manuel's has been closed for over two years. That said, it's worth checking out the lighthouse. They've re-lit it.

We are planning a trip to Port Isabel later this summer. This video is great timing, Chet. Unfortunately, I did a search and it looks like Manuel's is permanently closed :(

Go to Isabel's for a good Con Todo. I believe Isabel's was the first to serve them, I remember getting them as a kid back in the late 70s

YES there was a bigger lamp than that little watchlight in the light! And even better, it's there again. The Texas Historical Commission funded construction and installation of a 3rd-order Fresnel lens identical to the original, which was illuminuated for the first time in December 2022. Visitors can now see the lamphouse as it was in the late 1800s. (Third-order lenses are roughly five feet tall.)

Hahaha ceviche is so basic to make, 4 ingredient to add to sea food and 2 seasoning... there is no such thing as family recipe. It can only be done one way.
