For anyone who cares to know that doesn't, instead of adding in new circles for each part after the base is made, just highlight the circular edge loop you already have on the base and ctrl D, right click, right click>separate selection. Then you have another separate object the same size and it keeps all the modifiers...if you want them. fyi, I'm not trying to say I know how to model better than Derek at all. He's waaay better than myself but we are all learning good things thanks to people like him!
Thanks for the great video Derek!! Love these!

    • @DerekElliott

Totally good tip and yes keeping the modifiers of the previous object is extremely convenient.

For those who dont know: the "distance" value in the bump node is in meters so if you have it at 1 it's trying to fake lighting as though that section is 1 meter displaced from the object which leads to artifacts between areas of white and black due to the stark transition so just using an appropriate "distance" value for your application should fix most artifacts
or just do what derrk did and play with each slider, it's all fake lighting/displacement anyway just to get to your desired result

Had to learn that the hard way with simulations.
Made a photorealistic angel wing, 500 feathers. Each feather has two hair system along left and right edge that react to forces.
The feather "spine" is a hard soft body that also bends due to inertia and wind.
Spent a week baking different physics settings for the 1000+ feathers (2 wings) until I realized that I forgot to APPLY SCALE to the proto-feather I used to create them all.
At this point, I had already keyframed a 360 frame animation, had a complex armature with bones for all the main feathers, complex parenting and realized that I won't be able apply scale of all of them by hand anymore.
Lesson learned: APPLY SCALE whenever possible. Just do it. Don't even question it, it can cause so much despair...
Physics simulations, materials, they all HATE scaled objects. What a painful lesson this was.

    Hey Derek, great tutorial!
May I ask you how you approach cycles renders for clients if the animation is a bit longer? >10 sec by example.
Do you render on your own machine, do you have a dedicated render machine or do you use render farms and factor in their price into what you charge the customer?
