    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 3 года назад +72

      When i started using Blender, i had 128MB RAM. It was nearly 20 years ago. I found the PC in the dumpster under my apartment, it was a very new AMD Athlon 800 with a not terrible i think MSI mainboard. The power supply was cheap junk and smelled burned. The PC also housed an optical drive (dead), an GPU (dead), and a hard disk (dead), so this was the handiwork of the power supply; however the mainboard, the CPU, and RAM were alright. So i just had to replace the dead bits, i had an Elsa TNT2 i think at hand, and a Fortron/Source power supply, an older CD burner, i added a DVD drive, and a brand spanking new Maxtor DM80 hard disk with lifetime warranty (that i had to later make use of SEVERAL TIMES by mailing it in to Ireland), and IT WAS GLORIOUS.

    • @cesaramaral7007
      @cesaramaral7007 3 года назад +12

      @@SianaGearz thanks for sharing the story. That was really awesome. I take it you still have that hard disk? That'd be some piece to keep, wonder if the warranty holds still.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 3 года назад +9

      @@cesaramaral7007 No, they cancelled the warranty eventually. Also Maxtor no longer exists as a legal entity. I have SOME DM80 hard disks here in a box somewhere, but i don't know whether either of them is THE hard disk that last came back from replacement of THAT hard disk, because i took custody of a number of dead DM80 disks since then that i also got replaced, which BTW wasn't free, they would repair and mail them back for free, but you pay the shipping to them, which was expensive. I think the DM80 were dying like flies for some reason.
      I think the TNT2 didn't stay in that PC for all that long, because naturally the GeForce 2mx was a better match for Blender. Because thanks to OpenGL, transformation and lighting viewport acceleration would just work.

    41:15 Note that in later version of Blender Knife Project tool works differently: To use Knife Project, first in Object Mode select the objects to be cut, then switch to Edit Mode and select the cutting objects in the Outliner (Ctrl-LMB), and finally choose Mesh ‣ Knife Project.

    Watching this makes me realize there are so many things I've been doing manually that Blender can just do with a keystroke or a few clicks. Most helpful new stuff:
    - Select all by trait | non manifold to speed up fixing holes in meshes.
    - Ctrl-F menu to do boolean operations within the same mesh.
    - P, "by loose parts"

    49:59 Moving along another element's normals is balm for the hard-surface/precision modeling soul. Too bad the quick unselected-but-active trick you show at doesn't work anymore, but you can instead *create a custom orientation:*
    Select the "reference face". Open the _Transform Orientations_ dropdown (next to pivot point, usually says "Global") and click the _+_ button _(Create Orientation)._ Then you can select whatever and move it along this orientation.
    You can even create multiple custom orientations, and give each one a name to stay organized. And it works across objects, so you can move other objects/elements in perfect alignment to an unselected face in a completely different mesh.

    • @TheCobyRandal
      @TheCobyRandal 3 года назад +3

      I was about to ask about this because I could not get unselected faces to stay active. Did they patch it as a bug? I wish they would have kept it as an option because it is SO FAST! *Edit* I just tested and this unselected but active trick worked in 2.79b all the way up to 2.82a. Why in the world is it gone now???

    • @nibblrrr7124
      @nibblrrr7124 3 года назад +2

      @@TheCobyRandal Interesting, thanks for tracing it through the versions! I heard it was regarded as a bug and removed. I didn't know about this behavior and never had the chance to get used to it - but I guess consistency of the UI is important. Maybe allowing active-but-unselected elements lead to behavior elsewhere that is even less expected?
      I guess you could try to hunt down the patch, or make a proposal thread on RightClickSelect to discuss bringing it back.

    Great video, there are so many good tips in this one :D
    But it seams like the tip at 51:00 where you select a second face and deselect it, and pivot-point stays where is were, when deselecting it, doesn't work anymore in Blender 2.92.0 ?
    Or is it just me, having a problem getting that trick to work? When I deselect the the last selected face, the pivot-point (and the directions it points) jumps back to the previous selected face.
    This in not a big problem, I can work around it, but is seems like a nice trick, that could be useful.
    And the "Apply all modifiers" at 1:08:44 does also not seem to work anymore :(
    Under "Convert to", I don't have the option "Mesh from Curve/Meta/Surf/Text", instead I have one there just is called "Mesh", and when I choose this option, it just converts to mesh, without adding the modifiers.

    Wow! Awesome job. A plethora of information. I suggest to use this as a reference. Watching it in one shot is like a brain overloading info dump. Wish it was available back when I was learning instancing as it would have saved me tons of time and headaches. Also liked the altering of modifiers for multiple objects instead of only the active. And the stacking using subdivision/weld/boolean. The surface projection using Shrinkwrap was excellent, and the Sticky Note tutorial has sooo many applications (loved the quick and dirty weight painting as it gave so much knowledge in a flash!) . Really enjoyed this. Thank you very much Zach! Keep inspiring and creating!
