There’s always one person who comes off as arrogant in these videos, but there was not one bad apple in this group. This was the most productive discussion I’ve seen in a long time.
This is how all debates should go - not really arguing with each other just expressing your beliefs and respecting those who think different... unfortunately most of the time that is not the case though 😕😕

@@lTheBlackGuyl Not actually. Science is based on continual re-evaluation of the claims as supported by the evidence. When a claim can't be shown to comport to the evidence, then the claim is dismissed. When multiple lines of empirical evidence converge, in inferential-space, upon a singular conclusion and no lines of evidence refute the conclusion -- then that suffices as proof. It's a justified true belief - or knowledge. In science, researchers continually try to disprove and refute and challenge what we currently think. Nope - not opinions at all.

It was so interesting that at the statement, "It is important to question one's own beliefs," everyone came to the table. That shows how mature these people are...it's an important quality for any person to have the humility to question their beliefs if something contradicts them.
@@schmetterling4477The bible has been translated several times in the past hundreds of years. There is bound to be some, if not a lot of mistranslations there which changes the meaning of certain parts. We can definitely question it.
whilst I agree that everyone in this video were all very mature, i don't think that coming to the table for that particular prompt is a signifier of that maturity. Take the flat earthers in the 'flat earthers vs scientists' video. I can picture every single one of them stepping forward to that prompt because they are all self proclaimed 'free thinkers' and their whole identities revolve around questioning what they've been taught. But none of them would listen to reason, they would all interrupt the scientists as they tried to explain themselves, and overall they were very immature. But I am 99% sure they they would all claim that they 'question their own beliefs'
In general, Buddhism is more a way of life than a religion. The main branches are Theravada, Mahayana and Tibetan Buddhism. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t believe in a deity or god. Buddha was not a god, he was a man who achieved enlightenment by discovering the Middle Way/Middle Path. Basically living both a life of excess/wealth/luxury and a life of extreme poverty and realising that balance was better than excess. Buddhists believe in reincarnation, how you act in life depends on who/what you’ll reincarnate as, and that one can break from the chain of reincarnation (Enlightenment) through meditation, living a good life, etc. AKA = they chill af
I'm not a Christian but I really like how calm and understanding the pastor is. Loved to see how the flat earthers didn't even want to hear the scientist's thoughts but how the pastor was quite understanding of others' opinions.

Because in the end, no one can claim any of their beliefs with 100% certainty. Everyone in this video walked a road to get to where they are now, and each road was completely different. Meaning that each person here understands that they can't think less of each other for not having the same beliefs, but can only explain how they came to their own beliefs. We should all be more respectful of each other, because that's the only time problems start to arise. When we start to infringe on the rights of others beliefs.
@You need magnesium. that what great about them even as an atheist, I can see them as being someone I can have a nice conversation about anything. I believe that there are religious people who try to mold themselves to their religion and limit the thing that they can enjoy like porn or other thing similar.
The pastor reflects a Christ like character, he listened, he answered, he looked and tried to understand. Never saw him angry. If we only respect each others beliefs and not judging with a "you're wrong and I'm right"
I see what you're saying, but a true Christian would still preach the true gospel message, because that is what we are commanded to do. Christ talked with everybody but still preached repentance and turning from sin. It's not about judging so much because Christians believe that God has already judged us for our sin through the 10 Commandments. Our job is to tell the world about the coming judgment, and the way to be saved from that - repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Most people don't want to hear that they're sinners who need a Savior.
@@mattkladnik6965 that's awesome to hear! Thanks for being such a great representative of the religious community, and articulating such a position of faith so well and graciously. You truly reflected a lot of what other people of faith believe in so emphatically! God bless you Brother.

I have discussed with Muslims, various types of Christians and Hindus but never met a Buddhist or a Jew but I look forward to discussing with them one day and any other religion really. I mean those guys are so afraid that they are wrong they jump on the throat of anyone who claims otherwise. Furthermore their answer to everything was always some variation of 'because God' that was a real conversation killer. Conversely when I discussed with the Muslims they argued on both a philosophical and logical level that blew my mind. I ended up reading the Quran and found that a lot of what is believed is actually quite wrong. Islam actually preaches tolerance all this infidels talk was no where to be found ....so fancy that

It's poetic and beautiful, but it's not an accurate metaphor to describe "us", the consciousness. It would be more like waves without an ocean. Waves that simply disappear rather than retreat back to the ocean. It however does describe life from biological perspective, just another way to say from ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Which is not really beautiful anymore, but rather depressing.

O people, know by us we are actually one descendant, namely the descendants of the prophet adam as and siti hawa, the differences that exist today are because our mindset is not the same, there are those whose minds are intelligent, smart, mature and some are late thinking. and there are those who do not use their brains at all to think and do not want to think, thus giving rise to various ethnic groups, nationalities, languages, cultures, traditions, ethnicities, slogans, dances, and diverse religions. all that Allah created so that we can get to know each other, be able to respect each other, be able to realize each other, that life in the world is certainly lacking and there are advantages of each. and so that we want to learn and learn the weaknesses and strengths of ourselves, our tribe in our language, all of them have been outlined in this life. this life has been arranged so that everything is balanced. because what we believe is if in the world the minds of all humans are the same, you can imagine yourself, ribeuutt explain ... hahaha so that's why the human mind is not the same. There are intelligent and intelligent people, some are only using their reasoning just to deceive other human beings into fulfilling their own interests. then what are our similarities as humans? humans actually have the same conscience, feeling and feeling. and the purpose of our lives is the same. every human being in this world has the same purpose in life, which is to live happily and want to live safely. happiness and safety in life are our main goals as humans. who are humans who don't want to live happily and live in a safe place? because in a safe place that we can comfortably live this life. in a safe and comfortable place that will create prosperity and prosperity to make this life peaceful. our enemies are the same, that is, what is in us, selfishness and lust. fighting the enemy that looks is easy. the difficult thing is to fight ourselves. admit that our selves are weak and there are many shortcomings in us. we always boast about things that really aren't ours. are we proud of the assets we have, the position we are using, just for what? for the sake of ourselves. we forget outside ourselves there are still many who lack.

A curious mind (the Scientist), that is nurtured with a loving heart (the Pastor & Rabbi), but is also rooted in a balanced perspective (Buddhist) is probably what I took away the most from this discourse.
This dialogue was missing a Muslim. The question of things that can't be explained by one's belief applies to all the 3 religious guests, but it doesn't apply to Islam. Islamic view explains everything, encourages people to search and experience the universe in every aspect of it, and the Quran actually emphasizes that the more one learns and searches, the more one believes, and this happens only in Islam. If you would like more information, you can search the multitude of Islamic literature. I would highly recommend iERA, Sapience Institute and Blogging Theology.

It’s sad that this is surprising to people. Christians who are very close in their relationship with God are almost always like this. This was not a discussion between religious leaders and scientists, this was a discussion between 6 wise and intelligent humans with different beliefs.
"It's important to question one's own beliefs" and all six of them agree. I've got a feeling that might be the reason why their conversation went so civil.
Judaic beliefs get really varied! Most Jewish believers have a very vague idea of an afterlife, the concept is alluded to in our texts but not very concretely. Many reconstructionist (a more modern version) jews don't believe in an explicit afterlife. Also, she doesn't believe the earth was created, but so do many Jews, and even Christians. Many interpretations of Genesis would argue that the whole "creation" section of that book was not literal at all, but a metaphor of sorts.
cheesesmiles well it might seem like its a mature discussion but opposite sides clearly have tunnel vision and tune them out and don’t actually listen. @cheesesmiles It's possible Sam has seen some of Vice's attempts at having a discussion involving people with different view points. That still left a bad taste in my mouth. Given that experience this was refreshing.

When they were asked the question if there are things their beliefs cannot explain I do not understand why not one of the scientists moved? Surely there are things that they believe in that they cannot fully explain? What about gravity, since when do we know why gravity works? The opposit for me A lot of people say dying is the best experience they ever had (like people who almost died) But death is so...unknown. Im scared of not knowing what happens
I used to be afraid of both. But now it just makes me sad. I'm not afraid of it, just sad that I won't get to experience what humans as a species are able to create and figure out about our earth and the universe. That's always been my fascination. When I look up at all the stars I realize how small and insignificant our lives all are. We live and then we don't, but we are all here experiencing the same things together, and I think that's comforting in away. At the same time, I want to live forever because I want to know everything, and the fact of the matter is I will never know everything. But the death process itself is like 0.0000001% of our life. I do participate in Buddhism events regarding my passed relatives & ancestors, enjoy Christmas, sometimes go to various Buddhism & Shintoism temples during my walk and pray, all as a cultural custom or a seasonal event and not so much as a believer, which is also a very common thing in Japan, even though it may sound weird. Also, experiencing half my life in Protestant school and kindergarten I think I have positive influence from it, as well as Buddhism influence from living in Japan. So for me, I guess I’m made by pieces that I like out of each philosophy even though I don’t identify as part of a specific religion.

When they were asked the question if there are things their beliefs cannot explain I do not understand why not one of the scientists moved? Surely there are things that they believe in that they cannot fully explain? What about gravity, since when do we know why gravity works? When we observe a photon it will behave differently to when it is not being observed by a person, but from what I know we also do not know why this occurs. Do these examples fit this question or am I just having a slow day lol.
@@Faxy95 well, science is not a set standard when it comes to laws and principles, it is dynamic and ever expanding. So they probably do believe that science can explain everything, but just not right now. But eventually we will get an explanation for everything through the scientific process.
Also there are many theories present for the 2 scenarios you gave. Theories are equally valuable and sometomes accepted in science as laws. Despite not yet being proven.

A lot of people say dying is the best experience they ever had (like people who almost died)
But death is so...unknown.

Something like that. So I don't fear it.
