No holds barred in this one!! :D Do you think it's still worth buying despite the negatives? That "non-replaceable" lens protector kinda scares me... 😟
Thanks for another awesome, honest and straightforward review. You are my go to for assistance on purchase decision making. Helping me save my hard earned money for years. Yes, that lens crossed the line and closed the book on the GoPro 8 purchase decision.
@@trippivlogs8465 You are absolutely right. I am going to buy 8 and I don't afraid to use it for my vlogs. Gopro 8 one of the best action cameras on the market now.
I've been using the GoPro hero 8 for a good while now, and can say that if you're looking between it and the 7, the image quality and stability is vastly superior, and it remains absolutely worth it for the most rugged activity.
This is the review we actually want, user perspective cons focusing. That is how it is supposed to be. Rather than speaking Spec sheet in review and showing awesome footage. Remembered your name, will come back again.
Was seriously considering buying one, but stopped watching after learning the lens is not replaceable. And what a crummy response from go pro on the issue. Not for me.
To be honest, its not a deal breaker for me... I've owned more than 20 GoPros in my life, and I never once Scratched the Screen.. Luck maybe, and I use them for lots of action shoots. I think GoPro made a business call because hey saw that there probably were more issues arising from a detachable lens (water leaks) than if they made it solid. I bet like me, the vast majority of GoPro users don't end up scratching their screens. Perhaps when GoPro designs the Hero 9, they can offer 2 versions: a PRO Version and a Consumer version. The PRO version should have the Detachable Screen... and maybe even a Better SENSOR with good quality 4K?
The few benefits that I see of no replaceable front lens is: You won't get any condensation in the lens anymore, really handy for in and out of water environments. It won't get sand or get jammed thus rendering it impossible to take it off anyhow. Still doesn't justify it imo
What initially sold me on the 8 was the stabilization. I have Parkinson's, so I'm never really sure when my tremor will be significant (time to pop a pill!) or slight. It's still in the box. I'd be using it for vlogging, travel, and some outdoor stuff - hiking, easy kayaking, x-c skiing. But now I'm considering returning it, and getting the 7. The lens cover issue has me uneasy. Thank you for your review, I've seen others that didn't mention the lens cover issue.

Kinda confirms my developing GoPro thesis: every other major release represents enough improvement to consider spending, but year over year they really don't justify replacing or adding to your quiver. Improvements are just too incremental, and they've even made a few things worse from the looks of it. I may trade up my Hero3 Black for another Hero7 Black, and hold off on until the 9 is out to see if that offers anything revolutionary.
I've only been researching this for like 10 mins now +the 6mins I've gotten into your video, Ben, but here's some thoughts: 1. the Hypersmooth feature is available at 4k60 now with a patch they released (correct me if I'm wrong) 2. the tempered glass would crack under high impact but that + the super-strong glass on this thing would almost certainly be fine for 99% of things. Easier to replace a tempered glass sticker than a lens so in some ways this is a huge upgrade.
Non replacing lens (1), an open door (2) showing the battery when using the camera connected to a charger or powerbank, and no frame protection (3), is a huge deal-breaker for me! Going to stick with the cheaper GoPro Hero 7 Black! Just imagine you being in a mountain and the lens crack! Not being able to replace lens whatsoever means, the mountain filming you were eager to do, is no more!... I don't know if they changed the Product Owner for the GoPro Hero product or not, but these awkward changes are a shoot in the foot and a huge setback for a supposedly new upgraded model. GoPro Hero 7 Black was (is) such a perfect product! So basically now we have: 1. GoPro Hero 7 Black 2. Osmo Action Camera 3. GoPro Hero 8 Black?

Still rocking a Hero3 Black and it's time to upgrade. The stabilization is a major upgrade. This video helped me pick the 7 Black over the 8 Black, thanks! Not nearly enough benefits to the 8 to justify the drawbacks. Flimsy legs and non replaceable lens? No thanks.

My Hero 3 died years ago. Just kept it around in a box. I'm sure glad I did! My new Hero 8 is arriving today with the GoPro Trade Up program. Saved $100 and got rid of my boat anchor.
I have two hero 7 blacks, love them. I bought two hero 8's and so far I'm not impressed. The lens for hero 8 can be replaced. Ya need a heat gun and a pry tool. Not wanting to do that I bought two Ulanzi G8-5 Vlog Metal Cages for GoPro Hero 8. The cage has a 52mm threaded filter adapter. I put UV filters on each cage adapter, this will protect the camera's lens. It also comes with a shoe mount that can be attached on top. On the bottom, it provides space for a mic adapter. Finally one the the hero 8's keeps crashing and freezing. That behavior stopped when I put a hero 7 battery into that hero 8. Go figure.
Bought the GoPro 8, used once - battery life reduced down to 19%, put back on charge. Never came back on... wouldn't recommend wasting £400 on an action camera that's out of action!!........... thanks for the review though!!
Ulanzi just came out with the Hero8 aftermarket upgrades... battery door replacement with charge cable access, and an aluminum case that fits all 52mm filters. They just shipped mine this morning. Can't wait.
Great video, I have the 8 and not really understanding the whole lens issue. Just put a screen protector or a case and you’ll be fine. Set back from the 7 though since it had replacement lens.
finally someone who give a proper review! the not replaceable lens is a joke but the most turning down part for me the the audio adapter and the opening door to reach the audio plug very not good
I’ve had the 5 for years never had to replace lens and mostly film mountain biking and under water clips. Upgrading to the hero 8, gadget insurance I have anyway will cover camera at no extra cost and have the screen protectors. Not a game changer for me. But each to their own
SD card is a piece of cake to remove if you remove the battery and I wasn't even aware the door clipped off. Mine is solid so not sure why yours is so loose. Odd. I'm really impressed with hypersmooth even without boost its sweet IMO. Updating the GoPro and linking it to my android was an utter ballache!! Good honest review.
I love the GoPro hero 8 when it works. It shuts off and turns back on when it once to. I like to record me racing and when the motors are on and idling you can’t hear the beeps. But when it works it’s amazing
I was informed a couple of days ago, that I am going to be getting one of these from a friend. I am kind of nervous because I have never worked with a GoPro before. Say for flying somebody else's drone which was equipped with a GoPro, but I didn't do much with the GoPro, and was mainly using the drone. He operated the controls on the GoPro.
Oh, wow. You hit some really concerning points on this thing! I was pretty hyped on it but it seems like they may be doing some things to get more revenue. Also, I need that dope scooter, haha. That was so awesome.
4:40 - pro tip: if you remove the battery it gets really easy to remove the SD card. This probably avoid people removing their SD card with the camera on.
Thanks for your honest review mate! And yes, The "non-replaceable" lens cover is a deal-breaker for me. And I do not want to put a tempered lens and screen protector on either, as it will slightly distort the "True Picture". I'll stay with my GoPro Hero 7 Black and wait for the new GoPro 9 to come out... hopefully with all those terrible "Problems" fixed that are on the GoPro 8! Cheers, Mark
Great and may I say objective review. Big fan of the GoPro. I still have and use my 3+ and after your review, will upgrade. From your review I am impressed by the quality of picture that the 8 delivers compared to the 3+, which is really what the lens should do. Indeed, damaging the lens is a risk but you can mitigate against doing so. I only dive with the GoPro and it is always in a housing regardless of whether or not it is in or out of the water. I've never scratched or damaged the lens of either the housing or the lens itself. Thanks a bunch.
So happy I went with the 7 instead of being fooled into buying the newest model. Learned from past mistakes with iPhones. With these companies, the newest model is hardly the best
It seems to me that either gopro never learn or more likely they just don’t care. The sound quality and that wobbly folding mount are the deal breakers for me. I have been waiting for them to take notice of us motorcycle riders who just want some reasonable sound without a myriad of add on’s I’ll stick with my old 5 black and see if down the track they rectify these problems. Thanks for the heads up mate.
Haha, it not wobbly at all....I agree the permanent lense cover is a pain, but considering I only paid 300 for it if I am going that crazy rough with it I'll probably damage something else.
I had just got the 7 when the 8 announced. I returned the 7 and can't wait for the mic kit coming. I use mine for motorcycle rides. The added features of the 8 and the fact that I hated the 7 case. I always felt like I was about to break it.

This Is really helpful , thank for the details ❤
I love the GoPro hero 8 when it works. It shuts off and turns back on when it once to. I like to record me racing and when the motors are on and idling you can’t hear the beeps. But when it works it’s amazing
Very helpful.
I'm looking at buying my first Go Pro. I think I may go for the 7 based on this review
Me too
Best unbiased review. Thanks to your review I won’t be buying it as the non-replaceable front lens is an absolute show stopper.
Glad the video helped
Thank you soooo much for this vid, it really made me rethink this purchase
I was informed a couple of days ago, that I am going to be getting one of these from a friend. I am kind of nervous because I have never worked with a GoPro before. Say for flying somebody else's drone which was equipped with a GoPro, but I didn't do much with the GoPro, and was mainly using the drone. He operated the controls on the GoPro.
Oh, wow. You hit some really concerning points on this thing! I was pretty hyped on it but it seems like they may be doing some things to get more revenue.
Also, I need that dope scooter, haha. That was so awesome.
Thanks Brandon! Yea definitely a hard pass for some people. Come visit AL for some fun scooter rides :)
4:40 - pro tip: if you remove the battery it gets really easy to remove the SD card. This probably avoid people removing their SD card with the camera on.
as always an excelent and honest review ben! regards :)
Thank you Matias
Top review presentation. Your delivery is seamless and there is no nonsense waffle of pointless words at all. Well done
Fantastic review 👍 I’m gonna wait out for Christmas sales to get the cheaper Hero 7
I think GoPro gave their game to DJI action cams for sure....I know I'm thinking HARD of ditching gopro for DJI
Cheers!
Thanks a bunch.
whens the hero 9 coming out ...with replaceable lens I bet..
Haha that'd be nice
I doubt it. Eventually they’ll all be not replaceable
Excellent review
Thank you so much I was looking for an honest review not those fake ones who are paid by GoPro.... great review!
Thanks!
So happy I went with the 7 instead of being fooled into buying the newest model. Learned from past mistakes with iPhones. With these companies, the newest model is hardly the best
I was sold until I saw this review, won't be putting one of these on an fpv qaud :S
getting mine.. bought it with trade up over gopro web, sold my hero 5 and buying this hero 8 with 150euro! can't wait
THIS GUY LIVES IN HEAVEN...
He should have way more subscribers...bigger channels don’t do as good of a job as he does. Great video
This is what I call perfect review. Thank you for the detailed information.
Thanks so much
Ordered mine yesterday. Really looking forward to getting it in the mail!
SUAV Enterprises how is it mate? Looking at getting my first go pro...
100% agree
Haha, it not wobbly at all....I agree the permanent lense cover is a pain, but considering I only paid 300 for it if I am going that crazy rough with it I'll probably damage something else.
I had just got the 7 when the 8 announced. I returned the 7 and can't wait for the mic kit coming. I use mine for motorcycle rides. The added features of the 8 and the fact that I hated the 7 case. I always felt like I was about to break it.
Travis Dunn would you say that the case used for the 7 would be bad for motorcycle rides because that what I would like to use one for
All these in camera improvements could be done on the GoPro 7 with a firmware update! Big thumbs down on this one gopro.
I purchased gopro hero 8 and the footages are so cool, just configure the right settings and you're good to go!!!
things customers also bought with this item:
electric scooter ;)
✌😎
Thanks man, that mount flap thing seems crazy, I motovlog and definitely ruled out the GoPro 8 now with your honest review, thank you.
the non-replaceable lens would be a major deal-breaker. I am going to go woth the Hero 7 Black. Thanks for the help deciding!
Glad to help
