Was about to buy the 8 for motorvlogging on my harley. Decided to go for the 7 instead aswell. Replaceble lenses, sturdier attechments meaning no fear of losing it and that damn door on the 8 exposing the battery etc.. Just a no go.
I have the 7 and I love it. Even though the lens is “toughened” on the 8, it worries me if it could break. And the best way to protect it is getting insurance for an *ACTION* camera, no thanks GoPro.
I went from the Hero 4 to the 7 Black. I was blown away with the performance. I want a second one and was waiting for the 8 to come out. The non removable lens cover and the need for different batteries settled it for me. I'll save myself $80 and buy another 7.
Are you having bug issues with your 7? Mine is extremely buggy and it terrible. I have done just about everything to fix other than throwing it away. Been looking into Mevo
Nick Mendez your not alone, my touch screen/sensitivity is complete ass compared to my hero 4 silver. I think there are a few out there like ours that may be suffering from this problem. Other then that inconvenience the camera is great not the less
Nick Mendez yes mine turns on its own, battery drains while not on and out of the gopro, stabilization sometimes works sometimes doesnt, battery dies after 21 minutes of use in 1080 60fps
Just bought a hero 7 after using a Yi 4k. Here is my feedback after using it for a week. My i7 processor still doesn't edit 4k footage without the frame drops and I don't have enough memory to create proxies. At 2.7k Linear Hypersmooth, the hero 7 seems literally the same as the 8 in terms of the final quality one would see when uploading at 1080p on RUclips. Advantages for me over my previous cam: - Stabilization is WOW! - Better colours - Overall quality is so much better - Love how sharp the footage is - Mic is decent. The auto mode filters wind very well but obviously not to crazy levels. Drawbacks: - Worst battery life ever. Lasts me 45mins on one full charge. So you need to buy extra ones without a doubt. - Additional equipments have to be purchased as go pro doesn't provide the screw in setup in the box. - Only a go pro adapter (£50) works if you were to buy an external mic. Overall I love the cam but have spent an extra £100 takes my cost to £350 for it for which I could have easily purchased the 9 (had I known). So anyone thinking to buy a 7 or an 8 should consider 9 but the big butt, please check it's mic quality. Hope this helps someone ;)
You make a good point. Just returned home from a trip to Jamaica. Took the 7 and 8 with me. Only reason I didn’t take the 6 is I didn’t feel like taking the gimbal. I used the 8 for the vlogging/speaking part of the trip and the 7 for all the action parts (where I’ll kill the native audio and use a soundtrack in post). I also found the 8 much better in low light evening settings. Not saying the 8 isn’t a good action cam - just that I never use it in action settings; but only when vlogging from the truck or a set location. Keep up the great reviews!
I should have watched this before buying. I ordered the 8 before watching the video and my main intent was to use it while fishing. Your logic on why the 7 would be better is right on and has me rethinking my decision. I'm attempting to cancel the order for the 8 if I succeed I'll get the 7.
After seeing both in store and pretty much same level kit, the replacement lense of the hero 7 black had the advantage to me, so brought one, and I must say I'm very happy, and with the spare money I got some stuff for it
I totally agree! That's what sold me on the 7 versus the 8. I have a silver 4 that is about to be retired to dash cam use and secondary shot on bike trips. They totally lost the mark on that one.
@@twowheeledsmurph glad I'm not only one, yep GoPro seem to have lost there trail a lil bit and messed this one up on design not inner features. Shame or I would of got the 8 But I must say I'm very happy with the 7black
Yep. Was going to upgrade to an 8 from a pair of old Sessions but I think I’ll upgrade to the 7 instead. For a quite a few reasons actually. I already have the Max 360.
WOW..... Tough Comparison !!! I am So far down the food chain, and behind the 8 Ball ... I'm still using my 1st and only GoPro ... wait for it ....... The Hero 3 ....
Good, clear video. Liked and Subbed! Personally the image quality of the 7 looks cleaner (sharper) and the colors look like lifelike whereas the 8 has a warm, brownish look to it.
GoPro 8 'features' Flippy feet = $20 replacement (no joke GoPro responded to a tweet where I asked about this) Lens = not changeable (Apple mentality of Macrotransactions) Less things in the box but the cost is the same/more No front view screen on the camera that IS NOT an extra cost (Osmo Action has this) No built in 1/4 mount (This should have been in place the flippy feet) No lens protective screens, this should have been in the box since the lens is not changeable.
Many thanks for this, no HDMI out for me is a big thing as I record in realtime with multiple cams, gopros are nice because they are small, and have that HDMI out, not on the 8 means no buy for me.
Thanks for the video, I use 7black for Sparring and training (action) sports and wanted the 8black due to Better STABILITY. BUT you brought up GREAT points on durability, replacement lens which deferred my upgrade. For that THANK YOU.
I completely agree with you. GoPro really shot themselves in the foot with the non-removable lens on the Hero 8. I do think you should have specifically mentioned though that the built in mounts on the Hero 8 are replaceable by removing a couple screws. Also would have been good to mention how these mounts tend to wobble a lot more than the hero 7 case.
I think GoPro changed the lens to push there PLUS subscription. Becuase if you follow there earnings. They aren't profitable thru camera sells but rather thru the subscriptions. Also, I dont get the hype over 4k 60fps. Personally 2.7k is my sweet spot. Great video quality with more options.
I’m having a hard time deciding if the eight is worth it, thank you for the breakdown. The seven is having some flash sales where I live now, so it may be time for an upgrade from the five!
I love my 7 Black, especially when paired with Davinci Resolve, which is just so good. Now that the 7 is on sale for $229, I'm looking to get a 2nd. I love running front and rear on my motorcycles and mountain bikes. I use sound from rear camera for entire audio. No wind and amazing exhaust sounds. Did this for years with gopro 2 and 3, with 2 having way better audio, so always in rear. I use it with my 7 for audio, but not video. Feet on bottom is where I also had issues. Buy a ram mount ball for GoPro and nothing you can't mount it to positively securely Wish a firmware would let me save presets, that looks to be biggest improvement, since image after post processing is jaw dropping in 7.
I just bought the 7 today with suction cup mount for my car, looking foward to capturing some driving but at the same time feels like I’m just saving evidence for the cops lol
For me the biggest concern would be the camera lens. However what do you think of putting the lens protector from Gopro on the Hero 8 to protect the glass? I really think the stabilization on the 8 is better but I am worried about the lens and not being able to repair it. Would the protection help?
Reason I'm going for the 8 is how much better the sound is. If I want to have a single solution for recording video that's easy to take with me, the built-in sound needs to be good and the 7 just sounds hollow and boomy, with not a lot of transparency. The 8 is still 'just a gopro' but it's SO much nicer. Easy choice for me.
Subscribed, china chinese here, just bought a GoPro 7 after watching your (other) videos. They are very informative meanwhile entertaining. Thank you for the works and wish you have 10m sub soon.
From what I understand to look at my Hero 8 that mount seams to be from aluminum painted in Black. So will last longer then plastic mount. So I got some aluminum case and tripod mounts on the way to get more protective 😉 .
Great video....I thought you'd also mention the battery door cover issue. If you power your GoPro externally, you can expose the USB port on the 7 by removing the small cover. The Hero8 has a single door that you have to remove thus exposing the battery and other innards that remain covered on the Hero7. Of course you can spend money to fix that issue with a third party Ulanzi G8-7 door if you want to.
Really good review! I just replaced my lens cover on my 7 again. I absolutely will not get the 8 due to the lens cover replacement issue. At this point, I don't care about the 2% of better image/video quality. They better fix it on the 9. Thanks for the info.
Great review I ride a bike and I'm not comfortable with the new lens. Shame on go pro it's there way to sell insurance. Good luck sending it for repairs etc
I have the 7 and love the stability , mostly on and off road motorbikes. I only ever use 1080 so not worried about 4k . I'm really thinking about getting another 7 .
The video clarity and stabilization appear to be superior in Hero 8 vs. Hero 7. If the only concern is durability - then the Supersuit seems a small additional investment. My only issue is my Re-Fuel - 9 Hour ActionPack Extended Battery - will not work with the Hero 8.
The 7 has a better video quality but the 8 has better audio I think that the 7 is more bang for your buck I own a 7 black and I love it it is just perfect for what I need which is motorbike riding jogs night time hikes etc the replace able lense was big for me
I recently bought hero 8, but i wish i had bought a hero 7.. reasons being.. the compatibility of accessories and the cost involved to buy them.. the hero 7 accessories are a lot cheaper as compared to hero 8.. i bought hero 8 for 299$ + shipping.. but now its costing me more than 450$ with basic accessories like a case, a chesty, a tripod. Now i want to buy even more accessories like polar pro filters.. and they are quite expensive because of the non removable lens cover.. so it would say go for hero 7 base because the footage will somewhat similar but u’ll end up saving 150-200$ after buying basic accessories.
The stabilization is not the same. Go check out some comparison videos. hero 8 is night and day better for harsh vibrations or off road use. its not even close. The 8 is mind blowing stable while the 7 just kinda works some to reduce. For that reason alone the 8 is worth the 50 more.
New to the channel. I’m in the market for a GoPro. I was undecided on whether to purchase the 7 or 8 black. By far the best review I’ve seen of both cameras. Thinking old school 7 may be the better choice of the two...especially after your thorough review! Thanks!
One of the most desired Sony cameras with the highest resale value is the RX100 models. It proves that a 1" sensor is really popular, even though you can get the same features in a smaller sensor camera like the Sony HX99. This leads me to thinking that GoPro should come out with a new series of cameras ...the Super Hero ... with a 1" sensor. It would be a larger camera, but still very usable as is the size of the Sony RX10-II (which is killed by lack of auto-focus).
I have the first GoPro, I went scuba diving and saw a huge pufferfish, bigger than a football . The thing didn’t even capture it even though it was right next to us
I agree with you, I would rather get the Hero7 Black. It has the same internal as the 8. It really should perform as well as the 8 if GoPro would just update the firmware on the 7, you would think, but GoPro would rather you move up to the 8 and spend more $$$
Iv'e been going back and forth on desicion but I think I will go with the 7. Like everyone else the lens issue is my big concern gopro really messed up on that one, if the actual design had stayed the same and you could replace lense etc I would have got the 8 but I don't like that you have to buy so much extra stuff when it already costs so much and I can pick up a way cheaper. Although I really wanted that new time warp time lapse stuff eh still not worth the risk of me breaking it I will just play with some editing software.
Which one reproduces the more accurate color? On the Hero 7, your sweatshirt has a more bluish cast compared to the color from the Hero 8, in which the grey color appears more neutral.
I just picked up a Hero 7 over the 8 and 9 today. The smaller size, better price, the removable lens, hdmi port and the better battery life recording 4k@30 is much better than 8 was enough for me. The 9 apparently has a lot of software and ui issues which is a huge problem and 6 months later the updates are still buggy.
Thank you for this great video. I enjoy following your videos related to DSLR and Mirrorless camera. I am just getting into video and wanted to pickup a GoPro before by next vacation in a few weeks;; therefore, I was debating between the GoPro Black 8 vs GoPro Black 7. So, this review was perfect for me. I ended up getting the GoPro Black 7 on Amazon Renewed for a fantastic price! So far, I am loving it. You also give such great informative tips. On of my favorite RUclips Channels to follow.
Thank you EveryDay Dad. Really loved this video as you explained everything so perfectly. Especially the risk of the camera lens. I believe GoPro Hero 7 is the one for me. Cheers! :)
The non replaceable lens is a *_huge_* problem as is the audio. The audio assumes people will be pointing the camera at themselves, when 'exploring' and a lot of other types of videos are made with narration from behind the camera -- and the slighted breeze destroys the sound. Still no realistic way to use a dead cat without an external mic. and mounts. The 'media mod' does not look like it fixes the situation. I really like the inclusion of linear mode in time warp and time lapse. My hope is that third party 'mods' will be available for audio soon...
Been using a Hero 3 for the past couple of months and didn't realize how far they've come until I started researching the 7 and 8 models. WOW, even straight out of the box the difference between a hero 3 and hero 7 is massive! Great Video as usual.
I airsoft so a removable lens is a must. Currently on the 5. I think I'll grab a 7. Not sure how much of an improvement it is though. I just use auto mode and youtubes compression always makes everything terrible.
One little item that you're dead wrong about: Putting the 7 on a gimbal mount makes for INCREDIBLY smooth shooting as the gimbal adjusts for larger movements and the GoPro handles smaller movements. The combo is not for every situation, but if you want steadicam-like motion, a gimbal adds a LOT. The 7 worked okay on my sailboat, as an example. But adding the small 100 dollar gimbal made it even better while also providing a great way to hold the GoPro. When you do reviews, try to consider the many other applications that these cameras see. I'm also using a Sony RX100 VI on a gimbal because it provides a proper optical zoom and gives images the GoPro cannot achieve.
I own the 7 and looking at the 8, I think I'm gonna stick with the 7 till the 9 comes out. Really not that much difference to justify the price upgrade.
That comparison on durability is very informative and made my mind! Thanks a lot, just made my mind and will definitely go with hero 7 because you are right...what good is an action camera if you might scratch your lens and than you are just -400 $.
Another reviewer emailed GoPro support about the lens cover issue and they stated that there was no service available and replacing the camera was the only option. So swim at your own risk.
The only thing they did better is the menu system - those easy settings switches. But I consider this only as a software update that could have been done even with the GP7. 👎
Question. I’m not a tech person. I have an iPhone and iPad. No other computer. Price isn’t a concern. I’m looking to make videos for myself and my young kids of our off road and camping adventures. Nothing fancy and not for public, just for us. GoPro 7 or 8, or any other recommendations?
Hmm... looking to get a GoPro and i am considering 7 or 8 black... Seems i have to go with the 7 though due to the replaceable lenscover alone, as it does not seem the 8 brings anything to the table that outweights the option to actually 'save' your camera if lens get scratched/cracks... weird way to go backwards... good comparison video, thanks for that :)

Nice review, bought 7 black for 250, 9 is 400 larger heavier, 8 is 300 non replaceable lens and poor battery door placement.
I have the first GoPro, I went scuba diving and saw a huge pufferfish, bigger than a football . The thing didn’t even capture it even though it was right next to us
I agree with you, I would rather get the Hero7 Black. It has the same internal as the 8. It really should perform as well as the 8 if GoPro would just update the firmware on the 7, you would think, but GoPro would rather you move up to the 8 and spend more $$$
hypersmooth 2.0 is way better than 1.0 for tough action like mountain biking. It really helps.
This has to be the best channel when it comes to action camera comparisons.
Cheers! :)
I just bought three GoPro 7's for 200$ each at. Cost and it came with accessories and 32 gb scd. For that price you can't beat it.
I just bought the 7. I need to be able to replace my lens cover. I'll probally buy another one in a few years.
Super helpful... Thanks!!! I've got a budget (akaso) action camera and this really helped for my future decisions!
Glad I watched toll the end where you discuss accessory compatibility! I have accessories for legacy models. Lol
Hero 8 is not an action camera. It’s a vlogging camera.
P Godaz hmmm. your wrong
Dumb
Been using a Hero 3 for the past couple of months and didn't realize how far they've come until I started researching the 7 and 8 models. WOW, even straight out of the box the difference between a hero 3 and hero 7 is massive! Great Video as usual.
Thank you so much for you super honest REVIEW! I was really thinking of not buying HERO 8 for the same reasons as you said. It enlightened me so much!
I have the hero 7 silver and only need an external mic option so think I will just upgrade to hero 7 black
Good time to buy the 8 right now it’s on sale for 299 and the 7 is 229 . Just got my 8
Great review I have been shooting the 7 and I like it a lot but I agree with you the 8 is not it THX jss
glad i found this
probably buying the 7 today anyone still having freezing issues with it?
I have a silver 7 and haven’t had any
Christian S thanks for the response !! I’ll be going for it in the morning !
MGL_OUTDOORS no prob
I watch your videos of comparing things the most.. Just thought you should now 😁 guess I trust your opinion the most! 👍 Keep it up bro'
Thank you very much for this comparassion. This is what I need. 😸😸
I airsoft so a removable lens is a must. Currently on the 5. I think I'll grab a 7. Not sure how much of an improvement it is though. I just use auto mode and youtubes compression always makes everything terrible.
If you want to upgrade, I just bought my first GoPro (hero 7) for 200$ at Costco
@@josuepaz9446 they still have them?
@@sally2395 yes I least where I live they do
Been looking at getting a GoPro for a while now. Seems to me the 7 Black is still a great camera so I’ll go for that and save myself £100
This video saved my money
Great video thanks. My opinion is wait til the Hero 9 comes out. I bet they put a replaceable lens on the 9.
Can u do a GoPro 8 durability test because of the non removal lens
I own the 7 and looking at the 8, I think I'm gonna stick with the 7 till the 9 comes out. Really not that much difference to justify the price upgrade.
Great video! And we hike rainbow mtn all the time!
By the way COSTCO Store is selling the Go Pro 8 for under $300.00.i just bought mine a few days ago. April 2020
The audio on the 8 seemed to be lightyears better
thanks for the advice ill go for go pro hero7 black
That comparison on durability is very informative and made my mind! Thanks a lot, just made my mind and will definitely go with hero 7 because you are right...what good is an action camera if you might scratch your lens and than you are just -400 $.
never gets bored watching
Another reviewer emailed GoPro support about the lens cover issue and they stated that there was no service available and replacing the camera was the only option. So swim at your own risk.
james R. Heck!!
Thank you! This was very informative. I love your charisma and will definitely subscribe!
The only thing they did better is the menu system - those easy settings switches. But I consider this only as a software update that could have been done even with the GP7. 👎
Great video, coming from a Hero 7 and DJI Osmo owner
I'm gonna get the Hero 7 Black bc i can't afford the Hero 8 and im to worried that i would break the lens cover
Lucy Magg just bought a 7 & I love it think it’s a better build & you get a hard case for it two extra mounts 329 can’t beat it
@@Ian-Earle gopro just had a sale for $200
FRESHPRINCE505 lol bought a hero8 black for 300
@@Cookie-yp5qg I got the Hero 7 and a second battery and a tripod for 300$ in December. Back then the Hero 8 without accessories was 430$
I fact... touch screan is also not replaceable and it never was. And it's bigger and less durable than the lens. So what's so big deal? :P.
Nice review, very informative.
Thanks so much!
great side by side review! i think im going to go pick one up. with your links of course !
The gopro 8 I can tell is clearer than the 7 also sharp and more viverant colors and greater detail light differences show too. So far the 8 has it.
