  • IK Multimedia's Modo DRUM has had an update to V1.5. Three new kits, new 2022 cymbals added & it sounds and feels like the engine has also had a tweak or two... It feels a bit quicker and sounds great!.. Amazing stuff!!

    Thanks for the review, appreciate it, I agree, amazing product. The mapping is a bit tedious (as per previous comments) with connection to my Yamaha QY700 Sequencer (Old School, yes, I still use it for songwriting), syncing up the drum only midi out send parameters from the QY700 sound module is a bit painful, not as simple as I hoped it would be but the sounds and tone control of Modo drum are definitely a step up to say the least and worth the time to get it working to full capacity (not there yet, only recently purchased Max Studio 3.5) Your other Modo drum review was great too, Cheers

      try the shell diameter & depth. If you turn the top head down completely, you'll notice the shell dimensions tune the bottom head, then you can raise the top head volume and tune that differently 👍

      Hi! How's that update been working for you? I'm thinking about buying Modo Drum (I'm really tired of sample player engines), but I demoed version 1.0 before and they definitely sounded way too synthetic, even for a physmodel synth. No comparison to samples. How does it sound now?

  • @jesussaddle
    @jesussaddle 2 года назад

    I loaded them up and put a Bus Compressor on them, and EQ'd the Hihat. And now these sound much, much better. The CPU is not as low as with SD3 and BFD, but its livable on this system. And I actually am liking what I'm hearing.
    Did you buy outright or upgrade dancetech? Because I'm a confused customer. I don't know if I have version 1.5 with the new kits, or if I own 1.5, SE now even though I owned MODO Drums Full Version.

    This appears to be a free upgrade from the previous version... Is that what others are experiencing?
    I've had so much trouble upgrading from the old version to this 1.5 version... and when I finally got it up and running, it still shows some kits as not being downloaded yet, and other kits as locked as if I haven't purchased them.
    But in the Product Manager, it shows that I have version 1.5 installed and authorized, which would indicate all 13 kits are MINE. mine mine mine...
    What's your experience?

    • @dancetech
      @dancetech  2 года назад

      apparently, if you UPGRADE then the 3 new kits are NOT included with the free upgrade, they can be purchased (i believe for a discount price if you bought the previous version & 1.5 was an upgrade)

    • @MikeBrayton
      @MikeBrayton 2 года назад

      @@dancetech interesting. You didn't just upgrade? Or are you running a trial version or something? What a weird thing for a company to show you you've got an upgrade, tell you it comes with three new kits, show you that the version is authorized, then when you actually upgrade the kits aren't free? ...as if you're running a custom shop version.... Anyway, if the overall sound is way better that's a major bonus.

      I agree the presets kinda mask the true potential of MODO DRUM soundwise. But I guess it's a matter of taste. Maybe they could be a bit more varied in this segment.Tweaking the humanizing options (hit zones randomization on drums, etc.) can make it sound very realistic and convincing.

    The IK Multimedia Product Manager is an absolute nightmare when it comes to a download and instillation program. It's the pitts and their customer support is terrible! You wait days for a response which is usually a system generated response and they couldn't organise flies around crap when sorting out my many issues when I upgraded to Total Studio Max 4. The program settings is supposed to allow you to set a file download path to an external library but it still downloaded those huge files onto my system drive, causing it to quickly fill up! The sounds might be good but everything else about IK Multimedia gives me a very severe case of anxiety and anger! The 180 day download period after which you have to pay to download files of products that YOU'VE ALREADY PAID FOR is truly despicable and I'll never purchase anything from IK again despite having been a loyal user of their products since 2004! Even a rep from IK Multimedias Australian distributor who was absolutely fantastic with his assistance mentioned that dealing with the company is less than pleasant and that they have a very sanctimonious approach to communication and customer service. The arrogance of IK Multimedia when I've dealt with them has been truly breath taking and I don't remember them behaving this way when I dealt with them back in the early 2000s. I managed to get the many sound library files and file paths downloaded and working but it took me many days with a lot of trial and error, gnashing of teeth and much swearing! I decided to reinstall the IK Product Manager because I was having so many issues with JavaScript errors and the like and then the sounds page said that none of my files were downloaded and installed! As a matter of fact, their reprehensible 'customer service' gave me no correct answers and suitable solutions and their IK Multimedia Product Manager makes it feel like that we're back in 2003! They've certainly lost me. It's such a great shame really as their products are actually fabulous once their set up correctly. I'll stick with Native Instruments, Arturia, Fxpansion and Izotope, all of whom have product installers that do all the hard work of downloading, installing and authorising their products for you with the minimum of fuss! BYE BYE IK MULTIMEDIA!!!! 🤬🤬

    Really tried hard to like this, but SD3 just completely blows this out of the water on every single level to my ears. So many more options, sounds, and usable presets. Especially the hi hat. So much more of a human feel on SD3. Even all the presets with grooves and fills on MODO just sounded like your basic drum machine. Hate to sound so negative but just really was not impressed and found that not only SD3, but addictive drums, Slate, etc. all just so much better. But I am just ridiculously picky about drum sounds so maybe that’s a factor…

    • @jesussaddle
      @jesussaddle 2 года назад +1

      I thought it sounded poor in this video demo (I listened on nice studio monitors). But when I loaded it up (minus the 3 new kits which I don't own) I have to say if you place a nice VCA compressor like IK Multimedia's "Bus Compressor" (which I am quite pleasantly surprised by but that's another story) the drums don't actually totally compete with SD3 and BFD on that same playing field - but they offer some sound and quality and customization not found in SD3 also. IK has great sales too, so I try to appreciate them as a struggling company - as long as your CPU is modern with plenty of cores MODO drums is actually a nice piece of gear to own. That said, the hihat is definitely a weakness with modeled drums thus far; don't know any company that has solved it; and IMHO MODO's programmer/s were counting on someone following them using EQ. Hihats are designed with care, and that extra work in crafting the materials and mechanisms is unique to each one. They could have factored in a "typical" EQ adjustment on the sound - I don't find it hard to address - but primarily what I do is high pass much of the low end from the model, followed by generous bell curves. That seems to return them to a more natural HIHat sound. Drum romplers are generally better than modelers, and are less taxing on CPU as well - Pianoteq and MODO Drum and MODO bass are pioneers. Even the romplers, BFD and SD3 had it different, because BFD had some features that added to the realism - I forget what it was called - since when you repeatedly hit a hihat it responds differently than when it is hit the first time after coming to rest.
      But the one benefit to modeled drums in general is their great you want to design something unique - like for a film score - you can tweak to get some incredible toms and snares and kicks to use for that.

    Can't believe you've never used any other drum VST that gives you raw drum samples, BFD has been doing this since BFD1 was released back in 2004.
