    Subscribed after searching for a good noise gate... Love your science and research! Thank you... (I chose a TCE Sentry after your larger, more thorough noise gate video and many others in my own research. Almost got the Revv G8, but price won out)

    The Decimator took it here in the audio section even over the Zuul, it's kept the audible hiss inbetween notes under control better

    Wonder how fast the Flamma FC10 Noise Gate is, even when it looks like one of the Mooer clones. So maybe also differs a bit, like the Donner one...

    I use a Boss NS2 with a HM2 and it is quite nice, granted I do not do the "stoppa stoppa" type riffing. I would also like to add that despite the Behringer NR300 being a clone of the NS2 it is not nearly as effective. The threshold at max still does not silence the HM2 and the decay is certainly slower than the Boss.
    That all said, I may have defective unit, but I doubt that is the case.

    Noise gates are something I'm starting to look into, so stumbling on this video (and your channel) is great timing. I think you touched on this at the beginning, but would noise gates also cut out clicks from pedals or the empty filtered white noise from a wah as well?
    I've always associated them with cutting feedback and djent-ier tones. But I'm thinking they're more useful in the larger picture.

    • @NickLeonard
      @NickLeonard  Год назад +1

      they will cut anything below the threshold you have it set at, so assuming your pedal popping on is below that, yes it will, as well as low level noise from a wah or distortion. all it really does is block the signal below the threshold point. it's still good to experiment and make your setup as noise free as possible even when using a gate, but there will always be some noise without one!

  • @metalprognosis
    @metalprognosis Год назад

    That was an oversite on my part sorry. I was focusing on the white noise so much I must have missed the effects of the guitar notes for that pedal.

    When you say “attack” do you mean the time for your guitar signal to get loud? Which is actually when the gate is “releasing” it’s clamp. I just want to make sure I understand your language

    • @NickLeonard
      @NickLeonard  Год назад

      Yes, the attack time is how long it takes for the gate to open and release is how long it takes to close again

  • @nashmanzl
    @nashmanzl Год назад

    My curiosity has to do with what you're using to test these gates with?

    • @NickLeonard
      @NickLeonard  Год назад +3

      as I briefly showed, it's a clip of white noise split into loud and soft sections to mimic the guitar signal and the "silent" parts (a guitar is never truly silent and it helps for measuring the decay)
      I'm just sending the noise clip as well as a brief actual guitar DI from the interface, through the pedal, and back in to record it. Same setup for all the pedals and then carefully aligned and measured.

    Not to keep on here. I have severe doubts that the EHX gate would ever see 8ms. Most reviews I watch, and folks on the boards I ask about it, say that this gate is just not doing it. This is a claim, or rumor of a claim that just ain't true.

    • @NickLeonard
      @NickLeonard  Год назад +1

      I figured I've give them the benefit of the doubt, since I don't have one to test myself, and I'm not sure exactly how Lee set it (I assume like the photos he sent of them) but that may just be marketing more than reality!

    So many issues with this...
    1. You can crank the Threshold up on any gate to shut "too fast". That doesn't make it better.
    2. You shouldn't assume that the Behringer and Boss (neither are gates), or the SUN Gate and ZUUL are the same quality.
    3. The ISP does have a "downward expander", essentially meaning it quiets the noise while you're playing, as well as gating. They're primarily made to be used in pairs, for "dead silence" (one before the amp, one in the loop).

    • @NickLeonard
      @NickLeonard  Год назад

      1. This is why I tested and retested and used my noise method for measuring. The actual speed (release time) is what I'm measuring, and no that's not dependent on when the gate clamps down. You're right that would completely invalidate the results, which is why that's not what I'm doing!
      2. Not sure what you mean by this. I'm not really commenting on "quality", this is about release time, and to some degree, features.
      3. Again, not sure what the disagreement is here. I've used a pair of decimators and it works well, though not that differently from having just one at the end like ISP recommends. Either way, it doesn't change release time.

      The Boss NS-2 definitely works "faster" than the Behringer. That's what I meant.
      ISP only recommends the "G-string" in the loop. The Decimator II's were designed to be used as a pair, and linked together with a 3.5mm cable.. essentially making a pedal version of their rackmount Decimator ProRack G (which also "gates" both ends, not just the loop).. and if you used a Decimator II on both ends and couldn't tell the difference, you're definitely doing something wrong.
      (Side note: I'm also surprised you didn't include the MXR Smart Gate, since it's technically the most popular "gate" on the market.)

    • @NickLeonard
      @NickLeonard  Год назад

      @@JoeyLizotte-di1vh I tested what I could with what Lee and I own, and would be happy for more people to recreate this and test more pedals!
      I wouldn't be surprised if the Boss is better than the Behringer, though I also don't see why Behringer wouldn't just produce an exact clone, the determining factor is likely a capacitor somewhere, and that's not a cost savings factor.
      As far as the Decimator, mine is the original Decimator I, and if you look up the manual it says "The pedal should always be the last device in the signal chain." and shows how to connect it in a loop as well. I know it's not the latest tech from ISP, but again, what I own.
