Under the Rose is my favourite track on The Elder. Agree also that it sounds like Ace playing that solo and I love it.

I like the little difference or musical progress they did ! I‘m glad they did The Oath ; Dark Light ; Just a Boy ; Escape from the Island ; Mr. Blackwell and the other Songs ! Maybe they should released it with a 1981 KISS Poster or a Innersleeve with 1981 Band Foto to Sale it better.......
Used to HATE it until the 97 remasters came out almost didn’t buy it. I figured I will complete the collection. So I bought it and first listen in like 16 years and it was pretty good. It just got better and better the more I listened. Now I don’t love it but it is pretty good and underrated
The Oath is my favorite. The shredding that Ace did on the live performance from “Fridays” would have been appreciated on the album version, but at least Ace got to shred on other tracks. Such an interesting album.

I watched KISS live on that show when they did the songs from the Elder album , it was a show like Saturday night live called Fridays , it was a good show , and I loved it when they had KISS on their show and they played the new music. And I was always a fan of the album and a fan of the song “I” , not crazy about world without heroes , but I can deal with the song.

Hey man, good stuff. Ya gotta revisit/re-evaluate these albums every once in a while. Our musical tastes constantly evolve, they ebb and flow cos we’re not machines, we’re “almost” humans (get it?? Wooooo) on an emotional journey (OMFG…. I’m Pauth Tsthanley). I’m around your age and over the years I’ve gone from love to hate and back again many times on all kinds of great and not so great bands and albums. My thoughts on ‘The Elder’ are pretty close to yours. I like the album. Most of the deep ‘operatic’ songs I like A LOT. What kills it for me is; those songs are so over the top, so epic…, that you buy into this ‘promise’ of…. “OK this is definitely weird for KISS but they’re obviously building up to a grand story here…”. So you’re “all in”….., and the next song falls flat. Up, down, up, down…. Wait…. who’s the hero…? What’s he doing…? What’s the story….? Mr. Blackwell…. who’s he? “I”…. cool rock n roll… WHAT!!?? That’s it.., it’s over!!!?? I think I really wanted 4 full sides of ‘Under the Rose, Just a Boy…..” Yet…., I LIKE it. Elder will always be about a once a year guilty pleasure…, and I play it LOUD!!! Best wishes Dr. and I hope you didn’t take my ‘Face Dances vs It’s Hard’ diatribe last week the wrong way. I’d never try or expect to change your mind.., you’re a grown ass man, I respect that, and you’ve got good taste. Guess I finally decided to blow my angry little “It’s Hard” nut and it happened on your channel. The “F-you and F-me”…., those are jokes, a sign of respect. Cos you’re no dummy and you ‘get’ jokes. I got "The Elder" on my 10th birthday on cassette when it first came out. I had been reading about it in 16 Magazine before it came out, with the story about Eric Carr and the album. I loved the whole album from day one and still do. I love "The Oath" the best, but I love all of the songs besides "The Odyssey"(which is okay, but weird like you said). I also love "I" as well and "Only You", "Mr.Blackwell", "Dark Light", "Escape From The Island", and "Under The Rose". Killer album. Very strange, but awesome album. I kind of also felt in my opinion that it was influenced by all of the barbarian films and so forth that came out around that time(Conan), as well as Clash Of The Titans. I love "Music From The Elder". I have listened to it every since. I loved 70's KISS more, but I still love "The Elder".
To me the first three songs are too strange and I can't get into them. But it gets better after that. The Oath and I are my favorites on Elder. I do remember the World Without Heroes video and Solid Gold performances in 1981. I was ecstatic that KISS was on TV. But looking back 40 years later.1..ouch! Those outfits are weird, and Paul's "Jane Fonda Workout" headband with " Helen Roper's" beads were 100% DUMB!
I had heard that Paul wore the headband to cover up his ear because of the short hair
@@stevereavis65 OK, that is understandable. I read his autobiography Face the Music and I feel for him regarding the microtia on his right ear. But he should have chose another color instead of pink and should have wore gold or silver chains instead of beads.

I love The Elder, and I'm glad more fans have warmed to it over the years. Of course, I was a bit confused when I first heard it back in '81, but I still liked it. I also play it more than a lot of the more popular records from KISS.
LOVE IT! In my opinion it's the greatest album ever recorded
"Fanfare" is a nice setup for the Fantasy/Middle Earth tone of the album. It activates my old school Dungeons and Dragons imagination. I don't mind Paul's falsetto voice in "Just a Boy." "Odyssey" reminds me of the pre-recorded tracks people used to sing to in church. Once I get past my childhood PTSD, I actually enjoy that song even with Paul's weird, Elvis-like tones. "Only You" is sheer beauty! "Under the Rose" is AWESOME! I think the guitar work is Ace. The rest of the album is great! "I" is a cool conclusion, not bad at all.

I think the guitar solo in Under The Rose is Paul. It has the same nuances as in Hold me touch me solo and in Sure know Something solo, whick I also think is Paul, he's got that magic touch in solos. I am a guitar player and I'm a 100% sure.
I totally agree with you on the elder. I have Been into kiss from 1978 to 1981. And its cool the album are different. You can always find a album that’s in different moods.
The first 5 seconds of Under the Rose solo - the reverse bend, the pinched harmonic, the wide vibrator, the thick tone, with a bit of phase - it's Ace! Mr Blackwell is my favourite solo on this album - full spaced out Ace magic!!!
That solo sounds nothing like Ace lol. The phrasings, the guitar tone all sound like Paul’s set up with either his Ice Man or Flying V guitar with the delay effect panned opposite the guitar track.

Hey doc.. You were spot on. I have to say I wanted to love it at 12 years old in 1981. It took me a few years to adapt. A World Without Heroes had me from the beginning, but you’re correct, was weird to see the Demon crying all those years ago. Still love it, I listen to it a lot as well…

I like how the bridge on "I" somewhat resembles a stripped down version of "Running Free" on its bridge. "I" also has that 2/3 chainsaw time signature.

Love this album! I enjoy every song, my favourite is Under the Rose too, I made my name on here after the song Dark Light after first hearing this album too, The Elder rules!

I saw Paul at his art gallery showing in Charlotte NC…. I asked Paul about that solo… he said it was him…. So, there it is.

Like or Dislike: Like. There are riffs and solos on this album that are timeless, and I appreciate the thematic similarity to 2112. It's healthy for a band to explore new directions.
I was 16 YO when i first heard/bought this album back in late 82/early 83, and i loved it pretty much from the get go. That opinion has never changed. I have gotten really pissed off with Gene and Paul over the years the way they slag it off now and totally distance themselves from it. I've said it before, but they seriously need to grow some balls and stick by the convictions that led them to write and record it in the first place! Yes it was a brave move, especially to do it when they did, but more power to them for exactly that. Still, whatever they, or anyone else thinks of it, i fuckin' love it! \m/ (:o)
It's a very interesting left turn. They couldn't have continued this way. Love some of the songs. I'll still take it over Unmasked and Hot in the Shade any day. I had it on cassette back in the day. I think KISS had a lot of balls for taking such a big chance on it. I wonder for the song I if they had been listening to Thin Lizzy's Black Rose-Do Anything You Want to Do...The Odyssey book about this album is awesome...it leaves no stone unturned.

Always liked this album. First track I heard was on a radio rock show here in the UK, they played Under The Rose, and I couldn't believe it. Blown away. I was comfortable with the "concept" album idea, probably in part from being a massive Rush fan too. I know It was weird for Kiss, but at the end of the day, a good record is a good record. Love The Elder, such a great album. Got me back into Kiss since I got out of them after liking them growing up, then about 8 years ago I was on this "albums hated by the band" experiment and fell in love with the album and then got back into Kiss in general hardcore. I hated Kiss because of Gene after he said he was in it for the money after the reunion, now I realize that type of shit he exaggerates as part of his persona. Love the album, it rules! I hope they remix the Ace solos back in one day...

I didn't really like this album. When it came out. But Years later. I played it and it Grew on Me Like a fungus. When I bought the remasters CD. I liked even more. I guess it was the original line up of the songs. That's probably why I liked even more. Dark Knight was originally Called Don't Run. By Ace Frehley. It's on RUclips check it out. The music is the same but the lyrics are changed. I really liked all the songs on it. I know that Ace Frehley second sightings solo album. Had the song that called on The Elder. Escape from The Island. Eric Carr was on the drums . Ace Frehley recorded with Eric Carr. Like The Beatles. When they recorded . Sergeant Pepper's Lonely hart Club Band album. It was a complete different sound. The Elder is KISS Sergeant Pepper's Lonely heart Band. Album. Because it's a total different sound from KISS. That's what I think.

Love this album! It is underrated for sure.
BTW, the riff in Only You was also used a few years later by Tommy’s band Black N Blue in the song Nasty Nasty. It was just sped up a little bit.
I think the follow up album was supposed to be named Gods Of War.

I had no idea it was out of print when I went to look for it in 1988. I had no idea it was so universally hated. After listening to it X-number of times over the years, I really really don't get why it did so badly. There are some damn good songs on this record, except for "I", which I didn't especially care for.

Love this album. I bought it when it came out and I was shocked it was a Kiss album but I thought it was a movie soundtrack so didn't judge it like a 70's Kiss album. At that time in my small town, if you even mentioned Kiss you would get ridiculed so there wasn't a lot of info floating around about who liked or hated it. So I had to form my own opinion. It grew on me too more every time I listened to it. I agree on Under the Rose solo. Sure does sound like Ace.
The technical term for a typical Ace solo is called a pull off.
Not even remotely close. A pull-off is just a guitar technique. It's not a solo, and it's definitely not a solo that's exclusive only to Ace.
for me , im a huge kiss fan, but man do their albums have much filler except for a few choice albums that are good all the way through. most times i make compilations of Kiss songs from various eras, some of what i consider their best songs. Music from the Elder is definitely one i can hear all the way through, since teh songs are so different from each other, and it has a good flow to it.
think ill give it a listen ...its been awhile

After all these years , I still have mixed feelings about the album. A few songs are okay , some of it is unlistenable. No wonder Ace didn't like the concept of the album. I do like The Oath , Dark Light , A World Without Heroes , Mr Blackwell and Escape From The Island , the rest I don't care for.
Man, I tried 3x so far and can't get passed the second song!! Unbelievable, really, but true, so, next time I will skip over and get to the rest of it. I say to myself, if the DR loves the Elder, must be pretty good after all?
Ace once said the Elder wasn't a bad album, just not a good Kiss album. Let that help you in your rediscovery of The Elder.
whatever video you make always good i realize put effort in video. yeah some songs are mellow but some songs rock i like the elder. I'm sorry but i love that paul stanley falsetto. i know that paul did guitar solo on world without heroes rest probably ace. good album.

Its definitely a fun album but not in my top 10 Kiss albums. Its definitely Ace on the solo for Under the Rose. Ace plays on most of the album except the few solos Paul did.

The Elder has definitely grown on me. Definitely a few songs I don't like, but there's some solid tracks there.

"The Elder"(1981) is a good album. What doomed it is that previous to it, KISS had released 2 "pop-disco" oriented albums, and when "The Elder" came out, it was the "third strike" for many. This album, as is, would have fared better if the band had released in 1979. Or, if "Dynasty" (1979) and "Unmasked" (1980) - same songs - but would have been produced by someone else such as Eddie Kramer or some other ROCK (not bubblegum Pop) music producer, then "The Elder" would have been better accepted, and not outright rejected as it has been. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley fucked up big time when they chose Vini Poncia - the guy that produced the WORST of the 4 solo albums not once but TWICE. I would like to believe that at the time, Gene and Paul were doing coke along with Bob Ezrin, because to take into account that these two "geniuses" actually gave credibility to a producer who abused drugs and put him in charge of a major project, I'd have to arrive at the conclusion that they were more fucked up in the head than we'd all like to believe. At least neither Ace nor Peter (or the newcomer Eric Carr) were allowed to make decisions, so they cannot be blamed for this.
I always thought that “The Elder” was a good album! I was hoping to see the movie that supposed to be made!
Interesting….. odyssey is literally the only song I like on The Elder. Tastes are so subjective.
The only song I really don't like is "I". Lyrics are a bit hokey.

Dynasty was great , Unmasked okay but The Elder was pretty awful.
Music from The Elder is far superior to Dynasty and Unmasked combined. The original founding members of KISS need to re-record Elder as their final album produced by a sober Bob Ezrin. They don't even have to be in the same town. I would even make the film.
The Elder is ordinary at best. Dynasty craps all over it , even Unmasked is better.
Im probably in the minority here and i mean no disrespect to anyone but i hate the elder. To me it doesnt sound like a kiss record. The album cover doesnt exactly scream "kiss" either. Im.not gonna bash it, everyone has a right to their likes/opinions. Im a big creatures of the night guy.
Creatures craps all over The Elder , only decent songs on it are Escape From The Island , The Oath , Only You & World Without Heroes. The four songs I love on Creatures are SO much better than those four.
