Rock n roll over is their best album. However, 24 Rock n Roll Over albums back to back to back would be monotonous and boring. Once in awhile you have to take a left turn to wash the pallet before getting back to "classic" KISS. To go 50 years, you need "eras" and left turns to keep it fresh.
Love Elder!!! Never listened to Carnival. Believe it or not😂 Ive loved Kiss since I was 6 years old 1981! but the Non Make-up Era never appealed to Me!! Some Great Tunes, but to this day I dont even own any Non Make-up Kiss abums or Cds. Including Any of the Scab lineup 😂 honesty I know the Hits from the Non Make-up Era. But I Couldn't tell ya any album deep Cuts! During the 1980s all I was listening to was the 1970s Make-up Era!!! When I saw the First KISS Videos on MTV , I was like WTF!!!😂 the Tunes were good ....but Visually YIKES 😂 When The Reunion took place ....I cried..❤😂 Thats My KISSTORY!!! When they first came out with the makeup, I thought "don't be stupid, just show your real faces and just jam". They were good musicians, they were always more about "THE SHOW" than they were their artistic output.
In the VHS home video, KISS Konfidential, they were enthusiastically promoting CoS under the working title "Head", as in the CoS song "In My Head". Check it out.
I agree with PS on his take of COS as a last gasp for the KISS band looking to ride the waning grunge era. It was a toss-off album at the time which had a 7-day lifespan on local FM radio back in the day. I saw the short-lived Revenge tour in Toronto on Oct, 2nd 1992 it was cool and a fitting end to the non-makeup era. To be honest The Elder was an unrealized opportunity by KISS to do a lost cities tour in North America after the Dynasty shows only hit the major centres.
I wonder how it wouls've done had KISS continued with that lineup, finished the production of that album, did a COS tour, etc. The album was released in the midst of the reunion tour with different members, so it was largely ignored

It is only my opinion but KISS appeared to be starting another dry-spell commercially right before the Reunion Tour was announced, similar to the period The Elder was released through the COTN tour. A COS concert run may have played to half-full arenas and been cut-short as was the Revenge and COTN tours. Remember KISS never toured North America with the Unmasked album. Another opportunity for a lost cities tour. On the HITS tour KISS played a lot of secondary markets here in southern Ontario. Every show was sold-out. Merry Christmas.

I always liked the Elder. And though they never did the movie the album was supposed to be for, I always pictured it in my head as an animated movie kind of like the first Heavy Metal movie.
I think the last bare-faced album they did was "Hot In The Shade" which had a lot of great songs on it, and they never looked cooler. But then, as you said, the makeup came back on and the reunion took off, thank God.
Bruce Kulick wrote more tunes than Paul did on that album. It was a decent album, but it could have been better. Bruce isn't a good vocalist, but the best guitar player that followed Ace. Ace couldn't play half of what Bruce can, but his solo's are just perfect on every song. However the song "Domino" had an amazing guitar solo. as did many other tunes over the years. But I still like Ace's style more on lead guitar. As far as writing songs goes, Paul hasn't really wrote to many songs since the 70's. Gene's has written way more than Paul, and even Gene's had a lot of help along the way. But he's wrote more songs unassisted than Paul has.
paul has always written good songs and i never checked the album bc i watched them change styles almost completely from animalize. asylum. cinderella. crazy nights.....bon leppard, it was always chase wats hip but it was always too late. anyway the grunge thing after glossy revenge was sickeningly deliberate yet they can write cool heavy songs. anyway. peace

I can never get through carnival of souls. It just sounds so forced and natural for them. I also grew up in the grunge/post grunge era of rock. I’m really burnt out on that style. I like the elder now but it’s also not even close to being a favorite kiss record

Sorry Paul, Elder is a masterpiece. In fact, Paul hates some of my favorites! Carnival is the best “grunge” album not from Seattle, there I said it, heavy af though maybe a bit too long. Compare it to other legacy bands “grunge” attempts like what Queensryche or Dokken did to fit into grunge and Carnival stands taller! Paul is my favorite member but I still love the albums he hates. I'm curious. Why do you dislike Childhood's End? I like it, myself. The title is taken from the novel by Arthur C. Clarke that inspired 2001: A Space Odyssey. I like the ambiguity in the lyrics. I'm not sure what it's about, but I think that's part of its charm. It seems to be about something personal to Gene. And Gene doesn't write many of those.

I feel like the only true Kiss albums were the first three and Alive. Because the time that they started working on "Destroyer" they weren't even really working together. Everyone just played tunes that other people wrote, or they brought in a song or two and added it to everyone else's songs. "Love Gun" was the last album that they actually worked together on, and even that was just a few songs. But I liked many tunes by them, but it was never the same after 78' And I believe that's because they stopped working together. Just my opinion. But I believe that you'd agree with me. Peace.. Joe
I have to respect Paul's opinion. He was the one who kept the band going all 50 years. Especially in the 80s. Kiss tried to do something different, fans either loved it or hated it. You live, you learn, you move on. That's what Kiss does best 👍.
What Paul does best is lie and be a hypocrite. And I thought Gene wrote better songs in the 80's. And he did not even care then. He wrote nothing as bad as Bang Bang You, My Way, Read My Body and many more.

Gene will be the first to admit that he was not all vested in Kiss in the 80s. Paul did carry the band and had some hit songs, even though they may not have aged well. He still carried the band.

funny I loved the Elder and Carnival of souls! Fantastic albums and very under rated! I love Rain from Stanley and under the Rose from Simmons on the Elder plus a bunch of others!
I actually like those albums, probably more than the stuff Paul Thtanley constantly overrates like 'Revenge'. Bruce Kulick did a mini 'Carnival Of Souls' set on Kiss Kruise. Paul sang & played his best on that record, ironically. I'm sure if those albums sold he would change his tune.
Carnival Of Souls was one of my favorite albums. It was raw and different. But still had that Kiss sound. And that was maybe why I liked it. But yeah. Radio played it for about a month. Then it was gone. And ever since then all I hear is people(as well as Kiss) bashing it.

If you want to learn from Paul's infinite wisdom give his book 'Backstage Pass' a try. Whoever reads it will showered with eternal blessings from Paul's words. And it's a thin book. Still bigger than a pamphlet though.

It's kinda funny that Paul had a problem with Kiss trying to be a second rate Soundgarden or AIC but he didn't have a problem with them being a second rate Village People or Donna Summer with a big chunk of the Dynasty album.

@drummer78 I'm in my own swatch of KISS fandom. But, I still see plenty of hate for Elder. I like 3 tracks of it, whereas I like about half or more of Ralph's much loathed Crazy Nights and Hot In The Shade.
Carnival of souls is unfinished as it’s called the final sessions. Not fully produced. It’s a real stinker of an album. Don’t like any songs on it. Coming after the amazing revenge too. Music from the elder sounds like people who are high on drugs. I do listen to most of the songs as it’s the last kiss album with the classic sound and with 3 originals. It’s not very good though and there are a few shit songs on it haha.

The Elder actually has some of their best songs.I particularly like The Oath & Under the Rose. I only ever made it thru 3 or 4 songs of Carnival & lost interest..but I do love Foo Fighters.
Elder and CoS were albums Gene was heavily involved in. So when Paul says “Gene checked out in the 80s to be a movie star” it had everything to do with it being the “Paul Stanley of KISS Show”. There was one CoS leftover era song that made it to “Psycho Circus”. Gene and Paul need to classify these albums as “cult classics” instead of putting them down.
Hahaha.. Damn, you make some funny ass video's. Kiss had problems selling tickets on the "Dynasty" tour. In fact they ended their tour early because of poor ticket sales. Then "Unmasked" was released, and that wasn't any good, fans hated it.. Then "Music from the Elder" was another Bob Ezrin nightmare for Ace. Ace Frehley hates Bob Ezrin. That album didn't sell well and Kiss couldn't sell tickets. Ace Quit and felt like he could do better without them. And guess what? His Frehley's Comet band was better than "Unmasked" & "Music From The Elder" But not better than "Dynasty" IMO. Great video Ralph. You always make me laugh. Come on Ralph! "I Confess" is bad ass! I love how it goes from a moody and droning (but melodic) verse, straight into Paul's vindictive, upbeat chorus. Maybe the mixing and production needs work, but the song itself is 100 percent there.

Just check out the LIVE version of "The Oath" from the comedy show Friday's to get a real life reality check. No lip syncing here boys and girls and Ace t@@k proper liberty with his live solo and wasn't edited out short like on the actual record. As a matter of fact all the songs they played from The Elder live on this show(Friday's) went off just fine in my opinion. It's quite a shame that Paul Thanley of KITH can't at least be honest about his least favorite KITH album since everyone but him seems to already know that it's Ace's KITH solo album! lol...Rock On!

i like the elder. but kiss albums when kiss put makeup back on wasn't crazy bout. i like paul & vinnie & ace but not everybody likes the same things everyones different. Odyssey definitely doesn't sound like kiss. dark light rocks.
COS is my favorite Kiss album, followed by Creatures and Rock and Roll Over. And I'm not even a big grunge fan. I just think the songwriting is really strong.
Stanley Eisen, alleged Pickle Whistler and lip synchin' sensation has seen his best before date come and go several decades ago. Kind of sad how money hungry him and Gene Klein are, but whatever. Carnival Of Souls was a good album, although I did like better when Alice In Chains recorded it. Seriously, it wasn't bad. Best songs closely mirror your picks, with some variance depending on the day. The Elder was an overall disappointment with the exception of The Ace tunes and "Escape From The Island" "A World Without Heroes" and that cringe video suck extra hard. Just an opinion.

I feel like the only true Kiss albums were the first three and Alive. Because the time that they started working on "Destroyer" they weren't even really working together. Everyone just played tunes that other people wrote, or they brought in a song or two and added it to everyone else's songs. "Love Gun" was the last album that they actually worked together on, and even that was just a few songs. But I liked many tunes by them, but it was never the same after 78' And I believe that's because they stopped working together. Just my opinion. But I believe that you'd agree with me. Peace.. Joe

CoS was decent as was The Elder. For their time, they were ok.
I remember watching the KISS Convention shows and Paul would say “The next album we have recorded is possibly one of the best we’ve done”. As always
I have to respect Paul's opinion. He was the one who kept the band going all 50 years. Especially in the 80s. Kiss tried to do something different, fans either loved it or hated it. You live, you learn, you move on. That's what Kiss does best 👍.
What Paul does best is lie and be a hypocrite. And I thought Gene wrote better songs in the 80's. And he did not even care then. He wrote nothing as bad as Bang Bang You, My Way, Read My Body and many more.
@@almosthuman56 Gene wrote some great songs in the 80s I agree. But if Gene was 100% committed to Kiss in the 80s, they would have been as big as they were in the 70s. Gene will be the first to admit that he was not all vested in Kiss in the 80s. Paul did carry the band and had some hit songs, even though they may not have aged well. He still carried the band.

funny I loved the Elder and Carnival of souls! Fantastic albums and very under rated! I love Rain from Stanley and under the Rose from Simmons on the Elder plus a bunch of others!
I actually like those albums, probably more than the stuff Paul Thtanley constantly overrates like 'Revenge'. Bruce Kulick did a mini 'Carnival Of Souls' set on Kiss Kruise. Paul sang & played his best on that record, ironically. I'm sure if those albums sold he would change his tune.
Carnival Of Souls was one of my favorite albums. It was raw and different. But still had that Kiss sound. And that was maybe why I liked it. But yeah. Radio played it for about a month. Then it was gone. And ever since then all I hear is people(as well as Kiss) bashing it.

The biggest downfall of KISS was the malignant narcissism of Paul and Gene.
It's kinda funny that Paul had a problem with Kiss trying to be a second rate Soundgarden or AIC but he didn't have a problem with them being a second rate Village People or Donna Summer with a big chunk of the Dynasty album.

Carnival of souls is unfinished as it’s called the final sessions. Not fully produced. It’s a real stinker of an album. Don’t like any songs on it. Coming after the amazing revenge too. Music from the elder sounds like people who are high on drugs. I do listen to most of the songs as it’s the last kiss album with the classic sound and with 3 originals. It’s not very good though and there are a few shit songs on it haha.
Paul shits on the albums that didnt sell well except Creatures of the night... Do you think he still wants to be a Crime Fighter riding a Stallion like he said on Tom Snyder?? Even Tom Snyder looked baffled !!
The Elder actually has some of their best songs.I particularly like The Oath & Under the Rose.
I only ever made it thru 3 or 4 songs of Carnival & lost interest..but I do love Foo Fighters.
I'm not wild about Foo Fighters, but for Dave's sake I'm glad they're a success. Courtney tried to screw him and Krist over in the Nirvana thing.

Elder and CoS were albums Gene was heavily involved in. So when Paul says “Gene checked out in the 80s to be a movie star” it had everything to do with it being the “Paul Stanley of KISS Show”. There was one CoS leftover era song that made it to “Psycho Circus”. Gene and Paul need to classify these albums as “cult classics” instead of putting them down.

Kiss had problems selling tickets on the "Dynasty" tour. In fact they ended their tour early because of poor ticket sales. Then "Unmasked" was released, and that wasn't any good, fans hated it.. Then "Music from the Elder" was another Bob Ezrin nightmare for Ace. Ace Frehley hates Bob Ezrin. That album didn't sell well and Kiss couldn't sell tickets. Ace Quit and felt like he could do better without them. And guess what? His Frehley's Comet band was better than "Unmasked" & "Music From The Elder" But not better than "Dynasty" IMO.

Come on Ralph! "I Confess" is bad ass! I love how it goes from a moody and droning (but melodic) verse, straight into Paul's vindictive, upbeat chorus. Maybe the mixing and production needs work, but the song itself is 100 percent there.

COS is my favorite Kiss album, followed by Creatures and Rock and Roll Over. And I'm not even a big grunge fan. I just think the songwriting is really strong.

Carnival Of Souls was a good album, although I did like better when Alice In Chains recorded it. Seriously, it wasn't bad. Best songs closely mirror your picks, with some variance depending on the day. The Elder was an overall disappointment with the exception of The Ace tunes and "Escape From The Island" "A World Without Heroes" and that cringe video suck extra hard. Just an opinion.

COS, and Elder are good albums. Sometimes sounds eclipse perception over time, and sometimes image doesn't (late 80's look).
