Saw VH three times with the original group. The best and most exciting concerts experience of my life. The energy and heat collected on that stage was intoxicating. Then I was VH on 5150. What a tragic transformation. I’d always liked Sammy solo (well...kinda). But all the brains and creativity had left the room. Suddenly, they were nothing more then a very AOR rock band. Faceless, bland and corporate. With David, VH were legendary. Gods of rock music.

Michael Anthony carried him for Yeats. Daxe can't sing high notes. Look at the interview with Edfie yelling how he loves Sammy because he can cover all ranges. Ed and Akex both say the same. He wasn't even close. Having said that, I learned to like him in Van Halen even though I much preferred Dave. I love Dave's studio voice and the way he sounds on albums. I think Dave's lyrics are more fun and clever as well. That was a great video. I love hearing opinions about Van Halen. I love Eddie and to me he is near perfect. Also, should be mentioned that, as you point out, having the #1 album means nothing back then if you didn't have the album sales in the long run. VH with Dave sold WAY more albums than VH with Hagar, despite the #1 albums and songs. Nothing Hagar did can top VH's first album with Dave, and 1984 was so big, everyone I knew back then owned it. Even people that didn't ever listen to VH before that. It had massive radio play with Jump and Panama, and Hot For Teacher was in rotation on MTV like every hour. As you say, only Michael Jackson was bigger that year.

5150 is one of my fave Van Halen albums, but at the same time, I totally respect people's opinions about Van Hagar, etc. Because to me, they should have changed the name of the band maybe, especially seeing as they only did 2-3 songs from the Roth era. Ridiculous with how the setlists went, if even the Cherone era did more old school stuff than Hagar era. I think if Hagar would've swallowed his pride and sang more Roth stuff it would have been a little better received- how in the hell did they get away with playing that little of Roth era stuff? Again, if they are replacing potential Roth era songs with solo Hagar songs and COVERS (which they did even on the 5150 tour, just played THREE Roth era songs I believe), to me that was a huge mistake even early on. No Mean Streets? No Unchained? Ludicrous. Or change the name of the band, it's obviously a different group (though i like both).

You nailed it and I've mentioned that multiple times. Hagar completely shit on VH fans. The Roth stuff he did sing was kind of lame. "Jump", "You Really Got Me", Ain't Talkin' Bout Love", "Panama"(the best cut of those 4) and that's it. Good thing I saw it on video cause I would have been pissed to see that live in 1986. Gary Cherone did not try to impose any Extreme stuff on the crowd and did a bunch of cool DLR era material.

I remember clearly a friend of mine buying Balance on cassette and cranking it up and enjoying some of it (Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do, Can't Stop Loving You) but knowing it was eons less memorable than the lesser Dave material. That speaks volumes. As for chart placement, when it came out I recall there being writeups about how though it debuted at #1, how it "stalled" at 2x Platinum at the time; a pretty poor showing for a VH effort overall, but amazing for most anyone.

Writing excellent killer riffs, licks and solos (Eddie), groovy kick-ass-rhythms (Alex), pounding bass lines (Michael) or mouthy yet subtle lyrics (Roth) is not the same as writing a well composed song, like Toto oe Paul McCartney.
Don’t get me wrong. I totally love Van Halen and other rock and metal bands. But rock music like Van Halen is usually not melodic enough to sing a long. “Hating Hagar makes me happy”- 5150 tour was one of my first concerts. I was 15. I saw Eat em and Smile tour too. I got into rock with Pyromania ,Out of the Cellar and the Crue. But when I heard VH I i was smitten. I had already heard 1984 but when I heard VH I it was over. I became Van Halen obsessed. I was also learning guitar so Eddie was the pinnacle of my attention. I did not grow up in a rock n roll house. I was the oldest and only music influence was my mom which was pop and some country. So the world of rock was all new. So when Van Halen put forth Van Halen with Sammy I was all in. Eddie could have brought a local cover band singer in and I would have been stoked. I was 15. HELLO BAAAAABY!!! Well for whatever it’s worth I love Sammy to this day. I hold Classic VH close close to my heart and revere VHI-1984 in higher ranks than Van Hagar but I think Sammy nailed it. I realize his short comings and so on but the homeruns he hit while in VH are undeniable. As far as his “lying”? I think your digging pretty deep and if you dug up most peoples skeletons you would uncover the same. Personally think ppl that like to dis on Hagar are just uptight. The guy had a damn good professional rock n roll run and if you think he gives a damn any of you naysayers opinions you're nuts. 5150!!!!

Don't get me wrong, he can do the music side of things fine in my opinion - not my fave guy, but he is nowhere near the worst musician in rock, I feel. But the CONCEPT of his songs are always shallow. The double entendre is lame, and bad motor scooters are'nt interesting to anyone who can understand and appreciate a tale. Dave Lee Roth? Storyteller. As for me, I've been a Hagar fan since '77. Love him solo, with HSAS, Montrose, Chickenfoot, etc.
But like you, I could NOT STAND HIM in Van Halen. He turned a badass band (arguably the country's greatest hard rock band ever) into a pop embarrassment. But aside from VH, I love his music.
As for personality, he always comes across as a super nice guy (I've never met him, nor do I know him, so my impressions are based solely on what I read and see in the media).
Serious question, Ralph: have you ever considered inviting Eddie Trunk on your show to discuss Hagar? He seems like the ultimate Hagar cheerleader, while you (and your former co-host) seem like the ultimate Hagar detractors. Van Hagar was good for fans who felt Boston, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Styx and Foreigner were getting too ballad heavy in the mid 80s. Rock music in soundtracks was something Irving Azoff was putting his acts into, which is why Hagar's name is on a ton of soundtracks (Heavy Metal, Up The Academy, Footloose, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, The Sure Thing, Vision Quest, Out of Bounds, Over The Top, Back To the Future II, Moving Violations). What I didn't like in his book is what he said about his ex-wife, the mother of his kids, who was with him through firings, signings, and couldn't help but complain that he had to pay her alimony - the "greatest hits album" - and making it sound like wife #2 could do no wrong (and probably spends more money on her in a weekend than he paid out in his divorce). The best part of the book was his attempt at procuring a wine collection using his tour rider and Irving Azoff throwing a wrench in it.

Van Halen played Central NY a bit when I was young. I'm from Rochester NY. The only tour stop that they used a curtain on was in April 1979 in Rochester at the 10,000 seat War Memorial. Just the fact that they headlined there not long after their 2nd LP came out is pretty cool. I believe that's where the (live) promo videos for the 2nd LP were recorded, btw. I saw them in 1981. Great concert - like the best backyard party you ever went to with the best band, best crowd and best time.
They played Rochester every year with DLR until 1982, when they played the Syracuse Carrier Dome. That's a 30,000 seater, so they were very big then with DLR.
Hagar generally played smaller venues. I think he played our War Memorial in fall of 1979, but that was a triple-bill with Scorpions and Pat Travers. Roth sold out the War Memorial around 1986. Loud as Fook. It was so darn loud you couldn't tell one song from another. It's a shame, because he had a good setlist.

Love it. I saw the 1984 tour but my seats at the snortatorium (Hollywood sportatorium) sucked (had much better seats for the reunion, right next to the sound board, they sounded great), also saw the Eat em and Smile tour (fantastic, the Steve Van/Billy Sheehan dueling eruption solo was amazing), and saw the Hagar/DLR tour, the show I saw Sammy opened (thank god) and to me it was like watching a Jimmy Buffet show, pitching his tequila no less, DLR on the other hand apparently had the best VH cover band in the country and it showed, was ridiculously good.
Regarding Eddie and Michael Anthony, when I first started playing guitar guitar world ran an interview with EVH where he basically trashed MA, said he doesn't doesn't listen to him (or can't even hear him) on stage, but "he's made enough money to buy a really cool car collection", Im paraphrasing of course but tbh I was kinda surprised, Id always thought the tension in VH was between DLR and EVH but apparently while Dave had his issues EVH was the real diva.

I thought KISS was your favorite American band? TRAITOR!! lol.
I don't really have a horse in the Han Halen vs Van Haggar war, I was not a big fan of Van Halen, I loved a few of their songs, the usual "pop" hits, Panama, Jump etc.. But Roth annoyed the shit out of me with all of his goofy yikes and yelps and it just seemed like the guy never shut up even during solo's lol. When Sammy took over I will be honest, I was glad, I liked a few of his songs and thought his voice was MUCH better than Roth's. I remember Eddie saying on MTV right after Sammy joined up, "It is going to be nice to now have a lead singer who can actually sing." LOL. When I heard "Best of both worlds" I was convinced I was right, that Haggar was going to make Van Halen bigger and more people like myself would become more of a fan. When I started hearing more and more very un-Van Halen like songs coming out from them, I thought for sure Sammy had actually ruined a once powerhouse band and turned them into a "poison-like" band. The really odd thing Doc? I really began liking DLR!! I much prefer his solo stuff over his Van Halen stuff!! Sensible Shoes for some reason really gets me lol. Oh shit what's that song I can't think of the name now, something rose, Yankee Rose? I love that one too. When Vai was announced as Roth's guitarist I thought that was very fitting because to be honest Vai is 100 times a better guitarist that Eddie is, but Eddie as far as I know tops Vai when it comes to innovations that he personally creates. Now as far as Michael Anthony and whole Eddie had to teach him his bass lines, I think that depends all on the context. Maybe Eddie had a vision of how he wanted the bass to sound differently when on the road than in the studio and so Eddie was simply showing Michael what he wanted him to do differently? Also, Haggar saying what Eddie said, it's all about the context Doc, was Sammy saying in his book, " I have heard that Eddie had to teach Michael his bass lines."? Or did Sammy say it matter of factly that Michael was so bad then he had to be shown how ton play the bass? The problem is that you literally have two different bands between Van Halen/Haggar, two different sounds, but people think they remained the same band, but they didn't but if more would accept that it's two different bands I think all this arguing would end. It's like listening to Paul and Gene without Ace's influence - they SUCK!! Throw Ace into the picture and WOW, now you got a rock band!!

Elvis is my favorite singer, American or not, that one is a definite. But I like so many other bands but I guess KISS is probably my favorite and maybe that's just because they were my introduction into the "modern (at that time, 1977) rock music" world? I think Def Leppard would be in my top 5 but they aren't American and after Hysteria I didn't really care for their music as much. AC/DC but they don't have any "deep" songs, it's all just about fun and women lol. Zeppelin, but they too have a lot of songs that are weird lol. The Two Greatest Debut Albums of All Time:
Montrose (1973) / Van Halen (1978) debut albums comparison:
    Similarities:
    1) both albums produced by Ted Templeman
    2) both albums named after lead guitarist
    3) both are debut albums
    4) two of the greatest classic albums in rock history
    5) both albums with same instrumentation - 4 members: front man/guitar/bass/drums
    6) both albums almost entirely electric
    7) only one song with subdued acoustic guitar (Ice Cream Man/Space Station #5)
    8) both albums with one sizzling blues (Ice Cream Man/Good Rockin' Tonight)
    9) both albums blues-rock based
    10) both albums with punchy hard rock sound
    11) both albums solid from start to finish, not one weak track
    12) both albums on same label (Warner Brothers)
    13) in many ways, Montrose 1st album was a prototype for Van Halen's 1st album
    14) both groups eventually replaced lead singer
    Differences:
    1) Van Halen introduces new modern guitar techniques
    2) Montrose: 8 songs / Van Halen: 11 songs
    3) Montrose: 1 cover (Good Rockin' Tonight) / Van Halen: 2 covers (You really Got Me/Ice Cream Man)
    4) Van Halen: 1 instrumental track (Eruption) / Montrose: no all-instrumental tracks
    5) Van Halen became huge / Montrose kept steady work, but on much smaller scale
    Interesting Observations:
    1) After leaving Montrose, Sammy Hagar becomes Van Halen lead singer
    2) All members of Van Halen are huge fans of Montrose
    3) the 1st Montrose album will always be the best album Hagar ever performs on, by a long shot

Just did the calculation from RIAA. Van Halen 1 through 1984 sold 34 million units vs. 5150 through Balance with 16 million units. Keep in mind, there more records to sell during Roth's tenure compared to Sammy's. So, taking the average DLR fronted VH album sold 5.6 million units vs. 4 million on average for a Van Hagar album. The worst as we can guess was Van Halen III fronted by Gary Cherone (formerly of Extreme) with only 0.5 million units sold (of course also released in 1998 when Napster and other file-sharing venues began to cut into record sales). In 1991, when grunge hit...Nirvana's Nevermind has hit 10 million mark compared to 3 million for For Unlawful. David Lee Roth's solo albums never exceed 1 million units and A Little Ain't Enough (also coming around the time grunge changed the equation) sold 0.5 million units. I wonder what would have happened to the Smithereens if Madonna showed up to lay down vocals on "A Girl Like You"?

Just ran into this. I agree 100 percent
Hagar wasn't sought out by VH like everyone thinks. The story is it was all a 'hello' at an auto shop. Its BS. Hagar and VH talked at a dealership, but the record companies were mortified over the breakup of DLR and the band and it, as always, became all about money. They wanted to keep the money momentum going and threw names around of who could replace DLR.
Hagar had an "FM easy listening" ballad hoarseness, and the execs pressured the relationship to "work" between a very drunk and hard to work with Eddie Van Halen and Sam Hagar.
Hagar was an industry choice. nothing more. It was awful it was an attempt to make a buttload more money than the "1984" album made with the industry putting their views ahead of raw VH music style.
in the end, Hagar was just another pleb that fell out of favor with the execs and band members and the brand.
    - and finally, even though I NEVER liked Hagars style in anything he did in music, he was used.
used by the business for executive record sales and profits to fit a formula.
Eddies dead now. All these guys are old now. All of them have huge regrets and see the evil that run the business and how they ruin so much with artists who can be very fragile in their lifestyle. Edward is a prime example of this.
Hagar was never my thing either...just wanted to rant about this and agree with you.

Great video Dr Fukk. Your the only person on the planet that is as big a Van Halen /KISS geek as I am. All the Hagar lies I didn’t know about. Great job researching and thanks for putting the info out there. I hated all Hagars solo music . And when Roth left VH, of all the singers in the world they had to get to front my favorite band, omg I thought my head would explode. Every Van Hagar album I gave it try, and just could not get past Hagar vocals. And last Roth was a great singer. He had a unique voice, he scream like hell, and he was great live. Go and watch old concert footage of Dave and he was awesome.
