They went from a party band to elevator music within the space of two albums. 5150 was a decent album. Loved the sound of Eddie’s Steinberger on two of the tracks. Ou812 was a huge shock to me. I couldn’t believe this was 3/4 of the people who gave us Tora Tora and Unchained. It’s probably got better with age but I suppose you also get used to syphalis after 34 years.
I’ve always wondered how Good Enough and Summer Nights from 5150 would have sounded like had Dave stayed. Supposedly they were written and worked up when he was still in the band. I wonder if there are any demos of those songs with Dave in the VH vault.
Appreciate your reviews and everyone has the right to like whatever version of the band they liked. Eddie Van Halen was the guitarist on the Sammy Hagar era albums so if they are that terrible shouldn’t he share some of the blame. After all he thought the songs were good enough to record and perform live.
I remember when Dave left the band and me thinking....Well, that's it. End of an era. And it was. They complain how Sammy de-balled VH, but don't forget: Eddie wanted more keyboards in the band. He wanted more melody. That's why he and Sammy got on so well. Till they didn't. It's that simple man.
Hey Ralph! (Jim F here) I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't "hate" the Van Hagar era or Sammy himself, but it does not hold a candle to Van Halen with DLR. I also think as time goes on my appreciation for Van Halen (DLR) just grows and grows, while my appreciation for Van Hagar sinks. A lot of their stuff I liked when new doesn't hold up very well as it ages. Chickenfoot holds up better than most Van Hagar.

Hey Ralph, the song 1984 originated as Michael Anthony's bass solo on the Hide Your Sheep tour in 82. You can hear it on a bunch of different shows from that tour. It's pretty much note for note w/o the high keyboard part
I hear so many people say that Sammy wrote more grown up lyrics than Dave and I've always thought that was insane. Dave's writing was so much more clever. OU812 is their weakest album. I do like Van Hagar but you always make me laugh and you make excellent points about why I shouldn't. Lol. This video was so great. Take care.

That line in The Wall, "Look, Mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky," is the opening to "Goodbye Blue Sky." The song is about the bombing of London during WW2 (or any aerial bombardment, really.) That line spoken by the child is so chilling to me because, normally, something like that would be a typical, sweet thing a child might say. An airplane in the sky is an exciting sight for a child. But in this instance, the child is naively remarking upon the very thing that is coming to rain down death and destruction on him, his family, and his city. The Wall is a god-damned masterpiece. The film is one of the very few times that an album or a band's music has been turned into a movie and it actually turned out to be nearly as much of a masterpiece as the original. That song scares the hell out of me, while also being as beautiful a thing as you can imagine. Just like the child's words.
Sammy Hagar probably thought he was being clever with the title of the album "Oh. You ate one too?" but it really sounded stupid. OU812 is Van Gina's worst album.
Bro, you got me cracking up, I laugh for a half hour straight on this one. My fav new past time is hearing you loving to hate on that ramen noodle head. Cheers!

This has got to be an easy clean sweep for VH2. I never listened to any Van Hagar era album start to finish. Hey, I wouldn't let the Sammy shit and van Halen 3 near the classic van Halen CDs. But, let's do this... 1. You're no good 2. Dance the night away 3. Somebody get me a doctor 4. Bottoms up 5. Out of love again 6. Light up the sky 7. Spanish fly 8. D.O.A. 9. Women in love... 10. Beautiful girls I got the Sammy Hagar van-gina stuff for completist reasons after Eddie died. Maybe I missed the boat on van Hagar. But, it's like missing the Titanic.
Funny video as always. I agree that Mine all Mine is Hagar digging back for something better but the dorky keyboards didn't help and though Michael Anthony is a great background singer, his efforts sound silly like "ooh ooh; I'll send a message!" I always thought I was the only one who enjoyed their cover of Your No Good the way it was delivered with the raw and legit rocking nature by DLR. I agree that EVH (God rest his soul) reminds me a tad of Paul Stanley who was quick to push something like Psycho Circus ("best album since Destroyer lol") and then take it back once the album came out and disappointed. Diver Down isn't their best but the original supportive narrative changed.
While you're more of a Van Halen fan than me i've listened to Van Halen 2 more times than i've heard OU812. I don't even remember how most things went on OU812
Contrary to popular belief, EVH wasn't the nicest corporate rocker in the world. Van Halen were the hookers of rock( a Phil Moog, Hit Parader review quote), albeit the best in history. You're No Good 2. Dance the Night Way 3. Somebody Get Me a Doctor (Sammy wrote Somebody get me a Procter) 4. Bottom's Up 5. Outta Love Again...Diver Down highly under rated. Fair Warning is the best per pound. 6. Light up the Sky 7. Spanish Fly 8. D.O. A. 9. Women in Love 10. Beautiful Girls. Another classic quaote by rolling stone. 'Van Halen replace the most obnoxious singer in rock with the second most.'
Pretty sure Van Halen covering Your No Good inspired the movie Cotton Candy. At least the idea of a Hard Rock band covering I Shot the Sherrif, which also sounded absolutely nothing like the original
My girlfriend loves all the sappy love stuff with Hagar so it's usually a lot of torture trying to get through when she wants to play that stuff, I'm definitely more of a Roth era Van Halen fan
I can tell I'm on the wrong page for sure. I never knew music was a competition . Numbers don't lie though '' Of those four Hagar albums, all four hit a peak on the U.S. charts of #1. The highest-charting Roth-led Van Halen album was a #2, and it took until 1984 to snatch that. (He repeated the deuce in 2012 with A Different Kind of Truth.)''
1984 was 2nd to Thriller. ADKOT was 2nd to Adele's 21. Shit comparison really. And you have to realise those Hagar albums had the brand name Van Halen behind them and a weakened playing field in regards to other competing artists in the nadir of the late 80's/early 90's. Even Without You was the most requested song of all time on rock radio, it was all hype, all of the continued success benefitted from the House that Roth (era) built.
Here is the definitive list of songs that represent the worst of Hagar’s lyrics: Good Enough, Summer Nights, Source of Infection, Black and Blue, Sucker in a 3 Piece, Spanked, In n’ Out…. I could keep going, but I would be listing almost 40 songs across 4 albums that have aged so badly. Not only was DLR the fun in Van Halen, but he was the brains as well.
I'm not a Van Hagar hater but VH2 is gonna crush OU812, I'm sure lol Mine All Mine Dance The Night Away Somebody Get Me A Doctor Bottoms Up Outta Love Again Light Up the Sky Spanish Fly DOA Women In Love Beautiful Girls VH2 wins 9-1
to me Light up the Sky and Feels so good are two different songs .. if im hanging out with guys I'll put on Light up the Sky but if im getting down with some chick I'll put on Feels so Good .. i actually like both songs .. it just depends on the situation ..
I saw the title, I just started to laugh, no comparison. An epic classic versus poppy fluff. It's funny because so many Hagardzombies defend it like there is no tomorrow. Poor suckers. 0U812, people say its clever, but it was taken from Cheech and Chong. If only they would have kept "Down In Flames" instead of using that music for "You're No Good", it would have been that much better. I always thought "Mine All Mine" was the heaviest track on the album, which is saying something. When It's Love, truly a Mastersh!t in ballessness. F#cK I hate that song and I love EVH. Cabo Wabo, Hagar wouldn't have the fortune if it weren't for it being on this album. Even the VH brothers didn't want to be associated with that song that only benefitted Spammy, forcing him to get his tattoo during 2004 so he could still promote his cabo brand. F' him. I can't talk anymore. You hit the nail on head again, truly a depressing time to be a VH fan.
Personally, I like Van Halen and I like Van Hagar. But I think it's kinda strange whenever I hear anyone prefers Van Hagar. I like all Van Halen and Van Hagar, But Diamond Dave is unbeatable. He's irreplaceable. OU812 is a great 8/10 album for me. But Van Halen II isn't anything like OU812. Van Halen II is a masterpiece of hard rock that influenced everyone and OU812 is just kinda Van Hagar. It's just kinda there.
I'd put my track by track, but it'd just be the track listing of Van Halen II, a perfect album along with the debut, Women and Children First, and Fair Warning. I actually quite like the Sammy stuff, but OU812 is the worst album they did with him
I thought some of the music on OU812 would have sounded great if Dave sang on it and it had that classic brown sound with Templeman producing. Like you said, if you stripped away the keyboards on Mine all Mine and it was beefed up, it would have been a much better song. AFU and Source of Infection musically is pretty rockin and with better production I could hear Dave injecting his stamp on them. OU812 just sounds weak and dated.
They went from a party band to elevator music within the space of two albums. 5150 was a decent album. Loved the sound of Eddie’s Steinberger on two of the tracks. Ou812 was a huge shock to me. Hey, I wouldn't let the Sammy shit and van Halen 3 near the classic van Halen CDs.
But, let's do this...
1. You're no good
2. Dance the night away
3. Somebody get me a doctor
4. Bottoms up
5. Out of love again
6. Light up the sky
7. Spanish fly
8. D.O.A.
9. Women in love...
10. Beautiful girls
I got the Sammy Hagar van-gina stuff for completist reasons after Eddie died. Maybe I missed the boat on van Hagar. But, it's like missing the Titanic.
Love your channel
Oh you hate one two. Me three
Funny video as always.
Hysterical ralph😅. You know how to make me laugh 😊
Light in the sky rocks
A.F.U. is my favourite VH song of all time 😂
Here is the definitive list of songs that represent the worst of Hagar’s lyrics: Good Enough, Summer Nights, Source of Infection, Black and Blue, Sucker in a 3 Piece, Spanked, In n’ Out…. I could keep going, but I would be listing almost 40 songs across 4 albums that have aged so badly. Not only was DLR the fun in Van Halen, but he was the brains as well.
What about Up For Breakfast ? The worst of them all.
I like the Hagar era, especially Balance… but none of it beats any DLR era record, even A Different Kind of Truth.
Roth is VH !!!
The best hagar ever did was the Montrose debut album love that album but he was nowhere that level again.
I'm not a Van Hagar hater but VH2 is gonna crush OU812, I'm sure lol
Mine All Mine
Dance The Night Away
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Bottoms Up
Outta Love Again
Light Up the Sky
Spanish Fly
DOA
Women In Love
Beautiful Girls
VH2 wins 9-1
Finish what you started n black n blue are two favorites mainly cause of EVH
Holy shit, I forgot how bad those lyrics were 😂 Sucker in a 4 piece band for sure! 😝
to me Light up the Sky and Feels so good are two different songs .. if im hanging out with guys I'll put on Light up the Sky but if im getting down with some chick I'll put on Feels so Good .. i actually like both songs .. it just depends on the situation ..
Could you please have that missing piece of baseboard installed for the next video? My OCD was screaming up my lunch pail.
Where Have All the Good Times Gone was based off Bowie's version.
I'd put my track by track, but it'd just be the track listing of Van Halen II, a perfect album along with the debut, Women and Children First, and Fair Warning. I actually quite like the Sammy stuff, but OU812 is the worst album they did with him
Worst title too.
Lmao! I already know the results before i watch..
Agreed Ralph 😊
I thought some of the music on OU812 would have sounded great if Dave sang on it and it had that classic brown sound with Templeman producing. Like you said, if you stripped away the keyboards on Mine all Mine and it was beefed up, it would have been a much better song. AFU and Source of Infection musically is pretty rockin and with better production I could hear Dave injecting his stamp on them. OU812 just sounds weak and dated.
Mine all mine and AFU were ideas around in the DLR days.
Until 2015 I loved the VH Sammy era, but nowadays I have a better vision of the whole thing, and I really do think that 90% of It sucks hard
Shit Doc, I can't even remember last week.
Funny man 😂😂😂 8:29
Van Gina was not only Hagar's fault... what about Cherone?? another train wreck...
Love original Van Halen! Ramen noodle head is ok but not half as good.
