Periphery changed my perception of what dropped tunings could be. I love using and coming across all these beautiful chord voicings when I’m playing now.
Man oh man, I just love the phrasing and timing of his solos, melodic and almost classic rock/familiar, yet completely fresh and new sounding. I've been playing guitar for 50 years now, and one of the best parts of my week is when I come her to be inspired. ❤ 👍
I watched this video a month ago & was so inspired by it (Joey is inspiring AF). It totally changed my playing. I blocked off one of my older floyd trem guitars and had a field day with it in drop D playing these super melodic chords and riffs! Thx Joey 🍻
I use it to play country or blues tunes. It works nicely to have that low D. For instance, I did a trio band arrangement of “Mama Tried” where I used the low D sparingly at the end of the solo. It really made it feel big before going back to the vocal. The Helmet chords are super cool, too.
Great. That's what is needed. One of my most favorite tunings. Sure we all know great masterpieces like "Black hole sun", "Walking in my shoes", "Right in two" showing what Drop D is capable for, but you are right, very often people really perceive it as an instrument for power cords only. Thank you for showing how melodic it can be. It would be great to watch similar story about Open C. "Burden in my hand" sounds incredibly, I got to improvise a bit in this tuning, but felt somehow limited... rather by my skills and knowledge.
This is what I needed to see a wider picture. This is truly one of the best tutorials in Drop D tuning. Hands down key concepts to expand your knowledge in both melodic and rhythm. Thank you!🤘😎🎸
I was just looking down here to see if anyone caught that. The video has some great ideas. I have a guitar in drop D I would like to play a little more and this video is going to help.
yeah sorry guys, I was mistaken on that one. It's hard to keep it all together while you're filming, having lights on you, talking in a language that isn't your native language, etc.. thanks for correcting it in a friendly way!
this video was basically just to show off soloing skills, very little to do with Drop D. Good player, but he shouldn't have tricked ppl into watching it for the literal one trick that we all know already.
Doing major and minor chords with the third off the g string the opposite way to doing off the d is a great way to add openness too. So like third fret on the D and second fret on the G
If you play powerchords in regular shape in Drop-D you can really easily transform your single-finger powerchords into minor & major diads. Easy powerchords + add9 chords + maj/min. diads = You can even further + pretty easily do dark melodic stuff in Drop-D. Personally I play a lot of Drop-C actually, which is pretty much the same, just everything's another whole-step lower. That stuff here sounds even darker but also even more mystical / mythical in Drop-C. Just make sure to use thuicker strings, than normal, when trying Drop-C, otherwise, your strings will be too slinky to sound good. ^^
I have been playing exclusively in Dropped D for decades. I started in heavier genres and have ended up using it across many styles. It is so useful as a melodic tool. There's a couple of voicings you show here that I need to expand my tool kit to include. Great video, thanks!
Great video and playing man, especially on those solo sections. Good ideas to work on and yeah, I was also using drop D just for the riffs mostly and not so much as a base. But I think, in my noob opinion, that you should use more of that D string in those arrangements that you do as it sounds great already but with your style of playing it could sound much more awesome, because you would use that D string more in the main stuff and not just in the loop.
Beautiful playing man! I use drop D a lot for those heavy style riffs, but incorporate a lot of melody and I guess, kind of unconventional sounding drop D riffs. But I occasionally play around on acoustic and utilise the droning aspect of it. Dropping the high E string to D also, gives an even darker sounding drone and opens up new chord options.
The way I think of drop d is like an open tuning coz it almost is, I mean you have a (kind of) Dmaj/min open tuning, which sounds neutral (maj/min means it has a major and minor in it, so it’s neutral bc of them canceling each other out) but still is an open tuning if you think about it. I say thinking of it like this can make some very interesting riffs and unique songwriting capabilities that you could explore, so have fun with this if you want. You’re even using this idea in your video as you create really large chords that are reminiscent of an open tuning. So I see that great minds think alike, whether realized or not
Very interesting! You got a new follower! Your signature guitar is amazing! Love the 1 pickup config too 😊 I have a T style guitar made bespoke by an Irish luthier with a single Seymour Duncan JB in it.
Homie says “you’re playing it wrong” and then not once did he even play the low e in the opening solo. 😂 SAME SHIT CAN BE PLAYED IN STANDARD GOOBER. 😂😂
Love drop D. Lamb of God and Psycroptic come to mind. But I love this style of playing too, and now I’m just a meathead metal player trying to learn how to slow down and play some beautiful melodies.
If I actually knew chords this would be more informative. But my natural curiosity already uses the D tuning as a drone sound note… you also have a lot of chord structures that are different from standard. That’s why you also try tunings like DADGAD and what not. Coldplay also has some weird tunings that can play really hard or melodic.
4:01 Minor second? of what? You mean major second? It's Bb A C. I'd say Bbmaj9 considering where you just came from. The only way I can get a b2 out of any of it is to say Am(b2)/Bb which seems not like a way one would analyze it.
Yes I was mistaken there. Only realized it after uploading. Sometimes it’s hard to keep it all together while you’re speaking, sitting in front of a camera, lights on, etc.
Beautiful sound, great shot video. Dsus4-Bb∆7/Bb∆9 Gonna hear some Overlong up in them 9ths. Instant Emo grungy EZPZ! Always fun playing acrosst a southpaw:-)
I'm pretty sure every single Alice song is in eb standard and not drop d. Ever Alice song I've ever learned is standard tuning 1/2 step down. If anyone has any corrections please let me know. I'm only trying to share and gain knowledge. Not trying to be a prude :)
That guitar is dope. I like the junior with the humbucker thing it’s got goin on. What is it?
It is my signature model by Nik Huber, called the Nik Huber JJ. I'm going to do a video about it soon.
@@joeyjooones can't wait
"You're doing it wrong" then never plays the open D. Aaaahh I get it now
😂😂
pretty much what I saw too lol
I thought exactly the same

Adam Jones knows how to use Drop D
god damn he does
Great example is Damn Good by David Lee Roth with Steve Vai on the Skyscraper album.
"sound beautiful and dark" plays like Jerry Cantrell. I approve

❤️ you’re welcome.
Reminds me of Mark Tremonti. He loves using drop tunings and alternate tunings and makes songs that are both heavy and beautiful
I remember discovering Drop D on a whim when I was young… “HOLY SH!T… HELMET!”
They was highly schooled in jazz. Love Helmet.
@ Page is a genius!
I use it to play country or blues tunes. It works nicely to have that low D. For instance, I did a trio band arrangement of “Mama Tried” where I used the low D sparingly at the end of the solo. It really made it feel big before going back to the vocal.
The Helmet chords are super cool, too.
Nice tips man!
More Drop D tunes! please
Lamb of god wrote some of their best songs in just regular old drop D tuning and managed to still sound oh so heavy
Great. That's what is needed. One of my most favorite tunings. Sure we all know great masterpieces like "Black hole sun", "Walking in my shoes", "Right in two" showing what Drop D is capable for, but you are right, very often people really perceive it as an instrument for power cords only.

No we are not using it wrong. There are just difterent ways of using it and one of the very best is for heavy riffs like Spoonman.
Agree. Love spoonman.
Fuck yeah!!!
Thats what he said
Nope. After seeing this video… I’m using it wrong.
I'm together with your plan.
I'm getting these nice Mastodon vibes, specifically speaking of Stargasm. Beautiful song, heavy meaning. Perfect for this type of tone
This is what I needed to see a wider picture. This is truly one of the best tutorials in Drop D tuning. Hands down key concepts to expand your knowledge in both melodic and rhythm. Thank you!🤘😎🎸
Make a complete song out of that riff!!!! Thats aweaome
He meant Bb major as 2nd chord not B 🤛. Great video
I was just looking down here to see if anyone caught that. The video has some great ideas. I have a guitar in drop D I would like to play a little more and this video is going to help.
Glad I wasn't going crazy ❤

@ It’s all good. We are all human.
I got into drop with Everlong. This spiralled quickly when I realised that lots of bands were using this.
I love that couch man!
thanks. Been getting a lot of compliments for that one. And yes, it is crazy comfy. You sink right into that thing. :D
@@joeyjooones haha awesome. Otherwise your room looks super cool aesthetically... and your sound & playing is killer. Keep it up mah man
@RabeaMassaad uses drop D in a melodic sense, does it masterfully.
Killer playing....fantastic tone....great lesson all the way around!!! So inspiring. Thank you!!!
So beautiful, love it! I can’t wait to get noodling with it! Thanks!!!
00:28-1:17 made me subscribe... That was EPIC! Reminded me a lot of Mark Tremonti 👌
This reminds me of Stephen Wilson Jr. Except he plays a nylon string.
Great tone and great lead!!!
This video should have been titled "3 Steps to sound like Creed."
Love the lick and the tone. Very satisfying tone.
Awesome lesson, thanks for the inspiration!
This sounds really good. I dig it , man .
Beautiful playing man!
very beautiful tone, chords, melodies etc. Nice tips man, thank you!!!
This was very inspirational! Thanks!
Artist to artist. I think you and I would really understand each other musically 👌
Grande Joey,greetings from Mexico
Great lesson Joey thanks for sharing!
Subscribed in the first 30 seconds! Well done! I'm going to use these techniques!
Great solo Mark!!
D Lydian is so beautiful
this was giving porcupine tree vibes tbh & i'm so here for it
Drop D is great. You can mix the heavy crunchy drone with the melodic stuff. I don’t try to play anymore, but I sure like to listen.
Finally somebody who explains to the others, what I've been doing all these years.
this video was basically just to show off soloing skills, very little to do with Drop D. Good player, but he shouldn't have tricked ppl into watching it for the literal one trick that we all know already.
awesome lesson!
Sounding sick Joey! Thanks for sharing.
Grunge and alt rock bands in the early 90s nailed drop D: Soundgarden, Kings X etc.
Doing major and minor chords with the third off the g string the opposite way to doing off the d is a great way to add openness too.
So like third fret on the D and second fret on the G
Killer solo dude
Fellow lefty, and a huge 1-pickup fan. That’s hands down one of the most beautiful lefty guitars I’ve ever seen and heard.

Simply amazing! ❤ I love this tuning for these reasons. Super!
Cool lesson cobba 👍
You play really well. I am surprised this is the 1st time I have ever heard you.
Very cool sounds bro ..
I love it !

Joey can you go over your tone setup? One of the most impactful things when learning new music is capturing the essence of the sound
Totally. I’m actually in the middle of creating a tone course where I go over everything in my chain and lots of tricks how to improve your sound.
Great playing. 👍
Soul ripping, amazzziing video. Best way to use drop d I've ever seen.
I use it for my nylon guitar as Spanish guitar style options filler in my song tracks. As well as just rooted music tuning.
Good video dude. Ive always thought drop d had lots of potential outside of chugs

Well pardon my French here, but that intro was fuckin bad ass!

Psycroptic uses drop D as good as it gets
Laurindo Almeida's version of "The Lamp is Low" is in dropped-D.
1 minute into the first video ive ever seen of you and im hitting subscribe... good shit !
Sounds a lot like this one guy from back in the day on RUclips. Francisco Mesa, mainly the track Goodbye and Departure of a Soul
Check out the band a wilhelm scream they use drop d alot and have really amazing riffs. Very melodic
Very interesting! You got a new follower! Your signature guitar is amazing! Love the 1 pickup config too 😊 I have a T style guitar made bespoke by an Irish luthier with a single Seymour Duncan JB in it.
Great playing Joey. Those faces though. 😂
That riff demo with the lead reminds me a lot of porcupine tree for some reason … like blackest eyes mid section or shallow mid section
Country boy can survive
⚡️Sounds like Nick Johnston⚡️
The faces comes with the tuning
Inversions are a necessary tool to use alternate tunings correctly..
Homie says “you’re playing it wrong” and then not once did he even play the low e in the opening solo. 😂 SAME SHIT CAN BE PLAYED IN STANDARD GOOBER. 😂😂
Yep! That's cool! You've got a new subscriber! 🤘😎
Awesome video just wish when you looped and did the solos that you threw in what scales were being targeted
excellent , and really interesting

Check out King's X for melodic drop D goodness
..how about double drop d like Neil Young.. both e's low and high down to d..that's some addictive tuning..! 😅
Definitely got some Andy Timmons vibes in there❤. Your music is so satisfying to listen to
And now I'm off to start an Alice in Chains/Soundgarden cover band. Thanks

omg this sounds like oficina g3 for me
I just got an fr fr speaker and I cant get those tones. Frustrating for sure.
Released a new video about guitar tone. Check it out. Might help.
Capricho Arabe is a prime example that drop D is a lot more than just easy power chords.
Nice sound. Getting some strong Andy Timmons vibes
Most of us figured that out within a few hours of tuning that top chord
Damn, you got my attention 😂
Okay, I had no idea that's how "most people" thought of drop D. Tbh, I heard of drop D before I heard of power chords, so...
Nice! so i guess the key is: try to find your way in D major. The heavy riffs tend to be mostly in D minor.
bro what is that guitar!?!?!? 😍😍😍
