Tethering Without iTunes - Via USB to Windows

- A tutorial and demonstration of setting up your PC for tethering to your iPhone via USB. This can be extremely useful as a backup when your internet goes down as the phone stays charging via the USB and other devices can still connect via wifi. Watch out for data usage though :-)

I recently set this up after BT completely disconnected my landline in error and left it like that for 5 days. That's a long time for someone like me who uses the internet every day. Fortunately, I have excellent 4G coverage and my iPhone basically became the gateway for all devices in the apartment. It works great and doesn't require iTunes. I don't mind having iTunes on my Mac funnily enough but I don't want it on my desktop.
This is being set up on a Windows 10 64-bit machine but it will work with Windows XP upwards.

I noticed a few comments about the fact that "you don't have internet so how can you do this." Consider this a proactive way of being set up and ready for next time you're internet is down. Also, there are a number of ways around the problem such as using your phone as a hotspot connected to a device that *does* have Wifi (such as laptop) and then transferring files to the desktop needing USB based access. Use a connection somewhere else to save down the files to a card or USB stick. It's not impossible. :-)
This is always the case with network connection driver issues. There will never be a way to solve it without having internet another way or using a USB stick to another computer and copy the driver over. Still a great video on how to do it without having to download iTunes, Thanks :)

Im downloading files via bluetooth conection :D hope usb conection works faster . it took me ~20 min to download them.

It worked just as TDCat said. I had the same issue Toxic, then just connected to Wifi first to download the files then went to usb. Perfect.

Just wanted to say that this still works in 2021 just fine, however I do have some tips for anyone trying this. I had to disable my other internet connection even though it didn't work, and I had to have my iphone plugged in via usb while installing the programs. This caused my computer to recognize the connection and use it, but if I restarted or turned off my pc I had to use the programs to uninstall and reinstall themselves before I could use the hotspot. Hopefully this helps anyone else out there and thank you Cattech for the video...saved my weekend.
You should note that it apparently only works with the original cable. I used a offbrand one from Amazon and scratched my head for 15 mins why it wouldn't pop up as a connection device. Original cable worked immediately.
It doesn't work with a win10 computer without any internet connection ... Installed both files but iPhone (iOS15) always only connects to sharing pictures, no chance to activate personal hotspot and a network interface on the PC ...
You made my day: Clear instructions, works great with Windows 7 with an old iPhone 5 with iOS 10.3.3 without iTunes.

Hey there, you got the files wrong, in your x64 download AppleApplicationSupport was in 32bit.
Can someone link the x64 bit PLEASE.
Hello, I realized the same thing. I installed the two programs anyway and it worked fine (despite the install saying “32bit” and my system being 64bit).

Dude, IT WORKED!! THANK YOU!! .... I ran out of space and had to get rid of iTunes, and found my phone not tethering anymore. I use my phone for internet daily! Thanks for the help when other websites failed!
Thanks for the lesson. I was able to update my Windows 10 Home 64-bit system to use my iPhone as a USB hotspot with no iTunes bloat. I needed a 3rd party archive tool to extract the files I needed. In the current iTunes msi, the relevant files were AppleApplicationSupport64 and AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464 . I can't explain that second file name, but it worked. The other three solo files mentioned in the video don't seem necessary.

You are a FREAKING LIFE SAVER. I could not get one of my customer's USB Tethering working and he was on the verge of returning his new Windows PC. This fix solved it.

I had the tethering working until i got rid of iTunes. I made it a mission to tether without iTunes and I spent an hour messing around with drivers. You just rescued me from 1 hour of pain

Absolute Gold, based on your information in this very informative video, I downloaded the latest ITunes package, extracted the two required files and installed into the latest win10 and everything works as you said.

Yep, I didn’t know or forgot that iTunes was my tether capability.
I stopped during a update and porked iTunes. Took me a while to find this video. VERY helpful. Got the files from my neighbors pc and brought to my house on sd card.

Thank you very much , its working in my windows 10 laptop 64 bit , I just install the 64 bit exe (2 files) inside the zip file and connected the iphone then enable the hotspot.

as today 23june 2020 the files in the description don’t work anymore
this is due to microsoft constantly updating windows therefor apple updates itunes driver
all you need to do as the guy mention download the last itunes.exe from apple extract the files from it with winter or other similar software the install the 2 described file from this guide and it will work / will work again
keep doing it when it stops working with the newest file from the future installer and that’s it

Works on Windows 10x64 without rebooting. Might need to reconnect the USB and enable "trust" and put in your iOS device password to confirm.
As for not having internet, you can see your files via USB if you've downloaded the installers to your Downloads folder in the Files app on iOS. It may pause for a few minutes when you tap on "Open In..." but be patient.

Thanks for this excellent solution. I don't have a landilne/cable connection and use personal hotspot on an iphone to access the web on my laptop. However, when i connected the iphone to my windows 10 pc it didn't work. Even when i installed itunes (by transferring it from the laptop to the pc on a usb stick) it said that extra software was needed in order to properly install the iphone . I downloaded the zip file on the laptop, transferred it to the pc and installed the 2 main files. I was slightly perturbed that one of the files said it was 32 bit (I'd downloaded the 64 bit version) but went ahead anyway.....It worked! I cannot thank you enoigh.

I'm on Windows 11. Yesterday (1st June 2022) I had an update of iTunes and suddently the USB tethering stopped working. I tried to uninstall itunes, reinstall it, update the Ios on the Iphone ... nothing helped. It worked on other computers where I still didn't update itunes but on the one where I updated itunes - it was game over. I found your video, downloaded the files ... and here we go, everything works again.

I had trouble with Windows 10, but thanks to some other comments I was able to work through it:
Use the iTunes installer for the needed files: discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6562#versions
Download and install WinRAR in order to extract the files: www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0
Once the programs are downloaded: Right click on the iTunes folder and select 'Extract here". If iTunes in on your desktop, the files should extract to 'here' ...which would be the desktop
Install the two files recommended in the video, but also install the 'Apple mobile device support' file
Restart the computer
Connect the phone to the computer, and turn on the Personal Hotspot
Follow the directions in the video from there
I had a problem enabling ethernet after disabling it for the test. I don't recommend disabling the ethernet device. I had to enable it in device manage but the name of the device kept disappearing after I would plug in the USB ethernet adapter, so I had to be a bit quick with the right click, then enable.
Funilly it didn't work when installing the x64 version of the iTunes here (the non Windows Store one), but once I installed one of the installers you provided, it worked!! Apple is full of these retro-support bullshit, so thank you for providing the files in a non-shady way!! (both installers are signed by apple tho so nothing was modified).

Pretty standard nowadays. Not so if you have a Wifi hotspot nearby and no $5 wifi dongle on your PC. Than suddenly you notice you can't easily use it the same way. How easy would it be if you could bridge the wifi picked up by the iPhone and use it with an USB cable to tether a PC.

Nope. As soon as I turn on hotspot and connect my iPhone to the pc. Nothing happens... it don’t recognize the phone as an adapter.

So this was working perfectly for me. It was using my phone's network and not the hotspot which I was hoping it would. Recently I've run into an issue where my laptop is using the personal hotspot when tethered VIA USB though. Prior to this, it was not. Now my internet is throttled again based on hotspot usage. The phone itself is having fast speeds, but when I test the laptops it is operating under the hotspots throttled speeds.

Something may have changed with the new iOS. I'm able to now detect my iPhone as Ethernet, but it has no internet connection. So sad. Even when tethering on WiFi, I can't get my internet to work on PC. Thanks for the guide though.

Interestingly i downloaded the latest itunes installer and it does not include the AppleApplicationSupport.msi file. Not sure if it's needed anymore, i only used your x64 tethering pack.
