    Hi Harriet! The key here is that you and Mauro have made a *choice*. So few of us actually do that, but instead assume that the way everyone does it is the only way. You've made it work in a most beautiful way that suits yourselves and serves the planet.

    50 years ago now, my thesis in Architectural school was on How to design and build a self sustainable city. Your work to make a life full of living in harmony with your environment ,off grid ,peaks to my dreams so long ago. You put a long awaited smile on my face. I've lived long enough to see my dreams come true, at least on a scale of one growing family in Spain. Thanks! You two, soon to be three, are blessed.

    In the mid-70s I lived off the grid in an old ghost copper mine town art commune/abandoned laundry on the Mexican border. LOL. "Solar" wasn't even a word then. Oh, so many things I see from then with what you're doing now.
    This is just so very intriguing and really, really interesting. We know you guys are smart, well-prepared, and able but it really was nice kind of peeking behind the curtain. Y'all are going to be just fine. LOL. Better than fine! Much ❤ and 👍and 🙌🙌🙌.

    There should be mini wind turbines either on the market now or very soon. I have seen at least one that is "plug and play" meaning it's already set for household current, no converter/inverter needed, but that here in North America. You've got sufficient wind, so it's either possible now or likely very soon.
    A lot of people have LED light bulbs, far less power use. It's amazing how much things have changed.
    Enjoy your trip, eat, rest, dance, and have fun.

    I love the way you show your choices, and I way you make things work for you. When I was in my early twenties I used to live in squatted buildings in Amsterdam. Mostly much more primitive than the average person. I loved choosing my own direction and sharing a livestyle with others. It shaped my life and the way I do things still, even 40 years later. Seeing what you do sparks something similar in me. That’s also why I really love making the little set of clothes for your baby. ❤

    Your videos give me so much hope. We have just moved to a village in Hungary after spending most of our lives in the capital. It is what we dreamed of and still the struggles of reality sometimes make me question if we are able to do this or if we are cut out for something like this. Whenever I hear you talk, and see you do your chores, I get hopeful. 2 things I would love to learn more about: how are you able to grow such amazing salads and greens (mine never turn out) and how exactly the composting side of the toilet works (how long does it take until you can use the waste as compost). Wishing you the best and thank you for the videos!:)

      Thank you! Hahha I would also love to know why lettuce seems to grow so well here. Maybe because we don't have many slugs/snails?
      The compost toilet always raises a lot of questions! Maybe I need a dedicated video. We compost our waste for 1 year, but ensuring it gets hot to kill microbes. A lot of sources recommended 3 years. There's a great book called Humanure all about it!

    In terms of pumping the water without using electricity, have you ever heard of a hydraulic ram pump? It’s 100% mechanical and you wouldn’t have to waste any water to do it. My first thought was that maybe you could utilize the falling water for hydroelectric power, but I’m not certain your flow is enough

    • @LittleSpanishFarmstead
      @LittleSpanishFarmstead  Год назад

      Yes we know about them but we can't afford the loss in flow to achieve the height lift we are looking for, in this situation

    • @LittleSpanishFarmstead
      @LittleSpanishFarmstead  3 месяца назад

      @@stephencrowther524 hydraulic ram pumps don’t move 100% of the water that moves through them, more like 10%. They require a high volume water source to work efficiently. That’s exactly the opposite to what we have, we have a weak and constant flow. I haven’t calculated the numbers but I can say for sure it wouldn’t work for us, sadly.

    I was at an off grid settlement in Spain last week. Unfortunately....as with so many other off-grid communities they aren't really off grid. For instance, they used gas cannisters....so they need to grid to fill up the cannisters and then yes...they're off grid...but they depend on the grid all the same.

    • @LittleSpanishFarmstead
      @LittleSpanishFarmstead  Год назад

      off-grid just means a building or situation which is not connected to mains grid services. It doesn't mean rejecting all modern conveniences, refusing to use roads etc, eat food cooked in restaurants using grid services etc etc.

    • @Paul-vm9sz
      @Paul-vm9sz Год назад

      @@LittleSpanishFarmstead No I understand that. I think you misunderstood. I can have gas hooked up to my home and I am on-grid. I can use gas containers and they call this “off-grid”. This isn’t off-grid though because you have filled up the gas containers from the grid for a very short time and then some people falsely claim this is “off-grid” when they use it. It isn’t though….you’ve just stored on grid gas into a container.
      To be honest….the same goes for solar panels.

    In my previous comment about your idea of putting a water source on top of the hill and pumping the water up there, I would prefer myself a pressure tank added to exactly what you already have and everything would be great and solve your issue very simple and cheaper not having to add all the water storage and pipes up the hill. Also as you point out if the plastic pipes are not buried, the water would be to hot to bear when it came thru the pipes at the heat of the day.

    • @LittleSpanishFarmstead
      @LittleSpanishFarmstead  Год назад

      Yes we're thinking of this option too, but we still need water up the hill to store a large amount for irrigation purposes. So would have to be 2 separate systems. Not sure if it's better to maintain 2 systems or just the 1, but it's a good idea.

    Das aufgewickelte weisse Kabel an der Wand, ist das von der Solaranlage ?

    Das Loch in der Wand hätte der Elektriker aber zumachen können...
    Habt ihr jetzt noch mehr Land gekauft ??
    70 € im Monat ist natürlich nicht viel, ...wenn man das Geld im Monat hat.
    Wieviel verdient ihr denn mit den RUclips Filmen, wenn ich fragen darf .. mein Sohn sagte mit ab 1000 Abonnenten gibt es 1 - 5 € / 1000 Klicks.
    Das Küchenfenster würde ich nicht verkleinern, ... wenn du in der Küche stehst und der Nachwuchs läuft draussen herum wirst du froh sein ihn im Blick zu haben..
    Macht ihr eure Wasersammelbecken noch Kindersicher ??

    There is this channel that I started watching in 2020. She 100 percent cooks and preserves over a fire. You could get some awesome ideas for your setup from watching that channel. It is basically Old World but at the top of efficiency for off-grid. IT is also ASMR lol. The animals are precious. But many many many off-grid ideas. www.youtube.com/@country_life_vlog/videos

    wow, this is really low life costs. i love to do such calculations, so thank you for showing your costs... not many people do that, and when i see people doing permaculture stuff i often wonder how much money one has to afford to live that way.
    don't you have to have a health insurance?

      Yeah, health care is public in Spain, we pay for it with our taxes every month.

      I know about them but it's not a good solution in our case as we cant afford to sacrifice the flow necessary to get the lift needed
