I worked at the Toledo Zoo for three and a half years, and I got to see the museum the first day it opened. It was definitely an improvement over what was in there before. The lobby was empty most of the time, the only animals were small amphibians and arthropods, and the second floor had a bunch of offices. This renovation was a definite improvement.
I am so happy people enjoy this building. I'm a a volunteer at this zoo and I get to see all this almost everyday so I am always happy to hear other people enjoy it as much as I do. If enyone has any questions about the zoo I will be happy to answer.
I've spent almost a whole lifetime hear at this very zoo as a devoted member. Happy to see you covering our zoo on the channel once more. I've photographed just about all the species here at one time or another. Though I sadly didn't see the sea krait on my last visit to the zoo.
What a great episode of zoo tours! I live very far away, if I am able to come here I WOULD BE THE HAPPIEST PERSON ALIVE ON THAT DAY! 2nd would be my brother LOL
I visited Toledo with my kids this past summer, and this zoo was a big reason why. We weren't disappointed: compared to the Buffalo Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world, Toledo's is easily a world-class attraction. Each of its houses are worth hours of exploration, but that Museum of Science blew us away. Much like yourself, we spent nearly four hours wandering through it, with a new wonder around every corner.
Super happy to have stumbled on this!!!!! I was born in Toledo Hospital and raised my family in Toledo, but moved to Florida 10 years ago. We were always members of Toledo Art Museum and the zoo. We've traveled the world and have found few equals to both fantastic institutions.
I've been going to this zoo since I was a child as it's my local zoo. I'd love for you to go over their updated aquarium as well, it's truly stunning! Staying nearly the same on the outside but, if I recall correctly, approximately tripling the gallons of water on the inside, it's now truly a great sight. I only wish when I was younger I had had the ability like kids do know to take photos of the old one to compare.
What a great tour! This is an amazing concept, I wish other zoos would emulate this. Also the contast between the historical building, the glass enclosures, the biotopes, the lighting, was just amazing! I think this is one of my favourite exhibits you've shown 👏👏👏
Having a blue banded sea Krait is amazing and a good testament to the skill of the herpetology care team on staff. Also I must say this who facility branch they have built is downright inspirational. I would love to see this kind of museum and indoor animal house hybrid facility more In fact one facility that I’ve been to in the states that has a very similar feel to this was the Virginia living museum. While a admittedly smaller facility it had amazing habitats for their animals and similarly offered both the interactive educational experience of a museum and the first hand inspirational experience that seeing love animals at a zoo or aquarium offers.
Wow this place is fantastic! Such an original and fun way of displaying all these herps and fish. The sculptures and dioramas look really good as well.
I just found your channel and I love it!! You should try to visit Virginia Beach and see their aquarium sometime, they have a great selection of locally found animals. And I believe they're doing renovations on their second building that talks about the wetlands and marshes of the area. Plus the Virginia zoo is nearby in Norfolk, about 30 minutes away.
Hey! I am new to this channel but only 2 minutes in to the video and I already liked and subscribed! I am a former volunteer at the Calgary Zoo in Alberta and I can honestly say...I wish I was at the zoo in this video than there. Although it was fun, I was turned down for a job at the zoo 7 times and then resigned when the vaccine mandate came into play. Overall I had a wonderful time at the zoo and am always overly excited to view tropical, prehistoric, and other kinds of landscapes and wildlife. I am truly enjoying this video and I will be sure to watch more!
Seeing that pterosaur makes me want a video about the reptile house Also I’d recognize that Smilodon from the thumbnail, it’s a render from Jurassic World Alive
I spent 4 years as an invert keeper..great collection on here, taxonomic group that isneglected in zoos. And the robber crabs are cool..but not always easiest display species..our zoo had them.. problem is they moult underground for long periods of time..so empty enclosure. Do a lot with native reptile conservation too . including venomous..and venomous snakes neglected in UK zoos. Great list here especially death adder. We used interactive displays with themes..hats off to toledo zoo☺️
My mom was actually bitten by a Black Widow, but because they're so rare we thought it was a brown recluse bite. When she finally realized the pain in her arm wasn't going away and in fact getting worse, we went to the hospital and they were like "yep that's a black widow"
As somebody who works there, don't worry! Theres not a huge risk of guests stepping on the frogs. Theres usually 2 teen volunteers near the area. One in the entrance room, and then one in the exit room. The first one usually gives out some rules about The Tropics. Mainly about just being careful of where you step and being careful as to not touch the plants. This also includes the frogs. And the one in the exit usually checks for any critters who may have wanted to become hitchhikers. But don't worry! The frogs there are safe for the most part!
I've gone to so many zoos but if you ever go to Sydney Australia they have the coolest nighthouse I've ever seen. All rare Australian nocturnal species that no US zoo really has.
Wowsers! I had no idea the Toledo Zoo has Ice Age animal displays there! Also, which zoo are you going next for Episode 108 sooner or later? Cause' if you visit the Oakland Zoo, you should visit the new California Trail attraction, featuring a gondola system, along with some abundance of bison, gray wolves, black bears, grizzly bears, jaguars, cougars, & California Condors, too. Jumping Juravenator!🐺
Just found out about your channel and am loving the content. Out of curiosity any plans to make your way up to Alaska's Sealife Center in Seward and/or The Alaska Zoo in Anchorage? The former is a dedicated cold-water aquarium/research facility dedicated to arctic aquatic animals, and the later got it's start in 1966 after a radio contest offered a man 3,000 dollars or a baby elephant and he chose the baby elephant (sadly we do not have elephants any more, turns out an Indian animal doesn't do well in a place that can reach -15 degrees in the winters).
Well, as somebody who works there, I can actually awnser this! Theres usually 2 ZooTeens ( teen volunteers ) near the area. One by or in the small entrance room, and then one in the small exit room with a huge mirror in it. As well as an educator sometimes. Theres also rules in place that the entrance teen usually gives out ( such as not touching the plants or animals ), plus theres usually staff within the mueseum or out and about, so stealing frogs from there is VERY unlikely. Also, fun fact! There are actually over 300 Dart Frogs in The Tropics! Thats the estimated number, because they have bred like rabbits in there.
As one of the ZooTeens that volunteer at this zoo I can also say we let everyone who gose though the tropics about the frogs and we know most of the times we're the frogs are on the path.
Just saying but if I was the director of this zoo I would add the Timber/Canebrake Rattlesnake, Ring Necked Spitting Cobra, common European Adder, Eastern Copperhead, Northern Cottonmouth and Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake.
They have timber rattlesnakes, red spitting cobras (naja pallida, idk if ring necked is same animal or not), Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, West African gaboon vipers, Northern Copperheads, and others.
You won't believe... As of late I have literally been wondering how such a species like the red backed salamander could ever be housed in a zoo due to it's tendency of being beneath logs and rocks most of the time, thus seldom seen otherwise.
Shy reptile and amphibian species like that especially amphibians that hide under foliage until rains can be kept fairly well in densely planted setups that have systems to imitate daily rains which encourage the animals to naturally come out and feed. Many species of frog are the same way their driven to feed and come out and about by the sound and feeling of rain.
I was looking through the Zoo map after this episode, (which was fantastic by the way), and was wondering how you would divide this zoo into episodes, as much of it consists of single species exhibits which couldn't warrant a full episode off of them alone.
Thank you!:) I've thought about this before. 1. The eagle, owl, and cassowary fits with the Aviary. 2. Penguins with the Aquarium 3. Random assortment of birds with the Primates.
The pheasantry is part of the random assortment of birds. There were no Reindeer on my last 3 visits (2 year span). Nothing lives in that valley by the Amphitheater anymore.
