    One of the most talked about zoo exhibits in the world has finally made its way on Zoo Tours. Tropic World at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo opened in phases from 1982, 83, and 84 - claiming the title as the world's first simulated indoor rainforest in a zoo, and the largest zoo building in the world! The attraction is made up of three colossal rooms representing South America, Asia, and Africa, boasting 50 foot waterfalls, 35 foot tall trees and sights you really have to see in person to believe it. However, it's size has been outweighed by its now infamous reputation - Tropic World has shown its outdated age for decades, prompting critics to dub the building as 'Tragic World'. There are still many out there that say the positives outweigh the negatives and the criticisms are exaggerated. So please enjoy this presentation of one of the world's most sensational zoo exhibits.

    So glad this is getting an update. For a rainforest, it looks very… brutalist and devoid of life. And the sheer amount of concrete is just sad. Those poor anteaters’ knuckles must get so sore from walking on that all day. I’m genuinely surprised that even in 84 they didn’t consider having sand or something down there for the animals that walk on the ground

      I agree, i am absolutely a zoo fanatic and study the AZA for a living and i think 90% of animals should have an opportunity to get outside even if it isn’t in public view at least acknowledge it’s there for them, and no flooring should be pure concrete imo and at least put pure soil with lots of plants and flora

    • @OldCountry
      @OldCountry Год назад +4

      @@OldCountrythis is why closed jungle buildings never saw the same long term popularity within accredited facilities as true indoor rainforest, indoor biome sections of larger buildings, and biodomes

    Oftentimes an exhibit is state of the art when it first opens, but decades later it is often in need of updates. I think this is the case of tropic world, but am glad to see that there is an expansion which will feature outdoor enclosures, as I think also that great apes should not be indoors year round.

    It’s a very brutalist design and sad to prevent any outside access, but those climbing structures are exceptional and probably wonderful for the animals. The space is enormous too, and they’ve provided realistic rain.
    But oh wow, those renders are so beautiful!! They will be incredible upgrades.

    Glad to comment for the first time on your channel. Top notch work, and it's only appropriate that I leave my 2 cents for what was my first zoo experience back in 93. As to any notion of Tropic World being tantamount to the iron-bar aesthetic (the one that still haunts the reputation of zoos), there's more going for that building than against it. In comparison to the likes of Omaha, Toronto, and Minnesota however, I can't say that there's any contest.
    The aforementioned are the most exemplary, and that's because of vegetation. Tropic World has always lagged in this aspect, but I can't expect the horticulture staff to repulse those cliffs the same as Omaha and Minnesota where the geography of the exhibits allows easier access than those drops in Chicago (to this day they still give me acrophobia, and that incident of the boy who fell into the gorilla pit also didn't help). The lack of species and emptiness go without saying, but that's been my sad impression of Brookfield for years with half of those 216 acres being nearly empty save for the big cats and pinnipeds. It must be said that the contrast between Chicago's pair of zoo's is night and day with the lion's share of praise going to Lincoln Park's recent streak of excellence.
    Naturally, outdoor access would make a world of difference during more pleasant months, but with only a few more wholesome and cosmetic touchups, the indoor quarters can still serve their purpose -- being so spacious and effective regardless. But the most outstanding aspect of the exhibit has always been spectacle. The zoo most certainly has the means, space, and clout to do much despite things being on the lean side, but unless you can't tell, I'm still quite fond of the place for the sake of memories. I'm not alone when I can say that it's far from imperfect, but with considerable room to grow.
    - take care, slainte chugat

    Awesome tour as always Zac, Tropic world has really gotten me intrigued.
    It may not be as lush as Omahas indoor rainforest, but I'm glad to see the animals have many ways of getting around, and in very creative ways.
    I'd definitely be up for a Brookfield trip once the expansions and renovations are done, looks like they're taking a page out of Omaha based on the concept art!
    See you in the next one!

    I always loved this exhibit as a kid, but I do understand the criticism of a lack of outdoor space. I also do think they really need to add some more animals back, I miss how full it used to feel. Asia especially has felt empty, I feel like the otters hide a ton, and the gibbons and orangutans I can only see a couple of each each time I'm there. I'm really looking forward to the expansion.

    I think the 360 gorilla view was cut in half recently had to do with Jontu's arrival, the troop's new silverback.
    This exhibit as whole was always my favorite based on how unique it is compared to the zoo's other exhibits. I am very happy about the outdoor exhibits being added and I hope the indoor exhibits do get a touch up with some greenery. I thought the zoo was doing the outdoor exhibit idea earlier until I found out it was plaza. Thanks Brookfield, that's exactly what we needed after saying goodbye to Baboon Island.

    I love Tropic World but I've realized that over the years they've gotten rid of lots of the interactive/educational wall signage that made me REALLY love it. Personally I think they should add lots and lots of tree foliage, as well as dirt, dead leaves, maybe some ferns, and of course Ant or Termite mounds to make it feel like an actual jungle. Perhaps aquatic plants as well.

      To a lot of Mega zoo fans including myself this is considered to be one of the worst Zoo Exhibits within the AZA. It's a huge concrete playground but they're making lots of changes including adding huge outdoor enclosures! Finally these animals can live happy

    • @themotions5967
      @themotions5967 Год назад

      @@OldCountrywhat’s worse is that the space provided for many of the smaller primates and the general design as far as how space is intended to be used is phenomenal.
      I would personally seek to make plans that involved removing the roof and installing a custom geeenhouse/biodome style glass top to the building, and scrapping a lot of the concrete in favor of natural flora and forest floor substrates while keeping many of the artificial trees to keep the mobility and the structure of the habitats rolling.
      This would make the inside of tropic world a actual indoor rainforest biotope and not just a rainforest building.
      The density of foliage will give a natural privacy barrier to the animals add add to available vertical space accessible to the animals
      With a more natural biotope like design with full day night cycling and real flora and fauna I think the smaller primates and smaller animals would be entirely fine within the building, the large primates could get their updated outdoor paddocks, and use the indoor area as a naturalistic indoor area for them. I would also make sure to better prioritize new indoor areas that aren’t accessible to the public.

Also, it seems like some of the larger exhibits could include other species like birds, fruit bats, turtles, tortoises and fish. Not impressed with that exhibit at all. Do they have access to outside enclosures? It just looks like an incredibly unnatural place for them. And a Spider monkey chewing on a plastic bottle is a perfect example of the current state of our planet with humans destroying it.

    Definitely not my cup of tea. 100% artificial and concrete from ground to sky with concrete skeletons trees for display. One of the worst displays I've seen. IMO it's incredible to waste so much money to make such a mess of things.
