You can use a beam clamps to hold the pulley and use a 18" crescent wrench to loosen the fan, I do it all the time. Place the beam clamps at about one o'clock and tighten on pulley, Allow the beam clamps to rotate counter clockwise and touch the thermostat housing, the fan will come loose with the tap of a hammer on the handle of the crescent wrench. Same thing to tighten, just allow the beam clamp when rotating clockwise.

It was a pia to pry out but did go back in fairly easy with silicone grease. Not sure if it's a special o ring but the dealer gets about $30 for it.
I recommend not putting the fan or shroud back on, after you're done swapping the new water pump, Fill it with coolant first and start it to check for any leaks, just incase you need to take it apart again. Once everything checks out good with no leaks put everything else back on
i use a coolant presser pump to look for leaks before ever starting any engine that had coolant in it... and i would never add coolant only water until i was sure no leaks anywhere. that's how i roll,,, coolant is like gold now. water is cheap and easy to clean up but i am a world class Mechanic that has been wrenching forever...
@@wewillsurviveone No electric fan can flow enough CFM for the Duramax, unfortunately. Also, I found out the hard to fill it and check for leaks before reinstalling the fan. The upper pipe was leaking from the thermostat housing, somehow the new O-ring got cut. Such a pain.
Great video..Thanks for sharing. I did review the 20 04 service manual for the LLY and under specifications gives the Harmonic Balancer bolt toque of 74 ft pds the on the first pull then turn bolt an additional 90* ( ref service manual 2 of 5 , page 6-1159 )
I went in blind on the duramax and took me a week to finish. Had to buy a 3/4 inch breaker bar and 36mm 1/2 inch socket and had to wait for the flywheel lock to arrive in the mail. The work was easy but waiting for one part while I had all the bolts off except for the one behind the crank pulley was annoying.
Ok…broken 2 breaker bars trying to break loose the balancer nut. Any tips greatly appreciated. Your video is spot on w everything so far. Just can’t get past this nut. PB blaster, heat, long cheater bar all tried.
Removing that fan is pretty easy if you use an Air hammer with a veritable trigger and a long blunt chisel bit in it. The vibration of the air hammer makes even the most stubborn ones just walk right off. No need to blast it with full power. Just about one third to one half throttle is plenty.
Nice job. Be aware it is dangerous to use a click-type torque wrench on aluminum. You may end up with more than one click as the aluminum cracks! This happened to me years ago before I knew better. Best to use the "needle-type" torque wrench that gradually increases torque.
Hey dude! Can this be done on an engine out of the truck, with the harmonic balancer still on? I am swapping engines on my truck and wanted to do this for preventative maintenance while it’s out. I have no flywheel or flex plate on it (my truck is manual so I pulled and sold the flex plate) so wondering if I can do this out of the truck, and without pulling the balancer. 🤟🏼keep up the amazing work I go to all your videos for any work I’m about to do I don’t even mess with other channels lol.

I'd say it's worth the time to pull studs on back of pump housing for pipe to oil cooler. It's only burned me once but the pipe coming out of the oil cooler by filter can be a nightmare to get back in place without leaks. A 1/4 drive E25 socket I believe gets right in there.
Keep it up great video? What do u think about keying the crank? I have an lbz and the water pump failed. Literally in the process of replacing. What’s your thoughts red dmax store water pump or Danville? Thanks stay blessed
I changed o-ring on the top of the crossover pipe bc other one was flat and I only found a thicker one and worried was gonna be to thick I went down size and stretched it over top pipe in hopes it would think the o-ring so to speak. I don't feel it sticking out from pushing it up in there but the bottom is not lining up with the holes at top of water pump bc it hits the top like the pipe needs to be pushed in more to thermo housing but I'm unable to get that extra 1/8 to 1/4 that I need. Could o-ring be the issue or got any tips? Yes I did lube the o-ring b4 putting it on pipe and then b4 pushing in top half
Released the tension on the belt and finally pulled off the harmonic balancer but I can’t find the key and even swept with a extended magnet . Let’s see if tomorrow morning that I can find it . I’m hearing if you have a performance truck with tune it can damage your water pump due to the increased horse power it has now ….. again my lml pushing out maybe close 500 hp or so … any advise would help🙏🏻
One thing you should mention is that the harmonic balancer bolt is one time use so it should be replaced. Also the fan clutch wrench is like $20 or the one from merchant automotive is $35. Much better than the pry bar.
Use a lot of dielectric grease on it. It's tricky for sure, I cut through my first O ring. From what I could find, dealer only O ring. My kit O rings looked slightly different and didn't want to take the chance of it leaking after all that work.
Hey brother so my wife's duramax has an issue. The harmonic balancer bolt has come loose and the washer that's between it is clanging back and forth against the large fan. Doesnt this mean the bolt that's in front of the washer is gone if its hitting the larger fan right ? She just brought it home and I can see the washer go back and forth when the engine is running and the fan is running
Got a leak under my 2004 lb7 duramax. Truck has 207,000 on it and was wondering if it could be the water pump. At an idle truck leaks out cooling seemingly directly under the water pump. Upper radiator hose isn't hard so I'm thinking it's not head gaskets. Get back to me thanks! Great channel!
+Tanner Campbell look up the term weeping hole, the hole is part of the water pump housing, if that hole is leaking while the truck is running your water pump needs to be replaced. From what you are saying it sounds like you have to replace that pump sorry about that good luck if you need any advice let me know
Ok I have a 07 gmc 2500 6.6L.my ? Is ever once awhile my add coolant light comes on.but the tank is full I even put a black line on the tank and it is still full.and on a hot day here in south jersery it has a haz coming out the exhaust.what am I looking out or is it just me.this is my first Diesel truck.
Ok , so my truck is a 2008 2500 Chevrolet Duramax and I’ve taken off the big nut and that I punched it and used a large crescent wrench . I’ve taken off the two bolts to that oil line or radiator line on top but ya say that we shouldn’t have to remove the belt. I don’t see how else that harmonic balancer is gonna come out with the way the serpentine belt wraps around a part of each . It’s getting dark and I’ll have to go and buy some lights , cause now that I have to wear reading glasses it’s all blurry wo em . I used a galvanized fence pipe to my Pittsburgh 3/4” torque wrench . Got it at harbor freight cause she will do over 260 ft pnds . Hopefully ya may see this and comment or if anyone else has replaced their water pump on 2008 Chevy Duramax 2500 6.6 . Thanks 🙏
I also already took out the intercooler pipe and that was so the fan shroud would come out. Gonna try and pull that harmonic balancer by hand again & watching for the key .
I have a water leak behind the water pump where the 212 mmmm boats are do I have to remove everything like doing a water pump removal to change that gasket I got a little drip leak I have to put coolant in maybe every 2 weeks thanks
I have a question, would a turbo that blew up cause a water pump to go bad? I’m only asking because I had a shop put in a aftermarket turbo but it failed and oil was spitting out of my exhaust and now my water pump is pouring coolant out of the weephole. The truck has never once got hot on me. It’s a LLY.
Truck Master how much of a pain is the harmonic balancer bolt??? That’s my only reservation I’m having. Water pump seep is leaking so I know I have to get at it
+bigmike2971 huge pain! You need a strong breaker bar and a very long cheater pipe also heat that bolt up before you pull it . I highly recommend you buying the leslie tool
Truck Master thanks. I did buy the flywheel tool I was just curious on this 36mm bolt. Went out and bought 3/4 ratchet and breaker bar. I have a 6 foot cheater already.
Truck Master thanks for the reply and info. Got her done. Had issue with that damn bypass pipe leaking and had to tear front down again and o ring on pump side was flattened. Replaced that and it’s all good. Thanks again tho......
So I have a lmm and have a slight leak where the inner cooler tube is on the driver side I see 2 bolts connected to a black metal tube one on each corner and had a drip of coolant whipped it off and see no more with truck running . But my question is do you half to remove the hurmanic balancer on the lmm engine ? If not then I would change it myself the water pump . I see lols of people who have changed it already and can someone tell me if it possible? If so anybody have a video showing it being done . Thanks
Good afternoon. I have a 2010 LMM Duramax and was wondering if I needed to reinstall the fan guard that fits into the fan shroud or can I leave it out. Not sure if it is necessary for proper cooling. Thank you.
I just did mine. just went in from bottom to pull nuts off back of pump. so didn't need to take inter fender wheel out or boost pipe off. my problem when doing this is the coolant pipe kept cutting oring s when reinstall ing ended up getting a thicker o ring and lube the shit out of it. so if was to do another one I would not remove that pipe. but thanks for ur videos I have watched all of them because I love duramax s
I think a person should just put a brand new o-ring in at both ends of that pipe when you do water pump, and that little piece of 3/8" hose attached to it too. Would have saved me a lot of grievance. I had to pull everything apart a second time to replace all that crap.
something u did NOT say, is when removing and installing the balancer, be very gental with the location pin,/keyway you hit that to hard it will fall out and or be off centre, which can cause weird vibrations in the engine and possibly break the crank. seen it before.....
My balancer did not simply slide off like it's supposed to. Had to pry very slowly from both the top and from under the truck, still barely, slowly came off. Needed replaced (had a crack) and the new one definitely did not slide on easily, either. Emory cloth on a slotted bolt spinning in a drill for a minute or so on the inside of the balancer (probably removed a half of a 0.001" and then it finally slid back on with a shot of WD. Can't be the only one who had to deal with this!

From what you are saying it sounds like you have to replace that pump sorry about that good luck if you need any advice let me know
Truck Master thank you sir will do
Ok I have a 07 gmc 2500 6.6L.my ?
Is that a 3/4 socket
I have a question, would a turbo that blew up cause a water pump to go bad? I’m only asking because I had a shop put in a aftermarket turbo but it failed and oil was spitting out of my exhaust and now my water pump is pouring coolant out of the weephole. The truck has never once got hot on me. It’s a LLY.
Probably a coincidence. My 2nd water pump went same time as my cp3 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏼
+bigmike2971 your in good shape then
Truck Master thanks for the reply and info. Got her done. Had issue with that damn bypass pipe leaking and had to tear front down again and o ring on pump side was flattened. Replaced that and it’s all good. Thanks again tho......
And do you want to replace the o ring on the transmission side and how to get the pipe out
Ironically it started raining on me while I was changing mine as well 😂
Thank you brother 👊🏽
So I have a lmm and have a slight leak where the inner cooler tube is on the driver side I see 2 bolts connected to a black metal tube one on each corner and had a drip of coolant whipped it off and see no more with truck running . But my question is do you half to remove the hurmanic balancer on the lmm engine ? If not then I would change it myself the water pump . I see lols of people who have changed it already and can someone tell me if it possible? If so anybody have a video showing it being done .
Thanks
What did you use on the back bolt of the pipe on the back of the pump
one question for you what is. a good water pump to use in a duramax
I forgot to take the Leslie took out.. now the engine is not turning. Any advice?
GRACIAS AMIGO, ME FUÉ MUY ÚTIL ESTE TUTORIAL, ME SUSCRIBO.
Thanks 👍
Is the out let pipe supposed to be loosee
what do you think about replacing to a. bigger Turbo Mouthpiece?
Thanks !
+Marco Corona +Marco Corona its a must if you own a lly but honestly it doesn't make much of a difference with the LBZs and lmms
Thanks! looking forward to your next video!
Good afternoon. I have a 2010 LMM Duramax and was wondering if I needed to reinstall the fan guard that fits into the fan shroud or can I leave it out. Not sure if it is necessary for proper cooling.
Thank you.
It’s definite needed to cool the engine but I left mine out and it’s been 5 years with no issues
Thank you very much for sending me your answer. I love your channel. You have helped me so much with my upgrades!!!
How do you get the water to burp up out!?
Where did you get that plastic Rivet tool ?
I got the two nuts off with out removing the inter cooler pipe or fender well
1911kaden how
Bend a 12mm wrench or ratcheting wrench
The pulley really has to come off for the water pump
Where do I order the tool to hold the flywheel still
Thanks very helpful 👍
I just did mine. just went in from bottom to pull nuts off back of pump. so didn't need to take inter fender wheel out or boost pipe off. my problem when doing this is the coolant pipe kept cutting oring s when reinstall ing ended up getting a thicker o ring and lube the shit out of it. so if was to do another one I would not remove that pipe. but thanks for ur videos I have watched all of them because I love duramax s
+Jason Scruggs that's a great point that O ring can be a huge headache thanks for the support man take care
I think a person should just put a brand new o-ring in at both ends of that pipe when you do water pump, and that little piece of 3/8" hose attached to it too. Would have saved me a lot of grievance. I had to pull everything apart a second time to replace all that crap.
STP oil treatment on any o ring allows them all to slip in with no damage.
something u did NOT say, is when removing and installing the balancer, be very gental with the location pin,/keyway you hit that to hard it will fall out and or be off centre, which can cause weird vibrations in the engine and possibly break the crank.
seen it before.....
You live in Florida? Ill meet up and bring you some beer, lol. Not sure if I want to tackle this. But, great video on how to get it done.
+Sean Boyles I wish I lived in Florida I'm in Michigan thanks man good luck!
If it blows white smoke, is it more likely to be the water pump or the water-cooled turbo?
White smoke out of the exhaust?
@@MrRojoneck Out of the exhaust
