Great video! Thank you! I did this in an hour and a half. Definitely drain some of the coolant guys. Either from drain plug or from lower hose. I just cracked thermostat open like many suggested and ended up with a little less than a gallon of DeX cool on the garage floor and all over my engine.
@@TruckMaster I'm changing the tstats at the moment. I didn't drain any coolant because I saw your comment that you don't have to. I opened the housing and now I have coolant pouring out
In addition to not needing to remove the compressor, you left out the part about the two vent holes in the rear thermostat need to be facing the rear of the thermostat housing. (Towards the firewall.)
Great video as always! Suggest y'all cover any open holes,(resonator pipe/oil fill pipe hole)with rags 'justincase' you drop a part/tool. LOL I had to replace a thermostat on an Audi A6 last month and it took 8 hours, those smart Germans put the thermostat behind the timing belt. I also have a Duramax and this code just came up, I am so glad I found this video I was dreading another thermostat job.

Squirt some dielectric grease in those electrical contacts to keep them corrosion free for years to come. Works on grounds or trailer wiring or any other connection exposed to weather
Hi sir thanks for the video it help a lot but now my lower Radiator heater Housing the one that’s next to the crankshaft is leaking do you have a video to replace the gasket on a 2003 GMC Sierra 6.6
IF YOU ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME!!! Save yourself some time!!!!!! I just installed 2 thermostats in my LLY. There is no reason at all to pull off the AC Compressor, the Belt, OR anything else for that matter. Take the bolts out of the thermostat housing, and the bolt out of the top of the thermostat housing that holds all the wiring, and the Bolt on the hardline bracket and you can lift the housing 3 to 4 inches. The thermostats will go right in! It literally took me 15 minutes TOTAL! PS - I didn't drain the system either! Every video on youtube says to take the compressor off! Trust me there is NO NEED!
Maybe lucky for your video, the thermostat housing gasket wasn't torn or broken. Had it been, it does pull away from the upper hose via an O ring connection. Your method worked okay but in some cases, the housing has to be removed to clean away the old gasket which then requires a new O ring. You did "burp" the system with the removable bolt on the housing, correct?
Great video, changing mine today because they are stuck open and the engine is running too cool. Only getting up to 155F tops (odb port reading) running hard in the cool weather. The low engine temp will hurt MPG. If you own a DPF equipped truck (thankfully I don't - have LLY) it will struggle to do a burn off.
Hey man another thing that's going to help the truck stay cool is you need to have him buy a radiator shroud that goes on top in the engine bay with that plastic piece gone all the air is being forced up instead of through the radiator
At 51 seconds of the video when you guys first opened the hood you can see the plastic piece that goes from the grill insert to that metal bracket the plastic shroud's missing
Hello, my 03 duramax with 300,000 miles is blowing cold air out of the heater when it's just idoling, drove about an hour to pick up my daughter, she was late so I had to sit for 1/2 hour, just blowing cold. When I started driving home again, the heater worked, when I got home I sit in the driveway and just cold air again. Do you think this problem could be the thermostat? They're the original, thanks for any advice, it's getting cold as shit here in the smoky mountains!
A question When I drive LB7 on the road, temperature of engine is fine with a truck camper on its bed and a jeep pulled behind. But I drive the truck with the same setup on uphill, the engine Temperature goes high. Sometimes, I have to stop to cool the engine off. I am planning to replace two thermostats soon because I had a similar experience with my jeep. Is that what you would recommend me to do? Mine is 2003 Duramax. It's mileage is 140,000. I replaced all the fuel injectors. There is no other issue with this truck other than driving uphill with a camper on its bed and a jeep pulled behind. Any recommendations to consider?
I have an 2005 LLY, my coolant temp always stayed around 180. I did a flush and replaced the thermostats with Murray brand and now it fluctuates between 180 and 200. Just goes back and forth. Is that normal?
Yes as the coolant heats up in the block it's then moved to the radiator to cool down. I can get my truck past 140 I'm installing mishimoto thermostats this weekend.
Hey truck master, greetings! My 06 lbz duramax has 61k miles should i change the thermostats? Also would you recommend to flush radiator same time? Thanks
No, Thermostats last a very long time so you could easily go another 100k miles just watch the temp as you should always.Overheating causes severe damage to the motor and these 6.6 are very expensive. This guy drove with it over heating and that's not smart and just not worth it ever
When this process is done do you flush the coolant or you just loosen up the bleeding bolt or just remove the whole thermostat and let the antifreeze drain by it self?
While the truck is off, you open the bleeder on the thermostat housing add coolant until it comes out. Close the bleeder when you are at the full line.
Truck Master ahh, I had seen the switches and just thought it was some type of insert like what I'm wanting to do for light bar switches in mine. I have a insight cts2. Thank you though for the fast response
Hey truck master I have a question about the thermostat, a shop installed mine but my temps flutter from 180-200 is that normal for after replacement ?
Should have also explained the orientation of the bleed holes on the rear thermostat. Better way to do it instead of unplugging all your harnesses and creating a bigger headache is to just just disconnect the metal tube at the back of the housing, but Im guessing that’s because the complete set wasn’t bought
It overheated because the thermostats failed to open. You said on the first part of your comment. If they stay closed then the motor is going to overheat
Your buddy needs to upgrade that turbo mouthpiece with a lbz mouthpiece, or afe, or s&b i went with afe one of the first things i did to my truck, they say its important on the lly espicially if you tow, thanks for the vid keep em coming bro.
+High desert John thanks for the tip he's actually do head gaskets soon during the job he plans to upgrade a bunch of stuff while the engine is taken apart

Kinda need some help with my 02duramax the check engine light came on n when it did my truck wouldn't pass first, I stop n let it cool down for 45min than turn it back on n it was running good after 30min my truck started kicking n brought me to first again I burn my transmission oil , I changed it thought that was it but no stil doing the same....the code that came in the computer was p0732
Truck Master yes I did smell it , when I changed the transmission fluid it smell burn When I dropped the pan to drain fluid it was blk n have metal in it people had told me that it's inside my transmission n that I have to get it rebuilt I'm not sure to believe them
If you dropped the tranny pan and there is metal in it, chances are you have some serious issues, if you are planning on keeping the truck... Get it rebuilt!..... cold weather is coming...it will leave you on the side of the road.....
So next time just remove the bolt in the valve cover that holds the pipe down. Remove the four bolts in the thermostat housing and remove the thermostats. Reverse those steps and you have a 20 minute start to finish job. Less is more.
Anyone who believes an engine can function correct without thermostats needs to do more research. If the system isn't cooling enough and the thermostats function and open fully, the problem isn't the thermostat. Driving without thermostats keeps the engine from getting to efficient operating temps. Bad idea
Truck Master. Ok thank you. Like the videos you do keep it up. I know you was talking about putting a stack in your truck. I have on in mine it's a mbrp stack looks good and sounds sweet
You have a thermostat stuck open.. Diesel engines like some heat, while it should not hurt the truck to run cool, it will drink more fuel not getting up to proper operating temp. I'm changing mine out today because seeing the same low temps. From my research the low temp you can lose 1-2mpg.
