Matt Dunning, a former professional rugby player for the Waratahs, Western Force, and the Wallabies, has undergone a remarkable transformation in his approach to health and nutrition. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing between 120-125 kg during his rugby career as a prop, Matt was known for his robust physique and love for food and drink.
After retiring from rugby, Matt experienced significant weight fluctuations, dropping from 132 kg to 86 kg in just 8 months through extreme measures. However, this was followed by years of yo-yo dieting, with his weight oscillating between 92 kg and 110 kg. He tried various diets and fasting methods, including water fasts, juice fasts, vegetarianism, and intermittent fasting, but none provided lasting results.
By January 2022, Matt was frustrated with his ongoing battle with weight and nutrition. After a particularly challenging period where he lost weight through a 76-day juice fast, only to regain it quickly, he decided to make a change. This led him to the ketogenic diet, which proved to be a game-changer. For the first time, he experienced weight loss and maintenance without constantly worrying about food intake.
Transitioning from carbohydrates to fats came with its challenges, such as keto flu and adjusting to higher fat consumption. Fortunately, Matt had the support of Alex McDonald, who guided him through the process with expertise and encouragement. Alex, known for completing five marathons in five days while fasting, provided the confidence and research-backed advice Matt needed.
After a year on keto and another year on a carnivore diet, Matt feels better than ever. He no longer relies on daily weigh-ins, as his clothing tells the story of his success. This journey has led him to a healthier, more balanced life, free from the constant struggle with weight and diet.

I love his comment "They won't listen. They don't want to listen. They just want to tell you that you are wrong!" (Regarding sharing Carnivore podcasts with friends.) It is so frustrating. My friend is a Cornell graduate in nutrition (like Sally Norton.) She graduated in the late 70's. She has struggled with her weight her entire adult life. She eats fruit. Carbs, very low fat, almost no protein. Thinks she needs to eat less and move more. That has not ever worked for her. She needs a knee replacement, and she can't move more. But she is too heavy to rehab from the surgery, and she knows it. So she won't even talk to orthopedics. It is a vicious cycle. She's been my best friend since 7th grade. We are 67 now. And I just can't convince her to drop the carbs and fruit and find satiety in meat.
Same with my best friend!!!’n ❤
Some people get some relief just with intermittent fasting. Maybe she could find some relief just have a smaller eating window. Maybe that would be more bearable for her and maybe make her more open after she gets results. 😊
Sorry to hear that but it sounds like she is way too stubborn and not going to listen to you especially if you continue to try to convince her. It may have to come from someone else. It's frustrating, I know. I think some people just don't know who they'd be without their ailments.
Maybe you can appeal to her scientific side and challenge her to do an n of 1 study modulating her triglyceride to HDL ratio. Get a baseline, which is probably awful, and challenge her to test low/no carb/keto for 30 days and show that it will get worse. Do not mention weight loss or scales - just Lipid profile for Trig/HDL ratio. The you will have to educate her about LMHR: Paul Mason, David Diamond, Ben Bikman study. God bless and protect you.
Same with my sister (autoimmune conditions).People are terrified of Dietary Fat because of the Ancel Keyes mis-information .Its so frustrating . Fruit has fructose sugar , so its hard to not be addicted to any food with sugar ,but because fruit seems unprocessed many think its good for them.
Whoop whoop. Hit the lost 80 pounds mark yesterday. Pretty amazing. Simply eating meat.
Loving Carnivore!! Going into my 23rd month! The best thing I've ever done for myself!!
You can't go wrong trying it for 30-90 days. The SAD diet will still be there if Carnivore isnt what you want.
You will be hooked after 30 days...be prepared to be astonished...AND FEELING 20 YEARS YOUNGER, AND METABOLICALLY HEALTHY!!
I absolutely agree. 16 weeks C
I totally agree, I’ve been carnivore since January, I’ve gone from 99 kg down to 70 kg, I’m fitter than I’ve been since my 30s, I’m now 61. It’s changed my life. It’s nice to feel fit again.

3 years carnivore never felt better 69 years now but everyone thinks I'm mid 50s to late 50 s and I feel late 40s and can prove it in the gym. Thanks Matt your story is a lot like mine.
Great. I am 69 and have been a little anxious and still hung on to ketovore with some berries and avocado. I finally made the plunge and 10 days 99% carnivore as I admit I drink coffee and green tea.
When Mr Dunning said that he no longer gets on the scale , that was the most interesting part of the story for me , because Carnivore lets you trust your inner instinct again , and not have to read any kind of outside feedback . For me , it puts me into alignment with my own self , AND that is not only good for me , but for everyone around me too . Keep going strong !
Interesting; I (somewhat unconsciously) quit weighing early on because I became focused on optimizing my health.
@@karenrotter6280 For me , sure the stuff everyone talks about - health weight -lifestyle , , but what I find really amazing is my perspective is changing about my own details and the world around me . I find myself a stronger and more realistic community member , and also I am more conscious of the actual earth , as well as more attentive to the needs of my body - It is like because of eating what my body is made to eat , everything makes sense - from an logic that my body agrees with .
I've been carnivore for two years and the only time I get on the scale is for my yearly physical. I can see my abs for the first time in my adult life, whatever the scale says is irrelevant.
I too no longer look at the scales. Instead every morning when I wake up and go to the bathroom, I look down and can still see the "cause of most of my problems", and i can still see the veins on my arms and biceps, I feel full of energy and ready for the day. Why the hell would I step on a scale to check my weight?
Watching 2 of my grandparents die from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's, 1 to a Heart Attack and another to Brain Cancer (GBM) and being told each time one of them passed that, this runs in the family, spurred me on throughout my life looking for the panacea of disease.
At 30 I now believe I will most likely dodge all of the above and it is all due to a few incredible doctors like Anthony, sadly what I know now can't change my grandparents outcome and I guess this is what Dr Chaffee is referring to when he says the people should be upset, to say the least.
It should be for the sake of many generations lives not lived to their fullest, that we now live our lives to the fullest and I look forward to annoying some people at 120 saying, it's the fat man, they've beeeeen saying it's the fat. lol.
So for that, a massive thanks to Dr Chaffee an absolute legend of a fella, and to his team helping him make all of this possible.
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandparents but I'm really glad to hear that you are on the right track now! I'm very glad that my videos have been able to help, and hopefully you can use them to inspire your friends, family, as well as your children in order to keep them as healthy as possible. Thank you for watching it!
As wife of an ex pro front row (tighthead prop) player in UK (Dr C mentioned him in podcast), Matt Dunning's experience is very reflective of ex pro players particularly props and who go from eating to maintain a high weight and then that all going downhill upon retirement without the same level of fitness / exercise. Then totally transforming body type with diet and the realisation that you could have been a superior player all along and maybe would have played for your country if only you had figured out the right way to eat at the time! Really great watch, Matt's story will be very relatable to a lot of ex-pro rugby players!
Despite the 9 year old me being quite slim, my teacher took his first look at me and said “you’re the tighthead prop” and that’s where I spent my entire schoolboy rugby career. By the time I left school, I’d become the fat kid thanks mainly to my intake of breakfast cereals that I once thought were good for you. As I’m now 43, I’m always interested in seeing “my generation” of sports players doing well as some guys health really goes south following the end of their careers. Great to hear the mention of Phil Vickery who was one of my favourites to watch playing at 3. Thanks to the carnivore diet I lost over 50kgs and needed a new wardrobe of clothes and I found some I really liked and it turned out they were made by Phil’s clothing company. I’d like to think that if that teacher looked at me now, he’d probably pick me to play No.8 thanks to the diet….
Thank you, Dr. Chaffee, Matt, and all of the mods for the livestream! This was a fantastic interview!
My "aha" moment was when we had loaned our stock truck to the neighbors ... I got into the seat to reclaim it... I forgot the seat position could be moved, as we had never moved in 28 years … I unbuttoned my shirt turning the steering wheel "I must lose weight"
Great job Matt! You look much younger and healthier.
Body builders not only take GH but because they push eating carbs so much they also take insulin in order to try and process more of them which also contributes to the “bubble guts”
Rugby and Rugby League players would do really well on this diet. Wallabies are a good rugby team, as I'm in NZ we have the All Blacks. 😊
Wow..I looked up Matt...he looks fantastic now
Greetings from Pennsylvania USA
When Matt said “it’s like carnivore calibrates your body to where it should be” that resonated.
" obviously its hard to be vocal though because it's almost like it's er , people just don't wanna hear it and they think you're stupid "
AMEN
💛
Such great content Anthony ! Thank you so much ! Day 54 of straight carnivore for me! I am stoked ! Loving this health journey ! Zero complaints! I don't have any health testimonies because I didn't have any complaints other than a little bit of right knee pain ( 1/10 ) that has completely disappeared !
.. also, the comparison photos online of Matt here when he was playing rugby - wow ! what a transformation !
Day 49 🔥 My knee injury pain vanished on Day 2! 😁😁😁⚡⚡⚡
It's wild after being that awake about how he ended up where he is, and knowing that the government and food bodies are lying to us regarding what's healthy, he still allows his kids to eat plant food.
I did the Noom app for a bit. They limited me to 1500 calories. Different foods were color coded and i was limited on the types of foods i could eat. Protein was limited the most cal of the 1500. Protein was color coded red. So even if you stayed at or below 1500, i had to limit protein to about 200 cal. Most green veggies were ok. I could eat a lot of green veggies. I could eat more fruit than protein. Their concept was about calorie density. Protein was more dense because it had less water. Fruit had more water. I couldn’t sustain that diet.
I absolutely love hearing these testimonials. People truly do not want to listen but they can't deny the results.

Great to see someone doing this in Ireland. I live in Dublin and it's my way of life now. Still on and off but going all in from 1st July.

Hello from beautiful Central Oregon.

Cant wait for more videos, cheers from the Netherlands!
I just googled Matt, yes he was a different person.
Great interview! Thanks Gents! 👏🏻
Great conversation gentlemen
I'm an old man. I was taking magnesium for night time leg cramps. No more need of magnesium on zero carb because no more night time awakening with leg cramps.
He’s a great guy 🙌. Can relate on the comments from others about the lifestyle.
Looking forward to this - thanks
Thanks Dr.Anthony well done Matt 👏 loved this very inspirational.
I'm in the US but played rugby for 18 years in the front row. I always had a hard time keeping the weight on. So, I ate a ton of food. Later, when I retired from rugby, I was still on construction site and kept stable with hard work. When I started my own business and wasn't on the tools as much, my weight blew up.
I have tried everything to lose weight. Finally, I started keto about 2 years ago and lost 40lbs. I stalled for about for about 4 months.
Although I feel much better, I still need to drop another 40 lbs. I started strict carnivore about 3 weeks ago. No results yet but hoping to get back to losing this last bit of unwanted weight.
it'll happen...just keep going!!
What a great conversation Matt and Anthony. Matt your story is a very powerful one and provides such a brilliant perspective from someone who was both a professional athlete and being a very big guy. Your transformation is inspiring and I’m very to proud to have helped just a little in your journey. Alex
I really like when host gives their guests the floor to talk. Thank you Dr. Chaffee.

Great interview, Dr Chaffee. 👍

The very thing people criticize you for is what makes you win in the end!
Cost? I get grass fed burger at Whole Foods for $7.49 lb. The butcher said they get 1 1/2 cows every Monday from a farmer 45 miles away. They butcher roasts, rib eye, tri tip, New York steak, burger, etc.
Eggs fresh for $6 a dozen from a friend at work who raises her own chickens. She told me I did not need to pay. I said absolutely not. I offered her $6. Her eggs still have the bloom on. I was spending $10 at Whole Foods for pastured eggs. She also does not feed them corn and soy.
Two pounds burger and 2 eggs per day is $479.40 a month. Tell me folks don’t spend that in a month at Starbucks and Chik Filet.
omg Shredded wheat and Grape nuts ... It never ends with the Snake Oil 😂...🥩🥩Cheers
Good on you, Matt. All the weight loss must be really helping your drop goals!!!
I love rugby, I am waiting to play this sport since a month. Gosh the delay is making me crazy.

So great seeing an athlete that looks so healthy in retirement. I’m sure he’ll continue to take on many more things to challenge himself.
Used to watch Matt play on tv from England. Im a Tahs fan.
He looks a different person now. He could make a big difference to ex players if he gets his story out there. Maybe a talk from Paul Mason and him would work well.
Have a 16 year old scrum half in the house, regularly plays 80 mins and says he doesn’t get tired. He said he won’t change.
Hi Dr Anthony love your shows I’ve had Crohn’s for about 35 yrs and had a major depressive episode about 20 yrs ago and gassed myself with Carbon monoxide and had an OD nearly passed I assume it this that has me so bedridden du ever see any such Brain injuries resolve on this diet I’m hoping to do HBO cheers Karl NZ
No one can say for sure because some damage can’t be undone. That being said, being in ketosis is absolutely the best for your issues. Best of luck to you 😊
8 years of Carnivore....This has been the one of the best choices I have made in my life to date. ❤
Modern humans are enticed by ‘taste’ which has been supplied by food manufacturers. Watch any advert or cooking program snd its all about flavouts snd bliss points, never nutrition.
Thanks for sharing. Do what works for you 😂🎉😂. Boom and boom
Haven't lived in Oz for 4 decades so Matt, you're a complete unknown to me. But it doesn't matter who you are Carnivore is a great way to reset your body and your mind. Hope you (and your family) keep with it. Every month you can lash out on a diet coke; that much won't hurt. Good on ya Mate.
it would be quite interesting to know if there are active rugby players that do a carnivore diet, or how many got into it after being done with professional rugby because the lifestyle+health issues caught up with them. or at least a keto nutrition
Oh the memories of soaking GrapeNuts in milk for 30 minutes. Spot on with that reference.
Dr.Salisbury, Salisbury steak
I think Mat undervalues the impact he can have. He’s gone through this journey by experimenting on himself. The difference it’s made is the proof and it doesn’t matter if he can’t answer all the technical science based type questions. As an elite athlete and looking and listening to him now Is a huge incentive and example to others. As he says, he doesn’t have to tell people what to do, just give them the feedback on his journey. I really liked Dr Chaffees explanation on Autophagy. After losing 100% of my taste and smell after getting pneumonia twice, I got 75-80% of both back in 2019 by doing a 7 day water fast. This was after reading about Yoshinori Ohsumi’s work on it after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016. Even my doctor wanted to prescribe antibiotics to try and produce the same results Autophagy produced .
Hi Anthony. Thank you for your insightful and detailed videos as always! I had a question I’d love your perspective on. Being on carnivore has been one of the most transformative things for my health. However I have been diagnosed with Familial Hypercholesterolemia. I have only seen conflicting perspectives about this. Some say it’s dangerous to eat a ketogenic diet without statins to control cholesterol levels, while others outright disagree and some even say the condition is backed by poor science and is speculative at best. What are your views on this topic? 😊
He’s done multiple videos on this
Oh I didn’t realise! I’ve tried searching his name and the condition. I can’t see anything that directly addresses this. Would you mind linking me to one of those videos? 😊
“Gobbsmacked” lol.
10 months off my standard gluten-free diet. I started with keto, then started reducing veggies and increasing carnivore. Now I’m like 90% carnivore. My biggest hurdle were leg cramps. In the mornings I felt like I ran a marathon over night. I was also plagued by HPylori. With a help of a young doctor specializing in preventative medicine , she put me in bioidentical hormone replacement (I’m 73), increased magnesium, thiamine, glutamine; and mastica, golden seal, oregano oil for HPylori. She is not in favor of my diet, but I continue and she thinks my cholesterol is too high even though all other markers are excellent. In a few months I will test for HPylori again. I hope this will finally be cured. Oh and I totally forgot about my leg cramps😊
Just look at the faces from the thumbnail, a clear winner emerged from the right side, I mean “right” side.
I saw a video yest where dietician said no one could eat less than 20 carbs daily and be healthy … she never heard of such a thing 😳

I'm guessing weetabix is our shredded wheat.
That stuff tastes great! It just needs to be frosted. And then add about half a cup of sugar to it.
I know it sounds unhealthy, but you can make up for that by dumping the bad milk and replacing with sweetened almond milk.
Completely vegan too!
😂
When I was young there was a saying "never eat shredded wheat" 🤔🤔🤔
OMG you are joking right 😂 Or very very mistaken 😮Totally incorrect, totally bad advice
@@MrIATaylor What, Fauci would approve and he is the science.

How does Anthony feel about pure Whey isolate after a workout if you don’t have time to make a steak?
53:38 - I'm pretty sure these people don't listen because if you think about it, the carnivore diet is a significant commitment, as it essentially eliminates many different food options for people: no bread, no fruit, no sugar, etc. People aren't going to openly just give these things up; most will actively avoid anything that supports them giving the foods they love. It's similar to people who smoke cigarettes. If you show them stories and information about smoking, many will just ignore everything you send them because once they become more informed, they will then be at odds with themselves and essentially be forced to give up smoking. It's the same with food. It's much easier to remain ignorant. Ignorance is bliss.
true...but MANY people get so tired of hurting, being fat and being sick...THEY CHANGE!! Including myself:)

do you consider electrolytes ? Do you consider them to be a 'supplement'? For instance, most electrolytes contain magnesium....
??
@@stric10 I meant to ask if Anthony uses electrolytes at all. He has recently said that for the most part he has given up on salting his food.
A lot of carnivores use electrolytes that are just plain with no flavor
@@van123446 I doubt it, he is quite stubborn 😃. Plus he's already been doing carnivore for ages. For people who are not that far in the journey it does make perfect sense, imo.
The longer I’m carnivore the less I need. I’m incredibly active even hiking up to 20 miles per day and I’m good with water. I usually eat bacon and eggs everyday which has a lot of salt.
I've been on Carnivore for two months, but now I have doubts, in the last few days I've had major problems with urination, pain in my kidneys, lower back and tingling in my arms and legs..only meat, eggs, water and supplements..I'm not sure if it's for me. .
Sounds like it may be a kidney stone/oxalate dumping. Just because the transition may be hard doesn't mean it's not for you.

Pls listen to Sally Norton about oxalate.
Are you having fats aswell.. super important!!!! 40% fats to protein... sounds like you are having an oxalate dump... stick with it!!! Your body is healing
I've never been a fan of salads or vegetables, and I try to eat the same amount of protein and fat per gram.
