  • In this third episode of my new “Street Photo Diary” I shoot some street and cityscape photography around the streets of Dublin City, using a Fuji X-Pro 2 and 18-55mm Lens. All of the images were Jpegs from the camera, with a little processing in Lightroom.

So sorry. I can't believe I said filters! I meant picture profiles when you shoot jpegs. I know you do post processing in LR as well. Just wondering if you use the color profiles in the camera as well. Great pics btw! Love the colours. Totally my style!!!

I use raw with standard picture profile in Lightroom. Sometimes with VSCO Kodak portra preset.

Dude, answer me this, isn't this a video of taking a photograph of a stranger walking past, a photo of a building, a photo of a bus going past. Now, before you throw a hissy fit, this is not an accusation towards YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY or YOUR VIDEO, because I find myself doing the exact same stuff, as well as other photographers. What I'm asking is, is this enough? Do we need to do something different. When you shoot a scene, does it not have to make the viewer say "I like that", or workout what story the photographer is trying to tell us? I don't know. Maybe one day I'll figure it out. Have a look at some of my shots, you'll see what I mean, I'm doing the same thing, I'm not answering my own questions, maybe I might be able to after another 10K photos. www.flickr.com/photos/124462659@N05

What is a story in this context though? I see these as capturing a moment of life in the city I live in. That's why I try to capture things in context. The mundanity of people going about their lives is a story in and of itself. Despite what people might tell you there are no rules to street photgraphy - other than don't be an a** about it. Personally, I hate the style of street photography where the camera is shoved in some unsuspecting person's face, in the name of "art".
Photography can be whatever you want it to be. Is my street photography any good? I don't know - but I take shots that I like. Whether it's because of the scene in front of me, whether it's because of the colour or the texture or the light. Take the thumbnail shot - I like this because there's symmetry here, and a good contrast of colour. I saw this coming and waited for the right moment to get this composition. You don't see it because I edited the video down. This wasn't random, it was deliberate. The 'story" is in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes it's ok to enjoy a scene without having to think about what hidden meaning there might be in it. If I see something that strikes me visually I'll take a shot of it.
There will always be others that will say it's crap anyway, no matter how good it is. I just try to shoot what I think is good, be my own worst critic and always look to improve. Is this video my best work? No, of course not. But that's partly why I do this, so I can look back at it and try to improve.

thomas fitzgerald, of course, you’re right. I think, after reading your reply, I’m asking the question to myself. Do I need to do something different? What can I do to improve? How do I go about doing it? Otherwise, I’ll carry on doing the same thing, shot after shot as my photos prove. Maybe one day it’ll come to me, but I’ll keep trying to enjoy it in the mean time.
Anyway, you’re video is enjoyable and there are some really good shots in there. Always enjoy and have fun, I think that’s when we produce better work.

Thanks. I'm trying to find a way that I can narrate too so that I can explain why I took certain shots. I could do it as a voice over in post, but I would prefer to do it at the time. Anyway - will try with the next episode !
