Basically the reason they didn’t like her was bc she grew up real poor in an area that black people lived in as well. So she grew up almost equal to them. And that’s why they didn’t like her and then when Johnny left hilly and got with her of all people it was mind blowing to them.

People were nice, some for sure, but not a lot of people have it in them to push back on societal pressures. It is impressive what the civil rights movement accomplished. A lot of suffering to get there. The little white kids like my Dad did grow up to march with black Americans as adults. At least some did. Good hearts come in all packages.

No, no, the scene isn't about that. Celia (blonde) thinks Hilly is upset with her because she married Hilly's ex, Johnny. In reality, Hilly is pissed because the pie she won is Minny's. Earlier in the movie, Minny was employed by Hilly and in revenge for Hilly's racist abuse, Minny gave her a pie made from her shit. Obviously, this secret is hugely scandalous, disgusting, and embarrassing for Hilly. So now, in this scene, Minny is Celia's maid and Hilly thinks Celia is mocking her for eat the shit pie.

I know everyone keeps talking about amazing performances by Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer and yes they were amazing and deserve all the praise, but Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard were just as great. I love this movie.
