    I think you should have left one $5 rack. There is a psychological incentive that you are getting a good deal that encourages folks to buy stuff.

      OR split (upper/lower) a 20 buck slot in half - and sell for 10 bucks.
      More wood than a bundle but half as much as a 20 stack.
      Perfect one night 4-6 hour fire.

      With more potential customers driving by $5 bundles might sell along the nieghbor's road with more traffic.
      I also like the $10 idea. Good for a nice cookout in the backyard over an open fire while socializing with a few friends.

      I was going to say that by removing the $5 bundles, you also remove the “discount” that the $20 rack offers.

      I was going to say nearly this same thing. The $5 dollar bundles play a psychological trick on the mind and gets people more likely to stop and buy.

      The $5 bundle sells the $20 racks, so he just fired his best sales rep in the process of trying to be more efficient.

  • @JDeWittDIY
    @JDeWittDIY 3 года назад +986

    If the $5 bundle is present, it will help make the $20 stack be perceived as a better value which will drive sales of the $20 stacks. One of the 10 slots should be dedicated to this, even if you never sell any of the bundles. Marketing is tricky! :)

      I agree - anything seen as marketing here would be counter-productive, but giving an option with perceived better value definitely "helps" an unsure buyer make their mind up.
      Also, just visually helps a buyer quantify what's on offer in the bigger racks.

      Yes, but I wonder how much that works for firewood, which value depends on how much you value the experience you'll get out of it more than on the intrinsic value as a fuel. A big pile of wood equals a campfire that lasts for longer. And anyone with a slightest bit of imagination knows $20 for all that wood that came from a tree that was planted, tended for decades, cut down, and processed is a steal.
      I'd rather use the $5 bundle space to sell marshmallows and other campfire accessories.

      criminals may be everywhere, but it is these parts of America where good honest people live, to me this isn't much of a social experiment as much as just proving my point, the experiment comes when you put one of these near a city of 25,000 or more.
      90% of the time, I will bet you those foreigners are from those cities and that's why they think that way.

    • @jakinchan3432
      @jakinchan3432 3 года назад +12

      @@shawnbybee85 not necessarily because city people on average are less honest. I don’t think there is enough information to tell yet. Could be a variety of factors. For example, the more people there are, the easier to get away with something because you don’t stand out. Also, people in general are more likely to steal from large corporations than family farms/garage sales, and theft of fruits and vegetables in general is less common.
      On the other hand, cities are usually where the poorest people live, who have the most to gain from stealing. However, this is somewhat a blanket statement, and poor doesn’t mean necessarily mean thief.
      Also, traffic is also important. The person in this video noted that around 8 cars passes his stand per minute in the new location. If we were to place the stand in a decently large city, depending on the location, a couple dozen cars may pass by per minute. So if someone steals from the stand, is it because people in cities are more likely to be bad, or is it because there’s a higher chance a criminal will pass by since more cars pass by per minute?

Makes me glad I get no tv out here and the mountain blocks the radio. I went into town wednesday to see some friends and they were all talking about how they're struggling to stay off their phones because the news depresses them. Phone service is intermittent here and completely ends in another mile. Naturally, I don't have a cell phone addiction. I'm not cut off, I talk to people and find out stuff that's going on, and clearly I have internet. But the bad news trifecta of radio, tv, and cell phones is not part of my life, and I'm better off for it. I'd say 90% of what goes on is good or neutral. Suggest a big sign “Firewood” on top. For those drivers who aren’t thinking of it, might miss the sign on the end. I think adding a big sign will increase the “stoppage” (the percentage of those 8 cars/min that drive by).
    Also, you’re handling individual wood pieces at least 2 times: loading your metal cage, again to fill the roadside stand. I suggest a modified roadside stand that will accept 2 metal cages side-by-side (and modify each cage to hold 2 stacks with a divider down the middle). This way you can replace 1 or 2 cages (2 or 4 stacks) at once without handling individual pieces. When you have multiple stands, you’ll want to service them quickly and without having to juggle wood pieces.

    Both you're and you're friends lands are beautifully kept and maintained.
    In Scotland we call these "honesty box's" usually for eggs and salads and root veg , and same as you , thefts are uncommon , actually very rare.

    I love the freedom you have in the states. Where I live you'd need to pay loads of money to become self-employed, liability insurance (what if someone trips on your firewood stand) , etc.

    I like how you have half-cars passing by your place every minute...
    "Hey, there goes another *half-of-a-car!!!"* :-))
    I get about 13 cars per *day* on my road!! And, I ain't complaining!
    [not exactly, but pretty low] :-)

    I had a covered stand for firewood out by the road . We sold bundles with 5 pieces for 2.50 each. Most people were happy with the dry hardwood and price. I was happy because I was tripling my money. But one day while working on the tractor nearby , I witnessed a truck pull up and start throwing bundles into his truck bed. He waved to me and took off. When I checked the self pay box there was no money. Boy was I pissed. After a day of fuming I went looking for the truck. Luckily I found some one else selling bundles of firewood close by . As I checked out his bundles the same truck that took mine pulled into the driveway. . I bought one of his bundles and asked him to come over so I could show him something. As I ripped open the bundle my thank you tag with my name on it fell out. I always put a thank you tag in the middle of every bundle I sell. Sheriff showed up 15 minutes later

    You should put a yellow flag on top of the sheds. Also, any signage approaching the sheds?

    I have friends here in Georgia that do this, there's a 19000 acre lake down the road a few miles! Theres alot of people driving down on weekends that only need a small amount of wood and stop and pick it up! They have made a bunch of money! They are in the grading business, clearing lake lots and digging foundations mostly so they bring home a lot of logs! All the pines are sawn on their woodmiser saw mill and one of the sons builds barns for customers!!! They get paid to get rid of the trees and get paid for the wood when it sawn or split! Can't go wrong on that deal!!!!

    You don't have people from Houston TX anywhere around you! The wood, the cash box, and the stand itself would be gone!

    Sounds about right. My family likes to set up a roadside garage sale with an old paint can to drop the money into, have never has a theft issue. Have suspected it a few times, but then people would stop by the next day with the money saying they didn't have the change on hand.

    Great idea to branch out. With you dump trailer you might want to consider changing your design to incorporate a skid frame bottom and stiffen the stand with cross braces in the center which would separate each row. This would help if you wanted to move them too. Really love the custom signage.

      We did end up adding some cross bracing inbetween the front and back rack to stiffen the rack and add a divider. Made it much more solid

    I think since you're out in the country, people appreciate the time it takes you to cut and split that wood. If you were in the city I'd say "Straight up honesty through paranoia" Really neat and convenient means of marketing your wood though. I'd happily buy from one of your stands.
