Best example I got of this was an IOU I had with an ex-friend. I had written what they owed and told them that the grocery money I gave them had to be returned in cash.
They erased the IOU and disappeared. I didn’t know where they were, so I rewrote the IOU as it wasn’t paid off then left for the scheduled movie date with my boyfriend. Ex-friend texted me how I am a horrible friend and person, to the point that my boyfriend had to get involved. Thankfully we were alone in that theater, but it really soured the date for us.
Then the ex-friend told me that I did agree to be gifted with salad packets for the $100 I gave them for the IOU in grocery money. I was 6 months pregnant at the time and didn’t have a job, and I did loose my cool. Ex-friend used that moment to tell my boyfriend how they are the victim and I just want to steal my ex-friend’s money.
Still short $400 (rent and groceries) but my baby and I don’t have that toxicity to deal with no more.

Glad this term is getting recognized at a larger scale now, so many times where people gaslight someone, and the person knows that they are gaslighting them but they just can’t think of a proper term to call them out on it.
I partially agree. It's good the word is getting spread if it's being understood and used correctly. But some people don't fully understand it and use it incorrectly, which endangers people who are being gaslighted in relationships all the time. My friend uses it incorrectly and essentially says if you're messing around and he's getting triggered, that's gaslighting, which is not true. I was gaslit by my mum as a child all the time that my reality when I grew up was warped, and what I thought was "normal" was not. Been 10 years and I'm still in therapy working on it.

I think there's an important difference between lying and gaslighting. Lying is just not telling the truth/trying to convince someone they're wrong. Gaslighting is making the other person feel crazy and like they're the one who's at fault. And usually it's slow and over a long period of time. Not just telling a lie
This video really touched me because iv'e did some toxic stuff to my friends and lied about it and now I wish I'd seen this sooner.
A gaslighter’s motto “I’m not the problem, you’re the problem” I will never forget the story an ex friend said to me and our other friends one time, she was in a relationship that was going CALM, SMOOTH, BUTTERY! No drama at all….and she started a petty argument out of nowhere because she said, and I quote “this shit is too calm” some people can’t let go of their need to fuel their ego through drama
Sorry you had to deal with that. Some people literally just want to tear good things down. Silence can be deadly, and the best reaction (if you deem appropriate) can sometimes be no reaction & slowly distancing yourself from them.
what's true for this can also be their upbringing. If they feel comfortable in chaos because that's home for them. They'll continue to seek out fucked up situations or worse gaslight to create the chaos they so badly crave to feel like its actually love. Because the love they've grown to know, and the only version of love they've cultivated for themselves, is the love that was given to them as a kid.
@@UnknownCartoonEditor No reaction is absolutely the move. As soon as they start a lie, literally just walk away and give them the silent treatment. An intentional gaslighter has the very specific goal of altering your perception. If you put up a wall every time they lie, they physically do not have access to your perception. Not to mention shunning is very upsetting to humans, who are social creatures. So you're effectively punishing them for bad behavior at the same time. "You lie to me, you get no interaction with me" There's zero purpose in trying to reason with one. You can literally slam down piles of video evidence, and they will STILL find a way to rationalize their way out of it in their own minds. It will only serve to ruin your own mental state. The only option is total rejection

I don't think anybody who tries to be a good partner in a relationship should be cheated on, much less to that extent. Even despite possibly having feelings of reliance or attachment to that person. After getting cheated on, there's just no mending that trust and would be better off cutting ties.

I feel like sWooZie knows when I’m dealing with a problematic friend. First, he made a video a while back about toxic friends and now one about gaslighting, both during times where a friend has straight up been manipulative and toxic. This is definitely the sign I needed to full on cut this friend out of my life!

I haven’t seen a Swoozie upload in ages! :) so happy you’re back! I’ve always enjoyed your relationship takes! The topic of people manipulating others so that there’s equivalent anger is something I’ve experienced with my parents, siblings and romantic relationships. I prefer keeping things peaceful but I need to start creating boundaries around this dynamic.
it's important to note that there is a difference between gaslighting and lying, everyone lies at some point, gaslighting is specifically lying with the intent to make someone question their own sanity.

I have recently had this unfortunate discovery with friends and gaslighting. It's always the most insecure/immature ones that try gaslighting you. You might even call them out for it step by step what you saw them doing and they will still try to further lie to your face even when you're giving them a chance to come clean. Like, nope. Block and move on. You don't need friends like that.
Amen! I needed to read this today, I cut ties and blocked a former friend because her lying and gaslighting was level 10. It is what it is.
The "be honest" advice is the best you can get. I admit I was once the dishonest type in my relationships, after some self reflection and desire to change I decided honesty was the best policy and my life and relationships have improved so damn much. My dad is the literal definition of gaslighting. I had emotional stress over him for a very long time, as he basically destroyed my mother's life in more ways than one, and if I so much as say "well, here's hoping you don't-"

I was thinking about my ex friend (who talked shit about me behind my back and told me herself that she talked shit (she only told me because she thought the other person told me) and used the excuse of “I was drunk.”
then when she found out the other person didn’t actually tell me: she tried to gaslight me into believing she didn’t talk shit at all and deleted anything that could be screenshotted) it was bad shit. We had been best friends for 10 years and this was the end of it.
She had me so convinced (for years) that I was a bad friend for so long that sometimes I look back and think “was I actually the asshole, here?” Even though our common friends all unanimously agree that she did me dirty
This video came at the perfect time for me tbh, I really needed the reminder that some people just do this kind of thing. As long as I stay self aware and set proper boundaries, maybe I can be a good friend while also not getting taken advantage of like that, again.

Being honest, most importantly owning up to your mistakes and your bs, is goddamn hard. But it's totally worth it. It feels so much better to have that short burst of shame and then everything getting resolved rather than lie and worry you're gonna be caught. The longer you lie, the harsher the consequences when you're found out. Just. Be. Honest.
