- How to make elderberry juice from fresh elderberries -- a simple recipe that comes with health benefits! Take 2-3 ounces of the juice 2-3 times per day at the first signs of a cold. The cold should be shortened in length and severity.
Awesome video, my wife and I pick elderberries here in California, amazing how many people are unaware of the use of elderberry. We freeze the berries in 1 gallon zip locks to make it easier to de-stem. Wife makes jelly and cobbler with them and I use them to make elderberry moonshine.
I just cooked up about 5 liters of the black elderberries. I added ginger, sugar and cinnamon. I really can't wait to try it!!!!!
Renlentless Tourist That sounds like a winning combination! Let me know how it tastes!
Just a suggestion from someone that uses Elderberry and Ginger for asthma. Cook in water approximately 30 minutes, then pour into colander to strain. When room temperature, add couple cups Raw honey to sweeten. Stir Stir Stir. Enjoy
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!! Perhaps you can cut down on sugar by using some honey, dates or maple syrup. Looks delicious!
Those are great suggestions for sugar alternatives. Thank you so much!
@@FlannelAcres of course!! Keep doing all you do! 😄
You can make elderflower champagne. And juice .I am a romany gypsy and we belive in leaving an offering for the elderflower tree so as we are taking something from the tree we are also giving back something to the tree as an offering xx
I've been drinking the pure form of the Elderberry concentrate that I get at the health store I just recently found some true elderberries growing wild in my Backwoods right here on the Gulf Coast and I am very happy about that I'm watching him closely God bless you for all that you do for us and all the great advice
Treva Powell That is great news! Thank you for watching and for your encouraging words. :-)
In the fall after the leaves fall
Off you can cut a stem and get it rooted plant one in your own backyard. There are videos showing how.
Lol Did anyone notice the dog chasing something at 2:04? 🤣 So Adorable .
Either that or she had a case of the zoomies. :-)
GOOD CATCH!
Thanks for sharing your nice video I love 💕 berries
Thank you too!
Have not ever done anything with Elderberries, but plan to this year....can and dehydrate. I would love to make an apple pie and use them. Thanks for sharing.
,
freeze elderberries, then take them off stems, so easy and no mess.
Thank you for the tip!
Great video and lots if knowledge gained from the commenters!!! I harvested most if my elderberries last night. Making a two step recipe now. Elderberry snapps. It is elderberries covered with 80 proof vodka and set in cool location for 1-4 weeks. I hope i can be patient to wait to try!!! I cant wait to try your juice or find a jelly recipe to try next time
Yes, the comments have been great! I make "cordial" much the same way that you are making snapps, except I use brandy instead of vodka and I add sugar and spices. I just started a batch using elderflowers (see my recent video on that), but I'm waiting to try it yet in a couple weeks. Watch for an update on that. :-) Thank you for sharing your comments!
I've known about elderberries for years but only discovered some growing locally in central Ontario. I'm experimenting with them this first year. I made what you described as juice with brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, ginger. I was going to add honey to make a syrup but I think I'll leave it as juice. In future, I'd like to try making gummies (jelly poured into candy molds, I think). Thank you for this video!
Your recipe sounds delicious! Thank you for sharing, I'm glad you found some berries. I've thought about making gummies, too. :-)
Thanks.
You're welcome
Ok. It's time to post Grandma's apple pie with the elderberry kicker.
really like the video
Thank you!
I just made some up tonight from dried berries, honey & cinnamon.
That sounds tasty!
Man, I've had elderberries I think only once in my whole life, and that was back in 6th Grade Camp during one of our hikes. I've always thought it was cool to be able to just pick something I can eat and eat it, like wild blackberries while white water rafting, or something like that. I STILL miss being able to go up to a stream and just cup and drink the water right from there, something else I've only done once! I like that tip about drinking a few ounces a day as a first defense kind of thing.
We have Elliot's here in Sacramento where I can buy different extracts to add to water and I think they have elderberry, too. I'll have to go and buy some! Besides, if I can make my own jelly out of those extracts by using the pectin I bought at Green Acres, I could have a FIELD DAY with that!
Ah, yes, I think most of us are "wired" with the desire to eat and drink from the natural resources we are blessed with. It's a real treat. :-) I have seen elderberry concentrate from health food stores, but it can be pretty pricey. It still works well, though. I'm not sure what the cost comparison would be with dried elderberries, which can be purchased online, but it's worth checking into. Elderberry jelly is a great idea!
I found a elderberry patch and gonna wait til they are ready and pick them and make some jelly to sell in the fall at a local firehall along with some of my other jellies and peppers and pickles
Sounds like a good time! :-)
My next vacation is to Flannel Acres! Yum :)
😁
I am using a steam juicer and can get a lot done in a short amount of time. Just made 2 pint jars one for us and one for a friend.
your so lucky. I've never seen elderberries in these parts. I live in West of Georgia. but I order them and make a syrup. I think that it's way better than any meds on the market. Uses spans way further than colds and flu.
you should buy a plant and grow ,they grow very easy...
If you have a spot that gets a lot of watering, you could grow some bushes.
Great job on the video. I’ve got some wine bottles and corks. If I put them in the wine bottles will they pop the corks out because it has sugar in it? I make muscadine juice hundred percent without sugar and so far so good but I’ve never added sugar before.
Oooo, good question. I suspect it would pop the corks... maybe the corks aren't a good enough seal to process and prevent fermentation...? That's my best guess. :-)
I think I would be tempted to make a smaller batch, like a quart (as it is just the two of us). Have you refrigerated that quantity and what would expect for a shelf life?
Nonewhere Listens A smaller batch is a good idea. Not sure on fridge shelf life, maybe a week or two? Once we open a sealed jar, we try to use it up in that time. You could also freeze in an ice cube tray and take out as needed. It would keep for months (at least) in the freezer. :-)
Mine has lasted 6 mo in the fridge. If boiled first.
Also what is the best way to store the liquids and what sort of shelf life can one expect it to last???
Renlentless Tourist It's best to can the juice, which will preserve it for years. But if you find a jar with a pooped seal or mold or bad odors, throw it out. While canning is pretty reliable, it does fail once in a while.
Renlentless Tourist I’ve read it stores in fridge about 6 months
love the video . just wondering can Brown Sugar be used instead of White Sugar ?
Probably, and would change the flavor a bit, too. Thanks!
Can someone explain the reason for processing the juice? If it’s already been boiled.
Boiling it kills the bacteria, but it will only stay sterile and shelf stable if it's boiled in the jars, which seal as they cool. This way, it can be stored without refrigeration for months or years. Great question, thanks!
Would it make more sense to juice the berries first ? Or do you want the seeds in the cooking process as a benefit ?
Yes, it would make good sense to juice the berries first. Thank you!
can you turn the juice into syrup to make gummies or cough drops?
kim11757 Yes, but I don't have a recipe. if you have one, please share! :-)
I recently found that I have elderberry growing on my property and close by. I will have to try making juice with it this fall. It is probably the same elderberry you use as I live in Michigan as well. Thanks for the video!
Fantastic! Happy juice making! :-)

Down here in Houston they turn jet black when they're completely ripe.
Interesting! They must be a slightly different variety. Unless they're burnt from all that sun. Haha! :-)
@@FlannelAcres Haha, this time of year I'd be pretty apt to believe that. It's still over 90F in the shade at 7:15pm
Is it ok to mix blk and red berry??????
I think as long as you are sure they are both elderberries, it should be okay. I have heard some varieties need to be cooked to get rid of any potential poison from the seeds. Please check into that....and enjoy those berries! :-)
how did you dry them?
CW R I placed foil on my dehydrator trays so they didn't fall thru the spaces.
How do I find the fresh ones?
Fresh berries ripen around September and can be found in wet/marshy areas and road sides. It may depend on what region you live in, too.
How hot does the water needs to be to neutralize the poison from fresh elderberry.
I’m scared of over heating the elderberry and killing all its benefits
The toxicity of elderberries depends on the variety. I believe the ones we have are American Elderberry, and we have used them in tea, pie, juice, etc without anyone becoming ill. I think in all of these cases, the berries have been cooked to at least boiling temp (210F or higher). I'm sorry if I'm not much help. I always thought the berries were harmless, but the stems poisonous. Please do some research to be sure of the variety you have and the safety of consumption. :-)
Thanks for your response. I have Black Bearing Elderberry Cuttings, Sambucus and also Adams Elderberry. Now I know it’s pretty safe to eat the elderberry. Thank you again
@@2mikey8able You're welcome! :-)
I use a coarse hairbrush to de stem, very quick. Note that these berries are rather poisonous unless cooked.
The ripe ones are only slightly toxic. You'd have to eat quite a bit to make you sick. But you are right about the cooking. Even a short time eliminates the toxicity.
FYI: Research by the University of Missouri has concluded that the tiny stems the individual elderberries are attached to are NOT toxic.
Bruce Vanderhaven That is very good to know! Thank you!
Could you link to the source for that by chance?
Use a fork to strip the Berry's from the stem.
That's a clever idea. I will have to try that this year. Thank you!
i didn't get when she showed the two different juices
One juice was made by extracting the berry juice with a juicer machine. The other one wasn't.
6 cups of sugar 🤭 I think that’s a lot.
LOL, it is a lot! I haven't made this in a while. I keep dehydrated elderberries on hand to steep in tea instead. Much healthier, I think. Live & Learn! ;-)
Omg was that sugar...why???
Yes, only because it was easier to get the kids to get some. And they only had a very small amount at a time (1-2oz).
@@FlannelAcres great video....try agave...they'll love it and won't know the difference.
@@glendacrowe5202 you can drink elderberry juice any why you want cold hot think thin....it has the second highest concentration of iron on the planet....been drinking this for 27yrs...I have never been to a DR.
Never use sugar!! Use honey.
Use a dinner fork to take the berries of the stem.
Great idea! Thanks!
You lost me at 7 cups of sugar!
Yeah, I lost several from that, I'm sure. It's not that much different than jam or jelly, which is used by the tablespoon. That's about the amount we use of this, too. And at the time, I couldn't get the kids to take it without it being sweet. 🤷♀️
I don’t cook elderberries. It reduces there goodness. And adding sugar is very hard on the human body. Freeze the berries, then ferment them. Drink and get well.
Thank you so much for your comment! I have mixed feelings about the sugar -- not healthy but helps the kids want the juice. ;-) Since making this video, I have learned a lot, and will definitely consider fermenting them in the future. I first need to use up the dehydrated ones I have in the pantry. Have a pleasant day! :-)
Flannel Acres if you get some time check out Doctor Eric Berg here on you tube. He is just wonderful. My family and myself have benefited greatly from his knowledge. He’s a gold mine of health.
@@farmerdude3578 Will do, thank you!
lol i stopped understanding after she said, i have an old juicer
Hee-hee!
Heard not cook green berry , ok to cook red and blk .
I've heard something like that, too. :-)
@@FlannelAcres red ok too if mixed with blk
What a shame. Elderberries being such a health benefit was ruined when you added ALL the white table SUGAR! What a shame!
Elderberry juice without sugar serves no health benefit if it tastes so bad the kids won't touch it. ;-)
#PickYourBattles #MaryPoppins
Let's keep the 'Highlighted reply' going here; people need to SEE THIS! The white SUGAR you are using is the worst! Period! Rather than a juice why not a syrup? It's made with elderberries, purified water, and a quality raw unfiltered HONEY. Not SUGAR. It's so easy to make. Here I'll help with this very simple recipe.
3/4 cup elderberries (dry)
3 cups purified water
Cook 45 minutes to 1 hour.
strain berries by squeezing the juice and set aside to cool
Add 3/4 cup HONEY and blend
Place in refrigerator
1 tblsp daily for maintenance
2-3 tblsp daily if sick
HONEY has far more benefits than what white table sugar ever will. Are you truly aware of just how bad white sugar is for us??? If you did, you would stay away from it. Some of the readers are using honey not sugar...they know better.
Hope this finds you well.
I'm DONE with this white sugar benefits you claim.
@@pamelasue9252 I do agree that honey is better than white sugar, and I appreciate you sharing your recipe for those interested. A couple things for you to consider are that this juice I made was never intended to be consumed daily by the jarfull, rather by the tablespoon/ounce for a couple days to help fight a cold a couple times per year. It works for some people, and that small amount of sugar is not going to cause harm. Moderation is key. Thanks!
Earthy ME on Flannel Acres you do things your way but she came at you nasty!!! There is a way to get your point across without the ugliness and that’s what she was and is. Smh! So Pam now you know how you want to do your syrup with some adjustments if you choose to. This lady up top need to learn how to speak with people when giving her 2 cents so it can be receptive.
