    Highlanders do well in the PNW. I grew them last year. I got about 15 8-10 inch peppers off each plant and I didn’t really pick them as often as I should. They will need support.

    Love your setup. I finally got mine set up, I only have two lights and two warming mats. This year I’m only using what I have, maybe next year I’ll invest in another set of lights. Happy growing season!

      That sounds like an awesome setup. I don’t need the heat mats for inside (I use the opportunity to turn my heater up because I usually keep it cooler in my home) but I want to get those large 4x8 feet ones for outside. Yesterday I went to a friend’s farm and I want to recreate his propagation room.

    I also use 2 florescent t5 fixtures 2 t8 fixtures I converted to led and 1 led grow light they all work fine for seedlings but the grow light can be up to 2 ft above the seedlings and not get leggy for all the t5 florescent and t8 led bulbs they are at least 3000 lumens and 6400 kelvin I try to stay above 2000 lumens and between 5000 to 6500 Kelvin for optimal results

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  Год назад

      I have only used fluorescent. I wanted to look into LED but I worry about switching it up too much or a learning curve. I can’t fully remember but I believe these lights are 2000 lumens and 6500 Kelvin. I did the research when I purchased them but it has been so long. I’m sure I have a pile of notes somewhere, lol.

      @@littlerootsranch The conclusion I’ve come to is that all you need is the fluorescent from the results I’m getting but fluorescents do lose brightness over time and the bulbs need replaced after a while but I’m on the 4th year with the same bulbs and everything is still working fine. Now if you want to overwinter things like I am I definitely prefer my grow light for that because it’s so much brighter than the leds in my shop lights or my t5 fluorescent bulbs and can raise it up 2 feet above everything

    Hi Christy! Thanks for sharing your seedling set up. I was wondering if as a professional, you have access to seedling trays and mats that are stronger than the ones sold to retailers? I am so tired of trying to keep the trays from tweaking and cracking when moving them around with seedlings. The plastic just is thinner and thinner. And heating mats? It's just stupid how expensive they are, and they only hold up a couple of years. My house is too cold to start tomatoes without some bottom heat. There must be some better products. Thanks

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  Год назад

      I know if a few places that sell really sturdy trays but the issue is usually the minimum order. If you check out Farmer’s Friend” they have really strong trays but I believe they have a minimum. I am planning to order from them over the winter (nest winter). For heating mats, I will be getting those for the first time over the winter so I can’t vouch for them yet. I would think professional growing places would have good mats but the sizing might be too big. When I get heat mats, I would be looking at 4x8 feel though maybe they many sizes. I have not checked, but maybe Johnny Select Seeds has some good heat mats.

    What town in Washington are you in? I am in Puyallup Washington. I’d really like to make friends with other gardeners. As I know nothing about gardening. I’ve been watching your videos. I’m thankful I found you.

      Check out the pierce county master gardener program. The headquarters are in Puyallup and they have a plant sale the end of April.

    Where do you source the Juliet seeds? I haven’t found them in any of the sources I’ve looked at. I used to grow them from plants I got at Fred Meyer, but now that I’m starting all my own plants, I’ve missed the Juliet

      I ordered mine from Johnny Select Seeds. They also have a newer improved variety called Veroma (or something like that- it is a slightly sweeter version though I have not tried that one).

    Nice setup! I invested in some Bootstrap Farmer 1020 trays and I see you have their seeding trays. They're so sturdy! I had to chuckle at your curtsy and of course I watch to the end! I always look forward to your videos. I celebrated my birthday by planting seeds, too! 10th.

    Hey Christi, are you going to be selling starts in your farm stand this spring?

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  Год назад +2

      Not this spring but likely next spring. I want to have a small propagation house right next to the farmstand where customers can buy directly from it.

    What do you use for seed starting

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  Год назад +1

      It depends on what I am growing but my go to is a 50/50 blend of peat, or a peat mix like promix, and compost. Sometimes I use straight compost.

    Any reason you use lights on unsprouted seeds?

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  Год назад

      To warm the soil for heat loving seeds (tomatoes/peppers). I don’t use heat mats so the extra heat helps.
