So I have bought all these seeds but have been paralyzed by the " damping off" from last year. I lived in Michigan and everything grew! I live in St Louis where the ground is clay and bakes everything. I planted Dahlias last year because of you in a raised bed because of you. Your inspiration is killing me. I will purchase the grow light. I will purchase the seed trays. I will drink wine while I pull my weeds and ask....Why can't I be more like you. PS Humor attempted.

To prevent damping off, remove the humidity dome when the seeds sprout the first leaves out of the dirt. Keep a small fan blowing on low speed 24/7. Do not add more than a quarter inch of water to the bottom tray; wait until the bottom tray is dry before adding more water. The soil should feel damp and not wet.

Laura is a likeable and knowledgeable person. But I got tired of the immense wealth, the arrival of 60 grand of statutory and urns, the massive glasshouse, the mass planting of expensive plants from her parents greenhouse etc etc etc.

Bravo, Erin!! We all love our lights, cell packs, heat mats, etc., but you hit the nail on the head - invest in a few extra things AFTER you try it and find that you love it! And even then, take your time adding to your seed starting setup - you don't need to go all in right away because you think it's the key to success....because it's not! I think that we sometimes get so lulled into thinking that great gear = success, that we all but forget that what makes the MOST difference costs zero dollars - enthusiasm & learning through experience. There is so much focus on getting 'the best gear' for practically everything you do these days, including gardening, that we often forget that our grandparents, great-grandparents, etc., did very well - and in fact better than many of us do now! - with whatever they already had sitting around the house. Great video, Erin 💚💚💚💚

I love to hear what you and other gardeners like to use. Couldn’t agree more - start small and see if you like it before investing. Then increase your investment as you go on. One thing I would say was a game changer for me was the 8 outlet surge protector, 4 on timers that you showed. I only have two outlets available to me in the basement. Currently using 9 plugs plus another for my phone.
One thing I’ve thought about a lot is travel during seed starting season. We have a cottage we like to go to for 7-10 days at a time. With timers and self watering seed trays, you can go away for that length of time, except when seedlings are on the heat mat or new babies have just gone under the lights and need more attention. They are expensive, I put together my own for a lot less$$.

This was great! I was looking for smaller trays that fit under my grow lights that don't take up so much real estate. I can only fit 2 10x20's under my grow lights at a time. I purchased the 60 cell and 40 cell trays...now I can get 5 trays across. Bonus on the durability. On an older Vlog you mentioned clip on fans...I remember when you did they SOLD OUT on Amazon...anyway, my basement is very warm, so the clip on fans for me are a must. As always, great content, very informative and helpful.

My milk jugs were free, $30+ on seeds from Baker Creek, plant tags purchased last season on clearance for pennies, label maker from my stash, purchased a block of promix from Wally World. It worked for me last year and was so much fun. I’m scaling it back for 2023. Thanks for all the content you provide! I always learn something from your videos. Greetings from 7bNC 🌱🌷🌼

I think the hardest part is introducing them to the outdoors, and then bringing them inside at night, and then protecting them from any heavy rain until they get established, and then trying to get them moved over to a pot without all the dirt falling off the root is probably the most frustrating part for me.

I keep most of them when I purchase plants. They work just fine. I don’t do much seed starting. I don’t have the patience or time for that. I use my sunroom keep the trays in till the germinate and so far so good. As for trays to hold the little cells in I use shoe trays that I got for $5. I mix my soil in the wheel barrel. I hate spending money for stuff. My local Lowes will give you for free these containers that people bring back to recycle. Start on the cheap. I use the 3-4” pots for seeds. I just plant more seeds in them and separate later. I use everything available. Enjoy your day and happy seeding!🌷🌷

Erin, your videos are always packed with great information, so thank you for that! I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth about root trainers, I don't have any of those, but I discovered that paper towel tubes or wrapping paper tubes (cut down to 7, 8, or 9") are a wonderful alternative. For the past few years, I've been using those cardboard tubes to grow my sweet peas. I bought several springform pans (at garage sales) to hold the soil-filled tubes upright until I can transplant them into my garden. I leave the bottom of the tubes open, and I've never had a problem with the soil staying in. Drilling holes in the springform pan bottoms was the hardest part, but I'm pretty sure those pans will outlast me! 🤗 Oh, those pans also work as concrete forms to make stepping stones! ~Margie

I so want to grow some seeds again. I used to grow so many every year. I exclusively used the plugs in the styrofoam squares like yours only smaller. They were a very successful way to start them watering tiny trays that they sat in. I believe they came from Parks Seed. I like the sturdy plastic dome that comes with yours as mine got beat up over time. My big grow light has a malfunction so I would have to get some help with it. Also I may be selling my house so I'm in such a quandry about starting plants when I don't know if I will be planting here or not. I bought some dahlia bulbs and might just buy some other things already started and try to start again next year. Your channel is a great diversion for my, Erin. Thank you. Please wear your gloves more because you have to protect your hands from repeated abuse. I'm a hairstylist and began to have nerve damage in my 40's in my fingers from pinching on the clips that we use to section hair. Tonya, with the flowers has been starting seeds in recycled containers and home made frost tunnels for a very long time. She has had very good results, but, the thing about using recycled products you have to consume or buy the product. I do not drink diabetes water so those containers are not something I have access to and I don't buy bottled water or milk in plastic jugs. So, this leaves me with only one other option and that is to buy those plastic seed starting trays. I do reuse them year to year. I also have gone to the Amish who have Green houses and buy directly from them the black trays for starting seeds.

My first year sowing seeds indoors in 10 years. I am so overwhelmed.
I’ve tried sowing seeds in winter before and absolutely failed.
I can’t keep the cells/ soil watered without soaking trays by accident or everything dried out.
Ugh. I have all the equipment for 2 years now STILL in BOXES!
However, I’m trying again because my yard is so much later and I can’t buy the quantity of plants I need to fill 1 acre.
Wish me luck. I’m terrified already. 😮😮😮😂😂😂😂

The soil that you start with should already be moist. Once you lightly pack it in, it does stay in.....and then of course the roots keep it in once the plants grow.

In addition to the fertilizer comments, it's terrible quality (full of giant twigs and chunks), holds way too much moisture, and there's a LOT of anecdotal evidence about it causing major fungus gnat infestations. (That could be exacerbated by how wet it stays)

Question, what is your opinion of reusing seed mix where nothing germinated. Should you heat the mix in the oven to kill anything in it from prior use. Or should you not use it at all.

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  9 месяцев назад +1

Excellent question! I have a bin of used seed starting mix, either from trays that haven’t germinated or leftovers from things I’ve broadcast sown and I use this, without any treatment for potting up things, mixed in with regular potting mix. I probably wouldn’t use it for more seed starting, not because I’d be worried about a disease, but because those seeds that didn’t germinate have a tricky way of germinating later when you don’t want them to. I think most germination issue have nothing to do with the seed starting mix.

Most gardeners don't recommend using potting mix with fertilizer to start seedlings. Plants don't need fertilizer until the first true leaves start to form. I just read recently that roots grow better in seed starting mix. Too much fertilizer initially promotes better leaves to the detriment of a strong root system. Seems to make sense.
