    Totally agree man. It's taken me years to finally get a space where I can fit an analogue mixer. Routing my MPC's 8 outs into the Ghost desk then using aux sends to various effects for parallel processing has seriously upped my sonic game. Keep up the great vids!

    If you are doing multitrack recording, you can synchronize the MPC to your recording. Then you use the 8 outs to add more tracks to your mix, so you don’t have to use up audio tracks.
    If you are using an analog recorder, you just print MIDI code to one channel of your tape. It requires an extra box, but it’s cheap. You give up one recorded track, but you gain 10 sequence tracks.
    If you have different instruments, like a bass, and piano, you might want to mix those separately from the drum beat.
    I got the 8 outs for my 2000xl mainly because that expansion board also has the digital in out

    Some great advice in here but there's something magic about the way a lot of MPCs sum the signal to the stereo output, especially when you push it hard. Same goes for clipping the inputs on the way in - tonnes of punch to be gained from doing things this way.

    • @eddieleonard6925
      @eddieleonard6925  2 года назад

    Fantastic video about exploring beyond limitations. I haven't tried the 8 outs on my 2000xl yet but plan on doing so as some samples carry too much bass where I/O mix makes management of the sound easier. I have used Stereo Out for so long that it feels normal. Definitely gonna get another mixer to replace my defunct Alto ZMX862 and likely add a compressor of some sort. It all comes down to how the samples are flipped, layered, and pieced together by the end user transform bits from many places into a new piece in the workspace. Keep up the knowledge!!

      Thanks for checking this out. Not all 2000xl's have the 8 out expansion, so you're lucky to have that added flexibility. The stereo outs actually sound great on that machine in particular, but depending on the compressor you use, I agree that having more control over bass and general stereo separation should do your music good. And yes, it's all about the mind, not the machine. Cheers,

    Hello Eddie, thank you for your knowledge. For my part I used the 8 direct outs for years and today I stopped, and I work with the stereo hands outs. I was wasting too much time mixing and adjusting compressors and effects. Today I work in the opposite direction, that is to say that I sample and I work on my beat I use a channel or two of the direct outs, to equalize or modify and process a sound, and I resample it in the 3000. because the mix is saved in the machine with the sequence, which allows me to work on other beats, without having to mess up the mix in hardware. I use a daw for assembly as well as effects and compressors. I spent too many nights on the 3000 in song mode, I use a dawn in addition to the 3000 for editing. my work and on a Mpc 3000 and an asr 10. i make my beat, i use 1 or 2 out outputs to modify the sound and i resample it for everyone to have in the 3000, the internal mixer is really good. I'm like you at first, I swore only by the hardware vinyls and tapes, but we must admit that the qualitative subtlety is really too subtle for ordinary mortals. Hello from France Mika.

      hmm...maybe email me with more details. but i guess you could connect the main stereo out of the tascam to any stereo input on the amplifier, which would then connect to your speakers. that way you everything that comes out of the tascam can be controlled by the amplifier. Or, you could have the tascam be the final output, and connect the stereo amp to a pair of inputs on your tascam. The tascam has full connectivity, and there are lots of great videos of how people use them. Between the manual and that I'm sure you'll figure it out. Peace.

    I don't know about the 3K, but the 8 out expansion for the 4K don't sound as good as the stereo output or the headphone jack. The way I used to do it (if I remember right, this was like 10 years ago) was that I just used the stereo outs and somehow had the DAW's transport sync'd up with the MPC's, so if I hit play on the 4K, it would make the DAW play. That way I could just track things in the DAW as I composed the beat. Once it was in the DAW, after editing and applying effects or whatever, I could track the stems out from the RME Fireface interface I had running to a Soundcraft Ghost mixer, where I would do the final mix, and then sum everything to a 2 track stereo mix which would then go back into the computer. I almost never used the MPC's 8 outs. It wasn't that they sounded bad, they just didn't sound great like the stereo outs. The other reason to do it this way was that I only had a single pair of high end preamps. This way everything got saturated as it was tracked into the DAW, which made a big difference sonically when doing the final mix and stacking all those tracks together.

      That's a great workaround, especially since you had 2 solid preamps. The stereo outs on the 3000 do have some compression, so that's why people love using them. I think the 8 outs sound great, though. Lately, I've been using the stereo outs as my kick and snare, making it 10 outs total...taking advantage of the stereo compression to make kick and snare punchier. Works great. Never used the 4000, although I always wanted one. Thanks for the note.

      Congrats on getting an mpc one. With that machine, you can do everything within the box and it'll sound great. Devices now have "usb audio" which allows you to route your sounds into a computer without needing 8 analog outs. It may depend on the audio interface you use. That's a much cleaner, streamlined set up that still gives you control. Grabbing a mixer is just a more tactile way of achieving the same results. Tascam's new line of analog mixers might be a good best-of-both-worlds. Hope this helps. enjoy that mpc one!

    My XL doesnt have the 8 outs, but I don't know if you tried this but I have been doing everything in Mono. so like sample in L in and send the L out into 1 channel into my mixer. I track out one track at a time, but do the arrange in my DAW so I just grab a few versions of 8 bars per sound, which makes it pretty fast. When I run the sound through the mixer I use stereo outboard gear and change the EQ per the sound. But mainly was curious if you tried just a mono out since it is like using 8 outs but just the L from the stereo mains. It's an interesting way to make the drums slam down the middle and then widen up the synths and other stuff with stereo verbs, delays, compressors. Awesome channel!

      This is not the case with the SP1200 or akai s950. No plug-in or mixing can really replicate that sampling engine & conversion. In that case, it would make a big difference if you ran your tracks through them.
      I wish I understood why, but samples (drums especially) sound 10x better when running through an s950 or an sp1200. I used to own an sp1200 and all I did was run drum samples through it to achieve that "sound." Hope this helps,

    This is a great video. I agree with everything you said. I'm telling you back in the 90s every piece for me had to either be put on layaway or bought from a homie (ASR10, MPC, etc). Very expensive then. Now thanks to the computer and easy financing, a person with no musical interest can create an entire album (my opinion). The sound and sonics is important and I'm glad you mentioned that. Everything that is mainstream to me sounds the same. That is not good in my book 📚

      Well said. Anyone can create an entire album, as long as they know what they're doing with the equipment they have. I'm still learning equipment I've owned for years. You're spot on about how everything in the mainstream sounds the same. It might be because everyone's using the same instruments in the same daws, and processing their sounds in the same way, rather than taking the time to develop a more nuanced sound.

    Great video, I personally liked the sound of the stereo outs in this test, but you are right, exporting to mixer gives you more control…on the way out.. although, the same can be said if you stem it out and open in DAW and then pan etc.. so end of the day, it’s all about what workflow you feel most comfortable with…you can achieve the same results doing things either way.. just do what you like.. is how I feel..I subbed, nice channel

    • @eddieleonard6925

      Totally agree. What I miss most about sending stems to a daw is the ability to easily double tracks, creating more layering and processing options. That takes much more work to achieve in the analog domain.

    Defiantly control. I wish modern samplers like the octatrack had individual track outs, would make mixing much more efficient. if you make a mistake whilst recording in stereo you can’t remove it amongst the other layers in the arrangement. Absolutely agree about flipping and treatment being important too. Excellent content and beat crafting.

      Thanks for checking this out. There's nothing wrong with devices that sum internally to stereo outs, but it would be a game changer if they had individuals outs. I've never used an octatrack, but i imagine it must have great internal mixing, and is more portable than a giant MPC.

    Super Dope Vid just found your channel and I love it! gained a sub for sure. I do have question you are talking about running your individual tracks from your mpc to other analog processing are you running those outputs from the mpc directly to the outboard (Eq, Comp, Etc) then the outputs of the gear back to the board or are you using some sort of insert or send from your board to handle that? Thank you so much! Peace

      @@eddieleonard6925 I actually do! The board I use currently (Tascam M520) is 99% RCAs so I was having trouble finding cabling to support the insert points with my outboard so I started just running directly to the outboard through my 8 outs, I use a Patch bay as well so it does make it easy to change things if I need but I've got a main program saved for my 2000xl that has my routing saved that I use most of the time. I'm just glad to see someone else doing that. I came up always using insert points on a board. Only thing I've noticed is for some of my gear I really have to pull back the individual outs so I'm not clipping the gear (unless that's the vibe) Thanks for the reply.

    Thank you for the video, it’s a subject that is not that well commented. It’s a real dilema going all analog vs processing into the DAW. Some producers also mox into the mpc amd route the stereo outs into outboard gear with nice results. Put of curiosity, what mixer so you use? Peace

    So this is what I was trying to develop a scientific test for. By the time your digitally saved sample goes through your chain of analog i/o and goes all the way around the choo-choo track to the speaker and of course, the thing that really matters finally to your ear... Do you think it has introduced enough chaos like the Fibonacci sequence to wear that digital sample has now become a completely organic analog, sound? But you're running it as a master stereo outs. Perhaps this would have to be done before hand in someway is kind of where I am experimenting right now. I'm going to say probably, maybe or mostly perhaps yes. I have never seen a video like this that's you're doing what I want to do but I've got some other angles and you do too.

    • @eddieleonard6925
      @eddieleonard6925  Год назад +1

      Let me know how the experiment goes! I need to try this again...what I didn't realize was how much the overall experience factored into the end result. Sonically, I think that with a little bit more work, you can get digital to sound the same as vinyl, but I still need to try a stricter test. Peace!

      @@eddieleonard6925 there is definitely something to be felt in an a ritual/tradition.
      Digital is better for laser cut surgery and speed many times it's also predictable with zero noise floor
      But rarely do i want skittles when its meat time for steak. Just wont do. There's no straight lines in nature, bit depth, is it to our ears pixels are to tvs.
      I think this is precisely what makes the NPC so cool because you get the benefit of digital but yet it's really 80% a piece of analog gear and it's pushing that digital sample through analog hardware. I don't know how exactly does it it's more than just an amp. I was just arguing with a Grammy winning Brazil jazz engineer about this and I know I'm right he's wrong. 😂
