  • On their mission to discover the world's biggest cave, veteran cave explorer Robbie Schmittner and his partner Toddy Waelde pledge to protect this Mecca of diving beneath the Yucatan. Robbie warns against the destructive forces affecting this area. Toddy discovers an unbroken Maya pot that could be thousands of years old.
Shot 100% on the HERO4® camera from ‪GoPro.com.

Coming upon what looks to be no more than a puddle in the middle of a jungle only to jump in, realize there is no bottom, and discover an entire world below is the closest thing to a realized childhood fantasy I’ve ever seen. It’s both mesmerizing and terrifying all
    at the same time.

It really puts things into perspective when you realize that every single one of those stalactites/stalagmites indicates that these cave systems at one point in time weren't completely submerged for literally 10s to 100s of thousands of years.

That's awesome to think about and to remember that ~65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period a 10km wide asteroid hit right smack dab on where the Yucatan is today. Maybe that started the geological recipe that came together to make these caves.

Sea levels used to be a lot lower! The last Ice Age, known as the Pleistocene Epoch, began almost 1.8 million years ago and lasted until approximately 11,700 years ago. During this time, massive glaciers covered most of the surface of the Earth. Slowly but surely, the ice melts, raising the sea level.

Maybe the Mayans tried to got to the “underworld” when the sea level was far lower. They may have lived down their to escape the Spanish conquered trying to take their gold but the6 lived there for a long time and it collapsed inside or water levels raised and flooded a whole underwater civilization. We will never know exactly what happened to the Mayans and it will be forever on my mind.

Humans like nature is lazy, will take the way of least resistance even if it will cause harm.

I wince when cave divers exhale bubbles. It was recently discovered that bubbles on the ceilings of caves cause pressure to build on the roof. This leads to eventual collapses of roof sections. This is what keeps trapping cave divers and killing them.

Me and my dad used to go into a cave inside the side of a river no equipment we just dove for about 10 seconds and we was inside ..it was a beautiful cave or cavern but it had different ways to get in that we would mark and discover but later on he told me about our grandpas experience here and what he found ..there is a black and red snake that lives down there and he followed it when he seen it as kid in river but it was shiny and had 3 gems or diamond on its head and that grampa says he was told its only a bad spirit trying to kill anybody or satan him self but we did see a pack or a group of them but we was scared to get even 1 ...later we came back and got one in a bag ...i seen the gems was redish black or dark red but they was stuck on it ..they grow on the snake ...later that night my dad took of the gems and gave me 1 on sold others for a big stack to a friend...next morning my dad was dead and he had a snake bit on his arm and that dead snake was gone from the jar we left it in ...i gave away that gem i got ...i do want to go back there but im in los Angeles and that was in Guatemala ...one day in will go back but with science and documentation...

What a beautiful place and fantastic to know how old it is which made seeing the rubbish tip all the more shocking. Tourists should pay an environment tax and the money goes only to pay for cleaning-up all the plastic waste which could be made into models of the nearby temple and other Mayan themed tat and sold back to the visitors.

What if another diver put that pot in there? you know, like you guys mark the distance with knots perhaps another eccentric diver marked it with mayan pots.
