Whatever, it's a lego set. Now where's that Gundam? By the way, what's your thoughts on the upcoming stuff? (Legacy Armada Starsrcream and SS 86 (error) Ratchet mainly, but also the insane leak with Lio Convoy and Armada Megatron)
It's great seeing someone share their experiences like this. My parents were similar and the only Transformers I bought were micromasters, because I could hide them.
My parents specifically one of them was against me collecting transformers and kept asking me to tackle more mature things but never denying me. It got to a point when I was buying Space origins bumblee. he wouldn't let me buy him and instead kept asking me to show what kids my age were into. Let's just say after 5 minutes of showing him tik tok he's glad I'm into transformers as my main hobby instead of what my peers were into...
Im soo hapy my parents are not like that they want me to do things like karate and gym but they think that is i was to give up on the things i love like lego. Gaming. Transformers i wouldmt be myself wich is very true lol the tiktok. Thing is so accurate its just full of idiots who have nothing else to do so they do stupid stuff
As both a LEGO and Transformers fan this set is really big deal. Imagine the possibilities of this one set having it own theme one day. I would love if LEGO can takle Bumblebee or Soundwave next.
This brings me back in such a strange way. Once again, for the first time since I was a kid, it’s time to see you talk about a Lego transformer. This is considerably larger than those when I was younger, but it is incredibly nostalgic and exciting to see once again
I'm with ya 100% man. As a kid who grew up primarily with LEGO before diving deep back into Transformers a few years ago, I can't begin to think objectively about this set. It was a landmark, an event. I remember getting hyped for the leaks, setting aside money to get it and eventually staying up with some friends to order it when it went live. It's the capstone of over a decade of my personal nerd hobbies, and both reconnected me with LEGO, but connected me to so many friends and friendly faces. It felt like almost everyone I knew was hyped for this thing. It's the most expensive hobby thing I've ever bought and heck just the feelings it brought out were worth it. From the second it arrived at my house it just felt special, from the box to the instructions to the build to the final thing standing triumphant in my booth. It's an incredible thing, because beyond being a cool novelty collectors item, for so many it's a symbol of the kinds of impossible things that can happen with our little hobbies and communities. Heck I don't know who I'd be if I never ran into you and the rest of the guys back on MOCpages, what I'd be doing or what I'd be into. Y'all were a massive catalyst for yeah, nerd robot stuff, but also genuinely helping me to discover and realize passions and interests I might've been too self-conscious to pursue. To meet friends who pushed me to be my best myself and to do things that make me happy. So in a big way, being here and having this set standing on my desk is a monument to all of you. Also just holy heck it's flippin' LEGO OPTIMUS PRIME
Not gonna lie doc, from all the videos I had seen about this guy, your is the most emotinal. From start to finish, if I could use one word to describe this video, it would be "passion". And a great passion for it at that.
Just as Jobby announced his review of this Figure, You Bring in This. A Perfect COINCIDENCE ! Love your Videos Dude, The intro with „Childish“ had me Genuienly Sad. You are NEVER too Old for Something. No matter what anyone Says. If anyone Tells you „yOuRe ToO oLd ¡“, Reply with „Is the child inside you Dead ?“ Keep up the Good Work.
@@masterfarr8265 Don't Listen. Just say what i already said: "You are NEVER Too old For Something." And if she doesn't Understand that, then it's her Problem. Not yours.
I dont know Why…. And i dont know How… But this thing Completley SCREAMS MP-01. As soon as i saw this i thought: Did they Re-Release the MP 01 ? Then i saw the Lego Badge. I gotta Get an MP-01.
9:54 : Dum Lacquer just means that there was a rotating drum with paint in, and the peices were chucked in there for even coating, with the rotational movement keeping it from getting too thick Ayyy I knew that brief time I did Product design in college would come in handy some time!
This was a really great episode. My parents were always supportive of me buying what I wanted, even if sometimes they didn't understand the appeal themselves. They were even the first to introduce me to Lego at the age of 3, which is probably my favorite hobby, Transformers in second. I've been a huge Lego fan over the years, and having gotten into Transformers last year, this set is something I never imagined happening. Sadly, I won't be getting it for a little while (My summer Lego budget is going entirely to Ninjago, which is doing a sort-of climatic "Final Battle" to wrap up its first eleven years' stories) but I will get it in the near future. On another topic, I commented on the SS85 Arcee video about getting Kingdom Rodimus and SS86 Hot Rod, and my impressions of each. Well, I was at a used toy store earlier today and got PotP Rodimus Unicronus for quite cheap, which completes your review trifecta. I love him. He's probably the most fun of the three, though I think I still like the Kingdom version the best for the transformation and posability. I especially love how the combined frame compresses into the trailer. I'm looking forward to messing him and finalizing my opinion. Well, since this video is about building, I'm off to build my second Gundam model. Thank you Target 30% off!
Glad to see another Ninjago fan. I personally am doing the same, but once that’s out of the way, it’s either Monkie Kid or Transformers for me, and I’m likely going for the latter (though I will try both if possible)
For what it counts, at someone with nerve damage in their dominant arm, I get most of my freehand shots by pressing both of my wrists together, so that both arms push against each other just a little bit. It's actually something I learned back when I painted a lot of D&D minis. Yes, a very small, handheld tripod or even grip can help in this technique , since it gives you a handle instead of directly holding the phone/camera, but it works without just as well too.
This figure really fulfills a unique kind of place in my heart as someone who grew up with both for so long and this video does the same too. I really relate to the feeling of being called "immature" for trying to collect figures when the truth is that they are meant for everyone regardless. It's especially curious since this set is actually rated for adults. This was a very nicely done video and probably my favorite one for this guy ever! Simply breathtaking. In regards for more LEGO Transformers being made in the future, I think there's quite a bit of potential for Soundwave and his casette minions, though I'd imagine only one would be made rather than all of the ones he had. Just hope he comes with leg articulation proper.
In the titanic image, the 1×6 plate in gray is missing from the parts list, also if you remove the 1×3 wing plates behind his legs and replace them with regular 1×3 plates (such as the ones connecting his fingers) you can gain a backwards kick.
I think that's why I like Siege Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime so much. I grew up with the original Cyberton Optimus and loved it. So getting to own it again and have it line up aesthetic and scale wise with other current transformers is a real treat.
Now that you mention it, I'm really excited for Legacy Override, as that was my first ever Transformers figure! That as much as anything should rekindle some good childhood memories!
9:25 camera strap. Have it round your neck, extend your hands so the strap is completely under tension; then let the camera movt come from moving your torso / shifting on your stance while your hands stay as fixed and stable as possible
The opening of this video is the most impactful and relatable distillation of that stigma too many of us have to deal with and the importance of embracing what makes you happy in spite of that since Extra Credit's video on maturity in games Fantastic video
Oi doc I feel you a bit man, as a basement dwelling Mexican I know how it feels to have relatives belittle you just for liking something relatively inoffensive. But hey for the arguing, complaining and whining our fanbases do, at least us nerds got each other no? Take it easy dude you already got covid you more than deserve to enjoy the things you like with or without the approval of others.
You know when you talked about nostalgia you make me remember something that will always stay with me back in 2007-2010 "max steel faces his greatest enemy elementor" -max steel (1999-2012) Also great vídeo i believe legó could have make the leg articulation because alot of new mechs have this articulation and have similar sizes to optimus for example the new samurái x mech from ninjago but apart from that this set is *truly more than meets the eye*
I think I've commented this somewhere else on your channel in regards to another figure but, I whole heartedly blame this review for me getting this set. Still have yet to build it though.
I came across it in a meme while I was editing, and realised I HAD to put it in a video somewhere. Turns out it fit perfectly in this one. ruclips.net/video/QgCTjg49A4c/видео.html
As a longtime comstraction inclined lego fan I REALLY wish we could see a return to Technic/CCBS approaches to joints. The ones since have been far too small to properly take weight and provide a good range of motion.
hey, doc!, just to clear up some information, we pretty much know why exactly lego mechs don't have knees, and it is entirely due to Exo-force. the sets were down-right unstable (I should know, I own some of the first waves) with the legs positioned way to the back of the body. kids that bought the products had trouble getting the toy to stand, and when it did stand, the knees tended to buckle causing the whole thing to explode. safe to say lego tried again with one and a half waves, those things died hard and lego canned the whole line. ever since we haven't seen a mech with knees, when we do see knees they're usually on the smallest mechs that have no way to be top heavy, or the knees and ankles are heavily truncated. from what we know, the "law" so to say, is that the mech "has to be able to stand on it's own power without any (or much) correction in leg placement when put down on a surface" and with next times for lego transformers, don't expect any decepticons. lego's whole anti-war credo shoots megatron and starscream out of the sky. bumblebee for sure though!
To reduce handshake try to get yourself a gimbal, one that will fit the camera, there are many types, so it will depend which one will be more suited for what you want to do.
Apparently so. He works at MMC though, so this is just a passion project. It'll take a while since he's working full time AND doing professional 3P design work
My first 2 toy lines I ever collected were transformers and lego and I love them both so this was a must have for me. Also 21:38 just hit me like a truck
Great video. A cheap way to stabilize a camera is the Wondalu PRO Video Camera stabilizer. You can also just copy it's design with stuff around the house.
To answer to the whole fandom consciousness question, I would say a animated megatron with his before earth design, I was never a fan of transformers growing up but I remember loving this toy to shred
Awesome video doc! As someone who hadn't put together a Lego transformer since 8 old, I hope more official projects can come out of this collab. A Soundwave would be so easy to make. Personally I would want a Megatron because of how interesting his transformation is, but the fact he is illegal sucks.
I have a feeling someone's already said this, but since you asked - what you need is a camera stabiliser (AKA a camera gimbal). That could help out a ton - try finding one that matches your budget and is good for your camera setup!
I know this is old but there is weapon storage for the axe In the feet there are star holes and given how the axe is constructed you can stick it in one of them like a flag It’s not the greatest but it’s there
Really glad you’ve put Vaughn on a bus for now, because if I’m honest, the way his dialogue sounds in your editing process makes him seem obnoxiously loud when played through speakers, especially when headphones are being used
That's mostly because he didn't have the compression applied to his lines that stabilises the audio. I do want to bring him back at some stage, but don't worry; I'll take into account the concerns with audio issues
For camera advice their are some small hand held gimbals that greatly help with stability, what you get does rely on what kind of camera you use though.
Ah. Well I was referring to tugs specifically. My old friend is dead set on preserving the behind the scenes stuff, but it's being held by a money laundering company or something.
I'm sorry to hear about your parents' lack of interest in things like Transformers, Doc. Some parents are sadly like that, prioritizing preparing their kid for the "real world" over letting them actually have fun and enjoy their childhood. Just because someone still likes something from their childhood doesn't mean there's something wrong with them. All it means is they're able to enjoy it- simple as that. CS Lewis put it best. “Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” For me, the figure with significant emotional value attached to it was _Siege_ Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime. My very first Transformers figures were Cybertron/Galaxy Force Lugnutz, Backstop, and Scattorshot. While I wasn't a TF fan until 2014 when Angry Birds Transformers dragged me into this fandom, I did appreciate those little guys for what they were. And once I became a TF fan, I gained a soft spot for the 2/3rds of the Unicron Trilogy that was actually good (Armada Starscream is still the best Seeker design). So you can imagine my joy when my father gifted me Galaxy Upgrade OP for Christmas 2019. I didn't ask for it, but since he couldn't find Siege Springer on shelves that year, I ended up with the surprisingly in-depth Ultra Magnus retool instead. Would I call it the best WFC Optimus? Of course not, the main Siege OP exists. Is it on par with the original Galaxy Convoy? Heck no, that's like comparing MP-10 to MP-1. But does it capture that iteration of Optimus's aesthetic? More importantly, is it fun to fiddle with? Yes and yes. By owning Galaxy Upgrade Prime, I feel like my Transformers collection had come full circle. What started with three Scout Classes of varying quality (Scattorshot > Lugnutz > Backstop) had ballooned out and crescendoed with a glorious homage to the show those Scout Classes came form. It's definitely not a perfect recreation like Legacy Override and Metroplex, but it was certainly an excellent effort. And until Hasbro puts out a good Earth mode Optimus Prime that isn't proportionally wonky like Earthrise Prime, then Galaxy Upgrade OP will remain the definitive version of the character in my collection.
I do love this figure so much, it's a dream figure for me. One note, you've sightly misbuilt the axe, it's supposed to attach with 2 modified 1x1 at the blade, not just one, that should lessen the stability issue
That seems fair, Lego could've duplicate the build for the blade so that the axe would be more secure and look more finished, as it is, it's probably the worst accessory.
This is funny to me in hindsight considering my family hates Transformers but loves LEGOS to the point where they got mad at me for not asking for LEGO this Christmas anymore and asking for Transformers lol
I got this lego prime from my kids for fathers day and got to spend a couple evenings putting it together while my wife put together the Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck. It is my first and only lego experience outside of the whole "bucket of lego" thing. It's amazing and I want more!
@@DrLockdown absolutely! The only issue I can forsee is space to display them. If we ever get a dinobots set I might have to sell a kidney for em though.
Yeah Lego is harder to take out and mess with. For regular bots I can store them and appreciate them by using them for filming. Not sure how I'm going to do that with Lego
I'd say the lack of knees isn't that much of an issue as given the kind of toy lego optimus is stability should be the main priority as if he falls over, for any reason whatsoever, then have fun putting it back together for like an hour, 2 if you can't find all the peices and have to look for them, its likely that lego just sees knee joints as too much of a hassle, and as too much of a gateway for complaints of the set falling over
@@DrLockdown true but given how easily transformers can fall over (frankly trying to get some to stay in a pose is a pain) and given how big this set is I can see why they excluded knees in this instance, if it were smaller though like say deluxe size, well that would be a different story Also what solution can there be? Ratchets wouldn't work as ones made by lego aren't very strong, hinges are just not an option given this is lego, and ball joints, do I even need to say it?
Multi hinge systems like Ninjago. Apparently the design team constantly tries to do stuff like that, but higher ups say no. It's not a huge deal at the moment, but it is something they should fix going forward.
@@DrLockdown well if only I knew what those type of hinges were (I've been out of the loop with Ninjago since the ghost arc) also can I just ask why they didn't use the Nexo Knights Axle mech Axe piece for this thing, sure its a different shade of orange but frankly it looks nicer and more like an axe
Not sure if my last comment went through, but for video stabilization I'd take a look at the DJI OM-5 or the like. Even the Osmo 3 should do what you're looking for.
I’ve been blessed to have a father who grew up and adored the transformers. I’m 21 and still collect. He gets just as excited about new figures I get as I do posting them on Facebook 😂. I even have parents who like to go on figure hunts too. I am very blessed to have a family that supports and even enjoys my weird hobby/obsession.
ik I might get flak for this, but PotP Inferno. My first modern transformers figure as a kid, was Energon Inferno, and pardon the pun, he was pretty "fire". I would take him everywhere I went, even school for show and tell (I was 5 at the time). I was sad he was nowhere to be seen in some later lines of transformers toys, but was surprised to see him in PotP of all lines. The moment I saw it, the gears started turning in my head. I may have missed Combiner wars (literally didn't know it was going on, was preoccupied with other things at the time), but this was not gonna be a repeat. I got Inferno, was surprised he could become a combiner torso, and started gathering parts for my "Burnicus". I was lucky to find some limb-formers from combiner wars for a decent price, and some Potp ones too. I enjoyed putting together my own combiner team, it felt like I was revisiting a part of my life that I hadn't experienced for so long. It felt, good.
(In all honesty, LEGO Star Wars is probably the best Star Wars merchandise ever, and I know this as speaker from experience with them. Yes, eventually I managed to tackle other LEGO things, like DC.)
Just an idea to help with the shaky camera footage. Maybe you can try jerry rigging a camera mount to a posable microphone stand that clamps to the table like what many streamers use. Might not work but I’m no expert.
My first TF figure was the mcdonalds animated prime, not the best but it's still animated, I think the best prime I could think of would be one where the shins transform from the back of the front cab section that movie primes tend to have, along with the wheels rotating around like the DOTM voyager prime, and the front cab section transforms like any other prime, don't know how the actual transformation for the torso would actually go, but still, just like any other optimus, maybe with the lego prime's handling of the headlights, who knows, also with the amount of mocs out there I'm pretty sure someone can turn that build into a cyberverse prime with a bit of ease
Speaking as someone who’s been a hardcore fan of Lego (Hardcore as in Ninjago and Monkie Kid are some of my favorite TV shows ever (I HIGHLY recommend checking out the Latter (Monkie Kid), it’s fantastic), and I have been a core supporter of Lego since I was… 7 ish?) and a mild fan of Transformers: this set is truly magical. I remember so many Lego fans begging for something like this to happen back in the day, with the closest thing we had to it being the Lego Voltron set. So I think you can imagine my excitement when this got announced. I remember going to the Lego store with my brother to pick it up a few months ago. I didn’t get to build it myself due to work, but I remember how magical it felt to see the full thing and actually mess around and move it. I really hope we get to have more in the future. The ones that I personally would want are: Megatron Bumblebee Starscream Optimus Primal Beast Wars Megatron And (This is DEFINITELY not happening, but f*ck it) Unicron Next up on Lego Icons: Godzilla (I hope)
@@DrLockdown Also, one thing that surprised me was that nobody has done an official Godzilla/Transformers crossover, and that surprised me since both Marvel Comics and IDW Comics both had/have the IPs. But I did do some research and apparently Toho stated that neither Marvel nor IDW were allowed to crossover any other franchises with Godzilla.
I think it's the nature of Japanese companies. Toho is famously stingy when it comes to copyright. They even sent a cease and desist to a non profit fan film
Sophie: “Lego Optimus Prime?” Zenkichi: “Is that what you kids call him nowadays? I remember back in the day when he was called Convoy...” Ryuji: “Who cares about the names? This is ff’ing awesome!” Yusuke: “This is pure art!” Akechi: “Things were better when Lego wasn’t dominated by licensed sets appealing to easily-impressionable morons...”
You forgot to put a sticker on a secondary 2x4 plate with the robot mode crotch plate. And the core bit of the whole figure is the only one that will come apart in transformation. Do I think they could have made it more stable yes and they chould have made a new part for the connection from the top to the robot to the bottom
@@DrLockdown I can understand that but it looks severely out of place to me but if you do some research on how to make it less like that and you might find them on redit or google. You could even use ratchets to keep the bumper in place in vehicle and robot mode
@@Rikodoesstuff69 I'm aware of the modifications, but I feel altering this set would kinda ruin the whole novelty of it. It's a landmark release, combining my two childhood loves. I don't really wanna change things, so I'll just leave them as they are.
Honestly as a kid, I was super into LEGO and Transformers but as I grew up, I picked Transformers as my main thing as I lack the space (and money dear l o r d this hobby) for both. This was revealed during my birthday month so it ended up being my gift. Pretty much feel the same, it will for sure make it to my top list, or at least top 3. Such a stellar experience. Oh, and I love the Kre-O Battle Changers. They are for sure not perfect, most of the Autobots are objectively terrible, but they are very fun little builds that allow for a lot of creativity. Even reskinned the Bumblebee from the line into a Barricade just for fun.
@@DrLockdown If I can recommend one, it's Shockwave. I think he's probably the best the line got (at least of the ones I have, which is most of them). He was also a fairly easy one to get here but IDK your luck with finding them there.
@@DrLockdown Yeah that's fair. They aren't the best, but I find charm in them. Honestly would've loved to see Kre-O continue around them with making those packs as well as bigger sets for them to interact with based on popular TF locations like the Ark, the Nemesis, maybe the base from Prime, etc.
Aren't the yellow arrows on Prime's arms a reference to the original G1 Optimus Prime toy? They did point in the direction you had to pull the hands out in order to transform it.
When I heard of LEGO Optimus, I thought of it as some compromised overpriced crossover that showed LEGOs shift to brand recognition than parts count and engineering But you’ve given me a new insight on how much fulfillment this has given people. I’m still not convinced that it’s worth the full price but I do have a new appreciation for what it’s trying to do for people now.
The tugs callout threw me into a loop. Thomas and Tugs really went hand in hand for my childhood years, and to be honest…they’ve stuck with me. Obviously not like transformers, plus buying thomas toys doesnt exactly look flattering. But every now and then, i watch an episode from the classic thomas seasons, every now and then, i binge tugs and jam to the smexy intro, and every now and then…i open my mental scrap book
@@DrLockdown ah, missed that section. Thanks. By any chance, do you think a Bumblebee or Soundwave is more likely to happen, since Lego can’t do tanks or guns?
Probably bumblebee, because of marketability. I think the proportions are going to suffer due to the limitations of building in bricks, but he's the most popular by far
@@DrLockdown aw damn sorry loved the video btw, feeling really tempted to buy this one. Love it when your videos do that. Literally went out and got an air-razor the day after watching that video.
Alright so I hear that commenting on videos is helpful to the creator. And I like a lot of your stuff and I hope you're able to keep doing this and thrive.. I was a casual collector from childhood. I'm an original fan born in 78 so I got all the regular nostalgia... Didn't have much money so when I was a kid I didn't have very many of these and I loved the hell out of the ones I did…. I also became "too old" for Transformers but My family wasn't as harsh as it sounds like yours may have been. I've vacillated over 15 or 20 years between Buying the odd figure that looked cool and hiding my love of this Toyline from almost everybody... And then Siege came out! I mean I really like the classics line, And maybe it was a simple timing thing,But I jumped in with both feet over the last what is it now 4 years... I can't think of the one single toy that was made specifically for me. My 3 favorites from childhood were Slag the Triceratops wheel Jack and trail breaker, And while they have all gotten very cool modern updates I think my love is making me a harsh critic🤣... But the fact that I can get super detailed super articulated brand new versions of the entire cast that was out of reach in my childhood... That has been fucking amazing! Anyway, Cheers to you!
Definitely on my list to buy sometime this year. Absolutely love building Lego sets but have unfortunately dropped off in the past year or so do to budgetary restraints. That and Hasbro has decided they can again design, and release competent Transformers again as 2023 was an outstanding year and return to the hobby. While it's unfortunate the Prime doesn't have knees stability I feel is more important in a Lego set than articulation though this still has plenty of great articulation points. Really think it's ingenious how the fists are hidden behind the grill section and how that technique actually carried over to the most recent Reactivate Prime. Side note. Generations Deluxe Prime is legit one of the worst Primes in existence.
Good review from you, Lockdown, I'm actually impressed with how well you conveyed the points for this figure. Also surprised you were friends with MKinstumentalist, bloody hell small world. Sad to hear the bullshit you put up with in your childhood. I'm a relatively recent collector, despite being 8ish when animated came out and started with Titans return. I definitely got some weird looks from my parents. I often get talked to severely when buying too much, but I always make sure to still save, and they are at least okay with the fact I pay for the stuff myself; even getting my switch was a relief since I saved up for that in my first job during covid. It was so cathartic living in a "video games are bad house", relying on emulation and playing with friends consoles most of my life and finally getting a console myself. My parents thankfully understood over time, but I hope you're able to move on from what happened to you. Keep up the good work mate Cheers
Thanks mate, and keep up the love for the hobby. Even if you have to take a few years off until you're an adult with a disposable income, you can always come back to it like I did. Also yeah, MK is a friene from an old uni. Never knew about Tugs until I met him. He showed me some tricks with extracting audio, such as the tools he uses
Great review Dr L. Came for a silly review, not a feels trip 😅 As a collector of both Lego and Transformers, this is right up my alley but...im not a big G1 fan and this doesn't do it for me sadly. Does look great, but maybe on a sale I'll pick it up Also, you mentioned no official transformers have weapons that peg into the arms, though I'm almost certain that SS Blitzwing has his weapon peg into his arm
Literally messing with my own LEGO Transformers as we speak. Great timing! As someone who has been in the LEGO Transformers scene for quite a long time, this figure is disappointing to me. It's great to finally be getting a proper licensed LEGO Transformer (LEGO has made transforming figures before, but never anything from the actual Transformer IP), but this is just lackluster in comparison to what I have seen from many others in the space. There are definitely ways, especially at this scale, of making a vastly-improved figure that still checks off all of the boxes that this figure needed to do. I have seen figures at half this scale that look better, are still solid, still have an easy transformation, and have better articulation. Considering that LEGO has made transforming figures before, and considering the *many* fan creations that blow this out of the water, I personally do not find much to like here. If this came out 5 - 10 yeas ago I wouldn't be complaining as much, but in 2022 this figure just isn't up to par, especially for the price. Thank you for this review! Always nice to hear about more people who were at one point a part of the LEGO Transformers community, something that we hope will continue to grow in the future :D
I think some leeway can be given to this particular set: MOCs are like third party in many ways. They're not restricted by budget, safety testing, manufacturing limitations and corporate mandates. For MOCists, the sky is the limit, whereas for a set like this the higher ups are like 'yeah no we ain't doing knees'. Important to criticise, but not something to get angry over.
@@DrLockdown Oh for sure, getting angry over this would be stupid in this instance. it is true that a MOC isn't constrained by the limitations that this set was constrained to, however that does not mean a MOC can't deliver something that still fits all the requirements that this does, and in this instance I know that's the case. Still, this is an important first step into what I hope is the beginning of a new theme in LEGO.
I'm not. I love the toy, but don't have any specific unique angle to review him from. It wouldn't make a particularly interesting video. Do keep an eye on this channel though...I may have something in the works that's close to that...
Love the video. Great work once again. Now that you've covered this, would you do videos on the KREO Transformers? Ps. Opinions on Legacy Dragstrip and Motormaster?
If Hasbro wanted to make modern figures that’s more accurate to the toy’s original engineering and scale instead of the style of WFC while still finding ways to make the figure’s articulation not feel as dated, this could be a decent start to that idea
I think WFC and legacy are doing quite well. Don't think they need to shift any closer to accuracy. Nearly every time SS86 does it, the result ends up being boring
Possibly. They could really do any of the popular g1 characters next. Marketing reasons will likely be what the decisions are based on, not 'what works'
It's just been brought to my attention that I misaligned the front wheels.
God dammit. How did I not notice that?
Whatever, it's a lego set. Now where's that Gundam?
By the way, what's your thoughts on the upcoming stuff? (Legacy Armada Starsrcream and SS 86 (error) Ratchet mainly, but also the insane leak with Lio Convoy and Armada Megatron)
All seems great to me, except wheelie. Looks garbage.
@@DrLockdown well... wheelie=garbage. common sence. Plan on getting Ded Star?

It got to a point when I was buying Space origins bumblee. he wouldn't let me buy him and instead kept asking me to show what kids my age were into. Let's just say after 5 minutes of showing him tik tok he's glad I'm into transformers as my main hobby instead of what my peers were into...
Oh dear...yeah the clock app is weird
Im soo hapy my parents are not like that they want me to do things like karate and gym but they think that is i was to give up on the things i love like lego. Gaming. Transformers i wouldmt be myself wich is very true lol the tiktok. Thing is so accurate its just full of idiots who have nothing else to do so they do stupid stuff
As both a LEGO and Transformers fan this set is really big deal. Imagine the possibilities of this one set having it own theme one day. I would love if LEGO can takle Bumblebee or Soundwave next.
Yeah I'm hoping we get a retail line eventually. I'm buying almost everything from it if they do
Agreed
This brings me back in such a strange way. Once again, for the first time since I was a kid, it’s time to see you talk about a Lego transformer. This is considerably larger than those when I was younger, but it is incredibly nostalgic and exciting to see once again
I really wish I had all the instructions. They're on a hard drive somewhere, but I don't know where.
Goes to show the importance of backing things up.
Thanks mate. Ultimately I just try to be as honest as possible. If a figure makes me feel a certain way, I'm not going to sugar coat it
The fact that you mentioned TUGS made me so happy. Excellent review as always, Doc!
Yeah an old acquaintance at my former university was really into it. Think he goes by MK Instrumentalist

Interesting. Why the hell didn't google tell me that?
Some habitats don’t die hard, and sometimes it can become apart of your life, and sometimes for the better.
This set almost got me back into building Lego TFs, but with some of the copyright situations I don't think it's feasible at the moment
Respect my fellow ninjago fan
Huh...that may work...
0:39 seeing toa ignika again just warms my heart
If the Lego team just used the same technique to build the knees as the Zane’s titan mech, it would have been pretty stable
That's what I was thinking, and hey they didn't.
They've had decades to figure it out. It's a bit silly.
@@DrLockdown true, though I don’t get too angry when big mechs don’t have knees, but it’s appreciated in my opinion
I was such a stick in the mud with that figure until I finally got it. God I was wrong: it's bloody amazing
That works for normal outdoor shots, but I'm filming these on the floor sadly. Lightbox is too big
The opening of this video is the most impactful and relatable distillation of that stigma too many of us have to deal with and the importance of embracing what makes you happy in spite of that since Extra Credit's video on maturity in games
Fantastic video
Oi doc I feel you a bit man, as a basement dwelling Mexican I know how it feels to have relatives belittle you just for liking something relatively inoffensive. But hey for the arguing, complaining and whining our fanbases do, at least us nerds got each other no? Take it easy dude you already got covid you more than deserve to enjoy the things you like with or without the approval of others.
Thanks mate. Fortunately the idiot isn't in my life anymore anyway.
Yeah nerd powerrrrr
As a legoformer builder, I can confirm this is very cool
You know when you talked about nostalgia you make me remember something that will always stay with me back in 2007-2010
"max steel faces his greatest enemy elementor"
-max steel (1999-2012)
Also great vídeo i believe legó could have make the leg articulation because alot of new mechs have this articulation and have similar sizes to optimus for example the new samurái x mech from ninjago but apart from that this set is *truly more than meets the eye*
Yeah it's a conceptual issue not a structural one. Lego is choosing not to include knees, as opposed to just not being able to do them.
I think I've commented this somewhere else on your channel in regards to another figure but, I whole heartedly blame this review for me getting this set. Still have yet to build it though.
Enjoy mate. It's a bloody brilliant thing
I recently was able to get my hands on this guy, and i have never felt this happy ever owning a toy before

As a longtime comstraction inclined lego fan I REALLY wish we could see a return to Technic/CCBS approaches to joints. The ones since have been far too small to properly take weight and provide a good range of motion.
hey, doc!, just to clear up some information, we pretty much know why exactly lego mechs don't have knees, and it is entirely due to Exo-force. the sets were down-right unstable (I should know, I own some of the first waves) with the legs positioned way to the back of the body. kids that bought the products had trouble getting the toy to stand, and when it did stand, the knees tended to buckle causing the whole thing to explode. safe to say lego tried again with one and a half waves, those things died hard and lego canned the whole line. ever since we haven't seen a mech with knees, when we do see knees they're usually on the smallest mechs that have no way to be top heavy, or the knees and ankles are heavily truncated. from what we know, the "law" so to say, is that the mech "has to be able to stand on it's own power without any (or much) correction in leg placement when put down on a surface"
and with next times for lego transformers, don't expect any decepticons. lego's whole anti-war credo shoots megatron and starscream out of the sky. bumblebee for sure though!
To reduce handshake try to get yourself a gimbal, one that will fit the camera, there are many types, so it will depend which one will be more suited for what you want to do.
Got one that fits, but the light box is too small. Doesn't fit
24:21 Wait, is that dude trying to recreate the scrapped TFA Hotshot toy?
Apparently so. He works at MMC though, so this is just a passion project. It'll take a while since he's working full time AND doing professional 3P design work
My first 2 toy lines I ever collected were transformers and lego and I love them both so this was a must have for me.
Also 21:38 just hit me like a truck
I’m gonna be honest if they do make more Lego Transformers it’s probably gonna be Bumblebee and I will buy it because I love this Optimus prime
Yeah does seem like the most marketable
Great video. A cheap way to stabilize a camera is the Wondalu PRO Video Camera stabilizer. You can also just copy it's design with stuff around the house.
Thanks mate. Will look into it
To answer to the whole fandom consciousness question, I would say a animated megatron with his before earth design, I was never a fan of transformers growing up but I remember loving this toy to shred
Oh I had the deluxe version of that. It's not a bad figure.
We're really overdue for 3P animated updates. Guess it just isn't popular in china
Awesome video doc!
As someone who hadn't put together a Lego transformer since 8 old, I hope more official projects can come out of this collab. A Soundwave would be so easy to make. Personally I would want a Megatron because of how interesting his transformation is, but the fact he is illegal sucks.
Yeah apparently some guy started threatening people on a shopping centre parking lot with mp05, so Australia introduced the replica firearm laws.
It's not just a toy, it's a Masterpiece.
I have a feeling someone's already said this, but since you asked - what you need is a camera stabiliser (AKA a camera gimbal). That could help out a ton - try finding one that matches your budget and is good for your camera setup!
I already own one. Too big for the lightbox

I know this is old but there is weapon storage for the axe
In the feet there are star holes and given how the axe is constructed you can stick it in one of them like a flag
It’s not the greatest but it’s there
I don’t have optimus (yet) but i did get today that creator 3-1 set. it’s really cute
I bought the smallest gimbal I could find. Too big for the light box :(
@@DrLockdown you could use window light with some white reflector cards, if the light box is getting in your way.

For those curious, the "Thomas spin-off about tugboats" mentioned at the start is Theodore Tugboat which, fun fact, takes place in Halifax Harbour.
Actually it's called 'Tugs', far as I know
@@DrLockdown TIL Tugs exists. Apparently one of the guys behind it went on to make Theodore Tugboat later on.
Ah. Well I was referring to tugs specifically. My old friend is dead set on preserving the behind the scenes stuff, but it's being held by a money laundering company or something.

"its not going to be a masterpiece release", honestly its still better than most modern masterpieces, and the flaws are a lot more tolerable
Definitely better than most of the 2020-2021 g1 ones, but recently skids/reboost and shouki have been fantastic
When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
For me, the figure with significant emotional value attached to it was _Siege_ Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime.
Mine fell apart so much that I just gave up, even when built correctly
That seems fair, Lego could've duplicate the build for the blade so that the axe would be more secure and look more finished, as it is, it's probably the worst accessory.
This is funny to me in hindsight considering my family hates Transformers but loves LEGOS to the point where they got mad at me for not asking for LEGO this Christmas anymore and asking for Transformers lol
Have you tried weighted Gloves. They should make it harder to keep your arms up, but also they should dampen Micro Tremors.
That...may actually work. Thanks mate!
@@DrLockdown No problem.
Another reason why this set dosent have a knee is because it's to big. Someone like bumblebee I can see having one but forget anyone else.
Yeah about that
@jmurray1110 yeah I know.
I got this lego prime from my kids for fathers day and got to spend a couple evenings putting it together while my wife put together the Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck. It is my first and only lego experience outside of the whole "bucket of lego" thing. It's amazing and I want more!
Damn, that's a wonderful present. These things are hella addicting aren't they? :P
I'd say the lack of knees isn't that much of an issue as given the kind of toy lego optimus is stability should be the main priority as if he falls over, for any reason whatsoever, then have fun putting it back together for like an hour, 2 if you can't find all the peices and have to look for them, its likely that lego just sees knee joints as too much of a hassle, and as too much of a gateway for complaints of the set falling over
As stated in the video, they've had ten years worth of complaints: plenty of time to devise a solution.
@@DrLockdown true but given how easily transformers can fall over (frankly trying to get some to stay in a pose is a pain) and given how big this set is I can see why they excluded knees in this instance, if it were smaller though like say deluxe size, well that would be a different story
Also what solution can there be? Ratchets wouldn't work as ones made by lego aren't very strong, hinges are just not an option given this is lego, and ball joints, do I even need to say it?
Multi hinge systems like Ninjago. Apparently the design team constantly tries to do stuff like that, but higher ups say no.
It's not a huge deal at the moment, but it is something they should fix going forward.
@@DrLockdown well if only I knew what those type of hinges were (I've been out of the loop with Ninjago since the ghost arc)
also can I just ask why they didn't use the Nexo Knights Axle mech Axe piece for this thing, sure its a different shade of orange but frankly it looks nicer and more like an axe
Beats me. Maybe was in use for another set
22:09 Just like Bionicle’s first 2 years. Difference being, they fixed it in its 3rd year (kind of).
If you mean the legs, year definitely. If you mean the breakages seen on grapple, lime joints say hi
@@DrLockdown Can you please pin that comment again, I misspelled something in it.
I didn't pin. Misclick
You actually don’t need to take the hand off fir the axe you can just flip it down like your transforming it

It didn't, but that's the exact gimbal I bought and it's too big for the lightbox

Lucky lol my dad doesn't really care about tf but he loved gaming he was there to play doom 1993 so yeah
ik I might get flak for this, but PotP Inferno.
No flak deserves. Childhood favourites are yours and yours alone
have you thought about getting a gimbal for smoother shots ?
Yep. Bought one. Doesn't fit in the light box
21:37 Yo whats the Jazz from this pic? Looks like an MP styled RTS Jazz or something
Generation toy. Uses magnets to keep the doors in place, meaning you don't need tab slots.
Hey doc, quick question. What is the music for the transformation?
Persona 5's 'phantom, AKA the menu music
There is a device called a Gimbal which gives you exactly the stable hand held shots you are looking for.
I own one. It's too big to fit in the light box. Works for outdoor shots though
(In all honesty, LEGO Star Wars is probably the best Star Wars merchandise ever, and I know this as speaker from experience with them. Yes, eventually I managed to tackle other LEGO things, like DC.)
Not likely for me to get this LEGO Optimus Prime, despite it being the combination of two of my favourite things.
Yeah to be fair, star wars doesn't exactly have a good track record with toys. Black series is all over the place.
Just an idea to help with the shaky camera footage. Maybe you can try jerry rigging a camera mount to a posable microphone stand that clamps to the table like what many streamers use. Might not work but I’m no expert.
I also tried that, but it removes the natural movement. I don't want to get rid of all of it: just the shakes
On the axe- i’ve seen lego fans genuinely confused as to what it is and just assumed it was something else with full confidence
That does sound like a failure of design
@@DrLockdown definitely
The ones that I personally would want are:

But you’ve given me a new insight on how much fulfillment this has given people. I’m still not convinced that it’s worth the full price but I do have a new appreciation for what it’s trying to do for people now.
Oh I very much think the price is justified, especially compared to nonsense in the masterpiece line like MP44 and 52
The tugs callout threw me into a loop.
Do you think that this qualifies as one of the top 22 figures of 2022?
Edit: Whup, missed that section. Thanks!
Watch the end
@@DrLockdown ah, missed that section. Thanks. By any chance, do you think a Bumblebee or Soundwave is more likely to happen, since Lego can’t do tanks or guns?
Probably bumblebee, because of marketability. I think the proportions are going to suffer due to the limitations of building in bricks, but he's the most popular by far
for your videos do you use a gimbal? that might help with handshake
Tried that. Too bit for the lightbox, and can't get close enough to the ground for legends figures
@@DrLockdown aw damn sorry loved the video btw, feeling really tempted to buy this one. Love it when your videos do that. Literally went out and got an air-razor the day after watching that video.
Oh damn. Glad I could help with my silly little nonsense.
I do not currently have the money for this, and I'm wondering how this would look with titan scale figures
It's just a bit below titan size
Cool! Can't wait to display it with my other titans
I’m curious though have you bought any exo force back the. ?
Ages ago I had two of them, but they've long been disassembled and turned into MOCs fifteen times over
0:49 OH MY GOD TUGS
everyone here go watch this fucking show right now
Definitely on my list to buy sometime this year.
I cant not notice that you use the stabilize feature in scenes… it’s seriously gonna bug me now :/
Imagine how I feel, knowing there has to be a way out there to fix it but having no clue!
CURSE YOU SHAKY HANDS!
I've seen some mods for this set on TFW2005 fir the axe the hands & a complete rebuild into the IDW comic prime as well
Lego works really well with mods
@@DrLockdown just be warned that the dark blue/earth blue for his legs might break over time but I think lego fixed that issue tho
Oh dear. That sounds bad. Lime green bonkle joints much?
@@DrLockdown unfortunately and my sincere apologies to be the bearer of this bad news to you
What is that Lego animated Optimus called?
I forget the name, but trdq had a review on it at some point
cool you got Shouki how is he
Fantastic
@@DrLockdown really?
Yes. Imagine Mipad soundwave's engineering crammed into the coolest train mode ever, along with a robot mode that looks far more mechanical
@@DrLockdown just ordered mine
Keep up the good work mate
Cheers
Thanks mate, and keep up the love for the hobby. Even if you have to take a few years off until you're an adult with a disposable income, you can always come back to it like I did.
Also yeah, MK is a friene from an old uni. Never knew about Tugs until I met him. He showed me some tricks with extracting audio, such as the tools he uses
4:30 Assic Park lmao
You don't actually have to remove the hand, you can fold it and it'll be fine, btw am I the only person with a stable axe?
Hey what's your outro music called
Sonic mania, press gardens act 2
Great review Dr L. Came for a silly review, not a feels trip 😅
As a collector of both Lego and Transformers, this is right up my alley but...im not a big G1 fan and this doesn't do it for me sadly. Does look great, but maybe on a sale I'll pick it up
Also, you mentioned no official transformers have weapons that peg into the arms, though I'm almost certain that SS Blitzwing has his weapon peg into his arm
Yeah actually forgot about that. Whoops
When are you going to review Legacy drag strip
I'm not. I love the toy, but don't have any specific unique angle to review him from. It wouldn't make a particularly interesting video.
Do keep an eye on this channel though...I may have something in the works that's close to that...
Nice
hope you get better man.
I really want a MP Shouki so much
Recommend importing from Asia. Usually cheaper than buying locally, at least for us Aussies
Love the video. Great work once again. Now that you've covered this, would you do videos on the KREO Transformers?
Ps. Opinions on Legacy Dragstrip and Motormaster?
Nah those were bad then and I have no incentive to go back and purchase them.
Also dragstrip is amazing and motormaster is decent.
Cybertron thunderblast has her gun on her sleeves
Huh. Never tried that with mine
I know this is not related to the video but there are legends figures you dont have, the 1989 legends star scream grimlock bumblebee and jazz.
Yes, although those are pretender inserts without the shells so I'm not counting those.
@@DrLockdown ah, gotcha. Makes sense.
Do you think they will make soundwave next?
Possibly. They could really do any of the popular g1 characters next. Marketing reasons will likely be what the decisions are based on, not 'what works'
