  • Technically a convent, this 1936 building used to house 90 nuns before closing its doors. It sits on a bluff overlooking the water not far from where I grew up and was the center of many local myths and legends. I first visited the building four or five years ago and loyal viewers may remember I posted a video of myself spending the night in this abandoned convent exactly one year ago. The caretaker lives right next to the building and makes frequent rounds throughout the day. He has also contracted the service of multiple guard dogs who will viciously greet you upon entering the property.

Beautiful video. I'm so glad they are going to preserve this incredible building.

Beautiful vid and a splendid place. Reminds me of an old monastery in Rome that now is a hotel, where we spent a long week-end, two years ago.
It will probably end up as a peculair hotel, too.

Such a well thought-out floor plan: the way the cross is visible along the axis of the building on two levels. I wonder what it's like there in person, what kind of atmosphere or energy one might experience or encounter. I like the simple, dignified interior and how it's so clean and unspoiled. I appreciate the respectful way you explore and show the building.

An absolutely beautiful structure! I've read American Nuns are making a comeback. Perhaps this place will one day reopen. Thank you for posting.

LOL every time you or your friend make a loud noise, I expected the spirit of Sister Mary Ignatius to appear dressed in her habit, with a stern look on her face going "SHHHHH!"
with a very large wooden ruler in her hand.

Great video... I wonder what happen to the vocations of this monastery, I am a former benedictine monk ..

what I love about your vids is that you pan slowly so the viewer isn't "jerked" into the next frame -- also you don't use annoying music in the background....as a viewer I am able to just sit back and let my thoughts roam as freely as you do while filming.....Cheers to a job well done! I am now a subscriber!

This building is sufficiently insecure that you are able to get into it to make videos. At the same time, it is sufficiently secure to be free of vandalism. Who hires the caretaker? Why doesn't the Church sell the land and thank the caretaker?
The Church had enough money in 1936 to build a fairly fancy building like this. By 1950, architectural fashion had changed to the spartan brick and steel frame windows style of the postwar era.
Urban exploration generally reveals buildings that have been abandoned in a hurry by people who didn't care about them any more. This is the neatest and cleanest abandoned interior I have ever seen on RUclips. The nuns tidied the place before leaving it, and it hasn't been empty for more than 5-10 years.

Diese Räume sind ungenutzt aber nicht verlassen. Viele wunderbare soziale Dinge könnten hier entstehen. Ein Café, eine Sozialstation, ein Auffangbecken für die gestrandeten dieser Welt.

They will look after it well... though it is closed for now, it's possible that sisters may return to the convent at some stage in the future.

Any idea why this monastery was abandoned?

    • @lylecosmopolite
      @lylecosmopolite 8 лет назад +1

How many women of your generation wish to become nuns?
My brother is a monk. His monastery has no trouble recruiting new members. But convents are closing all around the world. Women who become nuns nowadays live and work in the world, as teachers, nurses and social workers.

I'm just asking because this abandoned monastery is way well clean and in good shape to be abandoned.

I would agree. Abandoned means to give up on completely. Disused would be more appropriate.

In my opinion it is sad that the DIOCESE did not take this building and do,something with it.
It would be great for unwed mothers perhaps a community of nuns would of been happy to,operate o\
It no need to close which a beautiful bui, ding
The DIOCESE IS AT FAULT,FOR,NOT,DOING SOMETHING
BISHOPS. HAVE AN ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEM. SORRY
