These accounts are so interesting to me. Just watched a film about St. Charbel - a Lebanese hermit in the late 19th century that even other monks found hard core. 🤗 He's associated with over 25K miracles, too. Muslims even revered him because he prayed for everyone. Peace to all
Monastic life is a quest for a deeper and closer relationship to God through a life of personal holiness not otherwise possible. I will admit, I would go crazy in a week and probably drive the whole community crazy with me, but there are people who God calls this way.
I don't understand why people watch films like this and then criticise it! If you don't watch with an open mind don't watch it! I wouldn't watch a film about women's beach volley ball and then criticise it! I can only say if you have never experienced monastic life you really can't comment on it. Peace to you all.
I have to start over again. I wish to build a relationship with God. I will see if Jesus is calling me, or not, to this way of life. I have a lot to learn and appreciate. The Bible and the church, are elementary ways into the Heart of Jesus.
trust me, he is not calling you by mystery babylon (roman catholicism). none of this appears to us in the new testament, and what things do appear (like a temple, incense, perpetual sacrifice etc) is old testament practice, not for this dispensation. among other major, damnable issues with this church (Satan's greatest counterfeit of the true church, which is teh body of Christ, the BELIEVERS, not a pagan structure)
What most people do not understand, is that this vocation is for the segment of society that is introverted and reclusive naturally. It has always been an outlet for that type of human being Although personally, I am an atheist, this vocation has a great attraction for me as I am more interested in matters of the mind that engaging other people.
Antonio Serrano I was in religious life for 5 years. I know many religious who have such a low Christology that they are 'anonymous' athiests. Most of them are still in their orders.
that's an extraordinary generalization, William Nist. It also demeans the vocation of so many to simply categorize them as introverts and not wanting to engage with people. You rob these men of their being called, and of their loving response. Anecdotally, I have met monks who are not introverted, just as I have met introverts in more active ministries.
@William Nist, in another post you dismiss other religious as having a low christology, as atheists, but yet you have already dismissed monastics as all introverts. You dismiss vocations everywhere based upon your own narrow perspective. I think the problems lie deep in you.
No. this doesn't fit as I know plenty of monks who do not fit into the category of introverted. Most monks I know are monks because of their profound love of God. It's that love that brings men to a monastery, not introversion.
They are not in seclusion, they are with like minded people. A hermit is in seclusion. They chose that music as apposed to, say classical or even rap. Whatever brings meaning to your life it's not for everyone but they are on their path.
DIOS YAVHE les bendiga, muy solemne y muy devoto, inspirador y hasta contagioso estilo de vida, no cualquiera, pues quiere mucha templanza y caracter. YAVHE GOD bless you, very solemn and very devout, inspirational and even contagious lifestyle, not just anyone, he wants a lot of temperance and character.
@1958boomergirl It was my own equipment and I didn't charge the monks - They're good friends. It was an honour to make it for them :) Thanks very much!
At the time of making there were 8 including Novices. There is not a fixed number and size varies from community to community. This is quite a small group
They have group prayer, usually in the form of vespers and private prayer, that is the highest form of prayer. Saints usually get to a point were almost all their thoughts are prayers, and that is the aim of living a monastic life.
@alanhussey I don't really think they do - I just think that the older you are the more discipline you have. I'm early 20's and I know that I couldn't do it
i wish protestants had monastaries.. Unfortunately we just get labeled as the wierd guy w the cat that goes into town twice a year for supplies oh well back to bevis and butthead
It is better if these monks can share their knowledge and wisdom to others instead of being in secluded places. In my view, a true great person is the one who makes an effort to change the lives of others, instead of just living alone. Anyway, I respect these monks but I don't agree with the seclusion part.
I'm sure there are plenty of people to share their knowledge and wisdom. After all, they are sharing with the outside by prayer at least 7 times a day and many of them write a lot. We all have different gifts and lots of friars, monks, brothers, nuns, sisters complement each other. We are rather introverted and find it difficult to speak with 1 or 100 people.
it seems like this path isnt giving many people attainment. Seems rather depressing and unfruitful to me. I see a monastary as a place where an individual should go to get away from the world to regain their inner health if they have been living unskillfully, kind of like a hospital for the soul, but definitely not a place one should confine oneself to indefinitely. No Christ has come out of a monastary yet, maybe some desert fathers but that should tell the monks something...

I love how this freaks out Protestants!
This is protestant. It's Anglican.
It is a Church of England Abbey.
@splinterbyrd they are benedictine, so they should be Catholic.

God bless your discernment. Jesus will let you know, remember it usually comes into one's soul bit by bit, softly. Not like a bolt of lightening. 💒⚡📖🐯

If you don't believe in God, in a monestry you will be as much as two or three days.

Reallt interesting. I know that in some monasteries the Benedictines offer accommodation to visitors as part of their ministry.
monks are not necessarily ordained, some remain lay brothers. All monks take vows, but only some become priests.
Has anyone attained to the Divine Kingdom by following this daily program?

I think they live alone in order to not be worldly
indurnuguri1 many monks teach via publishing books on spiritual subjects.
indurnuguri1 that’s why they pray.
