      At one time the Archdiocese of Chicago was the second largest in the USA ( after New York ) , but there has been a demographic change in the Catholic population in terms of older people of Italian and Irish descent in the East and North of the USA dying out or their descendants no longer practicing and instead the church in the South and West in Texas and California has expanded with immigrants from Mexico and Latin America in general . The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has replaced Chicago as the second largest in the USA .

      The Archdiocese of Chicago is an especially dismissive and unsupportive diocese. The bishop doesn’t care too much about preserving the beauty of churches like these so he doesn’t provide funds for renovation… that’s usually the case for neglected Catholic churches.

      I was asked to be civil before I commented. So I will. These incredible architectural masterpieces are absolutely worth saving and keeping. However, the church is in rapid decline, not only here in America but everywhere in the world where it has been a massive power for many many centuries. Not only are people in general losing their religious beliefs, causing congregations to shrink. Fewer and fewer men are taking up the path to priesthood, fewer and fewer women are becoming nuns, and more and more people are seeing the evil within their system regarding child abuses. Many catholic schools and churches are being abandoned because there aren't enough believers to help pay for the costs of maintenance, and their reuse is difficult at best for potential buyers. So many have been taken by much smaller groups of different faiths, only to continue to deteriorate from lack funding, and then they end up like this. It is very sad to see the buildings decay as they are, but the reasons are pretty obvious.

    • @bobwaters7387
      @bobwaters7387 Год назад +7

      Church attendance has gone down. Many parishes cannot be self controlling. Sometimes the diocese will close on parishes and have those parishioners go to a nearby church. These churches are like "family" to its people. Sometimes they get even violent protecting it from being closed.

      Yes, in the early 1900's the church was new and was thriving with Polish immigrants and their families who worked in the meat packing companies on the South Side of Chicago. Through the middle and late 1900s many Polish families remained in the neighborhood and attended the church weekly (myself included). Eventually, many people of Latino heritage also started attending the church in the 2000s until many of the Polish community left the neighborhood. Their was a convent, church and school which was used by thousands of families for over 100 years. It is one of the oldest churches in Chicago that served the Polish community for so long. We still fight to maintain it and keep it open.

      If another group will use it such as the fraternity of st Peter (fssp) then the building could be re-designated as a "chapel" or "oratory" instead of a parish. No matter what there's always a solution but my ❓ is what is the Cardinal waiting for??

    The inscription on the main altar looks to possibly be in Polish. I have known many Polish Catholics from Chicago. The locked “boxes” along some of the walls are depositories for consecrated Communion hosts. The fancy sink with a cherub is a special sink for disposing of left over consecrated Communion wine. The large tub with a locked lid is the baptismal font. The bird on top is a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. The globe with a swing open perforated top and chain is for burning incense to bless the people with during solemn services.; the little bell shaped item next to it is used to extinguish the incense after use. So much rich symbolism throughout this church!

    Thank God vandals have not entered this magnificent house of worship. The damaged wall must be near an exterior downspout with lots of water infiltration from melting and re-freezing causing the moisture to penetrate to the interior. To see any form of decay in a place like this is heartbreaking.

    A bunch of misinformation here. The fact is, the city of Chicago wants to save St. Adalbert's church, they declared it an architectural landmark. It is the Catholic Archdiocese that refuses to cooperate with the preservationists. The Cardinal ordered the removal of the stained glass windows, which can be seen in this video. The windows are now gone.

In my diocese in the UK we have quite a few priests from India and Nigeria helping us and evangelising us as we did to them in years gone by .

    11:05 IHS are the first three letters of the name "Jesus" in Greek. This is Iota (I), Eta (H in capitalized form in Greek), Sigma (S). It is sometimes written IHC (the version of the capital letter sigma at the end of a word is C) and may include a bar over the H to indicate an abbreviation.
    In Latin, the inscription came to stand for Jesus Savior of Humankind. This is Iesus (Jesus) Hominum (of humankind) Salvator (Savior).
