The newest trend on TikTok is tweens being obsessed with the makeup store Sephora and expensive skincare. Kids are starting anti-aging routines while being wrinkleless, and using products not meant for their skin barrier. It’s a combination of seeing influencers all the time, new beauty standard expectations, and the iPad generation growing up too fast. Teachers are also noticing developmental delays in their classrooms and reading books will be a thing of the past. The Chronically Online 10 Year Olds of Sephora #edvasian

@@greyfox4838 I constantly cast youtube videos to the tv when I am at home, I even did it with this video. Basically I just use it as a larger screen for videos from my computer and smartphone. I don't use the TV to watch any tv channels, only for casting video from any streaming services at best.

My oldest sister is a millennial with a Gen alpha 2 year old. My sister already gave her a tablet and she knows how to use it extremely well. Whenever I babysit her, I never let her use it. Thankfully, she still likes to play with blocks, shapes and do dances. I think she knows that when she’s with me (a zillennial) she can’t get the tablet. But the second my sister comes to pick her up, she begins to ask for the tablet and my sister would get upset at me for not giving it to her. I just hope that my sister cracks down on what kind of apps and websites she has access to when she’s older

*Holy shit, in retrospect reading fanfictions really DID put me on a higher reading level than other kids... Why am I NOW REALIZING THIS?*
I literally significantly upgraded my english skills and vocabulary reading fansiction in english (it's not my first language). This helped me with work in several places when I moved in another non-english speaking country (I knew their language too, but people who know english is still rare there). Of course a lot of fanfics' vocabulary are not usable in everyday life and at work (lol), but I am very grateful for ao3.😅 At the beginning I literally had to translate every other word during reading.
@volhan.p.9722 Oh no, I forgot all about AO3.😂 Believe it or not, I actually found a few genuinely incredible fanfics there -- well-written, descriptive but not excessively so, well-fleshed out characters and scenarios, no typos. Those 20+ chapter stories could have honestly been made into books. This makes me want to go back and try to find them.

I'm only 17 and I've been BAFFLED ab little 12 year olds in my area looking like they would be in my grade. I'm not that old and nearly escaped gen alpha but I'm so very grateful for having my awkward claires and justice phases and the obsessions over mlp and weird crushes on twilight characters, gen alpha is very saddening. my little 6 year old cousin started reciting gross tiktok audios where moaning was involved and the words gyat .. sephora should have an age restriction

Same, I even once walked into a store and go adressed as a lady and then less then 30 minutes later as a girl which it's funny but hella confusing to me, so my theory is that all these 12 year olds made every confused to the point wher no one looks like they age normally, plus teens and even preteens "have to" look mature while every adult (after about 17) has to look like 16 years old, even tho it should be no ones business to have a say in how sb feels their age or wants to feel. One day when i was in the elementary school i asked my mom to buy me a cream. I wanted so badly to be like adults. My mom told me "i still have to remind you to brush your teeth after sweets. Figure out that one at first, no cream for you". Case closed.

You're allowed to be upset with me now, all I am asking from you is to trust me I'm doing this out of love and you will understand it later." And she's absolutely right. She even allowed me to feel the feelings when I was frustrated or upset when she told me no, which is such a great thing to do. She did really well.

I saw on the news just yesterday a warning issued to the parents of these kids because yeah using stuff like retinol at 12 will screw up your skin big time unless you actually need it for an acne condition in which case you would be prescribed pure retinol from a dermatologist.. retinol forces your skin to shed faster than normal. It can burn you like any chemical...

yes true, i'm 16 and had kind of a problem being on the pc so much ever since i was small, but i spent my time playing online games (like animal jam) and watching mlp videos, and i was always a normal kid with decent grades and all. hell, i even learned english at 9 from being online so much. i think the problem is the short-form brainrot content nowadays.
Thank you for your comment at the end about how people love to pick on whatever young women are doing and make fun of it even though it's not that important. Like yes, this trend is ridiculous, but I'm far more concerned about the clip of elementary school boys disrespecting their teacher because of the misogyny they heard on twitch. We should certainly gate keep skincare when it comes to kids who are going to be doing more damage than good to their skin at such a young age. They haven’t even experienced their first zit and they’re already working on wrinkles? Their skin is going to be so messed up by the time they reach an age where they actually need said skincare.

Kids don’t need any skincare like this and it’s dystopian how much these brands are profiting from it. If any kids wanted genuine advice about skincare, it would be to wear sunscreen daily to protect their skin. Does not need to be fancy sunscreen just something 50 SPF+. Maybe a lip balm if they want. That’s all they need. These Sephora products etc are not necessary, or designed for young skin.

I'm a teacher in a title 1 elementary school, and it's not THAT bad. Are there kids who are below grade level? Absolutely. Do they leave the school not knowing their alphabet? No, no one who has been in our school for more than 2 years lacks alphabetic knowledge. Reading is a bigger issue - just because you know your ABCs doesn't mean you know how to use them, and there definitely ARE 5th graders who read at a 1st or 2nd grade level.

to be fair i've had horrible acne for 10 years, it started when I was 8 so I contest that point, but looking at these children using these products its clear they have no need for it. I had a routine for this whole time but that doesn't mean I was mixing a random list of products I saw from influencers, I was being guided by professionals because the point was to improve my skin not seem mature and cool to people online.

@@serahnefrom my personal experience, you would have to change your diet and start medications. Skin care wouldn’t help and if it did, it wouldn’t help too much
Keep your skin clean with water and ph neutral soap. Don't rub too much make up on it. Don't stress too much (hahaha..hahahaHAHAHaaAaha Hahaha ahh ah ah AaarRGgHhHHHH!!!) and eat a proper lunch and breakfast and dinner with fruit and vegetables and drink a lot.

I think Sephora is gladly benefiting of these craziness, they're buying more than regular adults that know what they want and what their skin needs, these kids are getting everything they can get their hands on and everything TikTok tells them they need! So I think Sephora is secretly happy about this because it's business after all, and if these kids' parents don't care about their kids ruining their skin so early, ruining their childhood and becoming unbearable frivolous brats than why Sephora would, right? I'm starting to think they're strategically placing the stores near children because they're potential customers.

As an older gen z (24), it's kind of fascinating to me to see people my age and younger obsessing over their appearances and having this phobia of aging then doing things that will absolutely exacerbate aging and skin issues as they get older. Like children damaging their skin with retinol and young girls getting all these procedures and fillers at a concerningly young age. Like.....fillers stretch out your skin. You can get them dissolved but your skin will still be less tight.
Seeing how all these celebs who had insane levels of work done before they even turned 20 (Kylie Jenner, Bella Hadid etc.) are looking 30 in their 20's and imo aging much worse than they would have naturally makes me think that all the people getting this 'preventative aging' work done are going to be absolutely STRUGGLING in 5-10 years. Like these celebs have infinite money for more work and revisions and they're still struggling to hide how off-putting and uncanny valley-esque they look now. It's so ironic to me that people who are obsessing over their appearances the most may look awful in a decade because their work ages poorly. I don't wanna get old and wrinkly but I'd rather do that then look like some of these celebs, it's unnerving.
I have never used a proper skincare routine and I look the same as I did 10 years ago (minus the grey hair). I'm starting to think that my skin is less unique than I thought.

I’m 24 as well. My skin routine consists of me washing my face before I go to bed, and dabbing body wash on my face when I shower. That’s it. I’ve been doing this since I was 13 and my skin has been normal all these years. I’m glad I listened to myself rather than my sisters growing up. They told me that I should wash my face 3 times a day, use a face mask 3 times a week, and wear a ton of makeup whenever I go out. They told me that I would become the ugly friend and that my friends would only keep me around to make themselves look better. Fast forward to now, my friends at 13 are still my closest friends now. I’ve gotten to the point of my life where I’m very happy with how I look. Anytime I see myself with a filter on (the ones that change skin tone or facial features) it feels wrong. I used to be super insecure about the dark circles under my eyes, but every time they get covered with makeup, I feel as though I can’t walk outside. I’m glad that I never downloaded TikTok or watched beauty channels in general. I feel as though I’d still be stuck in that mindset if I had

my thing with the alphabet stuff... like in kindergarten and first grade there were months dedicated to being taught this. workbooks just filling pages in copying undercase/uppercase letters within the lines until we can. how that's not working (happening??) somehow is beyond me.
Yeah school expects alot of this to be already known now by the kids and call them behind because they don't
as a former school employee; a lot of schools got rid of holding kids back, and theres no consequences for disrespectful or abusive behavior. these kids dont WANT to learn, and the school is too afraid of the parents to do anything to help them.
My kindergartner is expected to know her alphabet, in order, write every letter upper and lowercase letter, know numbers through 20 and add and subtract those numbers, and also has a laundry list of fine motor activities she's supposed to be capable of. Her best friend who's in first grade has several pages of homework every single day, and the second he's done all he wants is his tablet to decompress from the stress of acting "right" all day in a way his lil 7 year old body can't handle.
We're trying to shove all this stuff in these kids as fast as possible so yeah of course none of it sticks and their brain only retains the skills they use daily- enough reading and fine motor control to use a touchscreen.

@@qryptidI think instead of an IPad an actual computer would be better. Using keys help kids learn letters andthe ability to use keys is a motor skill. So if a kid wants to play after doing homework it should be on a computer as they would be engaging the skills that they just learned in homework and school.
I’m genuinely really worried for the safety of these kids when they get older- they have criminally low attention spans, dopamine addictions, and at the ripe age of eight or so they’re already worried about wrinkles. with short-form social media being as common and accessible as it is to young children I’m actually not surprised this happened. I’m more worried about the kind of things they’ll do when they become adults. I’m so glad I was raised in a low-technology household where this didn’t happen to me
Ironically from his mention of the Hunger Games books, these kids are becoming just like the freakish Capitol citizens. As adults they'll be spoiled, obsessed with entertainment, extravagant, and altered to the point of creepiness by plastic surgery. They'll basically be the equivalent of a ragdoll cat in terms of their ability to survive if their pampered world is taken away.

Yes, Google won't be impartial all the time when you ask more complex stuff, but I'm just so tired of like, looking at kids ask on social media the meaning of simple vocabulary words that they can totally search by themselves and run with whatever they're told without even questioning, now every browser has a built in search bar, it takes seconds to tap away in your phone and make a single question, why are people depending of social media to answer such basic questions??

@syedarizvi7290 While we say that parents who can't teach their kids properly shouldn't have kids. But by society's standards we need to have kids regardless as that's how we have the next generation of humans. It's an expectation in that sense. So a parent who is not mentally ready to have a child may still have one and then not raise them properly by instilling good manners and behaviour. It becomes the rest of our problem as everyone who comes into contact with the child will then need to deal with their behaviour and correct it too. I'm gen z teacher of 3 years now. Gen alpha is terrified of confrontation because no one EVER resisted their behaviour. I had some of the twitch geniuses who claimed that woman teacher is worthless (I am a woman) so I told them they need to realise this woman teacher has in her hand the ability to prevent him from finishing his education and the possibility of him attending school trips and such. I don’t really understand how kids are ending up like this. My son is in 1st grade and he says a few of his classmates habitually just don’t do their work and just eff around all day…how as a parent could you be ok with that?? My kid would be losing all screen privileges so fast if I found out they weren’t listening to their teachers at school. Parents are just pathetic. Not just “these days”, though, I’m sure people have always been this way.
It's worse now, they just shove iPads in their face because it's the easiest way to shut them up. On top of that you have "gentle parenting" which most people confuse for permissive parenting, where saying "no" or even slightly raising your voice is forbidden. Which is gonna be a wild ride for these kids when they hit the real world, get told "no" regularly, and get BTFO in public for being rude/aggressive and pissing someone off.
From what I observed, is because parents be having kids for the wrong reasons (ie: keep a man, impulsiveness) or they're a child themselves (teenage parents). They're usually so caught up with their own lives to focus on their children, or they wanna give them the lives they never had. So they rather distract their children or cater to them emotionally no matter the consequences of no discipline. I guess they're trying their best, but imo it's entirely pathetic.

If the kids have more money than you, then they will spend it how they want. This isn't about them looking young, they are just emulating skincare people on the internet. The only problem we should have about this is for the workers who have to clean up their mess. And it's also not our problem if they age their skin, that's between the kids and their parents.
I’ve had severe acne and pcos ever since I was a teenager so my skin is always crappy. However, now that I’m 21 my skin is smooth and I barely use any expensive products. I just buy something that reacts well with my skin and it’s a lot less expensive that any of those products and it does the same, if not any better. And I just use a cleanser, micellar water, anti acne cream and a moisturizer. I only have a bit of hyperpigmentation but it’s much better.
its important that, in discussions like these, to NOT put the blame on the child. we have to acknowledge that this is heavily influenced by their parents and the algorithm thats being pushed down their throats. we should NOT recycle the same boomer logic we tried so hard reject. I am 13, and I have a prescribed skincare routine. It’s literally all acne stuff. Not to sound like a big ol’ bully, but so many girls at my school do their skincare routines while in school. It’s drunk elephant and glow recipe a lot, and so much of it it’s anti-aging and tightening. Now that we have so much social media, it exposes us to adults skin and fashion and hair. Videos of adults doing their TikTok skincare routine makes little girls want to look like them.
I think it's a concerning development and I really hope that someday, there will be a better balance between the on and offline somehow. Whatever they prescribed you, if it's hormone based I beg you to try mare milk soap instead. It's soap made from horse milk, no chemicals.It's the only thing you need to combat acne if you ask me. And a looooot cheaper than most skin products.

I remember I was considered young starting prescription retinoids at 17 but it was for a diagnosed skin condition and I had to use spf and follow directions carefully. I had to be careful outside and slowly up the dose over the years.

Good point on the lack of delayed gratification for the younger generations. I know people around 20 who literally can't handle being in silence, they always need something playing. This never let's them explore their thoughts without stimuli, which imo really helps with knowing oneself and feeling comfortable with who you are, since you regularly just take time to think really deep on concepts without being handheld by some sort media.

i would be lying if i said i wasn't interested in makeup as a pre-teen but it's certainly not the case for skin care and i'm greatful for it. i didn't do skincare until i turned 15 and ONLY due pimples/achnes, honestly "aging" never even came up as a thought, and at the age of 21 it still doesn't. it's really devastating to see parents & tiktok spread these awful agendas that kids need to worry about aging & wrinkles, like do better! yes we will get wrinkly eventually but it's nothing scary, don't understand tiktok's collective fear of aging in general but i won't get into that right now. we live in such a dystopian society currently and we can only hope that it'll get better somehow...
I think a big problem is that the blame is misplaced. the parents shouldn't support this, but every single parent knows kids aren't the easiest to discourage. kids don't realize they don't need it. the companies making these products encourage this behavior, with their marketing being very centered around influencer hauls and brand deals. i've seen skincare fan accounts, definitely from 8-12 year old girls. "preteen" is dead, is the phrase i've heard around this. they don't have anywhere else to go but the mall, and they don't get enough internet restriction, even LESS than I had in 2013, and I still saw shit. the internet is too big, and monetized, it's a scary thing and we shouldn't "bully" these kids, we should try to protect them and explain in an understandable and kind way why this is a bad decision.

Hi guys. So I would just like to say that this is not all of us 10-12 year olds. I am almost a teen and I have never been to a Sephora or any makeup store. I am sure that there are more tweens other than me who are like this. However, to the people who are doing this, please leave the sephoras and head to a library. Books are so amazing and interesting. Personally here are some recommendations for kids around my age: Legend (By: Marie Lu), Hunger Games, The Inheritance Games (by: Jennifer Lynn Barnes), and Harry Potter.
Personally these are some of my favorites and I am urging kids my age to read instead of ruining makeup stores.
There are plenty of young teens who don’t wreck makeup and skincare, but the book kids it they don’t make it into the media 😂

I’m going to give you some advice from an old head according to the internet. Don’t worry about what the internet thinks.
Every generation thinks poorly of the next generation, so don’t feel like you need to defend them, or compare yourself to them. Also, you nice you get older and want to complain about the next generation, remember how these people view your generation.
Also you should read the book *the outsiders* by S.E Hinton if you haven’t. It might be a little older than you’re used to, but a very fun read if you didn’t need to in school.
I am a teacher, so I'd like to give you the perspective of someone who has been where you are and who sees school from the other side. When you are a bright young person, you tend to self-select friends who are other bright, well behaved young people. Teachers do not get to select which children we spend time with, nor do many other adult workers. Because of this, you tend to underestimate how much of your generation is like this (as I did when young) while adults who are only exposed to kids online tend to overestimate the situation. The truth is generally somewhere in the middle. There are many intelligent and well behaved members of gen alpha. But there are enough unusually behaved and destructive members of this generation to be concerning as well.

There is definitely a line between no "tech time", which can genuinely hinder them as in this day and age a baseline knowledge of how all this stuff works is essential, and - "here kid let this device consume all your time, attention, and existence bc I don't actually wanna parent you so eh whatever." My friend went to Sephora the other day and she was happy to see that a woman was teaching a young girl about skincare products. Like she was walking with her, showing her products and explaining what each product did, and which products are for adults and which one are for kids. I feel like this is a good way to teach kids about skincare, people just need to take some time and have patience to educate their kids.

The sad thing is, using age inappropriate skin care is actually AGING them. That’s right, all this stuff they’re doing to their developing skin does damage so by the time they’re in their 20’s, there’s a huge chance they’ll look like they’re pushing 30’s.
I’m 32, but regularly told I look like I’m in my early to mid twenties. I didn’t use any products when I was young and now I only use very minimal products. I regularly go into college campuses and see kids that are 18-21 but look like they are pushing 35 because of all the work they’ve got done to their face (because they can never get the results they want from skin care alone so they move on to procedures which is becoming a huge problem for this crowd).
These kids also don’t understand that the skin care they’re relying on is only a small part of the beauty equation. If they don’t eat healthy or work out, they will age pretty quickly. Look at older influencers who look young; you’re going to see a lot of emphasis on health routines and minimal products….that’s who they should be learning from and not other young people who could literally wreck themselves and still look young because they ARE still young.

My skincare routine literally only includes sunscreen and removing my makeup at the end of the day with an alcohol based astringent. No retinols or anything for anti-aging and I always get compliments on how clear and healthy my skin looks. Everyone new that I meet always assumes that I am in my mid 20s when I am actually in my 30s. It's kind of wild seeing teenagers who look oddly older than I am spending easily 10x the amount on cosmetics as I do.
I’m a young teen but I’m absolutely mortified by the behavior of the 10-6 year olds in my area. I went to Sephora just because I needed makeup for an event and there were about 5 of these young girls with retinol and chemical peeling solutions or whatnot in their bags. These children are going to ruin their skin waaayyyy to much before they even turn 18.

I can kinda relate to the childhood’s of these IPad kids. As a kid growing up during some hard times. My parents didn’t have the time to watch me while I did kid stuff like going outside. I would literally ask to go outside and bike. But since we live in a largely populated city and they didn’t have the time or TRUST when I was older. I was never able to be a kid and then a teen. And even books were limited. So I grew up on TV and technology. And I KNOW those communities I was in influenced me. In my case I found myself in art communities and fandom as a young kid. And I know that when I saw art supplies videos I wanted everything shown. Thankfully I had other relationships like genuine friendships and reality to ground me.

Another problem is that all of these products are so out of reach for most people. Im 17 and when i was 10/11, slime, fidget spinners, and squishies were trendy, but they were all relatively cheap products that my parents were willing to buy me. A lot of 10 year olds now wont be able to partake in these trends because their families cant afford it, or because their families just wont be willing to spend that much on what they think might be a phase. Now parents have to choose between emptying their wallets or risking their children being alienated from their peers 😭

I don’t even know what half those products do. All I do is wash my face with micellar water and use a Nivea moisturiser that someone gifted me for Christmas or something and I get so many compliments on my skin. (I also just don’t wear foundation, i find it uncomfortable)

I don't think using many skin products is necessarily the biggest problem. If you are an adult, and buy your own skincare, in the end it's your educated choice. I am a member of that group of people and need a very specific set of cleansers and moisturisers that are on the expensive side because my skin has always been crazy because of some hormonal issues. The problem is that these are kids who haven't even had their first zit, their skin is smooth as a peach. They are ruining their faces for the future with overpriced mumbo jumbo, if this is what they are doing now, what will they be using when they actually get older?.....also why are their parents giving them money for all these things? When I was little I would get my allowance for a fun toy or a ticket to a cinema to go with friends...

I got into skincare a bit at around 10 but all I wanted were face masks and nose strips. Now nearing the age of 24 I use face wash, hyaluronic acid, and moisturizer. Children don’t need to go crazy especially since they’re gonna go through hormonal acne that’s almost impossible to get rid of.
