    Nowadays, we’re social media influencers pop up in places we’d never expect. Especially in healthcare where experts are sharing their knowledge while gaining large followings and fame. We’re talking about Dr. Kenny Smiles and Dr. Roxy. Both are famous on TikTok for creating content around their professions of Dentist and Plastic Surgeon. At first glance, it seems like people having fun on the internet while cultivating an audience interested in their line of work. Funny content like roasting a patient’s teeth and what cosmetic procedures to get so you can fit in with beauty standards - the basics! But once you dig a little deeper you realize the line between professional and content creator starts getting blurred. The parasocial relationship they built with their fans doesn’t seem the most ethical since they’re putting clout over the safety of their patients. Are doctors supposed to be our cool internet-famous friend who happens to know how to do surgery? The Supervillain Era of Healthcare Influencers #edvasian

    • @pancakelord83
      @pancakelord83 7 месяцев назад +9

      literally!! teeth are a huge insecurity for so many people (including myself) and depending on where you live you may not be able to afford the healthcare you need to get them fixed if something happens. which also plays into classism, as "ugly teeth" are often because people can't afford to do anything about cavities, chipped teeth or get braces etc.
      I've been to the dentist's once in the past 4 years and only got a checkup and had them fix a single cavity despite needing a lot more than that, but it was what i could afford and my insurance will only cover half if it's urgent.
      I've been told I may need braces if I want my teeth to stay healthy in the long run, and I was supposed to get a new checkup on my wisdom teeth months ago but it's SO expensive that I don't even want to think about it!
      I could literally get all of my books for the next semester for the cause of getting my wisdom teeth pulled, and the braces could most likely pay for books for the rest of my degree:/

    It is weird to think that veneers are absolutely necessary when people have crooked teeth. Veneers have their own complications that can increase the chances of needing dentures earlier on. There are also companies that make temporary veneers that are customized to fit over someone's teeth. If someone wants to get veneers it is their personal choice, but there should be more education around the risks and alternatives. Also this escalating narrative that they are necessary on social media is disturbing.

It was much more focused on the education and the account didn't post very often. Even though his clinic does both cosmetic and necessary procedures, it was still focused on the education. I'm comfortable with that level of social media presence especially when it helps to see before and afters of the procedure you're going to get (with patient consent! and also often only showing the area and not their face or if the procedure is on the face you can still zoom in)

My dad would tell me to not take it so personally and that it's just a "joke." I wish I had the courage to say something to her back then. Having bad teeth/smile isn't easy, and I'm sure the majority of people who went to that dentist have been faced with people making fun of them their whole lives. In the US there's a lil legal thing called HIPAA when it comes to any healthcare. Even if you've signed a HIPAA agreement with your healthcare provider, there are things outlined in there that they cannot do in regards to social media because there are separate forms you have to sign in regards to the release of any of your identifiers be it your initials, face, name etc. I hope that comes to bite him in the ass, though with most healthcare providers having insurance and lawyers probably covering their ass, it may be hard to sue them without legal rep.

    Reminds me of what would happen some 200+ years ago. When some men would just do a little course or just say they were doctors, and went around traveling and performing surgeries for people to see. There was this one guy who would try and beat records of lobotomy procedures. Like doing as many as possible under 20 minutes or lefthanded, or two at the same time etc. Insane, but it was also seen as entertainment.

    • @awolters5827
      @awolters5827 9 месяцев назад +6

      @@chelscara It wasn't two audience members, it was one audience member and then a medical professional (can't remember off the top of my head if it was a nurse or a doctor). They died because they had fingers cut off while the whacko was working on the patient. I think it was an amputation (the procedure that was being performed on the patient) and the guy (not calling him a doctor like honestly he does not deserve it) ended up rushing and killed the patient and a medical professional because they both went into septic shock. Then an audience member died.

    As a healthcare professional for the last 20 years, I do not like these “influencers”. Some patients already have unrealistic expectations and look to us to help, educate them. It’s already difficult to get patients the care they need…fighting ridiculous insurance requirements, constantly being short staffed, finding new specialist because many retired. Patient confidentiality is serious and not to be shared with the public. This behavior is not acceptable. We are here to help people in need that come to us because they trust us and our knowledge/experience.

    They never know what to do with themselves or will say “I was just asking (why I’m wearing a mask)”

BUT if they do their social media content in their workplace that's an instant red flag in my opinion. There are medical professionals I've seen that have made all their content from their office or from their home, and I think that's the way it should be done.

    I worked as a pharmacy technician for the largest hospital in my area. They implemented a ZERO tolerance policy for social media at work. From the time you entered the parking lot, until the time you left, no pictures or videos were allowed. I heard a nurse on the 9th floor was fired after a tik tok of her at work was found. All it showed was her and a generic wall, but she was immediately let go.
    At first I didn't get it, but after some of the stuff I've seen, I understand now. Filming or photos at work is a HIPAA violation just waiting to happen, even by accident.

Unfortunately they probably sign a lot of fine print before the procedures in order to get the services comped. They may be signing away their rights, or at least the doctors and dentists hope so. Some of these medical "professionals" apparently get away with this by hanging the offer of free services over their heads so they do anything, maybe including what they are not allowed to do Because these are probably private practices and do not work with insurance companies at all, they have less bureaucracy, but they still have a lot of standards and regulations they are bound by. As more of these incidents will be taken to court and we will find out if that arrangement holds up..
