"Gotta give the effects team props"
Pun intended?
A version of the big demon at the end was portrayed in an episode of the Extreme Ghostbusters animated series.
Was it!? I love the gate and extreme ghostbusters. (Pretty much all ghostbusters) Could you give a few more details of the episode please? Help jog my memory?
The effects and creature design is so damn good, especially considering the lower budget. The end demon is a really fun unique design and the eyes are really peircing and menacing.
so this is basically a kids version of evil dead?
Sounds about right
Would that make it THE WEE-VIL DEAD?
@@TheRealNormanBates the wevil dead wtf is that the communist version of it?
@@SpookyScaryGangRapingSkeleton It's the kid version of EVIL DEAD because it involves wee little kids.

plot twist our main hero later became ash
PG-13 was a LOT more raw back in the 80s.
Definitely
What's crazy about this movie is that most of the effect were done in-camera using forced perspective.
Beat me to it. I was going to say it got a lot of praise at the time because of the ground breaking use of this technique.
And I have no idea what this means. So I'm off off off to google "forced perspective".
veela lynne, it's the same technology Peter Jackson used to make the Hobbits appear smaller in the Lord of the Rings movies.
Jeff England but the stop motion looks awesome too!
You have to appreciate good stop motion, it takes days of patient work to make seconds of screen time.
Brandon, please review whatever movie you want. You always find the most delightfully weird shit.
(Did I do that right, or am I supposed to say Godzilla?)
I think you're supposed to demand more Godzilla reviews. But I second what you said.
And I'll third that! This channel is great!
I fourth this
Here to fifth that
6th to that, do Wolfman vs Godzilla
Damn, those special effects are good... like, *really* good. The movement is superb.
Stranger Things 3 really took influences from this film's finale
This movie freaked me out as a kid. Those little demons especially they could be hiding anywhere in my mind under the bed in the closest ahhh good times :)
Even when Brandon was a kid he still go that sarcastic dry look. Did he master it when he was younger? 😂 Did brandon even smile when he was a kid? Hard to imagine. 😂
The demons got their two tributes in order to Tribute Summon Red-Eyes Black Dragon!... or whatever the hell that thing is
You reviews are amazing and I find comfort in the knowledge that I am not the only stop motion and monster loving person out there lol.
17:36
This part just keeps making me laugh.
If he just went flying through the air it wouldn't be nearly as a funny. But the fact he not only get shot out of the house but does multiple flips all while staying in the same pose.
11:18 Do You Have Prince Albert in a Can? YOU DO? Well Ya Better Let the Poor Guy Out!
WOO-HAH! WOO-HAH! WOO-HAH!
An absolutely fantastic movie, one of my favorites. Not to mention just truly how awesome the special effects are.
I remember renting this movie from blockbuster. I thought it would be like the Goonies... I was kinda right, but let's just say this movie fucked me up pretty good when I was younger! Lol
I remember seeing part of this on TV as a little kid. I specifically remember the eye in the kid's hand and him stabbing it. Freaked me the Hell out but for years I could never figure out what movie it was, then I sorta forgot about it. Until I saw this review. Thanks Brandon you solved a nearly lifelong mystery for me.
Some years ago there were plans for a big scale 3D remake of The Gate, directed by Alex Winter. He wanted to bring back the monsters of the original film, along with new creatures designed by HR Giger. Winter hoped that the movie would be the start of a new franchise. Sadly, the production never started, and it was never said if Giger actually made some designs or if they were just in early talks. A real pity, that was a movie that should have been done.
This movie creeped me out as a kid but when I got older I loved this movie. And an old friend? *huge grin*
The little creatures in this movie remind me of those in "Subspecies".
Stranger Things: Hell Edition
Stranger Things but it's actually the 80s for real
Strangerer things
Stranger Things: Good Version that isn't overrated trash
This movie is so 80's I'm surprised nobody is wearing a Garfield T-shirt. Need I point out Chicago fits in perfectly?
The Chad Stranger Things.
As a kid, this movie was genuinely scary. As an adult, it's still great.
I was often in a rare group in my life. In this case we had a large C and Ku band satellite dish analog tv in the early 80s.
So this scared the shit out of me im the dark late at night changing satellites and scanning the 24 channels.
That eye thing really freaked me out.
Man the nightmares I hot from this.. heh good times
Yea
The scene with the dog messed me up. I was 13...
@@gp2917 yeah same. I mean, I was 9. And I still am..
That phone gag was hilarious.
Just found your channel. You remind me of GoodBadFlicks! Looks like you got another subscriber here!
And that kids is why you don’t pay the troll toll
Marcus Zyker
What you say? :P
Lol you win the comments
Bro PLEASE do “Critters”, “Ghoulies”, “Orca” and/or “Dolly Dearest”.
I saw this when i was little and it scared the shit out of me. Specially the eye in the hand
The stop motion in this is world class. Great effects that put a lot of CGI to shame.
this is the best fucking 80's horror movie, Hands down...no pun!
paladindarknite
Eye see what you did there (pun intended)
The thing is way better than this movie the gate is still good though
I remember my uncle used to put this on a lot for me so this film has a special place in my heart
I watched this every time it came on cable with my older sister sometimes. We were about the same ages as the kids in the movie. I actually was genuinely freaked out by the gore and ominous demon shit in this movie but it was just family friendly enough that it seemed all in good fun. Also I was always jealous of that rocket motor that you just set off with a wick instead of dealing with igniters and batteries. Apparently this was a thing in some places outside the USA? Also I used to call my sisters phone on the second house line and growl "youve beeeen baaaaad"
The Gate reminds me of a novel if Stephen King wrote a young adult book
Oh man, I have see this MANY times growing up on the local channels when I didn't have cable. Back when they used to run horror movies on Sunday afternoons.
On Saturday afternoons, Dr. Paul Bearer used to play horror movies when I was a kid.
@@funkyweapon1981 Channel 44 from Tampa?
This was my second scary movie I got introduce to as a kid
1st being Monster Squad
2nd The Gate
and the
3rd was Nightmare on Elm Street 3
AUSSIE TRANSFORMERS
I'm with you on 1&2, for me the 3rd was Cameron's Closet.
The Gate is a classic movie!
Yeah it is! No that's not sarcasm. I did enjoy that movie as a kid.
I saw part of this movie as a kid and completely forgot about it. I saw the first few minutes of this review the other day and decided to watch it last night and absolutely loved it! You dont really see movies like this anymore, horror movies with any child actors is rare and other than Stranger Things I cant think of any horror movies or shows with kids as even a single one of the main actors in the last 20 years. Not to mention horror movies targeted towards kids are unheard of anymore
@@arthas640 I still listen to the 'love will find a way' song from time to time. This movie was a mainstay on usa up all night. Certified throwback.
@@Solodolo84 funny how songs from movies stick with you like that. Some songs from scooby doo movies like Zombie Island and the one with the Hex Girls, and the ending song from Sleepaway camp have stuck with me for decades
@@arthas640 I wish there was some sort of movie soundtrack restoration program. It was one being put together for sleepwear camp since you brought it up. They just dont make songs like that anymore. Sometimes cheese is good 🍻
"The return of an old friend" leads me to believe one of 2 outcomes; The infamous Dropkick, or the Mean Green Mother from (not) Outer Space
Feed me, Seymour!
I love your reviews! They’re informative & hilarious ❤️😊
My brothers were inspired by this movie and when I was little, they'd torment me by pretending to be possessed by those demons 😂
😀
This is the movie from my childhood I thought was a fever dream. All these years my childhood fears were fueled by Canadians. Go figure.
Nice to see Deacon Frost was summoning demon gods even before he was a vampire.
He sure wasn't the first, nor will he be the last. Bet on it. XD
Review The Curse with Wil Wheaton. It's based on an HP Lovecraft story called "The Colour Out of Space"
“Hi! Just calling to tell you that answering a phone in a horror movie is usually a bad idea...” I’m slain!!!
Thank you for reminding me of a movie I haven't seen in nearly twenty five years. And need to see again now that I remember it exists.
yeah, The Gate is a pretty enjoyable movie. Hell, even the sequel is alright.
I remember this being on HBO all the time as a kid . A good little movie ! When he stabbed his hand with the eye is a scene I’ve never forgot 🤣.
HBO (especially after boxing went off) and usa up all night. This, nukem high, and creepshow 2 was in heavy rotation back then. I miss those days an awful lot.
Mr. Tenold you won me as a lifelong fan with your Godzilla content. I'm so stocked to see your next video! Your sense of humor, writing, and delivery has kept me entertained for years. Thank you!
13:59 "Oh shit! A hideous rat monster! Oh, never mind. It's just Terry."
This was a traditional Halloween VHS rental for me when I was a kid, along with Poltergeist, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Lady in White.
Something Wicked This Way Comes was so great i saw it as a kid back in the 80s many times
"Finger in the wall socket"..? More like "there's something about Mary" do.
Not gonna lie...when I was like 8 or 9, when the final monster appeared, I cried and ran out of the room. I was terrified.
"97 shir that's like 600 in dog years" I am dead.
I've been searching for the name of this movie for so long thank you for answering my prayers
I love these Canuxsploitation movies, I hope you do another month of them.
This is a GREAT 80s flick! It comes on Comet TV all the time during the fall season and I always find myself stopping to check it out. The effects have that great 80s "its not REAL demons but those are actual, physical objects" look to it and I love it.
While The Gate is a true classic, and well worth the watch, it’s sequel The Gate II - Trespassers was utter trash and I fully expect to see it reviewed when the revenge of canuxploitation makes is debut in 2019. Make it happen!!!
Yeah, saw this a long time ago, and when i watched Stranger Things i noticed similarities!
I grew up with this movie! I'm surprised you didn't use a "skinny puppy" reference when it came to the music? During their "too dark Park" and "Last Rites" tours back in the early 90s. They use footage from this movie in their backing trajectory real. Especially the scene with the eye in the hand!
Fun fact, the evil dead did not invent the necronomicon, the evil dead is quite literally set in the Lovecraft mythos judging by the purpose of the necronomicon.
Class of 1999, starring Bradley Gregg from 1989. That's a cool cross between Terminator & RoboCop, but with teachers & gangs.
Great review of one of those classics I had to wait until Amazon Prime to experience.
17:58 And the Terry went on to Star in Uwe Boll’s Alone In the Dark.
This movie was nightmare fuel for me as a kid especially the eye in the hand bit.
Watching your reviews makes me remind my childhood and the same time that I'm gettin' older.
Good job!!!
Hugs from São Paulo 🇧🇷
I grew up on MST3K, watching you is hilarious. Thank you so much for the humor, your references kill me.
This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. Glad i found this video :D great job
I remember watching this movie at the very end of the 80s (that construction worker guy was haunting me in my dreams for like a week or so). Considering this movie was made in 1987 (!!!) the effects are just mind-blowingly good. I mean, really, these are one of the most epic movie VFX from that era. I think some effects are much better than, say, in "Dream Warriors" (same year, twice bigger budget).
This has been a favorite of mine for years. For a good 8 years between 6 and 14 I didn't know what it was, I just remembered that phone melting when I saw it at 6. Stuck with me forever. Now it's more of a "relaxing" horror movie, but as a kid I was pretty scurred.
I didn't see this in the theater unfortunately. We rented it just as it came out on VHS. My brother and cousin and I watched. I remember it being so much better than I was expecting.
"I think Freddy Krueger might be inside your drywall!"
How much you wanna bet that the effects guys are using the same chunks of foam from _Ghostbusters_ that were used in the scene where the Terror Dogs made indentations in Dana Barrett's door?
The Diablo joke really brought me back, funny as hell to. Thanks for the great vid.
Brandon you should do a review of the Gate II.
I remember seeing this on opening weekend when the movie first came out. I never thought I would be able to see this movie again. Thank God for Blu-Rays.
As a group some neighbourhood kids and me were given money by the adults to get a nighttime movie during a big summer holiday. Went to the tiny local store and saw ‘the Gate’ on the shelf and was so excited. I’d seen it the year before at the drive-in and absolutely loved it. I must have been pretty intense when recommending it to everyone else because they agreed to rent it just to shut me up. I insisted because it was an amazing movie, but no one else cared. So I watched it again, alone and by myself in a dark rec room; the pariah of the neighbourhood as everyone else played outside. But I’ll say the same thing now, I said back then - worth it.
Omfg the "what were you all doing in that closet?" Was so perfect I haven't stopped laughing
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I used to draw and make sculptures of the demons. My friends and I even made stop motion films in art class based on it. Wow, I wonder if those VHS tapes we made still exist somewhere, not like I could find a VCR to play them on anyway..
Glad you're feeling better, Brandon!... and that you got outta Channel Awesome's implosion unscathed, too...
Some ideas for you to review:
White Fire
Space Thunder Kids
Order of the Black Eagle (trust me)
Shin: Kamen Rider Prologue {Not a bad movie, just want to see you review it}
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (Again, not a bad movie, just want to see you review it)
I like Godzilla vs. Biollante better.
OMG, the stop motion in that movie looks amazing!
I agree! The effects are pretty great. Especially when the zombie falls and shatters into those little demons.
I remember coming across The Gate on cable tv once years ago. For some reason, the picture quality was crap. Looked more like Things than what I'm seeing in this video.
this movie is like when Poltergeist and the Evil Dead are combined together, btw Brandon you should review it's sequel "Gate II" now that it's out on DVD and Blu-ray!
One of my favorite movies of the 80's. Saw it as a kid and it scared the crap out of me.
For a recommendation, I'd also like to request another favorite of mine, the Wraith. Sweet cars, amazing music, and Charlie Sheen!
Don't forget Clint Howard and (yowza!) Sherilyn Fenn!
Another drive in viewing for me with this'n. Loved it!
Godzilla comes back next episode!!
Please let it be Godzilla Final Wars!!
Tanner Price nah, I say it should be Godzilla vs Megalon or Godzilla vs Biolanti. Final wars should be later on.
Really? I hope it’s GMK or Godizilla Vs Mothra: Battle for Earth
Honestly, I would like to see Gamera’s Heisei series.
Chris Ramirez thats a good one too
Lordgaga160 or Shin Godzilla
It’s godzilla vs megalon but I don’t think it’s his next review for good reason in that it gets annoying getting asked constantly to review Godzilla
Your reviews are pure gold! Great sense of humor!!! Hilarious!!!!
The gate and things are the ones I've been waiting for you to review.
Love your stuff so much. Keep going for at least another 6 years. k Thanks
This is one of my all-time favourite movies. I'm glad you liked it. Great video!
Hey Brandon, love your stuff and will be signing up for your patreon soon. I got some recommendations:
In the Mouth of Madness
Dogs
Legion
Gamera 2: Gamera vs Legion
Hobo with a Shotgun
Please do Beyond the Gates (2016). It’s a movie about two brothers who find a mysterious vhs board game and play it, but with dire consequences. And also do Death Tube (2010). It’s a Japanese Saw knock off, Nuff said.
Are those demons, or the little blood gremlins from Subspecies?
Saw "The Gate" in the theatre during its initial release, and although the ending, where (SPOILER) even the dog is OK (PG13 requirement?) the effects were outstanding for the time (we really need a return to stop-action fx) and was well worth the $3.00 ticket price (yup, movies weren't always $20 to get in!)
I remember seeing this on late night television.. well late nighy television for a 9 year old. anyways the little demons scared the shit out me. I had so many nightmares of them after. I have tried to remember the name of the movie for years so thanks for helping me rediscover this great canadian classic. also Sacrifice is a great band! torment in fire!
When I was a kid in the 80's this was on of my favorite video store rentals. Definitely still like it.
An old friend...??
*_DOUG McCLURE!!!!_*
Wazzup brandon i have only onr request, I need u to review Creepshow
My grandparents always had a vhs copy stuffed away in the back of their closet. When I was really little, because the light was always off in that closet and because the cover freaked me out, I always thought it was cursed and that’s why the light never came on.
That movie looks awesome! I had never heard of it before so thanks for sharing Brandon.
Finally been waiting on this one.
Do you remember when monster madness talked about this one
Pepperidge Farm remembers!
Right. Grew up watching this
