    INFP here. I've been told I have a quirky sense of humor. I find random things hilarious. Example: I was messing around with a keyboard and discovered it could make lots of sounds, like different animals, honks, etc. For some reason playing all those crazy sounds together had me laughing so hard I nearly fell out of my chair. Stuff like that really gets me. And I usually laugh at inappropriate times - like when people didn't mean to say or do something funny. :p I'm not a fan of slapstick - watching people fall down or hurt themselves in stupid ways just makes me go OUCH!

  • @neodlehoko404

    I rarely make actual jokes (INTP - Ne/Si), but I do say funny or humorous things, the caveat is, half the time people don't pick up on the joke, which is sad, so perhaps objectively I'm only half as funny as I think I am. In addition, those "jokes" tend not to be the things I find *really* funny; the stuff that I find hilarious I can't always share, I have to laugh by myself, in my room, in the dark (it's usually a meme), with nobody to share it with because I don't know anyone else who would understand that particular context and... #ThisIsSoSadAlexaPlayDespacito
    Anyway 1000% relate to what you guys said about Ne Si humor. I have an INFJ friend who is notorious for completely missing all the jokes we make about him - and even if we explain it, he just smiles affectionately, he doesn't necessarily crack up.
    That being said, I tend not to enjoy shows like family guy or the simpsons or Big Bang theory; the jokes are almost too obvious and lack some depth. A friend of mine said she noticed I liked lots of UK comedy because it's subtle and very pessimistic. The humor is in the Ne weirdness among general Si relatableness. This is why sitting in a classroom and watching people is usually hilarious - I'm often cracking up by myself at the back of the classroom, for no real explainable reason - just that it reminds me a bit of a sitcom and it's funny, because it's real life.
    Also for Si users, since words come with a lot of Baggage, when there's an unexpected crossover of meaning in the right (or wrong) context, we immediately find it hilarious.
    Somewhere in there is a coherent thread. Sorry 💁🏾😅
    Awesome, loved it.

    (ISFP)
    My humor is defined as “affiliative” based on the test I’ve taken. I do use humor because I enjoy seeing other people laugh, and it makes me feel like I’m doing something good in the world.
    My humor is more dry, and just weird. Like you can tell an elaborate joke and I would just let out a slight chuckle.
    But if you do something really dumb I’ll lose it.
    I’ve also noticed my humor tends to be more “physical”. Like if I’m trying to make other’s laugh I tend to use a lot of gestures and just use my body a ton rather than words.

    ENFP here! For me absurdity (Te) is very funny! I also like to do a joke in a form of a statement and come back with it after some time has passed and the topic is about something different. It just comes back suddenly and then starts to be an inside joke. I sometimes come back with this even years after. It may be the Ne making an absurd connection of a new situation with an already introduced joke.(Si memory).

    I think Ne users tend to find more things funny in general, and crack more jokes too?
    Ne types = goofy, joking around way more, relaxed ....
    Ni types = more serious, goal aimed, tension (and usually appreciate if you can make them laugh more - they seem to have more of a need for it - possibly due to their more serious nature)

  • @faywillowstream
    @faywillowstream 5 лет назад +35

    As an Ni/Se user, I love referential humour. Like, the more layers of the joke, the better! But I also have an extreme opposite appreciation for really quick slapstick humour that has 0 context whatsoever. I love memes more than anything though; it combines absurdity with It’s Funny Because It’s True. I’m also high Fe so tone/body lingo is VERY make or break for me, and my taste is incredibly specific. Even though I had a goofy side most of my life, I actually didn’t find my sense of humour outside real life scenarios until tumblr and vine were a thing.

    • @flamingomingo9810
      @flamingomingo9810 11 месяцев назад +1

      I’m an isfp and I can definitely relate to the tone/delivery of the joke being almost more important than the joke itself. The joke has its purpose, but I find myself thinking about the situation as a whole “meriting (my version of) funny” as opposed to the joke itself making me laugh. And I love my slapstick

      I like the logic behind what you're saying, my ENTP brother is a big fan of puns, too. Thing is, I'm an INFP and I also enjoy puns a lot.
      (I've always tested out as INFP, and I gravitate a lot towards Fi-Ne, but lately I've noticed that a lot of the stuff that's supposedly INTP-ish applies to me as well...? Is humour even something function/type-specific?)

    • @heatherbryant4197
      @heatherbryant4197 5 лет назад +6

      I've always associated puns with Ne. High Ne-users can't help but see connections between homophones and words with multiple meanings. Try reading the phrase "Geurilla warfare" without imagining gorillas beating their chests or the word "patience" without thinking about people in the hospital. Lol
      I like puns, double-entendres, and other wordplay/linguistic humor too (INTP) and don't like slapstick comedy. But I think your association with Ti might be related to the Ti-users pride in their knowledge (what others see as intellectual arrogance) and classification of systems, which leads us to both take pride in understanding the rules of grammar and quickly notice errors in language usage. A misspelling can easily create humor where it was unintended, like when your insurance only covers trips to the "hopsital" -- that's a hospital for bunny rabbits 😹 I think it (Ti) also causes us to enjoy crafting "intelligent humor" or "dry, witty" jokes that require a baseline level of understanding to "get" that other "intelligent" people will appreciate. It's like their knowledge makes them "in on the joke." And most INTPs I know like inside jokes. I think appreciation of inside jokes comes more from Si though.
      I am reminded of this joke from Family Guy ...
      ruclips.net/video/iYhYzqqs8pQ/видео.html
      I think Ne also leads us to appreciate irony.
      It's difficult to describe my personal style of humor. It includes what I can only describe as half-sarcastic self-depricating humor. But I actually do think high Ne-users can appreciate dark humor. I'm pretty sure my mom is an INFP and her sense of humor is very dark.
      No matter how much you push the envelope, it will still be stationery (pun intended).
      A good example from George Carlin: "Atheism is a non-prophet institution"

    • @heatherbryant4197
      @heatherbryant4197 5 лет назад +4

      @@Commenter339 I'd look closely at the differences between Fe and Fi because INTPs with high aspirational Fe can type as INFP on tests that really only type based on dichotomies rather than functions. I thought I might be INFP for a while but then I realized most of my "Feeling" traits were Fe (empathy, absorbing other's emotions, self-sacrificing, being sensitive to the emotional "climate," wanting harmony, good at reading others' feelings and likes while being very slow to process my own feelings and terribly indecisive and unopinionated on how I feel about many things. Fi makes a lot of value-judgements so theoretically it is possible that you're an INFP who values logic, which could make you feel INTP-ish, but having an affiliative temperament usually makes INFP focus more on people-related values, like civil rights or social justice etc. (even if they're holed up in their rooms and not interacting with people). However, I think it's very likely that some INTP traits are relatable to you because both INFPs and INTPs have Ne parent and Si child (which also means Ni critic and Se trickster), and both lead with a dominant introverted judging function. Both types are also fairly uncommon so there's a bit of that "outsider/outcast/unique" feeling attached.
      I don't think humour is entirely type-specific. A lot of it can be learned behavior, influenced by family, friends, culture, religious beliefs and values, etc. But I do think that certain types of humour are processed & generated more naturally by certain functions & combinations of functions.

    I’m an INTP and was the comedian in my family from my earliest memories, but I could never tell a canned joke like “A priest, a rabbi and a lawyer walk into a bar…” without messing it up. Eventually everyone would start laughing whenever I began telling one of those jokes because they knew that I was bound to say something like “No wait, it was a dog, a cat and a parrot…”.
    On the other hand, I can find humor in almost anything, sometimes twisting words or phrases, sometimes seeing connections that make serious things or situations appear silly. But I often keep the humor to myself because there is too much information to transmit.

    Ni/Se here. I love dark humour, satire, awkward comedy and "in" jokes, so Alex got it all spot on.
    About memes, I think there are broadly 2 types: one needing context, the other that's probably more Se where it's just funny subjects in universal poses or facial expressions with the caption as punchline. I like both equally, but not the former without context for obvious reasons.
    I just wanted to comment on stand-up comedy where Alex mentioned that she finds it hard to follow standup that's trying to paint a picture(?) That's just one type though. There are many types of standup, and my favourite are the gritty ones that really dive into / take the crap out of the human condition, or when the comedian's just painfully self-deprecating 😂 Two of my favourites are Chapelle (social commentary) & CK (gritty observational).
    Of late, I've started to take to gifs and use them liberally in chats with friends and colleagues, which just takes Se humour to another level.

    INTJ here (Ni-Se) - I find jokes that play on the realities of life funny. British comedians do this well because they will take an every day thing or occurrence and twist it in a way that is funny. I don't find puns funny at all; as Alex was saying it takes me too long to process the actual joke and by then I don't find it funny because it just becomes an "ah-ha!" moment instead. Comedies like Black Adder and Only Fools and Horses are funny but only if the joke comes on slowly otherwise the joke can easily go over my head. I also like sarcasm and wit; if characters have witty come backs or insults then I find it hilarious because that is my own type of humour.

I really like the scene with the actors and Blackadder constantly mentioning MacBeth to them, but it's only funny because of the scene preceding it where Blackadder tells Baldrick not to do it and why not, so we have context for why the actors react the way they do. Other the hand, something very simple can get me rolling. Like recently a gif of this dog chasing a squirrel or something towards a backyard fence, and the dog leaps over the fence and does a full mid-air flip and disappears behind the fence. That just killed me.

    Hi, ladies! ENFP! And I'm somewhat "known" for witty, well-timed comebacks and interjections. I think that would describe my humor. I was never the, "Two priests walk into a bar..." kind of joke teller. It's always related to the situation I am currently in. My mother (ISFP) is always amazed by how quickly I am able to find one or two words that perfectly fit the situation or my response. Especially if I manage to tie it into something personal to that she forgot about. I already know that it could be my Ne making rapid associations combined with my Si reaching back to pull out relevant things to make it funnier for the person I'm talking to. And, no, I really don't need to know the background of the interaction to know if it's funny or not - and if it's not funny to me, I'll throw something on top to make it funny. My boyfriend always cracks up because he'll be watching something on TV and I'll walk in, right smack in the middle and respond to what is on the screen in that second - or laugh just based on what I saw in the last few seconds.
    Like, I always enjoy when a comedian can establish a joke at the beginning of their set and then find a way to circle back around to that joke in a totally unrelated one (usually by the end of their performance). And I love family guy! But I don't care too much for humor that too slapstick-ish.
    Lol, my comments are always so long but I hope you don't mind. Thanks for this vid, girlies!

    I dont know if this is necessarily related to humour but the idea that Ni/Se needs to know context for something to be funny, but Ne/Si can take things as they are makes so much sense to me in relation to watching films. I know a few xSFJs that can rarely watch the same movie more than once, but I & many Ni/Se users I know get uneasy at the thought of watching something new because there is no context. I personally (INFJ) could watch the same shows and same comedians and same movies multiple times around.

    I'm not exactly sure of my type, but my humor is pronounced, dry, sarcastic and witty. I love and appreciate wit and true humor, and to me it seems more funny the more subtle it is. If it's just trying too hard, it's not funny. A lot of humor that is billed as dry or sarcastic isn't even funny to me either. What's hilarious, absolutely hilarious, to me, is something like Gilbert and Sullivan: "Do you mean to say that you practised upon our credulous simplicity?" or "She will be faithful to our suit, till we are wed (and even after.)" I like what you said about playing Ne against Si expectations. I think that rings true.

    I think I am infp, but I am actually not good with pun. I just like random things that makes no sense. I don't think much about it. It's just funny. I would be laughing at random things that comes to mind. When I tell people what I am laughing at, people would have no clue where I pull the thoughts from.
    Now that I think about it, I actually don't like all random humor. I like the stupid ones, but if it has elements of discrimination or destruction of a character simply just to make the audience laugh, I don't think it's that funny. So, shows like family guy or south park has too much of those elements in them for me to enjoy it. I used to watch it when I was younger and laugh at it, but as I grew older I start to understand how it really feels like to be put in some of those situations or see these situations happening to people in real life. It just doesn't feel right, so I just eventually stop watching them.
    I now watch those Japanese comedy more. The guys who get smacked if he laughed at something funny. At least it is not on the topic of discrimination and the people doing the show seems to have a good laugh about it themselves. I know it's hard to escape the fact that we may be laughing at people's pain and misery, but I guess when it happens to me, I know to laugh at myself on it and not take life too seriously. It feels like that's the real purpose of comedy.

    I related to the Ne - Si stuff about word's that have multiple associations and trying to use the ones that have the most. Also thing's that I know are the opposite of logic are really funny to me, weird because I'm INTP. logically illogical is my FAVOURITE style of humour, I think that's what you call IRONY.
    Also like you said, I judge things on a joke by joke basis, so even if I'm watching a sitcom that I've seen every previous episode and know the characters, I'll still judge scenes as funny and unfunny based off the actual joke being said/content. But I also can let the unfunny stuff slide, kind of like quantity over quality, even though I'm mostly judging on a joke-by-joke basis.

  • @peregrination3643
    @peregrination3643 5 лет назад +4

    (INTJ) I definitely need to be familiar with the characters and setting to find things funny or even like in other ways--respond emotionally, find it interesting, and such. First big chunk of chapters or episodes I'm trudging through an awkward introduction phase. Or, to use Gilmore Girls as an example, I love the humor built into the setting and characters. But until I rewatched the series many years later, even though I had seen the episodes many times each in the past, I understood very few references--and the wording for jokes is heavily reference focused. In general, I also like more real things, like laughing at sad realities as you mentioned.
    If I had to make assumptions from the people I know, I'd say judging functions have some role, but it's mostly perceiving the the ranking of perceiving (the P's are more eccentric with humor than the J's, regardless of axes). Maybe perceiving for approach and judging for more specific aspects of subject matter.
    ENFP friend: definitely into things that have no relation to each other but one random thing that to me has no bearing on anything. We rarely laugh at the same things. We're complete duds with each other when it comes to humor.
    ISFP friend: can have some of the irreverence my ENFP friend has, loves most puns and sitcoms, yet generally needs some situational context outside of those two things and will be on my humor wavelength.
    ESTP dad: has very similar humor in life but not shows (he hates any serious tones in drama, even the kind in some sitcoms, but he loves things like Family Guy and The Simpsons)
    ISTJ mom: and I can watch comedies together (we both like lighthearted jokes between serious tones and story progression), but don't have much real life humor in common.
    ENTJ brother: can be similar to me but more irreverent on the insensitive spectrum and is more patient with trying new shows or comedians (but taught me the "three episode rule" that I practice to this day before I decide to give up on a show).
    My poor ESFJ grandmother lost all her jokes on me when I visited recently, lol. I avoid talking to her because everything I say goes over her head as well.

    When it comes to dark humor, I've noticed Si-doms find it funny when the point of humor is reiterated. Such as a tragic event happening, then a shocked witness stating bluntly that it happened. I, as an Ni-dom, don't find it funny, but prefer a more cryptic form of dark humor, such as the aspect of a razor-edged surfboard...

      Well the joke there is that the blunt recognition of the fact is not enough to actually empathize with what happened so it’s like people who die are too fucking niche no one who I know is dead, or well I’m not dead and I’ve never felt like dying so I don’t get the big hubbub of whether it’s good or not. The event declines from something about our recognition of what systems our working under the hood to a shit movie where nobody can explain the ending and this dying thing doesn’t seem interesting

    Is it weird that I'm an INFJ, but I relate to the sense of humor of the INFP more?
    The INFP one when she said she thinks the joke is funny in itself, and INTJ when she said she would find things more funny by seeing them herself rather than having someone explaining them to her. I usually get bored when the joke is too long, and there are too much explanation; like just get to the point and make me laugh! That's how I see it. I also like dark comedies, but not offensive ones such as the phobic ones, even tho I may giggle a little bit before feeling bad.

    I’m on the Ni/Se-axis, although I’m a little unsure about what people would categorise my humour as. Jokes tends to confuse me. It’s also the issue of most jokes simply being boring or “unreachable” to me. A lot of friends have been surprised by my humour, and that’s kinda funny. I can often laugh at small details (people standing in the exact same way for a ridiculously long conversations without even realising that their poses are the same; people constantly talking about their differences, and then showing up with identical bags/jackets/the same kinds of coffee or anything like that; people exclaiming the same thing without seeming to have the same context in mind). My humour can otherwise be rather dry, or rather dark. It really just depends on my mood. I’m not too fond of wordplays either, although I can laugh if someone is way too confused by seemingly identical words... I guess that part of my humour sometimes is closing in to cruelty. The rest of it is basically just me pointing out my own inconsistencies during conversations (for example if I’m trying to explain something that could easily be said in three words, but me being too awkward to do so and thus creating this endless loop of meaningless vagueness; it could also be me pointing out that I opened a conversation with one claim, but me changing my mind and saying the exact opposite in the middle of the conversation). I don’t know... it’s really just an impulsive thing... but jokes and so forth tends to be soooooo boring 🤷‍♀️😅

    (INTJ) I agree with the Socionics standpoint where both my Ni and Ne are pretty strong, and I can actually do that Ne randomist humour -- and can often come up with something quickly in the moment -- but I couldn't do it all day and I'll want to focus in on something and sharpen it. I don't like puns by themselves, but I love dark British humour and the dark puns of someone like Jimmy Carr, where they'll create a horrifying image with a simple play on words.
    If I'm the one making the joke, I like making people's jaws drop in shock, and I live for those moments where you can break someone with a sentence, and they literally fall over laughing and are gone for the next five minutes. Can't pay for that. 🙂

    I wouldn’t think of humor as a personality based thing. To me, humor seems like more of a cultural phenomenon. Certain people digest humor in different ways, like how the UK and the US differ. Your humor can be based on your upbringing and the people you surround yourself with. I would suggest running some experiments first or doing some surveys. Wouldn’t want to end up using false consensus bias.
    I’m an INTP but I relate to both of you guys’ senses of humor in different ways. Love the videos.

    As an INTJ I relate a lot to what Alex said about needing context for jokes! Often it takes a few episodes of a comedy show for me to start to think of it as funny. Also, while I do appreciate puns and word play it can take a moment for me to catch them, and even then I think they are more just fun than funny. As for surrealism, I love it for the visuals, imaginative, and creativeness, but often only find it humorous when I have context to compare the absurdity with.

      ditto! lol I got the joke you gave as an example, but puns aren't my strong suit usually. I visual jokes too and that doesn't always work obviously lol. Even with the puns I get, it's funny b/c the image is funny.
      For example, I said that joke to myself, understood the pun, then visualized a clock going to a table of food to get 2nd's, and then giggled at that imagine.-This all happened within seconds;
      I didn't even realize other people didn't visualize jokes until I read this comment section.
      I like certain memes (LOTR peculiarly) b/c I know the characters, and while the play on words can be amusing, I realized what's the most funny part of it for me, is I visualize the character saying what they are saying in the meme with their voice and mannerisms and that's what makes me laugh.
      Is that how other experience memes?

    INTJ here. I find that people often laugh at things I say when I am not trying to be funny, like Calypso at 2:54. Puns make me smile more than laugh & I can understand puns faster than I can make them. Random Si humor that's communicated in a dry way goes over my head. I often assume the person is being serious *especially* when I don't know them and I have no context of their personality and why they think what they're saying is funny. I think memes are great, because I may not understand the meme, but I because memes are used in context to something else and are more physical illustrations of an idea, I get what they mean. I do have a proclivity towards dark humor based on reality, but I ironically find shows like Family Guy or Simpsons makes me depressed because the bigger picture of their surrealist chaos stresses me out and seems nihilistic.

      Tash * I’m an INFP but I could have written that post^^ most of my friends are high Si users and they’re dry delivery of jokes or sarcasm almost always go over my head. It’s a running joke that they have to explicitly explain their sarcasm to me. They say it’s obvious because what they’re saying is “too ridiculous to be real,” but I find so many things possible from moment to moment that I don’t doubt they could happen. They’re just small minded 🤣😭 lol jk... sort of

    You ladies are terrific and I have watched almost every one of your videos since I discovered my INTJ self at the beginning of this summer. Reddit has a great community of "us". Perhaps sometime, you might consider doing an AMA on the MBTI subreddit or best yet, our INTJ subreddit. pretty please!

    INFJ. I’m an admitted “humor snob”. I think about this a lot, but not necessarily around mbti. Ni-Se humor is more of an acquired taste that requires investment and experience, while popular Ne-Si humor is cheap to make and easy to consume. Ni gets/understands most Ne jokes but they only clear the lower levels of funny and fall flat. Ni humor does include Ne humor but in moderation, and adds to to it.
    I understand and can appreciate good puns and random things, but it gets boring really fast if there’s not more depth. I prefer humor that’s is very dry, often dark, and builds on itself and/or is a commentary on life/society (don’t always need a lot of build up then and there; sometimes the culture and/or time in history is that context). I don’t like it when “jokes” are mean; punchline should be at the situation or wider concept, or if going to target someone, should punch up and their status/power is pretty clearly, to the intended audience at least, the context for the joke.
    So I really like absurdism and a lot of “British humor”-never understood why everyone said it was bad or they “didn’t get it” outside of a few cultural references. Examples off the top of my head: Monty Python, Camus, the Addams family, a lot of the news comedy shows like the daily show and its spin-offs, on RUclips ‘some more news’ and Contrapoints… there was just something new-ish recently but I can’t remember now

    Humour in general is based on breaking your expectations. In stand-up comedy, you set up expectations with the one or two intro lines, or describing the sotuation, there's that casual build-up, and then there's an unexpected or creative outcome, and the more unexpected it is, the funnier the joke is considered to be. I'm guessing this applies to all people. So, are you suggesting that the difference between types is the expectations they have towards different situations? Like, if your neighbour slipped on a banana peel and fell down the stairs, is it fair to assume that, for example, a Se-dom would find it funny because they find it sudden, strange or surprising, but a Ti-dom wouldn't, because a situation like that doesn't tickle their brain cells enough? 🤔 And a Ni-dom might, because they know that their neighbour is this stoic, grumpy, careful, nitpicky person whom everyone is tired of and was kind of wishing for something like that to happen?

    Hi! Love your videos! It's interesting when Calypso talked about Si expecting a certain reality based on past experience, and finding humor in something being out of it's element. I wonder if this could also be related to Ne enjoying exploring new possibilities? I also enjoy unexpected humor but maybe in a different way. As Ni dom, I think I am always making predictions like I can't shut it off, so I hate when things are too predictable. For example, Homer Simpson unexpectedly saying something witty will be funnier than normal, but if it's just two unrelated things brought together for the sake of them being out of place, I don't think that would be humorous. Si is the hardest function for me to wrap my mind around, because I always thought having a strong ability to recall and make connections was Ni pattern-finding... I was trying to relate with Alex on the Ni front but I don't think I have the same issue of needing extra context to find humor, perhaps because I just intuit the context. However, I definitely relate to being more visual in communication **Ni toggles** :)

    • @CasualCognition
      @CasualCognition  5 лет назад +2

      INFP: We're planning to make a video about this soon, but the difference between Ni and Si is basically the "point of internalization". Si retains information at the sensory level (objects and experiences) while Ni retains information at the intuitive level (patterns and conclusions, takeaways from groups of objects and experiences). Thus, people with high Ni often recall a general conclusion without being able to recall the specifics that led them to that conclusion. Meanwhile, people with high Ne can usually remember specific experiences but often forget the random ideas they've had unless they write it down. So in conclusion, both Si and Ni are strong at recall, but they recall different things.

    INTJ here, in my opinion structured jokes are usually funnier than puns and other forms of humour, that would be if it was well executed. Recently surrealism has brought a new part of my life to existence. With memes i like them to be as surreal and having no context as possible. And I'm a master of puns, that might be due to my subconscious ENTP

    What is the thought process for high Ne users? Do they not have to see flashes of images or visualize at all when communicating?

    • @CasualCognition
      @CasualCognition  5 лет назад +2

      INFP: My personal experience is that when people say things, I can visualize if I want to, but I don't have to visualize in order to understand. Oftentimes visualizing something is a conscious choice for me instead of an automatic response. I enjoy visualizing and do it a lot, but I would say I don't need it to let ideas sink in and communicate ideas.

    Ni-Se INTJ here. Many jokes I keep hearing are stuff almost everyone laughs at but I don't, because they are just references that I don't have context of, with very few exceptions. Now visual things I visually look at can be very funny. One random example. Those 3 black cannon balls by the cannon statues just make me go into "ROFL" mode and and I can't help myself 🤣

    As an Se dom / Enna 7w8 I love One Punch Man. You try to save the day using your last most ultimate lazor beam that almost kills you in the process, yet fails. Finally I come in and hit it with one of my normal punches only to be pissed off that it wasn't more challenging. Fun Question. Are there anymore Se doms or heavys that like One Punch Man humor? If so are there other examples of this type of humor? Also if you don't see the humor in it what is your type, ennagram, gender; or whatever else you'd like to reveal?
