Um..I know this is really late to ask and you probably won't answer, but does your book explain what to do? Like, when your floating or I call it feeling like a robot, as in, I am aware of my reality; I am conscious of my actions, but I don't emotionally feel anything that has to do with..um..my personal feelings. Like, if someone says "how are you?" Or my therapist says "And how does that tragic event make you feel?" it's like I get confused, bc I don't feel anything about it. I sound like I am reading a book. But God forbid I see a child mistreated or someone being bullied and I feel everything, but from their point of view. I stare at walls a lot, like, I'm just lost in thought. I barely leave my house. I don't understand how people make friends. I don't understand greed. People say I need to take better care of myself, but idk it feels selfish imo to make me a number one priority when I can do for others. But when I come up with solutions I don't know what to do or how to actually act upon them. Which upsets me a lot. I don't need to talk to people. I hate physical contact, it makes me cringe. I don't dress decent, brush my hair or wear a little make-up for me, like, I guess most do. I do it bc people have to look at me. My therapist tells me when I speak I am all over the place bc I am processing my thoughts out loud, but then he says I come to a profound conclusion, that is normally something he has never heard, but it makes perfect sense and is beautifully interpreted. But when he says that, i do not understand what was so great or why he asks me to repeat it. To me it's just common sense. Anyway, I apologize for the rant turned essay, but if your book can help with any of these issues, please, let me know. I am mentally exhausted all the time. I am tired of being tired. Thanks!

I wish I had kept a record of the number of times in life that I've put forward an idea or suggestion which has been put down and strongly reacted against; only for it to happen a year or two later when everyone thinks it's a great idea!

Or the number of times youve told friends and family the best advice that was ignored... only for them to come back 3 or 4 years later and say "yeah, you were right"...and then ask you for more advice that they will ignore... whats the fkn point... As an INFJ I really relate to your comments about trying to express thoughts. An INFJ's thoughts are full of detail and nuance, and it is difficult to translate this into words that will get the listener to experience your thought as you do. In addition, for the INFJ, it tends to be more important to communicate the feeling than the fact. So communicating in real time is difficult, but in writing there is the time to do the wordsmithing to get it right. As someone once said, INFJ's are clumsy talkers and eloquent writers.

I definitely feel this awkwardness! I can actually be a decent public speaker but when I'm say, in front of a group of people and someone puts me on the spot with a question out of left field I will completely blank. It's like the harder I try to think, the harder it becomes to present something coherent. Sometimes I feel like it's literally a physical challenge to speak.

Explains so much about my school life.
I was tested as an INTJ, and seeing this helps to explain why I had such issues with some subjects. Especially, say, ALGEBRA. I comprehend the concepts just fine. Solved the problems in my own way, and the answer was CORRECT, but the teachers would always become frustrated because either a) I wasn't doing it their way or b)the answer just came to me and I didn't show work at all.
Only 1 teacher asked me how I solved the problem in a shorter way, and let me do it that way.
Even in college, the professors HATED IT.
If they claim it is to get you to think "outside the box," then why was I punished for solving it in my "outside the box" way??
Never understood until now!! THANK YOU.

One time I had a panic attack during a chemistry quiz and watched the numbers scramble on the page. I just started writing numbers and got a 93%. She graded it on a curve so I didn't actually get 93% right I just did better than 93% of the class. I've developed a theory from that experience that during extreme stress you can only use the function most natural to you and it dictates how you respond during panic attacks. I'd like to add that, that quiz was the last grade for the class and I passed the class with a 90 because I did good on it.

I once did that on a math test. Wrote the solution out and everything after practically having a panic attack!
A day later, I was asked to stay behind. Thought I was in TROUBLE. Turned out, the teacher instead asked me how on earth I came up with the formula I had written down. It was a far shorter solution to the longer formula. Lol
I really had no answer except to go through what I had written down.
I never did really well in math because I solved things in ways the teachers and professors didn't accept. They wanted it THEIR way. From the book... Which I could never seem to grasp. Algebra and trigonometry? Sure. Plotting points on that graph can take a hike.

There was a time I thought a truely did poorly on my final exam for a mathematics course. Turned out I got an 80% & somehow, even though I missed one too many quizzes, I got to approx. 88.8% of an overall class grade. One top of that, LUCKILY, the teacher changed the grade brackets so a 87% and up was an A. It's a good thing I genuinely tried what I could on the final exam even though I am so forgetful. Ni definitely helps me figure out a process through some form of logic especially if I've seen it before but can't be sure for my life. The class was online but exams were in person. I struggle to study as one could (I wait until the weekend before a test mainly bc then I am actually likely to remember significant things) because I find it easier/more fun to figure something out all over again .-. I took a pre-calc class in 8th grade and the week after it ended, I intentionally forgot it/let the knowledge gained pretty much escape to immeditely relax & because I was gonna have to take it all over again in tenth grade. Lol.

Does anyone else do this: I’m an INTJ and I can almost never remember a person’s name, but I remember things like how they like their coffee, their favorite drinks at a bar, their political affiliation, their favorite dog breed, etc... One week after meeting my wife for the first time and 3 dates later, I still had to keep asking her what her first name was. But she was amazed when I bought her some things from the grocery store when visiting her home and they were all the things - including her favorite specific brands - she used all the time! She later admitted she thought I was very weird. I will sometimes see someone I used to work with 15 years ago (I’m now 60) and I will have to ask them their name, but I will comment how they’re still driving white Toyotas, that they’re still wearing the same style glasses, talk about how much they must dislike Trump because they are a liberal Democrat and ask them how upset they were when their favorite TV show (Mystery Science Theatre 3000) was cancelled. It is pretty weird!

    • @honestlyjustyeet
      @honestlyjustyeet 3 года назад +6

Well it's probably because you are paying attention to what your Brian Preceves to be more important. Names are just random labels to identify they are the thing that doesn't matter, but what the person likes and uses, and does is who they are, so the ni Dom trait is probably the reason. As he said in the video, your brain will pick up everything subconsciously, and inlist as the person it self. Being infj especially, they will probably do it more so then the intj, but we both will do it differently, and in similar ways. U being ti, means you will recognize and remember the stuff the person likes, or does, infjs, being fe's will remember the persons change in mindset, or reasons for doing, or remember the persons life. But even though I'm infj I can easily remember names, not always, but I can. Maybe being Fe, when I think. About the person, I will first remember their talking. How they spoke what they said, how they said it.Then their body triats, ect. I don't usually speak, to the person more so I observe then, talking to them. So the person first experience with me is in a group project and they don't know my new, but I already know half their life s toey the why they function, and ect. It's because that I remember other people, that I can remember their names, because I'll remember what other people around used to be, and what they said around that person.

I agree with nearly every point you made except perhaps some exceptions to talking about the past. If a person has had a traumatic past, then a form of PTSD might contribute to talking about past more often as a way of processing it. But an Ni user will not be tied to traditions. They may except some traditions but usually won't except "This is the way we have always done it" as a reason why. They will have to evaluate for themselves if they except past traditions. But the future is more important to them than the past. I see Ni as a concept of timeless and univeral. It reaches into the past and future as in archtypes but difficulty staying in the moment.

I'm also an INTJ and have a problem remembering names. This is the first time I come across someone linking it to Ni dominant. Thank you for that insight.
@Michelle Carter: an INTJ is a personality type with an "Intellectual" temperament style (mostly Abstract, Pragmatic and Systematic) and a finisher interaction style (mostly direct, responding, process oriented). If you enter "INTJ" in google, you'll be presented with a lot of information.

I relate very much so to most of this. However, I do refer to the past. Maybe it is because I have been betrayed many times and spend much of my time contemplating that pain, and oftentimes when conversing with people, if they say something that reminds me of the past I can often use it to help my explanation because I know that people need concrete examples to understand some things. :)

I love Ni but only realised I had it around age 50. This stuff should be mainstream and taught in schools. Personality is not controversial or complicated to understand, at least on a basic level.
Someone said to me they didn’t believe in MBTI. That makes no sense. Personality is definitely real. You might have an issue with the breakdown into types, but without understanding them, this is just dismissive ignorance.
Many think ‘you are what you are’ but there is power in self understanding, and understanding others and life in general, it’s a constant part of a healthy life. What MBTI offers is a special lens to allow deeper insight. I had worked out a lot about my own mind through trial and error, but early knowledge of MBTI and being an INFJ would have been really valuable to career and other aspects of life. I took a wrong career decision, which I am still paying the price for. It would have helped my dating life massively. Many people baffle me, they just can’t of won’t see this 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think the ability to concentrate is one sign, but not just "concentrate", it is rather like a synthezising focus that sort of blur the rest of the world out, almost to the point of memory black outs. Both fascinating and scary at the same side. As you said there is almost a dissociated element to infjs, rather than the typical neurotic or drifing element of the Infp...

If Ni fall into a daze or lost in the wood for some moment, the starting bait would somehow brought him back to prevent him from drifting farther. This is also why Ni attribute is not dreamers.

I've realized lately that sometimes when telling a story I will focus on these little details that are apparently important enough to me to include but are actually completely irrelevant to the point of the story.
Also, I often find that I'm so tuned into someone's emotional state when they are talking that I don't hear the words they are saying, especially if it involves technical details. 😴

I relate with everything that you described - except for " remembering names!" I don't have that problem, so much. My memory is not perfect but names are usually not a problem.
I think that Fe is the reason for this. Fe is a very " people oriented" function and remembering names is one of those Fe social skills that we are capable of employing - if we develop it - or" focus" - as you said.
Ni/ Ti loops are most likely responsible for these" memory gaps".

One scenario that I’ve encountered many times:
I’m in a conversation with someone, who asks a question that I haven’t thought about. My mind just kinda blanks, and I end up telling them that I don’t know the answer. A week (or month, maybe four) pass by, and the answer suddenly pops up inside of my head.
Another thing that’s fairly normal in my life:
I’m talking with someone, and is explaining my thoughts. It feels like I’m entering the state that’s kinda ideal for me to explain things, but then the other person interrupts with something that confuses me. My focus is now broken, and I no longer feel like I’m able to explain my thoughts. This is why I oftentimes write down my thoughts: I can sort and formulate them in a more logical sense, that makes it easier to keep up. These texts oftentimes end up as essays or something like that, but some people choose to only read the first two, along with the last three lines: they somehow fail to see how the rest is relevant, when it’s the rest that gives the actual answer.
Both of these things makes it hard to talk to people, although I try to be nice. It’s just easier to communicate by writing, although I know that I need to practice my talking-skills 🤭

Also these pattern reveals would hit me out of no where too and try to catch me off guard in the most random situations wether I’m talking to someone, eating or about to sleep. What helps me is journaling these thoughts down so I can flesh out these patterns more in detail and focus on my and other ppls emotions too.

All of these apply to me as an INFJ and really I'm impressed by these descriptions, especially how we can be spacey but still somewhat aware of our surroundings and/or what 'the point' or our intentionality is (well, if not totally withdrawn in contemplation), as well as the presentation of certain insights by some kind of geometric analogy. In my experience even more visceral or internal (quasi) sensations can guide intuition to pursue the right questions (say by asking if an explanation or account of some problem 'feels' right), and then as one becomes more acquainted with the problem, the imagery that it elicits and our familiarity with the thing becomes more vivid and multifaceted.
I'm also sort of convinced that anyone *independently* motivated to pursue something like teleology, or some kind of cosmic purposiveness (Aristotle and Hegel I think are good examples), must have quite a bit of Ni. I say that because I think many Ni types, whether they know about typology or not, know that their particular style of thought seems to depend on something like intentionality unfolding through time. I think a lot of us consciously recognize this current in our thought, and try to disavow ourselves of it, but can't. I think it's sort of the inverse of the detachment you referred to in that some insights seem to demand we believe in them, even in contradiction to some kind of evidence (which is probably where we get the reputation for being closed minded.)
An example of this would be that Marx thought the people's revolution was inevitable, but he didn't predict the birth of a middle class which extended the life of capitalism by centuries. But, if like Marx, you're taking a sort of Ni view w/r/t present material or economic systems in light of perpetual class conflict, something like the revolution *does* seem 'inevitable'. And someone holding this position in the Ni way can be completely, legitimately unbothered by the paradox in belief suggested by the fact that the people's revolution hasn't happened yet as predicted. Maybe it's through a decidedly impressionistic style of thinking that people like Hegel and Marx can somehow be right and wrong about the same things at the same time.

there is a little moment of absence/missing (because he doing something, a task or thinking) he can answer at very beginning : "hum ? what ?..."
It joint the sign with the filter between abstract/thinking and reality.
We have heard the sentence, without really listening, we may ask to repeat to be sure we have understand the sentence.
Happento me last weeks, when I say something to an INTJ coworker during reunion, or when he walking passing next to me, when he was on his thoughts.
As if you work with 2 screens, and you can move a window/navigator from a screen to an other, or let it half on a screen, half on the other.

This is also coupled with the feeling that it's "wrong" or "stupid" of me not to remember the name, so I also cannot bring myself to ask for a reminder unless it's during the initial conversation with that person (and I often forget to do that, so focused on learning about the person... except their name). As an Ni I frequently find myself having to do what I call backwards referencing. I soak up information and data like a sponge without actually consciously trying to learn anything. So sometimes someone will ask me a question, and after I answer them they will ask with astonishment “Where did you get that from?” Or, alternately, “Where did you learn that?” So I have to go backwards in memories to track down all the related bits of information and ideas led to my answer and where I came across them. I usually find them, but even I am sometimes astonished at how odd some of the sources are, such as a nature documentary that I was only half paying attention to during my childhood, and yet I can sometimes actually name it. My mind acted like the internet before the internet was invented: every piece of information is hyperlinked with every other piece of even vaguely related information, and everything-whether you like it or not-inevitably gets trapped there.

Very good. I do think it’s important not to confuse “use” or “strength” of a function and “preference.” An example is, INTP’s are very “strong” Ni users, Ni believed to be second to Ti and “stronger” than Ne, however it is unconscious to them and they do not “prefer” it. This is a point of contention and confusion in testing. It is very common on cognitive function test results when they are accurate for INTP to “score” highest in Ti then Ni... When slightly incorrect, higher in Ni than Ti is possible. I tested INFJ for 35 years on MBTI and am very much an INTP. However in observing you, I see the differences between us but not necessarily because of your “stare”... More from your “strength” of Fe/vociferousness. I see as much of the “Ti squint” in your emotiveness as any, “Ni stars,” both of which are common to me as well.

An apt descritption of the experience of being Ni dominant. I like the way you start from the superficial or outward appearance of a trait (the stare, epiphanies) and move to the inner meaning of that phenomena (unconcious shifting of information, the narrowing of focus). And this has helped me think more clearly about the Ni/Ne distinction, which given the ineffable and inherently inwards nature of intuition is certainly one of the subtler perceiving dichotomies.

Sometimes when Ni hits the nails, it's like an anchor that unmovable so the other functions can't even debate it but rather supporting the conclusions that Ni already established. When this is happening I'm really feeling awkward with myself. Haha. All in all the second last one of your points can't even be fake by others that not having Ni dominant. Thanks for the sharing, Ren!

I can concur with virtually all of these, with the sole exception of those relating to reference to the past. I mull over the past a lot, more than I am comfortable with since it often makes me feel a little depressed (sense of loss, since even if present conditions are good they are still fundamentally different from the previous state of things, so there is still loss) and somewhat sick (idk why, I just feel sort of mentally muddy if I spend too much time being nostalgic, sort of twisted inside). But despite that, I still do it a lot, and often catch myself positively reminiscing past circumstances, and occasionally having nostalgic "episodes". I also have a tendency to make references to the past when "putting things forward" so to say, in a way trying to justify my actions and thoughts via precedent (i.e. an action is righteous or possible because it has been done before, or because something similar has been done before, or because something similar was attempted and the conditions were right but it was never quite fully realized).
I don't really know why this is the case. My best guess is that I'm just exceptionally introverted and isolated, and that this has led to an overpowering of my introverted functions at the expense of my extroverted functions. Naturally then, if I were to "get out of my bubble" and engage with the outside world, I would find that those weaker introverted functions (namely Si and Ti) would be decreased. I think I may already have seen signs of this, since I almost seem to forget myself when I am engaged in something (I don't know if this is related but I am frequently infuriated when I remember that I need to eat), but it's likely too early to tell, and in fact I don't really need to know in order to find out.
Anyway, a good video. Thank you for making it.

Bro the amount of Dejà vu's and lucid dreams that i experience are just SO OVERWHELMING.
Also my brain constantly connecting dots is quite fascinating. I be doing nothing just chilling and then oops there we go again, my brain just came up to a new conclusion, and i'm just like "yeah now it makes sense"
Also i sometimes watch videos of myself and i'm like "i can't remember that i did that" lol it's scary

    THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! ❤

Yes, the floating feeling of being detached while doing things alone or communicating with others. Like two realities at the same time. Contemplative all of the time. Right, being a creative person, how do I explain this in human terms! It’s comforting to understand that it’s not just me.

I work in a school and remembering all the names has not been easy or fun, for me. There’s a trick that sometimes works though. I can always remember someone’s name if I already know someone with that same name and I immediately, upon meeting them, attach the new person with that name to the one I already know and remember.
Also, my life partner is an ISTJ and he has an insanely good memory for names and once he shared with me that he used to get extremely offended if someone didn’t remember his name. We both had a good laugh about that, since we both know how hopeless I am with names.

This is amazing! Many of those things I've noticed about myself but never heard anyone else describe before. I can't remember names to save my life, which can be really embarrassing. The film thing, the circular thing, the frustrating inability to immediately verbalize ideas. It's no wonder that I'm so terrible at job interviews! Now I feel a bit less weird 😅. I feel like I'm somewhere between INFJ & INTJ.

So, SO helpful. Thank you! I've always given myself a hard time for not having the facts lined up when I want to make a point -- so much so that I just don't offer my ideas for fear of being challenged -- when I know that what I have to say is truly insightful and helpful. I resonated with most of these. Except the stare -- not sure about that, but then I'm not looking at me! I tend to avoid eye contact when I have to get into my own shoes and see what I want to express. Anyway, tremendously helpful ... now I can relax and just be me!

Can you tell I'm on a quest to binge watch all of your videos? ;) OMG - I lovingly call my inability to articulate my thoughts my mouth funnel. Because I feel like I think in symbols most of the time, I sometimes feel like all of the thoughts are trying to pour out of a tiny spout and it is incredibly taxing and slow. ;) I am pretty good with names though - I think because I link the name to a "symbol" of the person that encompasses more than their surface characteristics. I have spent the last few years leading a non-profit too, which gave me a lot of practice in honing this skill in a way that works for me. Thanks for all of your great videos!

I would say the main diference of Ne vs Ni is Ni takes many different ideas, thoughts and events and tries to distill it down to a single idea or insight. Whereas Ne takes a single idea and uses that a jumping off point to go in all directions.

I know you are an INFJ, but@@RensRoomdon't you find annoying that there is this overpopulation of fake INFJs and INTJs in any random MBTI comment section?
I have not meet a single clear and obvious INTJ in real life in my entire life and I am 33 years old.
It is very puzzling specially when random accounts say "As an INTJ female, I....."
These people, seems as if they don't get the idea of how rare is 3%.
Sorry, needed to rant a bit.

Very recognizable. I love seeing how you add nuance to your story. 1) Nietze is an INTJ, at least that is generally accepted. 2) With Ti dom this works differently, at least I think so because of course I am not a Ti dom. I do that myself all the time, because during my explanation I realize that there are people who may have a different opinion.
Thanks for your clear explanation. I love your videos.

Wow, legit. The circling back, the name forgetting, the stare, yes. The whole 'oh i solved it. Wait when-?" Lol; and yeah I reference my past, but only when it's relative or important. Yes, unlike infps which reference their past at every moment; thdnkyou very clear on sych abstract and almost counter intuitive topics. Spacey but focussed. Yes.
It took me a long time, and its still difficult - being infj in society. The 'language barrier' is impossible. But ive also grown to love who i am, esp thanks to finally hearing other infjs. Thanks bro

Wow! I am so glad I found this video. I am currently trying to find my type and a few days ago I was wondering what each dom type was good at remembering and bad at remember. Stuff like names, past experiences, mathematical memory, emotional memory, social memory, and vocabulary memory. I asked other mbti types of social media what they were good at remembering and bad at remembering. Unfortunately either I am not good at expressing myself in writing, people didn't care, didn't know how to respond, or they don't know where their strengths lie. So most replies I got were people making jokes like "I have the worst memory!" Or "Can't remember shit syndrome" It was rather annoying as I wasn't getting the answers I was looking for even when I rephrased my question to these people. Thankfully I found this video which helped clear it up a bit more for me. I AM SO THANKFUL! I was not expecting to find exactly what i was searching for so easily and quickly

Great description on Ni - I have seen alot of people struggle to explain this but this captures lot of what it is. I am Intj and it can be a real frustration to try and translate Ni insight into a bunch of logical steps for people - its always a post facto logic- the idea appears in my mind mostly formed. When I examine it there is always a logic too it but I am not consciously aware of it at the beginning.

Wow… that description of a film between you and reality… I’ve never been able to articulate the feeling. I’ve thought it was dissociation but it didn’t feel unhealthy. Who knows
And the part about needing to process ideas at length before I can express them verbally
And the part about random insights and not knowing how you know, what you know!
    Yep - I’m Ni dom

Wow! The words being on the tip of your tongue... is oh-so-relatable-and-true... Like there are so many times I know the meaning and true gist of concept...but if someone asks me the definition, I have to really think about it what to say. I really have to practice it. It's like I know it but can't explain how.... And the "I just know this but don't know how"... Happens with me all the time and infact, I did get INTJ and INFJ on tests so many times... But the difference between T and F fluctuates often... I feel like at work place I am INTJ and at home I am an INFJ...I have no idea but I just thought it's like this....

Avoiding reference to the past is so true of INTJs I find. Being future focused (Ni) , I fixate on my next goal to a fault so come off aloof, withdrawn, blunt, avoidant and dismissive connecting to others.

Thank you, the last sign was so true to me. I always feel like im not actually focus on anything and just staring nowhere but i still listen to everyone talking around me. Thank you again, you help me a lot with your videos.

Great description. Thank you. I don't conceptualize it this way, but using Ni can feel like I am channeling spirits. Knowledge comes to me from who knows where, it seems. I don't even remember what I remember, quite often, until I speak, and then things come out of my mouth that I don't recognize. (INFJ)
