This was a fun first listen! What should I check out next by them? I want to hear the "Prog" side of them. If you would like to make a request or just send a one time donation, here's how! A donation of any amount will get your name added to the thank you supporter video that plays at the end of every video. Your support is uh, most appreciated and very needed right now. We are going through a lot. I love y'all
Try Rudy - that side of the Crime of the Century album. Supertramp seems less prog to me than Yes and Genesis. They’re playful and jazzy snd poppy. Love them.
@@jellyrollnorton They were as good songwriters as Yes and Genesis at the time (not quite as adventurous soloists), but I figure they were more determined to break into the Top 20 charts too - and before "Crime" they had not really gained notice for their albums either....But COTC is a masterclass album, there's not a single filler track; essentially all the songs are beautifully written, arranged and played - and with great soulful vocals by Rick and Roger - and really cool, penetrating lyrics. Some of those songs are real masterpieces. compared to anything out of the seventies - "Rudy" is quite amazing and even more relevant today than it was back then, half a century ago, because there are more abused or loveless kids in today's cities than in those days. And "Asylum" is perhaps the single greatest rock song ever about mental illness and the fluid borderline (or societal opposition) between sanity and insanity: every moment Rick Davies sings in that one is carried by knowledge and inner conviction, it's a bloody shattering song, dramatic and poignant - and beautifully arranged. And yes, the cover picture is an absolute classic! 💙
Great to have you trying Supertramp ! I consider them to play proggy pop music, even though that could be considered as being an oxymoron. Proggiest tracks, for me : - on the same album, School is great, Rudy too, and the title track - on the next album, "Even In The Quietest Moments", Fool's Overture is awesome, with different textures, a lot of intensity and dynamics - the first album, sometimes titled "Surely" or simply "Supertramp", a few tracks really belong to prog, like Try Again, or Maybe I'm A Beggar. The guitar player, Robert Palmer-James, became King Crimson's lyricist during the Wetton era (both were good friends)
This is from their master piece « Crime of the Century ». « Breakfast in America « was more commercially successfyl, but Crime put them on the map’ one of the best prog album of the 70’s. The title song is in my mind their best song ever, but the entire album is superb. School, Hide in your shell and Rudy are all terrific too. « Brother Were You Bound » on the album with the same name is an overlooked beauty: a 15-16 minutes prog song with David Gilmour as special guest!
Great Reactions! This whole album, Crime of the Century,, should be listened to song by song. Its their masterpiece. 3 more great albums followed that one.
Love Supertramp! Another one of those bands whose songs are the “Music of Your Life!” Beginning with the Crime of the Century Album! All of it! The album was on Replay! LOVE Even in the Quietest Moments! Breakfast in America!!
Love Supertramp. Some Great Songs. My own favourites, ‘Take The Long Way Home’. ‘The Logical Song’. ‘Give a Little Bit’. ‘Goodbye Stranger’. ‘Dreamer’. ‘Breakfast In America’. ‘It’s Raining Again’. 🎶❤️🎶
@@L33Reacts Thank you and hope you enjoy. Love your ‘YES’ Saturdays, by the way. And wondering, are you not going to venture into any ‘Pink Floyd’. 🎶❤️🎶
Many of their songs played on the radio all the time. They still do on classic rock stations. Still count as prog because of their sophistication and originality. Unique combination of catchy and deep.
Saw them at Buffalo's Kleinhans Music Hall in 1975, performing their 2nd North American concert. They played the Crime of the Century album in it's entirety. Trust me Lee, this album is a classic!!!!
Supertramp - The Logical Song (Official 4K Video) This is the one you need to watch Because it shows the band but I believe it is the studio version but it looks like they ARE playing it live. Co-founder Roger Hudgson is lead vocals for this one. He is the guitar player but no guitar. He is playing keyboards instead.
Congrats on your anniversary for staying clean! One day at a time. One issue at a time. The love and longing you have for your kids can feel overwhelming, but everything works out in the end when you make the right choices. :)
Bloody Well Right. Glad you did the studio version That opening improv is way better than the one in the live version IMHO. It is Co-founder rick Davies on the key board and lead vocal.
When this song came out it was paired on FM radio with School, which is a great lead-in that you will hear when you listen to this entire album, which is their best album. They got more poppy and popular a few albums later. Even in the Quietest Moments and Crisis! What Crisis? are really good early albums.
Another deep rabbit hole. They get lumped into the prog category, but I’ve always considered them more “prog-adjacent.” Yes, this was on the radio all the time. We had it good. 😊 I will recommend “Even In The Quietest Moments” or “Sister Moonshine” as a next listen.
Keep in mind that the Beatles were so successful they were able to try new styles and instruments. As they kept experimenting other artists did too. By the early 70s FM radio came around and some of those stations were open to new music. Bands like Supertramp were able to get airplay back then. Once established people were interested in them.
Supertramp incorporated a lot of Prog elements to their music, but I never considered them a flat out Prog Rock band ...however, they did create an epic Prog masterpiece, when they recorded the great "Fool's Overture," which will take you on a true musical journey. You should definitely react to Fool's Overture, L33. ❤✌
Hey Bob! Thanks for watching 😁 I'll definitely add that one to the list. This was a good first taste but I prefer the prog kinda sound! This was still prog but with a pop twinge it seems. 👍
This song was my introduction to Supertramp. Sitting on a picnic table outside an A&W Root Beer and Burgers drive-in, in a tiny northern Minnesota town called Longville. There was a jukebox inside, and it was connected to really crummy speakers on the outside of the building. First time it came on the random rotation, a handful of us in the summer between sophomore and junior years began bellowing along with the chorus in really bad British accents. Must've really annoyed the other people around us, now that I think about it. 😇
the album 'Crime of the centuary ' is the one to listen too..which this iis off..and as a lifelong prog fan...(im 68) this as never prog..iis probaly closet to jazz..first sa supertramp on 'the old grey whistle test' a uk lve music show..saw them lve at reading festival 1975..'School' is a great track off thiis lp
I suggest "Rudy", "Fool's Overture", "Crime Of The Century" and "Even In The Quietest Moments" as good examples of their prog side. Their first 2 albums are the proggiest. They didn't take off until "Crime Of The Century" spawned several hit singles, i.e. "Bloody Well Right", "School" and "Dreamer". Try to catch live versions from the 1979 Paris show for a snapshot of them at their peak. 3 keyboards all at once, clarinet, sax, harmonies, it just doesn't get any better...
nThe whole album "Crime of the Century" is worth listening imo esp. "School", "Rudy" and the title track. But no weak song on it and much deeper than their later poppy stuff what was more successfull but more shallow, too.
Was never really a fan but worth watching. As always, thanks a lot ❤ I loved it. You working in a kitchen? I did on and off for 14 years. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ❤
The album Crime of the Century (that BloodyWell Right comes from originally) is one of my favourites. ButI've always thought it was a stretch to call Supertramp 'prog'. Can't see it myself.
I know albums are not your first choice, but this song came off Super Tramp’s first album Crime of the Century. It is definitely worth a listen. Thanks for your reactions.
Actually Crime of the Century, 1974, was Supertramp’s fourth album. The three preceding albums were…. 1970 Supertramp 1971 Indelibly Stamped 1972 Extremes
For a proggier ST album that won't be on everyone's radar, check out Brother Where You Bound?, especially the title track (with guitar solos by David Gilmour) and "Cannonball," which is a real banger.
Hello L33, I'm a big fan of Supertramp and since you've gotten so many great suggestions for more of their songs. I'd like to suggest another band to give a listen, if interested. "Steppenwolf - The Pusher (Live IN Louisville)" (by the channel: PeutEtreDejaVu) --Steppenwolf is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA. in 1967 by lead singer John Kay, (keyboardist) Goldy McJohn, Jerry Edmonton, all three played together in a previous band called "The Sparrows" (guitarist) Michael Monarch, and (bassist) Rushton Moreve were recruited by running an advertisement in a musical instrument store. Steppenwolf sold 25 million records worldwide, released 7 Gold albums and 1 Platinum album, and 13 Billboard Hot100 singles, of which 7 were Top 40 hits... in otherwards this band has lots of bangers to explore. lol🎶 I enjoyed your reaction thanks for sharing
This is as prog as it gets with Supertramp. Lots of great songs but orientated to the pop side while incorporating great instrumentation and interesting arrangements. Good vocals throughout. Lots of babies!!
I think I agree with you about a lot of today's music with that auto tune or whatever & some of the rap or whatever. But after growing up with a mother that told me that these rock songs are not music, I would not in good conscience say that about anybody else's music. But between you and me.....
OK, man. So, now you have to get hold of the album and start from the beginning. The efforts track goes into the is one with only a single beat between the two. They say that it's not a concept album but it's hard to imagine those songs in any other order.
When I was studying in the university, I listened a lot to Supertramp. It's a good band, the sax is very nice. But I can't stand them in large quantities, they are kind of boring to me. Insufficiently crazy 😂

that whole album (Crime Of The Century)! Every song a gem, really
Sonically one of the best sounding prog albums of all time. Listen to 'School'.... blows your mind !! 😍
Hide in Your Shell and Asylum are excellent tracks. The Crime of the Century album is a must have in any collection.
Supertramp were the most talented musicians to walk the face of the earth
Great Reactions! This whole album, Crime of the Century,, should be listened to song by song. Its their masterpiece. 3 more great albums followed that one.
I'm not even a big Supertramp fan, but Crime of the Century is true perfection, not one "just okay" track in the damn thing.
This is why this song is on their greatest hits album-it's original, it's rockin', it's plain fun!
Love Supertramp! Another one of those bands whose songs are the “Music of Your Life!” Beginning with the Crime of the Century Album! All of it!

LOVE Even in the Quietest Moments!
Breakfast in America!!
Im in a major supertramp mood these days.

L33 "Rudy" in addition to being a great masterpiece, it is Supertramp's most prog music IMO. Highly recommended as the entire album "Cryme of..."
Rudy is my favorite of theirs and it is very prog, now that you mention it. :-) And it moves so well.
Great point about how the appreciation for music (and art!) is being lost. Glad we have people like you carrying the flag. Keep up the good work.
You have got to listen to Crime of the Century and School! Those songs are amazing!!
one of my favorite bands. This band you need to dive into their Rabbit Hole...interior of their album!!!! FIRE!!! Really worth it!!!

Roger Hodgson later co-wrote the song "Walls" on Yes' album Talk.
Great drivin tune.
“Rudy” and “The Crime of the Century” are also worthy tracks.
I will be checking out the crime of the century next for sure. Everyone has mentioned it so far:)
I’d recommend the live version from Paris 1979 (that whole concert is amazing) The vid is on YT.
“Bloody Well Right” was one of their first tracks that made the US charts (1974).
It sounds like a great radio hit and I mean that in a good way. Very accessible and groovy. I bet people really enjoyed it back then (and now) 😀
